2018 ILXCTF.com XC Season Awards - 1A Girls XC Runner of the YearPublished by
By Michael Newman
It is hard to win an Illinois Cross Country Individual State title. It is an elite group of runners. It is even harder to repeat that state title. That elite group is even smaller. Eureka’s Emma Argo is part of the two-time state champion group. Argo’s senior year was perfect. She toed the line for nine races this fall. Nine times she crossed the finish line before anyone else could. Her state race was strategized perfectly pulling away at two-miles finishing under 17-minutes at 16:59. 1A could be exciting next fall with the possible addition of Lianna Surtz of Rosary. Her school will compete in 1A for the next two years. This classification also has the next two runners back led by Lydia Roller of Staunton and Amelia McLain of Benton. Roller was tough towards the end of the year winning four straight races before finishing second at state. The same applies to McLain who won six of her seven races before finishing third at state eight seconds behind Roller. For the second year in a row, we congratulate Emma Argo of Eureka High School as the 2018 ILXCTF.com 1A Girls XC Runner of the Year.
