Naperville North goes for their fourth straight state title; Yorkville, Downers Grove South ready for the challenge

One month ago, I pretty much set in my mind in Class 3A Girls that it would be a toss-up between Yorkville and Naperville North for the top spot with Downers Grove South close behind.

When I published the national rankings for XC Zone on ILXCTF.com, I gave Yorkville the edge, with Naperville North following.

All of that changed in the days before I started to write this preview. I received news about Yorkville that could hamper their efforts during the regular season. You can read about the Lady Foxes in the preview below. Downers Grove South looked good at Detweiller at Dark. What would I do with them? Naperville North does not have any seniors in the front but do have a young class of runners that could boost them back to the top for the fourth year in a row in Class 3A.

Just like last year, Naperville North, Downers Grove South, and Yorkville have separated themselves from the rest of the Class 3A Girls pack.

Batavia, Wheaton-Warrenville South, and Lyons Township have improved and move closer to the first three schools.

Then again, state championships are not decided in August in a preview. There is plenty of racing ahead to decide the champion.

Here is a look at the projected top 25 teams for the start of this season in Class 3A. We will also look at some of the other teams to keep an eye on in this classification.

Top 25

1 – Naperville (North)

2018 Finish – 2nd NXN, NXR Midwest Champion, IHSA 3A State Champion

Coach – Dan Iverson

Runners to Watch – Margaret Gamboa JR (19, 17:01), Campbell Petersen JR (25, 17:03), Lucy Westlake SO (28, 17:12), Audrey Mendrys JR (32, 17:17), Marissa Magana FR, Molly Morton JR, Jana Dawson SR, Claire Bruce SR, Kate Donaldson JR, Josie Bond JR, Sophie Golobitsch SO, Alexa Betjeman SR, Sam Falkman FR, Norah Hess FR.

Preview – The Lady Huskies made history for their program winning the Class 3A State Championship for the third year in a row. One month later at the Nike Cross Nationals, Naperville North finished second for the second year in a row.

So, what is next for this dynasty program?

Three runners graduated from the 2018 championship team including multi All-State and All-American runner Alex Morris who has stepped up to the next level at the University of North Carolina. With no seniors projected to be in the top five, who will step into the roll that Judy Pendergast, Sarah Schmitt, and Morris stepped into?

Jana Dawson and Claire Bruce are the leaders based off of their track efforts, but the entire group has been working hard and leading well,” Dan Iverson said, “I think they are all in a position to be better than they have ever been this year.”

What will make the Lady Huskies great this year is how close the four returning runners should be in races. There will be no real #1 runner in this group. At last year’s state meet, the gap between the four was only 16 seconds. Campbell Petersen was only two seconds behind Maggie Gamboa. Lucy Westlake was only nine seconds behind Petersen. Audrey Mendrys was only five seconds behind Westlake. They are interchangeable in that top spot. I can also see the four earning all-state honors in November.

This roster is deep in talent and a number of runners can step into the fifth scoring position. It could be a group of juniors such as Josie Bond, Molly Morton, or Kate Donaldson. Jana Dawson or Claire Bruce be the seniors that step up. It could also be a number of freshman that step in. Marissa Magana just moved to Naperville just before the start of the season. In Middle School, Magana ran 5:18 for 1600-meters. She ran 10:23 to finish second in the 14-year-old 3000 Meter Run at the AAU National Junior Olympics. She might be the runner that gives this team a boost.

“We have had a lot of kids running very well all summer long. It appears as though many of our returners are in truly excellent form, and it is making it tough for me to accurately predict a top seven,” added Iverson. “Our numbers were solid all summer long. We want to be the very best we are capable of becoming.”

2 – Downers Grove (South)

2018 Finish – 3rd NXR MW, 3rd IHSA 3A State

Coach – Doug Plunkett

Runners to Watch – Brenna Cohoon SR (8, 16:40), Erin Reidy SR (39, 17:26), Kennedy Warden SR (43, 17:33), Rebecca Diddia JR (46, 17:35), Alex Sprang SO (99, 18:10), Sophia McNerney SO, Kelsey Castella SO, Gretchen Scheck SO, Renee Kowalski SO, Maya Scheck JR, Ria Patel JR, Sara Hamberg SO.

Preview – The Lady Mustangs achieved one of their goals in 2018 earning the team’s first state trophy finishing third in the Class 3A State Meet. They just missed their second goal finishing third at the NXR Midwest Regional. They were not picked as an at-large team for the Nike Cross Nationals. They would like to rectify that second goal this year. Bettering their finish from 2018 is also a possibility with an experienced group including five runners that ran in last year’s state meet.

“I have two measuring sticks that I use for the summer,” said their coach Doug Plunkett. “We do a 2-mile time trial in the middle of June, and then they run the Detweiller at Dark race at the end of July. I'm big on comparing these results from year to year. When I look at this summer, the results of our 2-mile time trial in June were very consistent with what we ran in June of 2018. The results for this year's D@D race were definitely an improvement over the 2018 race results. That tells me that me that we have taken a bigger step from the beginning to end of this summer than we did last year. So, all the work I've witnessed this summer along with these results make me believe that we have had a pretty good summer. I have no doubt that much of this stems from our senior leadership and their desire to be a better team than we were last year. While I am sure that some of their motivation comes from missing out on NXN last season, I would hope that they are more focused on this season and what we can accomplish this year, rather than worrying about last year.”

If there is one clutch runner in the state, it could be Brenna Cohoon. Now a senior, Cohoon came through with an eighth-place finish at last year’s state meet. She finished fourth last spring in the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run despite a spring of various injuries. She again will be the team’s top runner and could finish among the top five runners in Class 3A. Erin Reidy and Kennedy Warden are the other seniors back that are positioned to have a great 2019. Reidy was all-state last spring for 800-meters. That success should transition over to this fall. Warden could be the most underrated runner in the state on the verge of having a breakout senior season. “I believe that this team has the potential to be the best team in DGS history, added Plunkett. “Starting with our trio of seniors Brenna Cohoon, Erin Reidy, and Kennedy Warden. Those three seniors have already been part of three top-5 finishes at state. They are highly motivated and are well-versed in big meets. Their experience has been invaluable in helping maintain our team culture. All three are capable of top 25 finishes.”

South has a tradition of strong pack running. We could see it from their fourth through seventh runners this fall. Rebecca Diddia was only two seconds behind Warden at last year’s state meet and should again be close in races to the senior. Sophia McInerney finished ahead of Reidy at Detweiller at Dark and could step into the team’s fifth spot.

The Lady Mustangs changed their schedule this year going to the Richard Spring Invitational instead of the First to the Finish Invitational at Peoria in September. They will attend the Desert Twilight Meet in Phoenix, Arizona on 9/27 instead of attending the Griak Invitational on that weekend.

“I have a senior-led group that was itching for some new challenges,” stated Plunkett. “They have been going to the same meets every year, so doing something different hopefully gives them a little more excitement for the unknown. Going to the PND meet and facing some really good teams that we don't normally race is one challenge. And then traveling to the Nike Desert Twilight in Arizona to race some other very good teams that we never otherwise see (Niwot, Desert Vista, Woodlands, etc.) is an even greater challenge. Plus, there is the potential benefit that if we do well at Desert Twilight that it might help improve our NXN resume. It's also a risk attending a meet and a course that we have never run before, but I believe my seniors will handle it well.”

One of the goals for this season they have already accomplished. That is forgetting what happened at the end of last season. It seems that it has fueled them for what they will need to do in 2019. This team has taken small steps to accomplish goals the past three years. Now they are ready to take one huge step for a taste of success.

3 – Yorkville

2018 Finish – 13th NXN, 2nd NXR MW, 2nd IHSA 3A State

Coach – Chris Muth

Runners to Watch – Helena Kleronomos JR (5, 16:35), Kailey Fox SR (10, 16:42), Hailey Simmons JR (30, 17:15), Anna Hunter SO (81, 18:02), Sara Klemm JR (85, 18:04), Sam Moreno SR, Mady Klebenow SR, Alex Stewart FR, Makenna Edwards FR, Ana Penland JR, Margaret Hunter SO, Lucy Anderson FR, Emma Jasutis FR, Katie Mezler FR.

Preview – The scenario has changed in a way for the Lady Foxes and Coach Chris Muth over the past month. When I first started researching this team in June, I could see them in contention to win a state championship and making it back to their third Nike Cross Nationals in a row. However, we are only in August and there is plenty of time to “right the ship”.

There have been three injuries that have set members of this team back in their training. The worst is the injury to all-state runner Kailey Fox who finished 10th in the state last year. “Kailey does have a stress fracture in her hip,” Muth said. “She will be out at least six to eight weeks. She could be back in time for the state series.”

The second was an injury to Hailey Simmons who was the team’s fourth runner at state and second runner at NXN. She is slowly getting back to training according to Muth. The final injury was to Anna Hunter who was thought to have an injury similar to Fox. She was clearance to begin training again about a week ago.

With all of these injuries, Yorkville still has the talent to challenge for a trophy and challenge for an NXN spot. “Our training was very similar to last summer,” continued Muth “It was very consistently attended with good effort and work ethic. Overall, the consistency of our training from the entire team has been outstanding.”

Helena Kleronomos was the top runner for the team at the state meet finishing fifth but sixth runner at NXN. Her track season was not the best, but she has come on strong during the summer waiting for her junior season to begin. Anna Hunter had a breakthrough track season running 11:08 for 3200-meters. “She benefited from having Kailey pace her in some of her races during the track season,” added Muth. “If she can put pacing together along with her confidence in herself as a leader, she can make that next step forward that we will need.”

Sara Klemm has been in their top seven the past two seasons and will be pushing for the top five this fall along with seniors Sam Moreno and Mady Klebenow. With Fox and Simmons slowed with injuries, freshmen Alex Stewart and Makenna Edwards could step into the top five. Stewart was ahead of Hunter for most of the race at Detweiller at Dark.

“We are a deeper team then last year and have some very interesting incoming freshman talent,” Muth stated. “We have to stay healthy to be able to reach our potential.”

Yorkville did make a change in their schedule not going to the Griak Invitational because of homecoming festivities for the school. They will instead run the following weekend at the Nike Valley Twilight Meet in Terre Haute, Indiana.

“Having had those experiences the last two years at NXN has been amazing, but this is a new season and new team, so we are completely focused on one day at a time and each meet that is in front of us,” concluded Muth. “State meet is always our number one focus and my expectation as a coach is that we are preforming at our best when it counts and not putting a finishing place as a success or failure.  Last season we had our best race at the state meet and yes, I would have loved to beat Naperville North, but honestly, I couldn't have been prouder about their performance and to repeat whatever our best is at the state meet, is the only expectations that I focus on.”

It's not the injuries of this team that you should focus on but the development of the squad stepping into the top five. Yorkville does have that tradition and the talent to leave Detweiller Park with another trophy.

4 – Batavia

2018 Finish – 9th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Chad Hillman

Runners to Watch – Katrina Schlenker SO (2, 16:07), Mia Gianfrancesco SR (24, 17:07), Jenna Schifferer JR (106, 18:14), Audrey Pellico SR (126, 18:22), Erin O’Brien SR (157, 18:40), Katie Cole SR (173, 18:53), Anissa Garcia SR, Annie Sellenberg JR, Josie Adams SR, Maya Malay SO, Brooke Nazos SO, Rebekah Cepolski SR, Lily Bednarek FR, Ava Thomas FR, Brooke Sibernagel FR, Meara Sauter FR.

Preview – The Bulldogs could step to the next level in the hierarchy of Class 3A Girls teams this fall. Six of their top seven runners are back from a team that finished ninth in last year’s state meet. That includes two all-state runners back from that group. Katrina Schlenker showed that she was one of the best runners in the state finishing second behind Katelynne Hart in the Class 3A race and then 27th at the Nike Cross Nationals. Mia Gianfrancesco placed 24th at the state meet and could be one of the most improved runners in the state. Last spring was the first time that Gianfrancesco ran on the track team after participating in soccer her first two years of school. “Mia got everything I had hoped for her out of her first track season,” said her coach Chad Hillman. “We have always been curious about Mia’s ceiling and how much more she has in her. She’s always worked very hard and the track season has helped her find out how to push to her limits as a racer. I feel like she gave herself a tremendous opportunity to improve in cross country by how well she approached track and by realizing her full potential. I’m very excited for Mia. She’s a great kid, one of our best leaders, and deserves to have a great senior season.”

Jenna Schifferer had a great summer according to Hillman and could get closer to Gianfrancesco this season. Audrey Pellico and Erin O’Brien give Batavia a strong four / five tandem. “ We have a strong senior class that has a lot of varsity and state meet experience. They are very driven to push themselves to the top tier teams and see what they can do,” added Hillman. Batavia will get the low numbers up front. The Bulldogs will need to move their three to five pack closer to the duo to put them into position for a top three trophy spot.

5 – Wheaton (Warrenville South)

2018 Finish – 6th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Rob Harvey

Runners to Watch – Samantha Poglitsch JR (7, 16:39), Kaitlyn Nenninger SR (41, 17:29), Haley Ansiel SR (109, 18:16), Tess Rucoba SR (127, 18:22), Annie Macabobby SO (128, 18:22), Erica Emmerick SR, Kylie James SO, Miya Diebener SO, Jocelyn Triscik SR, Becca Hauenstein JR.

Preview – The formula and the talent are there for the Lady Tigers to make a run at top three trophy. South finished sixth in 2018 with five of their top seven from that group. “We had an excellent summer,” Coach Rob Harvey said. “We are very fit and ready to go. Many of our underclassmen have accepted the challenge to compete at the varsity level.”

One of the most consistent runner on the state level for the past two seasons has been Samantha Poglitsch. That should not change this fall. The junior has participated in four state finals in her two years of high school running. She has been all-state all four times including finishing fifth last fall. She will again lead this team and should be among the top five in the state meet, The Lady Tigers will miss Laurel Moneysmith who was all-state last fall. Kaitlyn Nenninger could step into her spot. “Kaitlyn Nenninger has made some great strides,” added Harvey. “Her training and confidence have both increased. We look forward to great things from her this season.”

South should have a strong three through fifth runners with Haley Ansiel, Tess Rucoba, and Annie Macabobby who were within six seconds of each other in the state meet. Moving that pack closer to Nenninger would be a bonus for this team. One runner that could be a plus for the Lady Tigers is Becca Hauenstein. As a freshman, Hauenstein ran 18:08 at the state meet as the team’s sixth runner. An injury while playing soccer in the spring of 2018 forced her to miss all of last cross country season. She is slowly coming back and could help this team by the time they get to the state series.

Class 3A is deep in talent as it was a year ago. Wheaton-Warrenville South could be in the top three of out of the top 10. Health will need to be a key for this team that has the talent to accomplish big things. “We have tried very hard over the past five or so years to not have expectations,” Harvey stated. Each season is a clean slate; no two seasons are the alike. We will need every day to improve. Each and every practice and meet will be needed to reach our full potential.”

6 – LaGrange (Lyons Township)

2018 Finish – 4th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Alex Lyons

Runners to Watch – Kate Dickman JR (16, 17:00), Maggie Abbs SR (59, 17:47), Maddie Cranny SR (101, 18:12), Claire Williams JR (105, 18:13), Maggie Vear SR, Maddison Ohm JR, Leah Paliakas SR, Kiley Durkin SR, Ally Sarussi SR, Diane Makovic SR, Olivia McLean JR, Sophia Thomas SO.

Preview – It would be a rebuilding year for most teams that lost three of their top five runners to graduation. That is not the case for Lyons Township heading into the 2019 season. The Lady Lions do have all-state runner Kate Dickman leading them again. They also go 12 to 14 runners deep that could challenge for a top seven spot.

“The girls did a nice job with their summer training,” said their coach Alex Lyons. “They are building fitness, but more importantly, they've done a nice job constructing a healthy team environment.  That's an important part of every summer.” The Lady Lions are consistent with their pack running and will need that this fall behind Dickman. The junior finished 16th in last year’s state meet and will be among the top 10in November.

Maggie Abbs should be a solid second runner for this team. Watch for her to stay 30 to 5 seconds behind Dickman in races this season. Maddy Cranny and Claire Williams should be close to Abbs. A number of runners could step to the fifth through seven spots including Leah Paliakas, Maggie Vear, and Madison Ohm. The challenging for those spots in races and workouts could make this team even tougher.

“Our expectations are the same as they always are.  Coaches and athletes do their best to help the athletes, and the team as a whole, improve and work toward their potential,” added Lyons. “If we keep our focus on those internal metrics, it will be a good year.”

The Lady Lions have finished third and fourth the last two years. This team finishing again in the top five is a possibility.

7 – Oswego

2018 Finish – 8th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Eric Simon

Runners to Watch – Becca Corbett SO (23, 17:06), Ella Hale JR (57, 17:45), Paige Bohnert SO (120, 18:19), Payton Brueck JR (162, 18:43), Becky Jermolowicz SR (174, 18:53), Audra Soderlind FR, Sophia Marasco FR, Jazmin Russell SR, Madison Etheridge SR, Molly Krall SR, Kaylee Symborski SO.

Preview – The Panthers had a great end to their season after finishing eighth last November at Detweiller Park. Expectations are high for this team despite losing one of the program’s all-time top runners Isabelle Christensen who is now at the University of Missouri. Five runners return from last year’s state team.

“Our summer training has gone really well again this summer, but more importantly I am starting to see some team chemistry develop,” Oswego Coach Eric Simon said. “Our annual team trip to Edgewood College in Madison went a long way in helping the girls get to know one another.  This is what I hope to get out of this camp each year even more than the solid training runs.”

Becca Corbett emerged during her freshman season as the team’s #1 runner culminating with an all-state 23rd place finish. Ella Hale ran close to Corbett early in the year and could be within 25 seconds of Corbett this season. A strong freshman duo of Aurda Soderlund and Sophia Marasco have been running with the front group all summer and could boost their top five along with Payton Brueck, Paige Bohnert, and Becky Jermolowicz. Kaylee Symborski and Madi Elderidge have improved over the summer and will challenge for the top five.  This team does have the talent to surprise some by the time they get to the state series.

“The team set a strong goal at our camp while in Madison.  We have been at state 3 of the last 4 years placing 19th, 12th and 8th and suffice to say they want that trend to continue,” Simon added. “My expectation is for our team to work hard and enjoy the journey as we navigate through the season. Ella Hale looks very good and is having her best summer to date. Junior Peyton Brueck is having an outstanding summer and will be a key runner to watch in our success. Sophomore Paige Bohnert has had a very good summer as well after a track season that saw some minor aches and pains slow her down. Overall, I like where we are at and am very excited to get rolling this year.”

It is hard to gauge where this team is at the moment. We will get a better idea at the Richard Spring Invitational in the middle of September. Corbett and Hale will get the team low numbers in the front. A key will be having a 20 to 25 second split from their third through seventh runners which is possible.

“There are physical and emotional ups and downs in a season, but the team understands this and knows we will be at our best in November,” concluded Simon.

8 – Barrington

2018 Finish – 14th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Deb Revolta

Runners to Watch – Molly FitzPatrick JR (26, 17:09), Alyssa Norris SR (35, 17:19), Anne Bergquist JR (64, 17:49), Morgan Magro JR (176, 18:55), Gaby Andrews SO (177, 18:55), Julia Renetsky JR (208, 19:51), Allison Drage SR (transfer from Cary-Grove HS; 143, 18:33), Annika Llerena SO, Rebecca Fritz SR, Kendall Knopp SR.

Preview – The Fillies did not have their best race of the season last November at Detweiller Park. They did finish 14th in the state meet. That is why there is always a next season. Six of their top seven are back from that squad hungry for the season to begin. “Summer training has gone well.  We put in more miles than the last couple of years giving us a bigger base on which to build,” Deb Revolta said. “All the girls have shown improvement.  No one stands out yet but that may change once we start racing.”

Barrington will have a solid four in the front led by Molly FitzPatrick. She just missed an all-state position by one place. She continues to improve so finishing in the top 10 would not surprise me. Alyssa Norris was only 10 seconds behind FitzPatrick at state and came back with a great track season where she ran under five-minutes for 1600-meters. She will be in the hunt for a finish in the top 25. Anne Berquist had a good sophomore season and will give the Fillies a strong #3 runner.

What will give the Fillies a boost is the transfer in of Allison Drage from Cary-Grove. She did not have her best race at state last year when she finished 143rd. She did finish 45th as a sophomore in 2017. During her track season, Drage ran 5:02 for 1600-meters.

Morgan Magro and Gaby Andrews should challenge for the fifth spot. A thing to watch from these two runners is that they were over a minute behind Berquist at state. That gap needs to close down if this team wants to finish in the top 10.

“Our expectations are to stay healthy and improve from week to week,” Revolta said. “Our goal is the same every year and that is to run our best race at the State Meet.”

9 – Oak Park-River Forest

2018 Finish – 10th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Ashley Raymond

Runners to Watch – Nora Wollen JR (49, 17:36), Josephine Welin SO (80, 18:02), Samantha Duwe SO (113, 18:16), Parker Hulen JR (134, 18:26), Audrey Lewis SR (195, 19:18), Maggie Baran JR, Jana Casey SR, Mary Pavlicek JR, Josie Humbert SO, Madeline Wilkie SR.

Preview – The Huskies were one of the surprise Class 3A teams throughout last season including finishing second in the tough West Suburban Conference-Silver Division Meet. Oak Park-River Forest did make it to the state meet where they finished 10th in Peoria. The team will miss their second and fourth runners who graduated. Oak Park still has five runners back itching for that repeat Peoria trip.

Nora Wollen gives the Huskies a strong top runner in the front. She could challenge for a position in the top 25. Josephine Welin, Samantha Duwe, and Parker Hulen are a strong second through fourth pack. The team had good tight pack running last year that signaled their success in invitationals. They need to have that group within 20 seconds of Wollen. This team could have problems making it back to Peoria if they have a split of 60 seconds behind the pack like they are projected to have.

10 – Winnetka (New Trier)

2018 Finish – 7th IHSA 3A State

Coach – John Burnside

Runners to Watch – Bridget Forbes SR (40, 17:28), Marlee Fradkin SR (50, 17:36), Emma Braband JR (125, 18:21), Maddie Dieffenbacher SR (178, 18:56), Lily Ryan SR, Olivia Bhote JR, Katherine Holmberg SO, Colleen Charchut SO, Mary Caserio JR, Claire West SR, Katherine Immesberger SR.

Previews – When you think of the New Trier Girls Cross Country team, you think of strong pack running from this program. Despite the fact that three of their top seven runners have graduated, the Lady Trevians still have the talent to step up to get this team back to the state meet.

Bridget Forbes and Marlee Fradkin solidify the pack in the front. The two runners finished within eight seconds at last year’s state meet. Both will be close to the top 25. Emma Braband was the team’s fifth runner last year, but I expect big things from her during her junior season. She was part of the team’s 4x800m Relay that won the Class 3A State Championship last May. Braband came back to earn all-state honors finishing eighth in the Class 3A 800 Meter Run. That success should transfer over to this fall.

The next four spots should be up for grabs. “Our rising sophomores including Colleen Charchut, Katie Holmberg and Sam Fellman took a dramatic step forward throughout the summer training and have the potential to make a huge impact for our team,” said their coach John Burnside.

There are things that you expect in life like fireworks on the 4th of July and turkey on Thanksgiving. New Trier being consistently in the top 10 and challenging for a trophy is one of those expectations. The talent is there to make a run at a trophy this year if they get the gap to close down from their pack of three to the rest of the scorers. “We added some more quality days throughout the summer and the girls seemed to respond to the intensity and pull together as a group on the tough days,” Burnside said. “We lost a lot of talent and leadership to graduation. Fortunately, the returning athletes have used the track season and this summer to develop a culture and group personality that is extremely positive. This season we expect to see our top runners take the next step, competing with some of the best Illinois has to offer. There will be a lot of opportunity for the younger runners to compete on the varsity level. We are excited to see how this combination can work together to improve throughout the season.”

11 – Hinsdale (Central)

2018 Finish – 17th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Mark McCabe

Runners to Watch: McKenna Revord SR (14, 16:49), Emma Watcke SR (transfer from Minister OH; 2nd OH D3 State Meet), Taylor Wagner SR (165, 18:45), Louisa Bronson SO, Catie McCabe FR, Lucy Fischer SR, Charlotte Gleason SR, Duska Richert SO, Abby Deuter SO, Marlo Armstrong SO.

Preview – It was not the finish that the Red Devilettes expected last year finishing 17th at state meet. The page turns to another year. It could be one that is memorable for this program. Only two runners are back from that state team. It is the new arrivals that will step in and give this team an enormous push.

They will have a duo in the front that will secure single digit points in major meets. McKenna Revord finished 14th in last year’s state meet. Emma Watcke transferred to Hinsdale Central from Minister OH right before the start of track season. Watcke finished second last fall in the Ohio D3 State Meet. We know what Watcke did in the spring finishing second in the Class 3A 1600 Meter Run. She also ran 10:34.79 for 3200-meters. This will be a tough duo in the front to say the least.

“Emma and McKenna have become best of friends as well as well-matched training partners…all collaboration and the desire to help each other be the best they can be,” said Mark McCabe. “Both will run at D1 Power 5 schools next year and are very fit and ready to go.  I think they will turn out to be the best 1-2 duo we’ve ever had, which says a lot, and one of the best in the State.”

Building their third through fifth runners will be a key but McCabe has the talent to work on that. Catie McCabe finished fifth last year in the IESA Class 2A State Meet and will be an asset in the top five. Louisa Bronson will be also in that first five. She was second last fall in their F/S Conference race and is discovering what she can do according to Coach McCabe. Taylor Wagner was on the state meet team last year. Wagner, along with Lucy Fischer, will give the team a strong fifth/sixth runner. Diana Denemark, who was in the top seven last year, moved to Nashville TN and is no longer at the school.

Central will have a dynamic front two. Time will tell how good their three to five pack will be. We will know how good this team is by the end of September. “We are talented, fit and highly motivated,” Coach McCabe added. “One thing we are not is deep. As long as we continue to stay injury and illness free, good things will come our way. We’re looking forward to the season.”

12 – Elmhurst (York)

2018 Finish – 16th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Lauren DeAngelis

Runners to Watch – Emma Kern SR (112, 18:16), Katelyn Winton SO (115, 18:18), Grace Moriarty SR (116, 18:18), Lydia Hickey SR (150, 18:36), Katelyn Leonard SO (155, 18:38), Kathleen Buhrfiend SO (159, 18:41), Erin Powers SO, Allison Fitzgibbon SO, Maya Curry SR, Margaret Clink SR, Ayesha Siddiqi SR, Anna Clink SO, Brooke Berger FR, Bria Bennis FR, Kate Pratt FR, Mo Buhrfiend FR, Bella Swanson FR.

Preview – The Dukes return six from last year’s 16th place state team. They will miss their #1 runner for the last four years Sarah May. This team is deep in talent.15 to 16 runners could challenge for a spot in their top seven.

“York changed their summer school offerings allowing many more athletes to participate on a regular basis in our summer program. The girls were very consistent, accountable and determined during the summer months.  I feel the 2019 season has the potential to be very successful,” Coach Lauren DeAngelis said. “Our sophomore class has seen dramatic improvements as many of these girls did not participate in the summer program prior to their freshman year but put in a tremendous amount of work this summer camp.”

The top spot in their top seven will be interchangeable in 2019. Emma Kern, Katelyn Winton, and Grace Moriarty will challenge in the front. It would not surprise me if there are three to four runners that could run under 18-minutes for three-miles this fall. The team had a 20 second two through five split last year in the state meet and that kind of pack should not change. Keep an eye on Katelyn Leonard, Lydia Hickey, Kathleen Buhrfiend, Brooke Berger, and Maya Curry to challenge for the two scoring spots.

“This season should be extremely exciting as we have a lot of young talent that has dramatically developed since last season lead by many talented upperclassmen,” DeAngelis said. “The team was extremely dedicated to their summer training and has put in a lot of hard work and miles to prepare for the 2019 season.  We have many new faces who will add to the Dukes strength in hopes for the York Dukes to finish strong on all levels of the WSC and to improve on their 2018 16th place state finish.”

13 – Arlington Heights (Hersey)

2018 Finish – 20th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Danielle Freeman

Runners to Watch - Kate Fredian SR (51, 17:37), Jane Stefanick JR (98, 18:10), Erin Barton SR (129, 18:22), Nora Viers SO (144, 18:33), Hannah Kerschmeier SR (175, 18:54), Katie O’Brien JR, Victoria Jeziorio JR, Erin Moran SR, Sophie Hyndman SO, Sophianne Loh JR, Anna Harden FR, Mackenzie Ginder FR, Emma Van Meveren FR, Renee Skiera FR, Jenna Sanders FR, Gabi Makowski FR.

Preview – This could be a team to watch on their conference level for the next four years. The Huskies finished 20th at the state meet and return four of their first five from that squad. “I was extremely pleased with our summer training this year,” said Danielle Freeman. “Overall, we were stronger as a team. There were no injuries we had to overcome, we increased our mileage from a year ago and all have responded well to that as well as adding in a little more speed work than we would normally do which the girls really enjoyed.”

Katie Fredian and Jane Stefaniak should be the team’s first and second runners heading into the season. Fredian finished 51st at state in 2018 and could push for a top 25 finish. Erin Barton and Nora Viers also were in last year’s top five and will again challenge for those spots.

Then comes a talented freshman group that could make an impact as early as this fall. “This is probably the most talented and experienced freshman class we have had come into our program,” Freeman said. “Three of them (Anna Harden, Mackenzie Ginder and Emma Van Meveren) ran on the same middle school team at St. Peter in Arlington Heights where they won back to back Illinois Lutheran State Championships. Anna Harden was a back to back individual state champion as well.  We also have Renee Skiera (individual 1600m state qualifier last spring) and Jenna Sanders (right on Renee's heels) from a talented Thomas Middle School team joining us in addition to Gabi Makowski who was an individual qualifier in the 1600m run last spring as an 8th grader.

It is always hard to judge a team with a ton of freshman coming into high school cross country. Hersey will run at Fenton and the Richard Spring Invitational in September. We will get a better indication of how good this team could be. “We have talked a lot about this as a team this summer,” stated Freeman. “The girls know this is a good team and are shooting for some lofty goals such as MSL East Division Champions (It's always tough to beat a talented Prospect Knights team), make a run at our first MSL Conference title in 30 years, and to get back to a top 10 finish at the state meet. Above all, they know we have to keep it fun.”

14 – Minooka

2018 Finish – 5th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Kevin Gummerson

Runners to Watch – Julia Dames SR (48, 17:35), Kathryn Cichon SO (67, 17:51), Jocelyn Host SO (79, 18:01), Audrey Boles SO (164, 18:35), Amanda Wilson SR, Brooke Wlodek SO, Meadow Zomparelli SO, Gabrielle Kics FR, Kendra Martin FR, Gabriella McCollom FR, Olivia Krolczyk JR.

Preview – This is a team that we could see in the top 10 by the time we get to the beginning of October. Minooka was one of the elite teams in the state last year finishing fifth and return four runners from that team. They will miss all-state runner Vivian Van Eck as well as Alyssa Hrusosky who was the team’s fifth runner at state. Hrusosky did not come out for the team this fall.

“Summer training was great. It has been fun to see these kids step into new roles on the team, and work towards building that team,” said Kevin Gummerson. “The girls have worked hard, been consistent, and have held each other accountable.  It is also great to see their excitement for this group of freshman. You never know how freshman will be welcomed in. However, we have a group of returners that realize the importance that they can play in this group.”

We could see the same growth curve for Julia Dames as happened with Van Eck from 2017 to 2018, Van Eck finished 26th as a junior, sixth as a senior. Dames finished 48th last year. A top 20 finish is a possibility. Three sophomores will fill parts of the top seven including Kathryn Cichon, Jocelyn Host, and Audrey Boles. Amanda Wilson could be among the top seven. Gummerson has a talented freshman group entering Minooka that includes Gabrielle Kics, Kendra Martin, and Gabriella McCollom that could contribute on the Varsity level.

“Looking at our schedule, every meet is going to have some serious tests, and that is exactly what we want.  Our conference has been getting tougher and tougher every year, and now with the addition of Yorkville and West Aurora, it has been taken to another level,” added Gummerson. “As always, we want to put together the best possible race we can at Detweiller on November 9th. These girls have grasped the concept that the 3A girls is absolutely loaded, and there are no gifts in this state, you have to go out and get it. It has been great to see that attitude present in the preparation phase of the season.  The returning runners are hungry, fit, and excited about this upcoming season.  We also have a lot of girls that are going to be challenging for one of those top 7 spots, and that typically creates a great practice and racing environment.”

15 – Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West)

2018 Finish – 13th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Paul Hass

Runners to Watch – Katelynne Hart SR (1, 15:59), Delaney Engel SO (141, 18:31), Anna Nicoley SO (154, 18:38), Audry Allman SO (158, 18:40), Haley Yeager SR, Jules Bilings SR, Ava Powell SR, Olivia Cline SO, Anna Rojas SO, Belle Adduci JR, Zoe Umlauf JR, Maya Umlauf JR, Aaliyah Collier SR, Alexa Moritz SO.

Preview – The Hilltoppers finished 13th in last year’s state meet with four runners returning from that lineup. One of the returning runners happens to be Katelynne Hart who has been the Class 3A State Champion the last three years.

Audrey Allman will be a factor for this team this fall after injuries plagued her first high school season of cross country. “In 2018 Audrey Allman had a tremendous summer of base-building and was enjoying a very successful season until she suffered a stress fracture that ultimately sidelined her after the Richard Spring Invitational, where she ran 18:06, essentially, on a broken leg,” said her coach Paul Hass. “After 6 weeks of grueling pool workouts Audrey returned to run in the 2018 Niles West Sectional but was reduced to tears after finishing as the team’s seventh runner. Despite an amazing track season where Audrey finished 4th in the 800 at the state meet and ran on two other all-state relays, it is the disappointment from the 2018 XC sectional that fuels Audrey’s desire in cross country to train hard and do the little things that are necessary to stay healthy. To that end, after taking two weeks off after her successful New Balance Nationals track meet, Audrey built up her mileage this summer and is prepared to contribute significantly towards our team success.  I anticipate that Audrey will continue to improve as the season progresses, and if her development is similar to the trajectory of her track season (she couldn’t break 2:30 in the 800 until the end of February),  then Audrey may be running among many team’s top runners by season’s end.  Whether or not that occurs remains to be seen, but I have already learned not to discount what Audrey Allman is capable of achieving.”

Fellow sophomores Delaney Engel and Anna Nicoley will give the team a boost in the top five. Seniors Ava Powell, Haley Yeager, and Jules Billings had a great summer of training and will also contribute in the top five.

Said Coach Hass: “As a team we have no illusions about the challenges that lie ahead for us this season given the significant number of talented teams and coaches that exist in our region, let alone our state.  Specifically, our conference teams will challenge any quality squad in Illinois as Lyons Township, Hinsdale Central, OPRF, York, & Downers Grove North all qualified for state last year and return key elements of their teams.  We lack some of the depth that we enjoyed the last several years and returning only four of last year’s top seven leaves several questions about our varsity group that, hopefully, will be answered this season.

However, each of our returning varsity runners prepared themselves over the summer to improve upon their performances from last year; moreover, we hope some of our returning runners are prepared to step up into a varsity spot and others develop throughout the course of the season into potential varsity scorers.  Though we will likely wear the underdog label in most of the big invitationals on our schedule this year, the girls, nevertheless, look forward to the possibility of surprising people’s predictions about the outlook of our team as the season progresses.”

16 – Mt. Prospect (Prospect)

2018 Finish – 11th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Peter Wintermute

Runners to Watch – Audrey Ginsberg SO (65, 17:50), Annika Erickson JR (96, 18:09). Emily Hubbard SR (103, 18:12), Reese Lettow JR (185, 19:04), Gabriella Piagari SR, Lia Skoufos SR, Hope Wasowicz JR, Elena Barbaric JR, Paige Runkle JR, Cameron Calaway FR, Hailey Erickson FR, Shannon Walsh FR, Sophia Anast FR, Rebecca Petikainen FR.

Preview – One of the things that got Prospect to where they were at the end of last year was some great pack running especially in their top five. The Knights only had a 22 second split as they finished 11th in the state meet. Four runners are back from that team plus some depth on their junior varsity level that is ready to take the step up to varsity.

“This summer the girls were focused on building their base and did so by being consistent and holding each other accountable,” Peter Wintermute said. “The girls have done a good job of pushing each other to be the best versions of themselves and encouraging each other to build off last year's successes. This year's team is tight. It will be the ability to run selflessly and for each other which will be important come October and November. The girls have sniffed success and look to continue to aim high.”

Audrey Ginsburg was the #1 runner for Prospect most of the second half of the season and should be in that position again. Annika Hubbard and Emily Hubbard should continue to be among the top five. They will be the core of the group behind Ginsberg. Lia Skoufos, Hope Wasowicz, Reese Lettow, and Gabriella Piagari should be among the top seven but will need to close the gap on the first three runners. The split on their second through fifth runners is projected to be near 54 seconds. That should be worked on as the year progresses.

“One goal is of course to make it to State and achieve well in the MSL.  We have a number of specific goals that the team will be aiming to hit this season, but we keep those in our camp,” Wintermute said. “This year’s  team has enough experience and young potential to be dangerous.  The team bonding and pack running over the past month and upcoming months will prepare the girls both mentally and physically for the rigors ahead in October/November.”

17 – Cary (Cary-Grove)

2018 Finish – 19th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Mark Anderson

Runners to Watch – Maggie Mason JR (52, 17:38), Morgan Dieschbourg JR (74, 17:58), Delaney Blohm JR (123, 18:20), Ellie Miller JR (149, 18:35), Abby Williams JR (184, 19:02), Teagan Hayes SR (203, 19:29), Jessie Hill SR, Charlie Heck SO, Natalie Warren SO, Claire Walls SR, Disha Dureja SO.

Preview – Cary-Grove came on strong at the end of last season to grab a berth to the state meet winning their conference meet and then finishing third at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. The Trojans finished 19th in the state meet and return six of their top seven. They will miss one of their top five runners Allison Drage who transferred to Barrington High School.

One thing to watch is the health of their top runner Maggie Mason who had a stress fracture in her hip during the track season. “Training went well but all our kids are at different points right now,” Mark Anderson said. “Maggie Mason had to ease her way into the summer as she came back from a stress fracture in her hip from last spring, Delaney Blohm missed a little time to make sure her sore shins were recovering. Most of our top girls were healthy and able to participate in the UW XC camp just a couple weeks ago, so I'm happy with their progress.”

The team had a 57 second split on their top five at the state meet. That will need to come down especially now without one of their top five Drage. Mason, Blohm, Morgan Dieschbourg, and Ellie Miller give the team a solid four. Natalie Warren had a good summer and could jump into the top five along with Abby Williams and Teagan Hayes.

“We just need to keep rolling along, stay healthy and stay fast,” said Anderson. We would obviously like to make it to state again and improve on the 19th place finish we've had over the past two seasons.”

18 – Palatine (Fremd)

2018 Finish – 6th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Joe Marcin

Runners to Watch – Rebecca Markham SR, Emme Beaupre SR, Julia LaDuke SR, Emma Odle SR, Julia Finegan SR, Sara Nolting JR, Marisa Bah SR, Norah Odle JR, Jillian Price SO, Kaitlyn Ma JR, Ronni Barto JR, Audrey Klink SR, Karli Decker SO, Amanda Markham FR, Hannah Rosen FR, Yejee Lee FR, Shannon Kaleta FR.

Preview – The expectations for Fremd should be high this fall. All seven runners are back for the Vikings that just missed qualifying for the state meet by seven points finishing sixth in the sectional.

“Our summer training went very well,” Joe Marcin said, “Just missing out on a qualifying berth last season has made the returning runners extra focused. This energy has helped drive the entire team to work hard and make each other better. We included some new training techniques which focused on strength and team building. It was an awesome training atmosphere to be part of.”

The team ran a 53 second on their top five in last year’s sectional led by #1 runner Rebecca Markham. Emme Beaupre was just five seconds back giving Fremd a solid 1-2 in the front. Julia LaDuke and Emma Odle lead the pack behind these two. Markham and Beaupre could be running in the 17’s this year. Getting that split down would be a big help. This team is hungry to extend their season an extra week.

“The returning top 7 have progressed together very well as a group. Emme Beaupre who did not run track, has transitioned back into top group extremely well,” said Marcin. “We want to carry the same drive/focus from the summer into the season.  The girls are hungry to improve on last season’s finish.”

19 – Lockport (Township)

2018 Finish – 22nd IHSA 3A State

Coach – Regan Cronholm

Runners to Watch – Josephine Bober JR (76, 17:59), Anna Kozak SR (140, 18:31), Samantha Weisner SO (156, 18:39), Alexandra Skibicki SR (172, 18:52), Abbey Kozak SR (196, 19:19), Alexa Keap SR, Madison Polinski SR, Kaira Stricklin SO, Elizabeth Bollinger JR, Maggie Bollinger SR, Grace Mildice JR.

Preview – Five runners are back from Lockport’s state team that finished 22nd last year in Peoria. Josephine Bober was the team’s #1 runner in their conference and sectional meet. She should again be in the top spot in 2019. The team usually has a tight five runner pack split. It was 51 seconds last year at state and 59 seconds in their sectional. Anna Kozak should be the runner to lead that pack which is projected to have close to being 60 seconds. With the classification changes last December, Lockport could be moved from Normal to the Hinsdale Central Sectional which would be a tougher road to state for them.

20 – Downers Grove (North)

2018 Finish – 23rd IHSA 3A State

Coach- Tim McDonald

Runners to Watch – Melissa Jachim JR (87, 18:06), Eva Bednard SR (119, 18:19), Rylan Gaspar JR (152, 18:37), Elle Gross SR (167, 18:47), Gianna Ferraro SR (194, 19:18), Annie Bieda JR, Caroline Scott SO, Victoria Miller SR, Claire Pyne FR, Ava Geiger FR, Maddie Casey FR, Maeve Courtney FR.

Preview – The Trojans finally made it over the hump making it to the state meet where they finished 23rd overall. Five runners are back from that team. A big loss for the team is that their #2 runner at last year’s state meet Katie Figliomeni came down with an injury on both hips that required surgery. She will not run cross country or perhaps track in the next year.

“I thought training went well this summer,” said Tim McDonald. “Every team deals with vacations and school trips, but once we got going, I feel like we have improved steadily with a good vibe going. We did not do anything unusual. We just focused on steadily increasing our volume while mixing in some short workouts here and there.”

Melissa Jachim should be the team’s #1 runner as she was in the state series. She had a great summer of training that could position her to run times in the 17’s. Eva Bednard, Rylan Gaspar, and Ellie Gross give the team a solid nucleus to work from. McDonald has a good freshman class coming in with Claire Pyne and Ava Geiger among the runners in that group that could contribute immediately.

“After the state meet, I felt really good about where we were at,” added McDonald. “We had all 7 runners returning who ran at Detweiller and I knew we had some freshmen coming in who could push the returnees or even earn a spot in the top 7. I thought we would have plenty of time to leave the freshmen down and experience some success before potentially competing for top 7 spots. Now due to health issues, we need some returning athletes and/or freshmen to step up and fill in the void. It is a long ways away, but we have the talent to challenge for the opportunity to compete at Detweiller. We will just need some of the young athletes to be ready to step up.”

21 – O’Fallon

2018 Finish – 18th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Neil James

Runners to Watch – Julia Monson SO (69, 17:55), Sofia Parker JR (91, 18:07), Peyton Schieppe SO (100, 18:11), Kaitlyn Walker SR (135, 18:26), Emma Jordan SR (139, 18:30), Kimberly Davenport SR (190, 19:10), Sophie Wichlac SR (204, 19:31), Maddy Vorce JR, Peyton Mutters JR, Mary Kate Trelow SO, Olivia Anderson SO, Brianne Berres JR.

Preview - The Panthers could take the step to the next level this fall after finishing 18th in last year’s state meet. All seven runners from that team are returning and hungry to get back to Peoria. This team has the talent to finish in the top 15 when we get to November.

“Our top girls were very focused this summer and put in a good amount of work,” Neil James said. “The intensity was higher for the top group than it has been the past few seasons.” The top five split at the state meet was only 35 seconds off Julia Monson’s 69th place finish. Monson and Sofia Parker should again lead this team and could be running close to 17:30 by the end of the season. Kaitlyn Walker missed most of the season due to an injury, but she still was the team’s fourth runner at state. She could make the step closer to the front this fall. Peyton Schieppe and Emma Jordan again give O’Fallon strong runners in the fourth and fifth spots. The improvement is showing on this team. It would not surprise me if five runners are under 18-minutes by the time they run again at Detweiller in November.

Since we return our top 7 from last year, we are more experienced than we have been over the past few seasons,” added James. “We want to improve upon our 18th place finish last year.  The girls have some lofty goals for this season and ready to put forth the effort to achieve those.  We made some changes in our training focus last year and it really paid dividends at the end of the season.  We want to continue that training and try to push it to the next level.”

22 – Naperville (Central)

2018 Finish – 10th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Matt Blondell

Runners to Watch – Emily R. Scott SR, Haley Engels JR, Kayla Zimmer SR, Cora Marcet JR, Althea Foster SR, Thriska Bandepallee JR, Michelle Loar SR, Mary McGrail SR, Kate Scrima SR, Carlyn Sokol SR, Noelle Veome SR.

Preview – The performance that the Redhawks had in finishing 10th last year at the Waubonsie Valley Sectional is not indicative of how good this team can be. Six runners are back from that squad. Emily R. Scott was the top runner for the team most of last year. She did not have her best race of the season at sectionals and was the team’s sixth runner. It would not surprise me if she runs under 18-minutes this fall.

“Our training went well this summer,” said their coach Matt Blondell. “We have seen measurable growth over our 8 weeks of summer training. Our key returnees have put in a lot of hard work and effort.”

This team could again run with a tight split on their top five. The split was only 13 seconds in their sectional race led by Haley Engels. Scott led the pack at the DuPage Valley Conference Meet when Central ran a 36 second split. What hurt the Redhawks in the sectional race was the pack was too far back. That is where Scott comes into play. If she can run under 18-minutes with the team having a 30 second split, good things could happen for this group.

“We have a nice core group of seniors to lead this year’s team,” said Blondell. “We are all on the same page when we reflect on last season. We fell short of expectations. We all agree that we can be better this year. Our seniors have helped the team set goals that reflect this vision. We are determined to finish stronger in 2019.”

23 – Geneva

2018 Finish – 6th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Peter Raak

Runners to Watch – Andrine Larsen SR, Kayla Stone SO, Lauren Hasty JR, Lily Ryan SO, Sarah Pratt SR, McKenna Mertes FR, Andrea Ramirez SO, Julianna Longo SO, Shannon Laukaitis JR. Grace Foley SR.

Preview – Geneva came close to making it to the state meet last year. They finished sixth at the Waubonsie Valley Sectional missing the top five by 10 points. Things could be different for the Vikings this year even though they will miss all-state runner Sophia McDonnell who graduated. Five runners return from that sectional team.

“The training went well as we had a group of girls who were very consistent with their training this summer,” Geneva coach Peter Raak. Andrine Larsen has been in the top seven all three years of high school running should be the #1 runner on this team. Lauren Hasty and Kayla Stone could be close to Larsen. Raak feels that freshman McKenna Mertes, who has been running with the team’s top runners, could make an impact. This team is projected to have a split of near or under 30 seconds for their top five. If Larsen can move up and the pack follows, chances are good that Geneva could make that state trip that avoided them last year.

“Our expectations are to build the team and be competitive in the conference,” said Raak. “This team will be more of a pack racing team and will rely on a solid group.”

24 – Oswego East

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Oswego East Regional

Coach – Lisa Cook

Runners to Watch - Madison Zarembski SO (42, 17:29), Morgan Ede SR, Naylah Allen JR, Maddi Amer SO, Ana Barroso SO, Kara Webb JR, Grace Praxmarer FR, Veronica Hamilton FR, Monserrat Tago FR, Leah Allgaier FR, Ana Clark SO, Hannah King SO, Liliana Mendoza SR.

Preview – One of the bigger surprises from last year’s regional weekend was when a ranked Oswego East team could not advance out of their own regional. It could be something that fuels the Wolves to a possible state berth in 2019. “We learned a lot from last year's Regional race,” said Coach Lisa Cook. “Honestly, it was one of the toughest days of my coaching career, but we are looking for those lessons to pay off big time this year.”

Five runners are back from that team. Madison Zarembski leads this squad as she did last year as a freshman. She qualified for the state meet finishing 42nd. A top 25 finish is within her reach. Morgan Ede gives them a strong presence in the second spot. Cook thinks a strong freshman class coming in could have one or two runners that could find their way into the top seven.

“Our coaching staff was very impressed by the responses we received from our girls following our Regional (7th place) performance,” Cook added. “While very disappointed and quite shocked, our athletes were poised and insightful.  Our focus is on training and racing like every day is our last, as we learned that you don't have to fall far to fall out of the state series (especially in our regional/sectional).  My personal goal is to look back and feel that our 2018 finish was a blessing in disguise because of what it will allow us to accomplish this year.”

25 – Palatine

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Joe Parks

Runners to Watch – Anne Marie Jordan JR, Ellie Roy JR, Mia Solano JR, Laura Seeberger JR, Elise Condon SO, Stephanie Churchill SO, Nicole Sobkowiak SR, Holly Roehrborn SR, Melody Medina-Harlow SO, Daniela Casillas SR, Emma Busch SO, Jennifer Lopez JR, Karen Patino-Rodriguez JR.

Preview – It is hard to read this team heading into this season. Five runners return from last year’s team that did not make it to the state meet for the first time since 1999. The Lady Pirates may have to do it without their top runner Anne Marie Jordan. The junior had a heartbreaking finish to last year in the sectional race when she qualified for state but ran while suffering a major leg injury.

“Anne Marie has had an up and down summer unfortunately,” said her coach Joe Parks. “She has run much of the summer with some cross training intermixed. She’s also still rehabbing to add some strength and balance to her running.  She’s had a few really encouraging moments but has struggled to keep consistent as she still building back from a pretty tough injury that required surgery last December.  If there is anyone who can make it back, it’s her. I’m confident over time she will be back and better than ever, just may not be until late in season she looks herself.”

Without Jordan, Palatine will rely on a strong junior group led by Ellie Roy, Mia Solano, and Laura Seeberger. Elise Condon and Stephanie Churchill should step up into the team’s fourth and fifth runner position. The split on their top five without Jordan should be near 50 seconds. A key will be moving that pack up.

A team with or without Jordan still has a chance to advance of the Schaumburg Sectional. It will take a lot to accomplish that.

Said Coach Joe Parks: “I always expect to be down in the Peoria come November. Last fall was the first time I had ever been around high school cross country (as an athlete or coach) and not competed in the state meet. It was tough for all involved. Whether or not we continue this trend or make a return really comes down to how bad these girls want that experience. We have a proven formula for success here, but the team has to buy in, do the work, and bring an attitude to competing that they want to be great. Last year we were riddled with injury issues like I’ve never seen before. It happens, however we’ve been very fortunate over the years to avoid something like this, so hopefully it’s an anomaly.

Honestly with this group it could go either way. Either our leaders will be determined to make a return, or we will race and train in a timid manner that will likely not get the job done. Like I said they have to want it bad enough they are willing the sacrifice for one another day in and day out. We will see. I’m very optimistic and excited to see what type of team this group can develop into.”

The Next 20 Teams (in alphabetical order)

Algonquin (Jacobs)

2018 Finish – 12th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Kevin Christian

Runners to Watch – Alyson Doherty SR, Alyssa Demma SR, Elisabeth Kania SO, Kelly Carpenter SO, Alexandra Skuza SO, Ella Tamburrino SO, Ashley Panagopoulos SR, Karolina Porzezinska SO, Kaylee Stejc SO, Alyssa Madera FR, Natatli Varela FR, Bridget Moore FR.

Preview – Jacobs finished 12th last year at the Hoffman Estates Sectional and will look to improve on that finish. Five of their top six runners are back. “We just want to compete at the top of the Fox Valley Conference,” Coach Kevin Christian said. “With Cary-Grove being downstate the last few years in 3A, and Crystal Lake South and Prairie Ridge being some of the top 2A teams, the top is crowded, but we feel as if we can compete with anyone.”

Alyson Doherty should be the team’s runner. The senior could qualify individually for state. Alyssa Demma should be the runner that leads the pack. The Golden Eagles could get close to a team qualifying place in the top five. They will just need to make sure they have a five runner split under 52 seconds.

Aurora (Metea Valley)

2018 Finish – 8th 3A Oswego East Regional

Coach – Eric Anerino

Runners to Watch – Keely Behr SO, Emily Koldberg SR, Sophia Sandy SR, Jenna Boyle SR, Sarah Maggio SO, Olivia Reed SO, Hailey Finch SO, Shannon Farmer SO, Eileen McKernan SO, Megha Chada SR.

Preview – Metea Valley missed advancing out of regionals finishing eighth in the tough regional at Oswego East. Five runners return from that team led by sophomore Sophia Behr and senior Emily Koldberg. The team is projected to have a 69 second split to start the season. Moving the pack up and lower the split will extend their season an extra week.

Aurora (Waubonsie Valley)

Ashley Heidenrich had a good track season qualifying for the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run. Her senior season should prove that she can make it to Peoria in November. Fellow senior Katelyn Mullinax averaged being 35 seconds behind Heidenrich in their final two races in 2018 giving this team a solid first and second runners. Work will need to be done to build a strong top five that can keep a split on the group under 90 seconds.

Chicago (Taft)

Preview – The Eagles will look to improve on last year’s 16th place sectional finish. Taft returns five from that lineup that will contend for the Chicago Public League Championships. They finished second in their league championship in 2018. Sydney Partyka has steed up over the past year including dropping her 1600-meters personal best to 5:08.25. She qualified for the state meet last fall. She could be near the top 25 in November. The two through five runner pack will need to stay within 60 seconds of Partyka and stay within 25 to 30 seconds of each other if they want to finish among the top ten in their sectional.

Fox Lake (Grant Community)

2018 Finish – 15th – IHSA 3A State

Coach – Jeff Durlak

Runners to Watch – Aly Negovetich SO (4, 16:33), Eliza Scoggin SR (166, 18:46), Laura Bishop SO (171, 18:52), Drue Polka SR (200, 19:24), Taylor Bushman SR, Alexia Bunge SR, Brianna Osmon FR.

Preview – It could be tough for Grant Community to make it back to the state meet after losing three key members of their top seven because of graduation. They do have Aly Negovetich leading them. She had a great freshman season finishing fourth last year at state.

“We graduated three seniors (Danielle Osmon, Eva Cardy, Jana Nehila) who really helped grow the program to the level it is at right now and will be difficult to replace,” said Jeff Durlak. “Aly, Drue, Laura, and Eliza all return from last year which gives us a good starting point.  Laura kept improving throughout the season last fall and continued that improvement during the track season, so she is ready for a strong sophomore season.  It will be interesting to see how things progress and how our lineup develops as the season goes on with our other returners and our newcomers.  Hopefully, we can stay healthy throughout the season to have a chance at repeating for the conference championship and have a strong postseason performance.”

What could give their top five a boost according to Durlak is Brianna Osmon. “Brianna Osmon is a freshman who has been at our summer camp for years and trained with us all summer who will help us this year,” said Durlak.

Gurnee (Warren Township)

2018 Finish – 9th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Brett Heimstead

Runners to Watch – Raina Rice SO, Taylor Letza JR, Madison Juenger SR, Hailey Smith SR, Brooke Sturt SO, Chloe Yoder SO, Morgan Liebau SR, Nicole Harrison JR, Sophia Iaconis SO.

Preview – The Blue Devils flew under the radar of most everyone in 2018 until it got close to the state series. Warren Township first won the North Suburban Conference Meet then the Class 3A Libertyville Regional on their way to a ninth-place finish at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. The expectations for this team in 2019 are high with hopes of getting into the sectional top five possible. Five runners return from that 2018 sectional team.

“We have had a real solid summer. During our training the girls have been putting in some good miles and most importantly doing it together,” said Brett Heimstead. “We have been getting in solid long runs of 8-10 miles. on some tough routes. No individual athlete stood out this summer. The thing that did stand out was our consistency and team mentality. Our theme this year is “energy” and getting the most out of every runner, every day.”

Raina Rice should again be the team’s #1 runner. Taylor Latza should lead the pack behind Rice. The split on the top five will be something to watch. It was 76 seconds in the sectional race. Warren getting to state will require a five runner split under 59 seconds to get to Peoria in November.

Huntley

2018 Finish – 12th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Matt Kaplan

Runners to Watch – Bailey Wilk SR, Genevieve Callatz SO, Rachel Carlson SO, Annie Mitchell JR, Grace Allen JR, Emily Glaus SR, Emma Hornickel JR, Delaney Cairns SO, Madison Grubbs SO, Gen Porsche SR, Molly Sutter JR, Brittney Burek FR, Breanna Burek FR.

Preview – The Red Raiders should be a team that is among the top 10 squads in the St. Charles East Sectionals. It will not be a surprise if they are close to state qualifying berth. Huntley finished 12th in their sectional last year but are improved ready to make the move up. Five runners from the sectional team are back. The team can go at least 12 deep in talent that could jump into the top seven some time this season.

Bailey Wilk should again be the team #1 runner entering her senior season. The gap behind Wilk is projected to be 35 seconds to the second runner. They need to get closer together with a pack led by Grace Allen and Genevieve Callatz. Coach Matt Kaplan also thinks that freshmen twins Brittney and Breanna Burek could be factors on their top seven by the time Huntley gets to their conference meet and the state series.

“I'm really excited for our girls team this 2019 season,” Kaplan said. “Last season, my first as head coach was a great learning experience for the girls and me. Our team has a lot of returning runners and that depth on the roster is always a positive. Our group of returning girls earned great experience last season and look to build on the success we saw last year. Last season our girls team saw our boys team qualify for the state meet.  I've challenged this 2019 team to use them as an example and set their team goals high because there's a lot of potential in this group.  We will look to reach week to week improvements and finish strong in the post season.”

Joliet (West)

2018 Finish – 8th 3A Quincy Sectional

Coach -Matt Almon

Runners to Watch – Joslyn Prosek SO (78, 18:00), Ashley Lang SR, Yesenia Suarez SR, Tracey Renteria SO, Lia Mastin JR, Leticia Castillo SR, Asya Echols SO, Vivianna Cortes SO, Stephanie Delatorre SO, Dina Olivera SO, Julia Cazares FR, Arianna Croom FR.

Preview – It could be an interesting year for this Joliet West Girls team. The team has the talent to be in the hunt for a state bid with six runners back from the sectional team that finished eighth. Joslyn Prosek qualified individually for state last year placing 78th. We should see Prosek with more consistent times in the 17’s. The top five split off Prosek is projected to be 74 seconds. Leticia Castillo and Ashley Lang will be the runners to help close that gap.

“I’m looking forward to watching our team continue to grow and develop as a unit,” Coach Matt Almon said. “With the additions to West Aurora and Yorkville into the Southwest Prairie Conference, I hope to see us contend to be in the top half of our conference meet and be in the conversation for one of the 5 teams advancing out of our sectional.”

Libertyville

2018 Finish – 13th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Alison Reifenberg

Runners to Watch – Bree Ponchak SO, Annalese Chudy JR, Lyann Tam JR, Katharine Meyer SO, Grace Kraft SR, Grace Mudd SO, Claire Arnold JR, Kylie Skibitzki SO.

Preview – We could see the Lady Tigers among the top 10 teams in their sectional after finishing 13th at Hoffman Estates. Four runners are back from that sectional team. They will miss sophomore Brielle Rochester who will participate in travel soccer in the fall. She ran 17:18 at Detweiller Park before she became injured towards the end of last September.

Bree Ponchak was the team’s #1 runner after Rochester went out and gives the team a strong runner in the front. The key is their two through five runner pack that will need to stay within 45 seconds of each other in order to challenge for the North Suburban Conference title and a spot in the state meet.

Lombard (Glenbard East)

2018 Finish – 11th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – Joe Latala

Runners to Watch – Emily Anderson SR, Laura Delatorre SR, Maddie Welten JR, Erin Donovan SO, Sonja Wise JR, Allyson Griffith SR, Alyssa Gaski JR, Ella Schindler SO, Lorelai Freese SO, Molly Galvin SR.

Preview – Glenbard East will be the team to beat in the Upstate Eight Conference this season after winning the title in 2018. The Rams return six of their top seven runners from the sectional team that finished 11th at Niles West.

The team is projected to have a five runner split of under 45 seconds. Emily Anderson and Laura Delatorre should be the top runners for this team. Their tight split will help them repeat in the UEC. It will be a matter of moving that pack closer to the front to move up the sectional rankings ladder.

Naperville (Neuqua Valley)

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Amanda Ameling

Runners to Watch – Julian Rushing SR, Emily Stine JR, Maria Widmann JR, Annie Amundsen SR, Isabela Gallo JR, Katie Kingsbury SR, Tala Yacoub JR, Elizabeth Hofemann JR, Angela Sun SO, Ashley Robinson SO.

Preview – The pack running of the Wildcats prevailed at the end of last year to get them a seventh-place finish at the Waubonsie Valley Sectional Neuqua only had a nine second split from their second through fourth runners; the overall top five split was 52 seconds. They lost two of the top three from that squad but return five.

“We had a core group of committed runners,” said Coach Amanda Ameling. “As a program, we currently are focusing on setting a team culture that fosters support and encouragement. We have been going through a culture shift the past few years and I believe this is the first summer that things are really starting to set in. The girls also were more diligent with two a days this summer, so we put in a good amount of mileage. They are eager to get after it but also appear to be being smart with their training. We are all currently healthy (fingers crossed). Also, the freshmen turnout was awesome. They were dedicated and demonstrated leadership, which is always promising for the future.”

There are no real “star” runners that will give this team a single digit number in huge invitationals. They again will have great pack running. Julia Rushing and Emily Stine should lead a pack that should have a split under 60 seconds. Moving the pack up in races will be a key.

“Comparing this year with last year, I think we are stronger mentally and are more driven to achieve our goals,” Ameling said. “As a team, we do not have one stand out runner so to achieve our goals we are going to need every single person to chip in and do their part. Our expectation is to qualify for state as a team.”

Normal (Community)

2018 Finish – 12th 3A Quincy Sectional

Coach – Tom Patten

Runners to Watch – Olivia Hartke SO, Justine Parks JR, Reagan Spand JR, Kaitlyn Bryce SR, Lauren Sanderson JR, Courtney Dage SR, Sheri Stewart SR, Jessica Leftwich SR, Anna Sewell JR, Kruti Patel JR.

Preview – Normal Community could move into the sectional top 10 this fall after finishing 12th at Quincy a year ago. Olivia Hartke was the team’s #1 runner for most of the year. She was sick the week of sectionals and fell to the team’s fourth runner. Hartke ran 17:53 as a freshman at Detweiller. She could run faster this fall. Their second through fifth runner pack could be under 30 seconds. Getting that pack to within 45 seconds of Hartke could mean big things for this team.

Northbrook (Glenbrook North)

2018 Finish – 16th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Bob Leblanc

Runners to Watch – Natalie Sandlow JR (21, 17:03), Alexandra Chertok SR, Chloe MacMillin SR, Kelsey Lundgaard SO, Megan Fahrney SR, Nell Badgley SO, Gretchen Parker SO, Kylie Wilson JR, Wen Qing Leshuk SR.

Preview – Glenbrook North should look to improve on last year’s 16th place sectional finish. Five runners are back from that team headed by all-state runner Natalie Sandlow who finished 21st at state. She has a better base this summer according to coach Bob Leblanc and could be among the top 15 runners at state this fall. The pack behind Sandlow will have a split of close to two minutes. That needs to come down for the team to be a top 10 sectional force.

“We had one of our largest groups ever this summer, so that was great to see, Leblanc said. “We lost quite a few seniors, however, so we're looking for more runners to step in and begin running with our top group.  That top group put in some quality miles and looks ready to run, but they need teammates to join them. We always say we work hard, work together, run safe, and have fun. If we do that times will drop, and success will follow.”

Plainfield (North)

2018 Finish – 25th IHSA 3A State

Coach – Tammy Gummerson

Runners to Watch – Lauren Walczak SO (181, 19:01), Sarah Conley SR (182, 19:01), Emily Bedford SR (186, 19:05), Aminah Hussain SO (189, 19:09), Riley Frankel SR (209, 20:13), Katie Nalley JR, Michelle Masis SO, Emily Shafron SO, Olivia Henze SR, Taylor Green FR.

Preview – The key for the Tigers this fall is to move their pack more towards the front in order to get back to the state meet. It could be tough for North to do that after finishing 25th last November at Detweiller Park. They return five of their top seven.

North will miss all-state runner Juliana Stogsdill who has graduated and is now at Ball State University. Stogsdill, the team’s top runner for all four of her high school years, guaranteed a low number in the front. The team has talent and a tight running attitude having an eight second split between Lauren Walsczak, Sarah Conley, Emily Bedford, and Aminah Hussain. Taylor Green is a freshman that could contribute in the top seven some time this season.

“We had a nice group for the summer with a couple of non-distance runners from track coming out for cross country,” Coach Tammy Gummerson said. “I’m looking forward to see what these ladies can do this fall.”

Rockton (Hononegah)

2018 Finish – 21st IHSA 3A State

Coach – Darryl Rohrer

Runners to Watch – Hailey Henry SO (124, 18:20), Lauren Johnston JR (151, 18:37), Erin Collins SO, Hannah Pickard SR, Isabel Henry SO, Megan Peterson SR, Melina Touvannas SO, Kaitlyn Wrege SO, Jubilee Rukin JR, Amelia Pickard SO, Ryanne Bronniman SO, Ava Tarara JR.

Preview – “Last year was an amazing year for Hononegah Girls Cross Country, said coach Darryl Rohrer. “With our first state appearance in school history, it was pretty special.  Unfortunately, we lost 5 of our 7 starters to graduation. However, my 2 remaining starters in Hailey Henry and Lauren Johnston, had a solid end to the season, and my post season runners from last year are all returning.”

Henry and Johnston give the team good leadership in the front and should run close together. Johnston was an all-state runner as a freshman can could take a step back to that level this fall. Erin Collins, Hannah Pickard and Isabel Henry are ready to step up from the junior varsity level to contribute to the team’s top five. This team will need a split under 65 seconds to get close to another sate berth. There could be a lot of growing pains the first month of the season but should be ready to go by the time they get to the state series.

St. Charles (East)

2018 Finish – 11th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Brad Kaplan

Runners to Watch – Alice Abbott JR (9, 16:40), Gia Klasa SO, Venezia Munoz JR, Hannah Kilpatrick SO, Faith Piercy JR, Grace Jackson SR, Amelia Bellizzi SO, Sydney Tobin SO, Clarissa Kelly SR, Laci Chivari SO.

Preview – The Lady Saints will return five runners from last year’s 11th place sectional finish. Alice Abbott should again be the team’s #1 runner. The junior finished ninth last November at state. The pack behind Abbott will need to be close together since they are figured to be two minutes behind Abbott. Gia Klasa and Venezia Munoz should lead that pack.

St. Charles (North)

2018 Finish – 8th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Shari Hayes

Runners to Watch – Rachel Price SO (18, 17:01), Grace Dorrance JR, Ella Townsend JR, Macy Watts SO, Isabella Morgan JR, Elise Panzer JR, Abby Liesen SR, Anna Watts SR, Jennifer Nickel JR, Katy Liesen SR.

Preview – This is a young team that could make their presence known on the state level in October. Four runners return from the sectional team that finished seventh at the Waubonsie Valley Sectional. Their top six runners this year could either be sophomores or juniors.

Rachel Price had a strong freshman season ending with an all-state 18th place finish. Grace Dorrance give the North Stars a strong second runner that could be under 60 seconds of Price. Ella Townsend and Macy Watts are the other returning runners that could stay close to Dorrance. North could challenge for a top five sectional spot but will need to keep their pack behind their top two close together.

Wheaton (North)

2018 Finish – 6th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – Peter Anderson

Runners to Watch – Tavinya Taylor SO (82, 18:02), Sophie Daigle SR, Sophia Spencer SO, Elanor Quinn JR, Anna Roe SO, Ella Kannegiesser SR, Elena Dansdill JR, Emma Beausoleil SO, Morgan McNally JR, Maggie Malee SO, Olivia Jeanette SR.

Preview – The Falcons came close in the tough Niles West Sectional last fall finishing sixth returning five from that group. Wheaton North taking that next step up into the top five is not impossible for this group. “The girls worked hard and stayed focused. Girls who were away on vacation still emailed me for their specific workouts. Many, many girls dropped their two-mile time trial time from the first week to the last week,” said new Wheaton North Coach Peter Anderson.

Tavinya Taylor surprised some by qualifying for the state meet and placing 82nd. A top 50 finish is within the reach for her. Sophie Daigle finished two seconds behind Taylor in the sectional race and helps give the Falcons a presence in the front. Keeping their top five split under 95 seconds will be something to watch for.

“we would like to finish higher up as a team in the fiercely competitive DuKane Conference,” added Anderson. “We would also like to qualify a team for the State Meet this November.  Our sectional will still be very difficult, but we're determined to build on the 6th place finish we had there and the individual State Meet qualifier we had.”

Wilmette (Loyola Academy)

2018 Finish – 15th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – ChrisJon Simon

Runners to Watch – Jenna Rekoske SR, Hayes Flanagan JR, Claudia Herman JR, Meghan O’Donaghue SO, Alex Guzzardo SR, Eva Holton JR, Annmarie Collins SO, Caitlyn Garofoli SO, Saoirse O’Brien JR, Sydney Richards SO.

Preview – The Lady Ramblers will look to build off the 15th place finish from last year’s Niles West Sectional. They do have the talent to accomplish that returning five. Jenna Rekoske, Hayes Flanigan, and Claudia Herman should be within 10 seconds of each other giving Loyola a tight pack in the front. Having that pack move closer to the front will be something to watch for and get this team challenging to get close to the top five. They will be one of the favorites in a tight GCAC Conference.

Other Teams to Watch (in alphabetical order)

Bartlett

2018 Finish – 14th 3A Waubonsie Valley Sectional

Coach – Christina Rentner

Runners to Watch – Jenna Buchanan SO (47, 17:35), Camille Buchanan JR (93, 18:09), Jillian Murdoch SO, Anna Zaborowski SR, Kayci Regaldo JR, Bridget Benson JR, Biak Sung SR, Lucy Beck SR, Sareena Shah SR, Risa Jones JR.

Preview – The Hawks will have hopes to challenge for the Upstate Eight Conference title and move up from last year’s 14th place sectional finish. Their top six runners return from the sectional lineup led by Jenna and Camille Buchanan. Both sisters qualified for the state meet last year led by Jenna (47th) then Camille (93rd). Both could be close to all-state finish this fall. Jillian Murdoch should lead the pack behind their front two which projects to be four minutes behind. That split will improve as the season goes on.

“Many of these girls put in the work, but still struggle during races,” said new Bartlett Coach Christina Rentner. “So, my biggest expectation for them is to work on being mentally tough... to trust their training and not be afraid to leave their comfort zones. We have a lot of girls running around 21 and 22 minutes, which is okay, but their training suggests they can do otherwise. We need to work on breaking down mental barriers and not being afraid to get after it.”

Belleville (East)

2018 Finish – 6th 3A Quincy Sectional

Coach – Brad Pfeiffer

Runners to Watch – Myecia Bright SR, Gabrielle Griggs SO, Adelin Oser SO, Olivia Murnane SO, Tessa Heskett SO, Jazmyn Zurita JR, Olivia Harris SO.

Preview – The Lancers were the surprise team in the Quincy Sectional in 2018 as they finished sixth. Four runners are back from that race including their second runner Myecia Bright. The majority of their top seven could be sophomores. The team could go through some growing pains the first month of the season.

Chicago (Lane Tech)

2018 Finish – 14th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – Kris Roof

Runners to Watch – Daniella Martinez SR, Megann Lawlor SR, Allison Glenn JR, Sophia Rivera JR, Laine Sullivan JR, Fiona Glascott JR, Nora Laff SO, Genesis Alameda JR, Devon Schlesinger JR, Avery Moss SR.

Preview – Lane Tech could make it close in the Chicago Public League this fall. The Indians return four from the team that finished 14th at the Niles Sectional. Daniela Martinez was the team’s #1 runner all last year and should be in the same position. The team will need to get their split down to under 60 seconds to challenge for a team title. Megann Lawlor should lead that pack. Laine Sullivan had a strong sophomore track season which included being on the team’s state final 4x800m Relay team. She will be a factor in the top five this fall.

Chicago (Marist)

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Marist Sectional

Coach – Patrick Quinn

Runners to Watch – Nora McClorey SO (169, 18:49), Cecilia Light JR, Amanda Tracy SR, Lindsey Richter JR, Brigid Englehart SR, Baily Butler SR, Nora McNicholas SO, Emma Karczewski SO, Sara Hughes JR, Grace Allocco SO.

Preview – The Redhawks will look to improve on their seventh-place sectional finish. The possibility of getting to state is legitimate considering sixth-place sectional team Fenwick is now in Class 2A. Nora McClorey qualified for state individually and will lead this team. Their top five sectional split was 89 seconds. If that does not come down, it might be tough for Marist to extend their season an extra week.

Chicago (Whitney Young)

2018 Finish – 10th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – Al Edwards

Runners to Watch – Emma Young JR, Marley Kravitz JR, Alex Burr SR, River Curry JR, Daphne Murray SO, Stella Lyung JR, Morgan Michich JR, Elena Nevins JR, Francesca Sandovi SO, Alana Berry SR, Reese Hoffman FR.

Preview – A team that has the talent to defend their Chicago Public League Championships. The Dolphins return four runners from their sectional team that finished 10th. They will miss all-state runner Ella Behrens who has graduated and is now at Washington University in St. Louis. Emma Young was the team’s second runner at the city championships, third at sectionals and is projected to lead this team. There are a number of runners that could challenge for a top five spot. We will find out how good this team is by the beginning of October.

Edwardsville

2018 Finish – 24th IHSA 3A State

Coach – George Patrylak

Runners to Watch – Abby Korak SR (92, 18:07), Makenna Lueking SO (193, 19:17), Emiley England JR (197, 19:19), Riley Knoyle FR, Jillian Welsh SO, Kaitlyn Loyett JR, Anna Singh SO, Shaelin Ruzich JR (transfer from Reed-Custer IL), Arabella Ford FR, Alyssa Mollet FR, Madison Strotheide FR.

Preview – It could be a challenge for Edwardsville to qualify for the state meet for the seventh year in a row. The Tigers finished 24th at last year’s state meet but return only three runners from that team. One of them is Abby Korak. She did not have her best race last fall finishing 92nd but did earn all-state honors in the Class 3A Girls 1600 Meter Run in the spring. Coach George Patrylak thinks that Riley Knoyle, who was all-state in the IESA Eighth-Grade Meet last October should step into the second spot and could qualify individually. The key will be the team’s third through seventh runner pack led by Makenna Lueking and Emiley England. Togetherness should be the watch word for this group to cut the possible split down from their top two runners.

Glenview (Glenbrook South)

2018 Finish – 10th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Meaghan Fastert

Runners to Watch – Kate Jortberg SR (22, 17:06), Molly Durrow SO, Alex Kleeman JR, Gigi Walsh SR, Julia Smith SO, Annie Redfern JR, Elizabeth Prillaman SR, Melissa Zerwic SR, Emily Galante SR, Madeline Nolan SO.

Preview – It will be interesting to see what direction this team goes this fall. They do lose three experienced runners from their 10th place sectional team. The Titans do return all-state runner Kate Jortberg who is ready for a banner senior season. She finished 22nd last November and had a good summer of training in Illinois and Colorado. Molly Durrow, their third runner in the sectionals should lead the pack.

“This was the first summer running program where I had over 50 girls attend, which is outstanding,” said Coach Meaghan Fastert. “Typically, we have had around 20-30 girls total, but the girls have really started to understand how important it is to train in the preseason versus the first day of practice.  I am hoping that they high attendance numbers will lead to stronger runners and fewer injuries throughout the season.”

Lake Zurich

2018 Finish – 15th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Randal Dunbar

Runners to Watch – Kristin Loftus SO, Ruby Lueras JR, Hayley Burk JR, Caroline Sun JR, Sarah Richards SO, Valerie Multra SR, Elizabeth Hume SR, Lindsay Schwab SO, Gretchen Quinn SR, Ginger Mirabelli JR, Hannah Laubach FR, Brooke Johnston FR

Preview – The Bears have the talent to climb into the top 10 of their sectional after finishing 15th last year at Busse Woods. With last year’s top runner Emily Burns graduated, Kristin Loftus and Hayley Burk could step into the #1 position. Five runners are back from that sectional team that will need a top five split under 70 seconds. “Our summer training was great,” Coach Randal Dunbar said. “We have girls that committed and bought into our philosophy in the second year. We have a very committed team and captains that lead very well.”

Lincolnshire (Stevenson)

2018 Finish – 11th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Maureen Connolly

Runners to Watch – Michelle Yu SR, Caimin XI SR, Helena Ebeling JR, Emma Finnegan JR, Emily Fejas JR, Alvia Alton SO, Jenna McCulough JR, Shreevarsha Shreekumar SR, Kendall Goldenson JR, Natalie Dugeesescu SO.

Preview – The Patriots lost their top two runners from last year due to graduation. They returning their remaining five on the team that finished 11th at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Michelle Yu and Caimin Xi will interchangeable in the front leading this team. Moving their pack closer to their top two runners and getting Yu and Xi 15 seconds closer to the front in races puts the team in contention in the North Suburban Conference as well as a top five finish in their sectional.

Mundelein

2018 Finish – 14th 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional

Coach – Carsyn Rodriguez

Runners to Watch – Jordyn Miller SO, Claire Schoenfeld SR, Jeanelle Jimenez SR, Jocelyn Gomez SO, Emily Bauman SR, Hope Peterson JR, Sucely Marcos JR, Alyssa Cruz JR, Abigail Ford SO, Anna Ambrose JR.

Preview – Mundelein returns five of their top seven runners in hopes of improving on last year’s 14th place sectional finish. Jordyn Miller was the top runner for the Mustangs as a freshman and again should step into that role with chances of qualifying for the state meet individually. The team had top five splits under 80 seconds at times in races in 2018. That split needs to drop near 70 seconds if the team wants to contend in the North Suburban Conference and challenge for a top 10 sectional place.

New Lenox (Lincoln-Way Central)

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Quincy Sectional

Coach – Jack Young

Runners to Watch – Merrigan Allen JR (201, 19:25), Rachel Baumgartner SR, Audrey Bulow SR, Colleen Erdman JR, Lexy Sams SR, Madison Coglianese JR, Catherine Ihrke JR.

Preview Merrigan Allen was the team’s top runner qualifying for the state meet. She did not have her best race in Peoria but is capable of finishing in the top 50 this fall. The Knights return four of their top five runners from last year’s sectional team that could qualify as a team for the state meet. The key will be getting the pack, led by Rachel Baumgartner, closer to Allen by 50 seconds or less. Their top five split is under 100 seconds to start the season. The numbers would need to drop by 30 seconds on five to get into one of those magical top five sectional spots.

New Lenox (Lincoln-Way West)

2018 Finish – 10th 3A Quincy Sectional

Coach – Matt Bowden

Runners to Watch – Hailey Novak SO, Taylor Novak SO, Kady Winas SO, Elise Champlin SR, Vanessa Evans SO, Gianna Arrizi FR, Emma Fox SR, Sophia Bach SO.

Preview – This could be a rebuilding year for the Warriors. They will miss their projected #1 runner Lauryn Grothe who moved out of state. Four runners are back led by sophomore sisters Hailey and Taylor Novak. Elise Champlain had a good summer of training and could move up to the front.

“It's possible that 5-6 of our top 7 will be FR/SO runners, so much of our focus will be on growth and development,” said Matt Bowden. “Top to bottom, including a great group of seniors, our goal is helping kids learn to love running, to love competing.  We look forward to battling LW-Central at conference and going toe-to-toe with the fantastic teams at the downstate sectional.”

Orland Park (Sandburg)

2018 Finish – 9th 3A Marist Sectional

Coach – Tony Pena

Runners to Watch – Ella Jeffries JR (188, 19:08), Brielle Morris JR, Paige Killen JR, Shelby Fuller JR, Tina Siebenaler SR, Grace Wille SR, Jordan Austin SO, Kamila Castillo SO, Raegan Hwaniec FR.

Preview – The Eagles has a talented group coming back with six of their top seven. Sandburg finished ninth at the Marist Sectional and could jump into a wide-open race for the fifth spot this November in Hinsdale. Ella Jeffries leads the team. She was an individual state qualifier last year. They will need to work on their top five split which could be as much as 90 seconds.

“If we continue doing things the right way the results will follow, and we are close,” Tony Pena said. “I know our athletes are expecting to see continued improvement in their individual performances and the team's performance. We will see where that takes us in the fall. We return our top 5 runners and 9 of our top 10. We will need improvement at all levels in order to challenge the top teams in our conference and sectional. Can we get it done this year or are we a year away? We'll find out soon enough.”

Park Ridge (Maine South)

2018 Finish – 9th 3A Niles West Sectional

Coach – Jeff Dowling

Runners to Watch – Maria Marcucci SO, Kaylin Fahy SO, Payton Tauber JR, Shannon Winkler JR, Tara Murphy JR, Samantha Olson SO, Kaitlyn Suarez SO, Danielle Ammentorp JR.

Preview – The name of the game for the Hawks is getting their pack closer to the front this fall. They return four runners from their ninth-place sectional team. Maria Marcucci was the team’s third runner last year and will be poised to step to the top spot.

“We came off a season where we finished in 9th at the Niles West sectional and pretty far back from the top 5 qualifiers,” Jeff Dowling said. “Even though we are still young and inexperienced, we are hoping for a stronger season with our returning runners.  We return Maria Marcucci, Payton Tauber, and Kaylin Fahy, and Shannon Winkler from our top 7 from last year, and expect Tara Murphy and Courtney Lee will help us from the track program.  As always, we will try to compete against the likes of New Trier, Vernon Hills, and Evanston in the CSL Conference, and will work hard to get back as a team to the state meet.”

Schaumburg

2018 Finish – 7th 3A Hoffman Estates Regional

Coach – Kristen Zillmer

Runners to Watch – Ashee Jenks JR, Katie Smith SR, Victoria Tueni SR, Erin Repple SO, Isdora Hernandez SR, Lexus Groszka SO, Anne Marie Norske JR, Kaitlyn Minniear FR, Nina Akimoto FR, Mary Pfaff FR.

Preview – Even though the Saxons only has three runners back from their seventh-place regional team, there is young talent in Schaumburg that could secure a spot in their sectional. Ashlee Jenks and Katie Smith were two of the three runners that ran in last year’s sectional. They should be the leaders of this team. “This season we want to place in the top half of the MSL conference and qualify for sectionals as a team,” Coach Kristin Zillmer said. “We also would love to have individual state qualifiers or even advance it as a team.”
