The newest signings of Swiss running brand On and members of the Colorado-based On Athletics Club team Oliver Hoare and Joe Klecker join DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss being the foundation of a new team coached by Dathan Ritzenhein and being able to show off their fitness in the 1,500 meters Aug. 15 at the Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tenn. During an Aug. 3 mile time trial at 5,095 feet elevation at Niwot High, Hoare ran 3:56.8 and Klecker clocked 3:58.4, the fastest two reported times on Colorado soil, which would convert to 3:51.16 and 3:52.72 at sea level. Hoare talks about acclimating to training at elevation for the first time in his career and how beneficial it has been to have a pair of altitude veterans in Klecker and Ritzenhein to be able to assist him in that transition. Klecker shares the benefits of having a strong middle-distance athlete like Hoare, the 2018 NCAA Division 1 1,500-meter champion, in the group. They express their gratitude in being able to transition to a coach like Ritzenhein, after having veteran mentors like Mark Wetmore at Colorado and Mick Byrne at Wisconsin. They both examine the unique opportunities that On has presented them in having a voice in developing training shoes and racing spikes, as well as the marketing and branding platform, not just in the United States, but globally, with the assistance of Steve DeKoker and Andrew Wheating. Hoare speaks about his aspirations to represent Australia in the Olympics and World Championships in the 1,500, with Klecker focusing on the 5,000 on the track as his best opportunity to make a U.S. roster. They both look ahead to the 2021 World Cross Country Championships, which are scheduled to be held in New South Wales, although Athletics Australia and the Local Organizing Committee have recommended a possible delay as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic. They talk about their passion for competing in cross country, and especially for Hoare, what it would mean to represent On and Australia at the global final competing on home soil if the racing calendar lined up well next year.
