The last full weekend of the Illinois indoor track and field season was either a chance for conference bragging rights or in a chase for a performance to get into the Illinois Top Times Championships beginning on March 22 at Illinois Wesleyan’s Shirk Center.

We were at the two meets this weekend. You can watch videos of the races of those meets on the links below. Here also are highlights from some of last week’s meets.

Huntley Boys Last Chance Meet

The fast track at Huntley High School once again produced some fast performances as athletes looked for qualifying marks for this weekend’s Illinois Top Times Championships. Crete-Monee had some banner times indicating that they will be in the mix for the 3A state title in May.

Jamal Safo led the Crete-Monee charge by running 6.95 (IL #3) to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Ricky Johnson (7.13). The two athletes were also a part of Crete-Monee’s quartet that ran 1:30.31 (IL #2) to win the 800 Meter Relay ahead of their “B” team that finished three seconds back. What was even more impressive was their run in the 1600 Meter Relay. Crete-Monee ran 3:22.61 (IL #2) to win the race by more than12 seconds ahead of Burlington Central (3:34.72). Crete-Monee also got a win from Victor Cameron as the state leader in the 60 Meter Hurdles ran 8.03 to win the event.

Safo led a top four sweep in the Long Jump as the senior jumped 23-0 (IL #3) to win the event ahead of teammates Kavon Jones (22-6.75) and Raejohn Pearson (22-2).

Huntley earlier in the week ran the second fastest 3200 Meter Relay time on their track. They demonstrated their 800-meter prowess as they had four runners at 2:00.5 or faster. The 800 Meter Run was crazy with five runners under two-minutes. Huntley’s Jadon Conroy ran 1:57.87 (IL #4) for the win with teammate Ian Geisler finishing second (1:59.02, IL #10) just barely ahead of Crete-Monee’s Elante Humphrey (1:59.03). Jacobs’ Zach Albrecht (1:59.92) and Jeremy Roe (1:59.95) finished fourth and fifth.

Katelynne Hart’s fantastic triple Friday night was the highlight of the meet (READ THE STORY HERE). Her performances helped Glenbard West win the team title with 128 points. Lyons Township (105 points) finished second.

DuKane Conference Boys Championships @ Batavia

The inaugural Boys championships ended in drama. Batavia had thought that they had won the team championship after they ran 3:27 to easily win the 1600 Meter Relay. With most of the teams having left the indoor track, officials were still deciding on a possible foul in the event. In the opening leg of the race, the first Batavia runner cut in too early coming off the far turn. Batavia was disqualified in the event giving the team title to Wheaton-Warrenville South (105 points). Batavia (99 points) and Wheaton North (94 points) finished second and third.

Wheaton-Warrenville South was led by double event wins by Cedric Rowzee and Sean Maison. Rowzee ran 6.50 (IL #2 tie) to win the 55 Meter Dash ahead of Lake Park’s Adam Wiatr (6.59). Rowzee came back to run 22.44 (IL #5) with Wiatr again finishing second (22.89).

The 3200 Meter Run had five runners under 9:28. Sean Maison pulled away from Geneva’s Ryan Kredell for the win running a personal best of 9:19.22 (IL #4). Kredell finished second (9:22.49, IL #9) ahead of Wheaton North’s Connor Zydek (9:23.56), and St. Charles East’s Micah Wilson (9:25.26) and Bob Liking (9:27.27).

Maison used his kick again to win the 1600 Meter Run. Maison’s time was 4:24.34 finishing ahead of Batavia’s Damian Rodriguez by more than two seconds (4:26.51).

The finish of the 800 Meter Run was just as exciting as Adam Kennedy of Batavia ran 1:57.62 (IL #3) to edge St. Charles East’s Charles Murphy (1:57.98, IL #5) for the win.
