I am usually looking for an athlete that makes a huge jump in her junior or senior season in this category. It did not present itself in this classification. I looked at three athletes.

Katie Castelli of Saint Viator made a jump in her sophomore season. She finished 60th as a freshman in the 2017 2A State Meet. She improved her time by 64 seconds when she ran 17:38 to finish ninth in this past  November’s state meet.

Bloomington’s Kaitlin Skeate did not make it to the state meet her freshman season finishing 33rd at the 2017 Normal U-High Sectional. Her best time as a frosh at Detweiller Park was 19:20. She made it to state this fall finishing 18th and earning all-state honors. She improved on her best time at Detweiller by 75 seconds.

Ella Bittner of Normal University made the biggest jump of the three. Bittner also did not make it to state her freshman season finishing 65th in her sectional race. Her best 3-mile time in 2017 was 20:03. She was one of the team’s top runners this fall culminating with an 11th place all-state performance. Her 3-mile best this fall was 17:36 at the Peoria Invitational. She ran 17:40 at state.

Congratulations to Ella Bittner of University High School in Normal as the 2018 ILXCTF.com 2A Girls XC Most Improved Runner of the Year.
