Illinois High School Track and Field Weekend Highlights - February 25, 2024

Personal and seasonal bests rule the meets on the last weekend in February

By Michael Newman

Good meets involving top athletes challenging each other results in state leading marks and more importantly personal bests in meets throughout Illinois over the past weekend. The first big meet this indoor season of major significance was the NCC Boys Invitational on February 15. The kickoff for the indoor season came on Friday and Saturday were run on 200 Meter tracks.

The momentum of this past weekend will just continue from weekend to weekend until we get to the IHSA State Meet this coming May.

Here are highlights of some of the meets that took place throughout Illinois this past weekend with meets completed by February 24.

Batavia Bulldog Girls Invitational – This meet failed to disappoint especially in the distance events where the top four teams from last fall’s 3A State Cross Country meet were in attendance. It was the third race of the morning that got everyone’s attention.

Mia Sirios of Barrington was close to going under 5-minutes for the 1600 Meter Run the week before at York. This would be the first 3200/2-mile race since she ran one at the end of January at Gately Park. Sirios broke away from the rest of the field from the start. She had a 10 second lead at 1200-meters in front of Prospect’s Veronica Znajda and Lily Ginsberg along with Holly Johnston of Downers Grone South. Sirios continued to push the pace at that point moving away from the field passing 1600-meters in 5:19. 3. Znajda and Ginsberg were at 5:34 15 seconds back. That gap continued to grow as Sirios put the pressure on the pace. The winning time for the freshman was the fastest time in the state in 10:30.29 (US #8). What was even more impressive is that she lapped this talent laden field including the two Prospect runners.

The top six runners in this race finished under 11:30. Znajda ran 11:10.06 (IL #5) and Ginsberg (11:10.35, IL #6) finished second and third. Johnson ran 11:18.63 (IL #9) to finish fourth. McKenzie Willard of Downers Grove North finished fifth (11:21.91, IL #12) ahead of teammate Sarah Paul (11:24.03, IL #13).

Scout Storms has made it a habit early in this season to make the finishes In Barrington’s relays with a touch of suspense. Storms was 5 seconds behind Prospect entering the final lap of the 4x800m Relay. In a blink of an eye, Storms caught Prospect’s Amalia Scorza in the final 50-meters in the race. Barrington was timed in 10:01.38 (IL #4) for the win. Prospect ran 10:02.58 (IL #5) to finish second without their full lineup. They did have Meg Peterson run the second leg with a 2:19.9 leg giving the Knights the lead half way through the race.

Storms did double back in the 800 Meter Run but did not have an answer to Downers Grove North’s Ava Gilley who took the lead at the start of the race. Zimmer ran 2:17.57 (IL #4) to capture the win ahead of Katherine Klimek of York (2:20.22, IL #13) and Storms (2:21.31, IL #15). Kayleigh Burns of Barrington played it smart in her race in the 1600 Meter Run. The senior hung back for the first half of the race and then caught Maggie Owens of York and Sophia Baumert of Streamwood. Burns pulled away in the final lap to run 5:13.70 for the win with Baumert (5:19.42) and Owens (5:21.16) finishing second and third.

Isabelle Taylor of Batavia was a double winner in the sprints. Taylor ran 7.43 to win the 55 Meter Dash ahead of the Downers Grove North duo of Allison Leach (7.52) and Dakota Washington (7.54). Taylor came back to run 25.97 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Batavia, with Taylor leading off, ran 1:44.86 (IL #2) to dominate with a win the 4x200m Relay ahead of Prospect (1:46.51) and Downers Grove North (1:47.65, IL #10). Downers Grove North, led off with a sub-60 second opening leg from Ava Gilley, ran 4:09.74 (IL #5) to win the 4x400m Relay with Prospect running 4:13.72 for second.

Meg Peterson, who ran the second leg for Prospect’s team in the 4x800m Relay, needed to come from behind to catch teammate Veronica Znajda to in the final five meters to win the 400 Meter Dash. Peterson ran 1:00.10 (IL #12) just ahead of Znajda (1:00.54). Lauren Broome of Oswego took the lead on the second hurdle on her way to running 8.77 (IL #3) to win the 55 Meter Hurdles. Charlotte Rossi of Prospect ran 9.14 (IL #11) to finish second.

In field events, Barrington swept the first two places in the Shot Put. Sofiabella Amirante had a 39-1.75 best (IL #7) for the win with teammate Morgan Flaska finishing second (33-9.25). Barrington’s Yane Jansen Van Rensburg cleared 10-0 to win the Pole Vault. Freshman Madeline Marling of Prospect cleared 4-10 to win the High Jump.
