Here are some of the highlights from some of the meets from the past weekend involving meets in Illinois and meets involving Illinois teams.

Thank you to Roland Hopkins from IL Speed Ratings (ilxcspeedratings.com) for his feedback from the Minooka Flight Invitational.

Coverage from the Richard Spring Invitational can be found here.

Minooka Flight Invitational

Maine South’s Tommy Brady displayed why he is one of the top runners in the state winning the Boys Championship Flight over a good field Saturday morning at Channahon Park. Brady ran 14:54 to win by six seconds ahead of Jack Roberts of Downers Grove South. The two runners set the pace early going through the first mile in 4:58 with Bolingbrook’s Tyler Cushing and Lincoln-Way Central’s Jared Kries close behind. Brady made his first move right after that with only Roberts going with him. Brady continued to push the pace in the final mile slowly extending the lead on Roberts. Cushing was eight seconds behind Roberts in third (15:08) with Kries another nine seconds back in fourth (15:17).

Brady’s championship flight win secured the win for Maine South as the Hawks and Downers Grove North were tied for the lead going into the final flight race of the day. #14 Maine South scored 20 points just a point ahead of #8 Downers Grove North. #15 Minooka finished third (27 points) behind flight wins from Jordan Freese (4th flight), Mark Dames (5th flight), and Seth Joder (6th flight).

In a battle of two of the race winners from last week’s races at Peoria, it was the freshman that had the advantage. Batavia’s Katrina Schlenker pulled away from Brooke Stromsland of Lakes Community to pick up the win in a loaded championship flight. There was no craziness in the pace early in the race as Schlenker led a pack that included Stromsland, Kate Dickman of Lyons Township, Julianna Stogsdill of Plainfield North, Madison Diercks of Belvidere North, Helena Kleronomos of Yorkville, and Vivian Van Eck of Minooka. Schlenker continued to push the pace during the second mile and pulled away in the final third of the race.

Schlenker’s winning time of 17:37 was seven seconds faster than second-place Stromsland (17:44). Stogsdill had a great race finishing third (17:48) as Van Eck (17:54) held off Kleronomos (17:57) for fourth with Dickman at 18:00 in sixth.

#3 Yorkville bounced back with a good performance in this meet scoring 12 points for the team title winning five of the seven flights. The Lady Foxes received wins from Kailey Fox in Flight 2 running 17:49 just ahead of Batavia’s Mia Gianfrancesco by eight seconds. Yorkville’s Olivia Borowiak won Flight 3, Emily Eberhart won Flight 4, Sara Klemm won Flight 5, and Hailey Simmons was victorious in Flight 6.
