ILSPEEDRATINGS.COM 1A BOYS STATE MEET PROJECTIONS

1A Boys Individuals to Watch

Garrett Dixon, Monticello; Negus Bogard, Robinson; Christopher Collet, Seneca; Jackson Stewart, St. Teresa; Isiah Ditta, Clifton Central; Cameron Woodard, Tolono Unity; Drew Rogers, Herscher; Cree Stumpf, Roxana; Miles Sheppard, Hamilton/Warsaw; Justin Mumford, Trenton-Wesclin; Cort Ross, Casey-Westfield; Layton Hall, Arthur-Lovington; Aryan Lalwani, Urbana University; Jeremy Snejberg, Clifton Central; Leland Sumer, Tremont

Overview Garrett Dixon has been the top 1A runner all season going undefeated against 1A runners. I do not see that changing on Saturday. A time under 14:38 could happen if the conditions are right.

Dixon is not a total lock in this race. Negus Bogard was 10 seconds behind Dixon at Decatur and could close the gap in this race. Christopher Collet was even with Dixon before Collet fell just before 2-miles at Amboy. Dixon went on to win that race.

It will be a toss-up after those three runners. I would keep an eye on Justin Mumford. The sophomore missed most of the season due to an injury. He has run just two races: regionals and sectionals. He finished second behind Cree Stumpf last week at Benton. The two could be surprises in the top five.

1A Teams to Watch

Clifton Central has been the top team in 1A for the majority of the season having defeated Monticello twice along the way. Monticello, who was the top ranked team at the beginning of the year is coming on strong and will be with or ahead Clifton Central.

Don’t forget about defending 1A Boys champion Elmwood-Brimfield in this race. The Trojans are peaking at the right moment with solid pack running. The possibility of back to back state titles for this team.

A detailed look at each qualifying teams are listed below

Decatur St. Teresa Sectional Champion

Overview – In a close team race like the one that is expected in this classification on Saturday, the Sages will need to have their best race of the year. It’s a good bet that will happen. Monticello has showed improvement during the season. Garrett Dixon is the individual favorite in this race assuring single digit points for his team up front.

It has been the pack behind Dixon that has improved. That group, led Luke Sokolowski, ran a 30 second split in their sectional race. The key will be where that splits begins. Sokolowski finishing in the top 25 would be a big help for Monticello. Morgan Dixon was within 20 seconds of Sokolowski last week. Watch for that gap to narrow on Saturday. The Sages ran their best top five split of the season last week. They need to show another improvement in order to win that state championship trophy.

Lisle Sectional Champion

Overview – The Comets have defeated Monticello twice in meets during the season. Will the third time be a charm meaning a state championship trophy? Isiah Ditta and Jeremy Snejberg give Central a strong duo up front that could finish in the top 15.

What to watch for is the team’s next three runners. Trevor Swanson was only 23 seconds behind Ditta the last time they raced Monticello at Amboy in October. In that race, he did finish ahead of Monticello’s second runner Luke Sokolowski. They will need that kind of race from Swanson to put the Comets in position to win. The team only had a 61 second split on their scorers in last weeks race, their best of the season. It could become a match race with Monticello and Elmwood having three runners in before Monticello’s second and four runners in before Elmwood’s pack starts. Achieving those two things could have Clifton Central’s hand on the state championship trophy.

Elmwood Sectional Champion

Overview – There are two things that you can expected this time of the year. The first are the leaves changing colors at Detweiller Park. The second is Elmwood peaking for their best race at the state meet.

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year according to some doubters. They proved many wrong and will be in the hunt for a state championship. With Luke Hoffmann finishing seventh in last week’s sectional race, the Trojans still had a 26 second split on their top five runners. Jacob Brown was within four seconds of his teammate with Griff Inskeep another 12 seconds back. That display shows how dangerous this could be on Saturday morning. The possibility of Hoffmann and Brown in the top 25 is there. If that happens, this team could be tough to beat.

2nd – Decatur St. Teresa Sectional

Overview – There is a slight gap between the first three teams. Then comes the Maroons who ran a good race last week at Decatur. Negus Bogard will be among the top runners in this race finishing in the top five. Maverick Wright, their second runner, has been within an average of 45 seconds of Bogard. Wright being within 35 seconds of his teammate would make things easier for this team.

Robinson ran an 87 second season’s best top five split last week. They will need one of those races again on Saturday to get into the top three. The split off second runner Wright was 40 seconds. If that split gets cut to 30 seconds, this team is in the mix for a state trophy.

2nd – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – The Spartans are a pack team similar to what Elmwood does. In their sectional matchup, Elmwood won all five scoring battles. Olympia can’t let that happened if they have visions of a top three finish on Saturday.

This team has been running top five splits in the 40’s most of the season. That split was only 41 seconds in their sectional race. Jon Neville and Logan Wheeler have led the team all year and could both finish in the top 25. In this meet, they will need to win those Elmwood matchups to get into the top three teams. That will mean not letting Elmwood put five runners in before Olympia’s third runner. Neville and Wheeler ahead of Elmwood’s pack and their third runner ahead of Elmwood’s fifth runner with the next two runners in within eight seconds puts this team in contention for a trophy.

2nd – Lisle Sectional

Overview – Their second-place finish in the Lisle Sectional is why I have this team in the hunt for a top five finish. Forget that the sectional is traditionally weak. The fact that the Knights finished only 21 points behind Clifton Central is worthy of getting your attention.

Brian Walsh and Aidan Dunaway were within three seconds of each other last week and will need to be that close again on Saturday. Northridge Prep is peaking at the right time. Their split has lowered to 17 seconds on three runners and 50 seconds on their top five heading into state. Walsh and Dunaway could be among the top 25 on Saturday. That happening along with a split under 50 seconds makes this squad a team to watch for in this race.

3rd – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – Another team that I would keep a close eye on. The Titans have put themselves in position to finish in the top five in Saturday’s race.

Noah Smith has been the team’s top runner and could be among the top 15 in this race. Bo Halvorsen will need to stay within 20 seconds with the pack keeping within 25 seconds of Halvorsen. The sectional race gave them a 47 second split on that group. It was 16 seconds in their regional race. Smith earning all-state honors along with a tight pack behind him puts this team within reach of the top five teams.

4th – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – The Hornets were within four points of El Paso-Gridley in last week’s sectional race. Eureka could surpass them in Saturday’s race. Jack Cook and Kyle Johnson were within a second of each other in last week’s race. Both could be in position to finish in the top 25 at state. The team had a 33 second split on their third through fifth runners last week. That split dropping to 25 seconds on that group with a team split under 58 seconds keeps this team in the top 10.

Benton Sectional Champion

Overview – I would not be surprised to see Freeburg among the top five teams in 1A by the time the results are posted. The Midgets appear to be healthy and peaking at the right time. In their sectional win, their top five runners were led by Corbin Schwable and were within 38 seconds of each other. Schwable finished fourth at Benton and could be in the top 25 on Saturday. That split was their best of the season. It could go lower in Peoria. The pack behind Schwable led by Carson Smith will need to be within 10 seconds of their front man and 20 seconds of each other to cause some placing damage in this race.

3rd – Decatur St. Teresa Sectional

Overview – The Illineks could finish near tenth or closer to the top five with a top race in Peoria. Aryan Lalwani has been near the front pack of races all season and could find his way into the top ten. The pack closing their gap behind their top runner will be something to watch for. It was 86 seconds on five runners last week, 66 seconds off second-runner Henry Kraatz. Closing both of those splits down improves a higher finish for U-High.

5th – Elmwood Sectional

Overview – The Warriors started off the season slow but their late season surge got them to Peoria with a fifth-place sectional finish. Noah McIntyre finished fourth last week at Elmwood and could be among the top 15 in the state race. Their top five split dropped to 82 seconds last Saturday. Lower that split under 60 seconds with their pack led by Ryan Nordsiek 40 seconds behind McIntyre puts this team into the top 10.

Overview – In their second year in existence as a high school cross-country program, the Griffins stepped up and into the state meet with a second-place finish last week. Tyler Guthrie and Zach Brasel lead this team with hopes of finishing 30th or better on Saturday. Father Mac keeps getting better as their split was at a best of 64 seconds at Benton. Don’t be surprised if this team finishes in the top 10 at Detweiller Park.

3rd – Lisle Sectional

Overview – U-High will look for their best ever finish in this meet after their third-place sectional finish. The Maroons had a 17 second split on their top three even though their usual top runner Abraham Zelchenko was the team’s third runner. Nick Edwards-Levin was the team’s top runner in the sectional race. If U-High can keep their top three close and their five-runner split under 64 seconds, this team could be near the top 10.

OverviewGavin Conway and AJ Stearns are the top runners for the Warriors that have team hopes of finishing in the top 15. The team has been running with a split in the 50’s for the past three meets. Lowering that under 50 seconds in this race could be something to keep an eye on.

Kort McClellan has qualified for state as an individual all three years if his high school career. The senior could finish in the top 25 in this race. Cumberland ran a 75 second split on their scorers in their sectional qualifier. A split under last week’s time could put this team in the top 15.

Overview – Marshall ran their best race of the season to put them in Peoria for the state meet. The team only had a 29 second split on their top five runners with Ben Ross and Dylan Stillwell leading them. Their first runner in, perhaps Ross, would need to finish 60th or better for Marshall to be among the top 15 teams if they run that same sectional split.

Overview – Expect the Irish to finish in the top 20 with Christopher Collett leading the way.
