Illinois Track & Field Athletes of the Year – 1A Boys Field EventsPublished by

Connor Artman of Illini West gets our nod in this category. The junior went undefeated in the Long Jump during the season. He was second after the prelims at state in the event. He jumped a personal best of 23-5 in the finals to overtake IC Catholic Prep’s Jordan Rowell to win the state championship. Mason Wright of Forreston was one of the athletes considered in this category. The senior went undefeated in the Triple Jump this season. After finishing 19th in 2016 failing to qualify for the state finals, Wright came back strong to achieve a four-foot personal best in jumping 47-0 in the state finals. Also considered was Cameron Witts of Williamsville. He stepped into the spotlight indoors finishing second in the Pole Vault at the Illinois Top Times Championships clearing a 14-3 personal best. The sophomore went undefeated during the outdoor season including winning the state championship clearing 14-9 and defeating defending champion Curtis Gordon of Vandalia in the process.
