1A Girls Individuals to Watch

Emma Argo, Eureka; Lydia Roller, Staunton; Amelia McLain, Benton; Fran Hendrickson, St. Thomas More; Julia Wolke, Christian Liberty Academy; Karlie Hey, Sterling Newman; Katelyn Robbins, Liberty; Caroline Jachino, Pleasant Plains; Payne Turney, Clinton; Ailey Mitchell, Shelbyville; Cassidy Bagby, St. Joseph-Ogden; Jordan Harmon, Tolono Unity; Carly Manchester, IC Catholic Prep.

Overview – Forget the fact that there were 22 All-State runners returning in this classification. Many races have been run to determine who will be in the front.

The first race on Saturday could come down to Emma Argo, the defending state champion, being challenged by Lydia Roller. Argo has gone undefeated this fall and will be looking for her ninth straight race win. Roller is coming on strong down the stretch. The sophomore ran 17:23 to win last week at Decatur St. Teresa. The two could push each other to under 17:15 to win this race.

1A Girls Teams to Watch

It comes down to Tolono Unity and Eureka for the state team title. Eureka has the power in the front led by Emma Argo and Alexi Fago. Unity goes after their third state title in four years but will need tight pack running behind Jordan Harmon and Caroline Bachert.

A detailed look at each qualifying teams are listed below.

Decatur St. Teresa Sectional Champions

Overview – The defending champions have been in this position before and typically run their best race of the season on this course. This year should be no exception. Jordan Harmon has stepped up in the last three races as the team’s top runner along with Caroline Bachert. Expect both of these runners to finish in the top 10 in this race.

The key for the Rockets is their pack behind their top two runners. There are five runners that could be top five scorers for this team including Taylor Joop and Evelyn Atkins. The pack on the third through five runners had a split of 13 seconds in their regional race and only four seconds in the sectional race. Their third through fifth runners need to stay within 30 seconds of Harmon and Bachert for this team to repeat as state champions.

Elmwood Sectional Champions

Overview – It should be a close battle for the state team champion on this level. The Hornets are running with a lot of momentum heading into this meet. Even though all eyes will be on defending champion Tolono Unity in this race, it could be Eureka that has the slight edge.

Emma Argo is the defending 1A individual champion and will be gunning for back to back state titles. Teammate Alexi Fogo, who finished third last week has a good chance to finish in the top 10. Tessa Wiegand got within 43 seconds of Fogo last week. Being within 35 seconds of Fogo would be a good thing for the Hornets. The team ran a season best 117 second split off Argo last Saturday. The split on the pack was 80 seconds. Getting the second and fifth runners to under 65 seconds could secure a state championship for this team.

2nd – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – A team on the rise that could take home some hardware Saturday from Detweiller Park. Caroline Jachino is the leader of this team and will be among the top 10 individuals in this race. Then comes the pack that will need to have their best race of the year to complement Jachino. Bernadette and Brigid Tournoux have been within 50 seconds of Jachino in races at the end of the season.

One of the Tournoux sisters needs to be within 40 seconds of Jachino on Saturday. In the Patriot Invitational three weeks ago and their sectional last weekend, their split on their top five was 101 seconds. The split from their second through fifth runners last Saturday was 46 seconds. For the Cardinals to be among the top three teams, they will need an 80 second split on their top five as well as a 40 second split on their pack. That kind of race puts them in the trophy hunt.

3rd – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – The Spartans are a team that would not be a surprise if they finish in the top five with a chance at a trophy. Savannah Beavers and Payton Wille have been consistent top runners for the team this fall and could be among the top 25 runners on Saturday. Wille has been on an average 24 seconds of Beavers the past two meets. That gap will need to be cut down to 15 seconds Saturday.

Olympia ran an 82 second split on their scorers last week. That needs to come down to under 72 seconds for this team to have a chance to finish in the top five.

2nd – Decatur St. Teresa Sectional

Overview – It will not surprise me for the Lady Spartans to be in the hunt for a top three trophy on Saturday like they have been the past five years. It is so close between the top teams that St. Joseph-Ogden could be on the outside looking in when they give out the trophies.

Cassidy Bagby will again be the top runner for this team and should find her way among the top 15 runners in this race. SJO’s pack needs to be closer to their front runner led by Hannah Rajlich and Jillian Plotner. Their pack race last week was not their best with 52 seconds separating their second through fifth runners. It will need to be closer on Saturday with Rajlich running within 25 seconds of Bagby. A group split of 38 seconds with a 68 to 70 second split on their top five puts them in the trophy mix. This team has a tradition of running great on State Saturday. I don’t see that tradition ending in this race.

4th – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – The Titans received a boost in their sectional race with the return of their top runner Kate Atkins who missed almost a month with an injury. The addition to the lineup gives this team a chance to finish in the top five. The split on the top three runners of Atkins, Ruby Slightom. and Sophia Allen was only 26 seconds last week. Atkins will be closer to the front in this race with top 25 hopes. The pack staying close would be a bonus for the team.

The split on their top five runners has come down the past two weeks with 135 seconds separating the group. Getting a runner in the top 25 with the split dipping under 110 seconds would be good news on Saturday for this team.

Oregon Sectional Champion

Overview – This team has been one of the top five ranked 1A teams throughout the regular season. In this race where the teams are so closely matched, the Rockets could be among the top three teams. At the same time, Rock Falls could finish between fifth and tenth.

Bailee Fortney has been the top runner for the team this season and should be among the top 15 runners in this race. In their last four races, the gap between Fortney and second runner Alex Gomez has stretched out to over 50 seconds. Gomez will need to be within 39 seconds of Fortney for this team to be in the trophy hunt. Their split on the pack led by Gomez will need to stay under 35 seconds for this team to be in contention for a top finish.

5th – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – A team that could be a surprise in the top ten after finishing fifth in a tough Elmwood Sectional race. Caroline Gwaltney has been the team’s top runner throughout the season and should be in reach of a top 20 finish in this race. The pack behind Gwaltney was impressive last Saturday as their second through fourth runners were separated by only 10 seconds. Keeping their five-runner split under two minutes will be a key to watch on Saturday. It was 133 seconds in last week’s race.

2nd – Oregon Sectional

Overview – The Indians were within a point of Rock Falls three weeks ago at Big Northern Conference Meet. That gap was 14 points as Winnebago finished second in the sectional meet. This team is capable of being among the top five teams in this meet. Natalia Martino is a returning all-state runner and could be among the top 10 runners in this race after finishing second last weekend. Teammate Katie Erb is having a great senior season and could be in the top 25 by the time the race is over.

The gap between Erb and Renee Rittmeyer was 40 seconds last week. The split between three through five in that race was 68 seconds. Both splits need to come down for this team to be reach of a top five finish.

Benton Sectional Champion

Overview - The champs from the southernmost 1A sectional in the state have a good shot of finishing among the top 10 team’s in the state race. Gabrielle Alongi is quietly having a good season and could be among the top 25 in this race. Their second through fourth runner pack has improved led by Olivia Phillips. It was only 30 seconds on the Benton course last week. The team ran a season best of 117 seconds for their split on the top five in the sectional race. Lowering that time could get this team among the top 10 in Peoria.

Lisle Sectional Champion

Overview – Another team that you will find fighting for a top 10 finish in this meet. The sectional champions had a 77 second split on their top five in their win. Jillian Milton and Molly Raymond have traded off the top spot the last four meets. Both should be among the top 40 finishers in this race. Keeping Josie Mendell with 10 seconds of that top group with a team split under 60 seconds could move this team into the top 10.

2nd – Lisle Sectional

Overview – A team that surprised some early on moving into the top ten in the rankings. The Knights proved they belonged there after finishing seventh in the 1A/2A race almost a month ago. Freshmen Kennedy Calcagno and Carly Manchester have given this team a boost and should be among the top 25 individuals on Saturday. Frankie Chaidez was close to 100 seconds behind Manchester last week. She has been within 45 seconds at times during the year. Chaidez within 30 to 35 seconds of the front two with a team split under 100 seconds could get this team into the top 10.

Any improvements on that split increases the chances of McNamara finishing in the top 20.
