2020 Illinois High School Cross Country Team Previews - Class 3A Girls
Defending champion Naperville North and Yorkville lead the way in Class 3A Girls
By Michael Newman
The cancellation of the Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) in July cancelled the annual trip that Naperville North takes. It is almost a given that this program is on the starting line in Portland.
This year, it will not happen for the Huskies.
This December would have been fun to watch them race. They return everyone back from last year’s team and will be one of the five squads in the country. However, we get to see them race in Illinois.
Yorkville would have been making that trip as well. Their depth almost matches that of Naperville North. The Lady Foxes missed the trip last year finishing third in the NXR Midwest Regional, the qualifying meet for NXN.
If we do not have a state meet this season, the two teams will not meet as of now. It is the year of the dual meet. The year of staying within their zone. Both teams have a zone, but it is a zone it seems light years ahead of anyone else in the state.
Naperville North and Yorkville are ahead of the field in Class 3A. There are no faces in the crowd looking to challenge like Oswego and Prospect. Batavia could also make that next step up.
The main thing is that these kids get to run with their friends and race. That is what this sport is all about. It might not be invitational meets. It might be just dual meets and that is okay with me.
In February, when things changed with the formatting of sectionals in the state series, I made the decision to increase the weekly rankings that I do from 25 to 30 teams to reflect the change with the IHSA. At this time, I have yet to determine if we will do weekly rankings due to the fact that it is mathematically tough to compare teams on just dual meets (That might change).
The previews that have been written are focused on IF we have a state series and IF we have a state meet. As of this time, that is yet to be determined.
There was never the chance that these would not be written for the upcoming season. It is more of a tribute to the student/athletes that did not get a chance to compete this spring and now have that opportunity this fall. This preview is for all of you.
Class 3A Girls Teams
1 Naperville North
Coach – Dan Iverson
2019 Finish – Class 3A State Champions
Runners to Watch – Maggie Gamboa SR (5, 16:44), Audrey Mendrys SR (8, 17:03), Lucy Westlake JR (29, 17:24), Katie Donaldson SR (36, 17:39), Molly Morton SR (44, 17:44), Sophie Golobitsch JR (69, 18:03), Campbell Petersen SR (101, 18:21), Marissa Magana SO, Safiya Bhanpuri JR, Madeline Cody SR, Norah Hess JR, Samantha Falkman SO, Josie Bond SR, Ellie Coderre JR, Peyton Milligan SO, Grace Kilgore SR, Julie Piot FR, Jenna Lupo FR.
Preview – The one thing that we will not get to see this fall is Naperville North make their annual trip to Portland. The Huskies were annual visitors to the Nike Cross Nationals and have brought some hardware back from that meet. This would have been one of those years. This team will be one of the top squads in the nation. At the same time if we have a state meet, Naperville North will be going after their fourth straight Class 3A State championship. You can count the programs in the state on one hand that have accomplished that. In uncertain times, it is business as usual for this team.
“We continued with track workouts until we knew there would be no formal track season,” their coach Dan Iverson said. “At that point, we found new distance challenges for the kids, so that they could train for (a) track, (b) XC-style training or (c) a half-marathon. They could choose from a menu of workouts. We had team meetings throughout the week to keep in contact with everyone via Zoom.”
The idea of getting through the spring is typical of why this team is so deep and why this program is successful. The Huskies enter this season returning their entire top seven that ran in the state meet as well as the Nike Cross Nationals. They do have seven other runners waiting in the wings that could be the #1 runner in most of the other teams in the state. The design of the program just does not concentrate on the top seven. It is a team. Everyone fights for the top seven. There is no concept of a junior varsity squad.
“We have been working out together since June,” Iverson added. “We were uneven with our fitness level at first, but it was clear most of the girls did their work during the quarantine. There really has not been one individual who has been surprising. We have looked good throughout.”
This team is senior oriented. Five of the top seven from last year’s state team are all seniors. Maggie Gamboa leads the way for this 2020 team. She took a step forward last fall developing into one of the top runners in the state as she finished fifth in Peoria. Audry Mendrys had a great run at state and finished seventh. Gamboa and Mendrys perhaps the top duo in the state for female runners.
I am excited to watch Campbell Petersen race this fall. She went through so many things for most of last fall with injuries and illnesses. She was the team’s seventh runner at state and third runner at NXN. Before the track season was stopped, you could see it in her eyes that she was a runner on a mission putting up some fast times. Lucy Westlake has joined her three teammates and could finish in the top 15 in her junior season. Molly Morton, Katie Donaldson, and Sophie Golobitsch were runners last year that would run as high as the team’s #3 runner. It is just a description of how deep in talent this team is.
The way this team races does not change as they get out under control and then move the second half of the race. The way that they treat this un-normal of normal seasons will not change either. “Our message has been to control what we can control, and much of this is out of our control,” added Iverson. “So I have urged them to not have an opinion on whatever happens. We will make the best of whatever the season gives us. All we can do is be in good shape and then run as hard as we can in every meet. We will treat every day, every practice, every rep and certainly every race as a gift. If we get a full season, great. If we do not, we will make the best of every moment we have. We truly could be an exceptionally good team. So we will so the best we can with whatever we have.”
2 Yorkville
Coach – Chris Muth
2019 Finish – 2nd, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Helena Kleronomos SR (17, 17:10), Hailey Simmons SR (41, 17:42), Sara Klemm SR (48, 17:50), Margaret Hunter JR (50, 17:52), Katie Melzer SO (64, 18:01), Makenna Edwards SO (66, 18:01), Alex Stewart SO, Laura Taylor SR, Anna Hunter JR, Lucy Anderson SO, Emma Jastis SO, Renee Niles JR.
Preview – One of the lasting memories I will have of the 2019 cross-country season was the way that Yorkville ran in the state meet. It was a year where injuries ruled the first half of the season. Where some were writing this team off, the Lady Foxes found a way to fight through the adversity that came upon them. It resulted in a second-place finish in the Class 3A State Meet. They finished third the following week at the NXR Midwest Regional Meet but were not chosen to go to Portland as an at-large team. It would been nice to see them run in Portland at NXN. They would have made some noise.
Let us not look at what could have been. Yorkville will face adversity again as well all teams in the state. It is a position they have been in before. “We took the approach this spring season that as soon as schools shut down in March we took our break instead of training through Track,” Coach Chris Muth said. “Meaning we were able to tack on an additional 6/7 weeks of training for this upcoming cross country season. They were not allowed to train together for the first eight weeks of training but kept running logs and dialog with coaches and teammates throughout. Once we reached phase three we were able to meet in groups of nine without coaches, which helped with accountability and comradery, and finally we were able to finish with our Endurance Camp for two weeks of 45 kids or less in a group.”
This team is deep in talent just like Naperville North. Yorkville should have nine runners trying to position themselves into one of the top seven spots. When injuries hit this team early last year, Helena Kleronomos stepped up to the #1 spot that she did not relinquish during the season. She finished 17 at state last year. She should be in the top 10 this fall. Haley Simmons missed the first half of the season due to an injury. She fought finishing 41 at Detweiller Park. She is another runner that we could see in the state top 25. Alex Stewart did not run in the state meet last year but was the team’s fifth runner at NXR Midwest. She was the team’s second runner for a god portion of last season. Muth believes she will be one of top three runners on this year’s team.
Sara Klemm leads a strong pack behind the top three. Klemm finished 48 at state and should better it this fall. There are five runners that will fight for the remaining three top seven positions including Mackenna Edwards, Katie Melzer, Margaret Hunter, Lucy Anderson, and Anna Hunter. Any of these runners could be in the team’s top four.
Muth had decided to break the nine runners up in training. He still intends to do that. “Currently I’m about nine girls deep that could make an impact on the varsity team this season,” added Muth. “We are planning on breaking up the team into three different groups just for the fact that if and when there is a COVID-19 case, not all would be potentially exposed and or shut down for a period of time.”
This team does have the talent to win a state title. It will be their pack that will need to have all of their runners in the top 50 to claim the top prize. “Our message is simple,” Muth concluded. “Control the controllable and be prepared when your opportunity presents itself.”
This team has done that in the past. The probability that they overcome obstacles in 2020 is good.
3 Mt. Prospect-Prospect
Coach – Peter Wintermute
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Audrey Ginsberg JR (21, 17:14), Cameron Kalaway SO (38, 17:40), Annika Erickson SR (79, 18:09), Hailey Erickson SO (127, 18:39), Paige Runkle SR (147, 18:50), Reese Lettow SR (176, 19:10), Shannon Walsh SO, Taylor DeCook JR, Elena Barbauic SR, Samantha Patterson SO, Kait Suarez JR, Sophia Anast SO, Lily Ginsberg FR, Kaitlyn Skelton FR, Bridget Derengowski FR, Fiona Chojdecki FR.
Preview – There are about 10 teams in Class 3A that have the talent to finish in the top three in 2020. Here is the first one. The Lady Knights have an abundance of talent entering this season. They finished eighth at state last November returning six runners from that team. They have four freshmen that could step into the top seven. They have five other athletes that are coming out from other sports that will be waiting in the wings.
“The Spring/Winter Track season had a surprise ending as many athletes were cranking it up and getting ready for the last 2-3 weeks of indoors and heading into outdoors,” their coach Pete Wintermute said. “During this period of unknown many of our athletes continued to train together hoping we would be able to get back on the track for the Outdoor season. Unfortunately, that did not happen. My approach after the cancellation of the Track & Field season was to keep them active and engaged as running/working out is therapeutic, relaxing, and enjoyable. A stress reliever. During the spring as we were first being hit with this pandemic that is what we all needed, AN OUTLET. Running is many of our outlets, so I kept in touch with our athletes via weekly Zoom meetings and by providing weekly training plans. I kept it light with a focus on enjoying the sport, the scenery, and the fresh air.”
The one runner that could take the next step up is Audrey Ginsberg. The junior surprised some last fall finishing 21st at state. It would not surprise me if she is among the top 10 Class 3A runners state-wide. Cameron Kalaway was the team’s #1 runner in their regional and sectional races. Keeping her within 10 seconds of Ginsberg will be a key. Annika Erickson, Paige Runkle, Hailey Erickson, Reese Lettow, and Shannon Walsh were in the top five at some point last fall. You can also add in a strong freshman group led by Lily Ginsberg and Kaitlyn Skelton that could stamp their names into the top five. The dual meets that these teams will be in could be exciting as these runners challenge each other for one of those spots.
“We are going to have fun and enjoy each day together,” said Wintermute. “We cannot worry about what tomorrow brings so we will work to enjoy each day and live in the moment.”
The moment could be a spot in the top three at the endo of the year. They will be the favorite in the Mid Suburban League. A key will be finding consistency in their pack running. Their top five split in their sectional race was only 27 seconds. It was 80 seconds at state with their second through fifth split at 54 seconds in that race. Keeping their top five split under 50 seconds will be something to watch for. Finding that consistent low split could have them bringing home a trophy from Peoria.
4 Oswego
Coach – Eric Simon
2019 Finish – 11th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Rebecca Corbett JR (37, 17:39), Audra Soderlind SO (39, 17:40), Payton Brueck SR (85, 18:12), Ella Hale SR (92, 18:17), Paige Bohnert JR (149, 18:53), Sophia Marasco SO, Kaylee Symborski JR, Madison Chriske SO, Amanda Farrow SO, Macy Luchyn SO, Hannah Pirami JR, Kaitlyn Pienta FR, Kate Soderlind FR.
Preview – It has been a consistent message that this Oswego team has heard from their coach Eric Simon ever since the track season was cancelled due to COVID-19 in mid-March.
“My message since track has been simple,” said Simon. “We are going to stick together and work together as a group to become better athletes no matter the situation we are given. I would remind them that improving as a distance runner comes from consistent training over long periods of time without big breaks in training. And this is possible with or without competitions.”
This team has showed improvement during the end of last season into the time out period. The Panthers finished 11th at state but do return six runners from that team. Rebecca Corbett and Audra Soderlind traded off the #1 position towards the end of last season and should push each other for that spot this fall. The two runners were separated by just one second at Detweiller Park. Both runners are capable of finishing in the top 25 at state.
Ella Hale and Peyton Brueck give Oswego a solid pack in the top five. The top five split at state last year was 74 seconds. It was 53 seconds in their conference race. Freshmen Kate Soderlind and Kaitlyn Pienta, junior Hannah Pirami, along with Paige Bohnert and Sophia Marasco give this team depth in talent. The competitiveness of this group will make this team that much tougher.
“Our team is pretty fit right now with the work we have done. I have about 8 or 10 that are pretty locked in,” Simon added. “We have a small team this year, summer camp is at 21. Audra Soderlind is ready to go, she is focused and reminds me a bit of Isabellle Christiansen. Ella Hale, Peyton Brueck and Sophia Marasco have also had great summers. Brueck ran 11:48 in February and has continued making progress. Becca Corbett has had a good summer but continues to fight aches and pains from growth spurts. Time trial feedback has been good with this group.”
The Southwest Prairie Conference Meets should be great with teams like Minooka, Yorkville, and Oswego facing off against each other. Do not count out this Oswego team this fall. They are not sneaky good. They are just that good.
5 Batavia
Coach – Chad Hillman
2019 Finish – 4th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Katrina Schlenker JR (3, 16:40), Jenna Schifferer SR (52, 17:54), Liliana Bednarek SO (88, 18:15), Ava Thomas SO (111, 18:26), Brooke Silbernagel SO, Annie Sellenberg SR, Meara Sauter SO, Olivia Parmalee SO, Maya Malay JR, Brooke Nazos JR, Alexis Wasmund JR.
Preview – Batavia will look to take the next step up as we begin this cross-country season. The Bulldogs finished fourth at last season’s state meet and do have a good nucleus coming back including one of the top runners in Class 3A Katrina Schlenker.
“When we began camp the girls had obviously done the work to prepare for the season,” Coach Chad Hillman said. “Several girls look strong. Lilly Bednarek has looked particularly strong and has had a great summer. Lauren Hunecke and Annie Sellenberg have also looked great. Overall, we are impressed with the summer and the preparation the girls have done, alone at the beginning of the summer, and together at the end of the summer.”
Four runners are back that have state meet experience. Schlenker was hampered by an injury that slowed her down the first half of the season. She came on strong in the second half in which she finished third at state. Jenna Schifferer went through stage one of breakthrough years last fall when she was the team’s third runner. She should take that next step up this season. Bednarek and Ava Thomas are a pair of strong sophomores that could close the gap on Schifferer. Sellenberg, Hueneke, and Brooke Silbernagel also have the talent to step into the team’s top five.
“Our message has been similar to past seasons,” said Hillman. “We want to be the best we can be, no matter what format the season has, take advantage of the opportunities that we do have, and control what we can control. We talk a lot about showing up every day trying to get better.”
6 Lockport Township
Coach – Regan Cronholm
2019 Finish – 10th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Josephine Bober SR (34, 17:35), Kayla Shea SO (59, 17:58), Monica Skibicki SO (83, 18:11), Caroline Turner SO (130, 18:42), Hannah Miller SO (181, 19:13), Samantha Weisner JR, Megan Mitchell SR, Kailyn Mitchell JR, Kaira Stricklin JR, Elizabeth Bollinger SR.
Preview – A team that is ready for another breakthrough fall. The Lady Porters finished 10th in last year’s state meet. There is good talent back for Coach Regan Cronholm. Five of her top seven, 9 of her top 14 runners all return.
“There hasn’t been one single individual that has surprised me, it really has been the entire team,” said Cronholm. “As coaches (myself and assistant coaches Courtney Krieger and Ada Ramirez), we weren’t able to see our runners for a lot of the summer. The seniors of the group organized groups of 10 or less for different times to start workouts (to be socially distant) and created a calendar of workouts/runs. Since the seniors did this, their fitness level was incredible at the start of camp in July. I did not have to modify workouts too much for anyone, which is usually something I have to do.”
Lockport will be tough up front with Josephine Bober leading the way. The senior had a good state meet placing 34th. She could be among the top 25 runners in Class 3A this fall. Kayla Shea, Monica Skibicki, and Caroline Turner, all sophomores, will push again for top five spots. The Lady Porters had three freshmen in their top five last season. It just means this team could get that much better. This team depends on good pack running. That did not happen last fall with the top five split being at 67 seconds. This team is one year older and better. We will see how good they are when they lace their spikes up in the next few weeks.
“We have been focusing on mental toughness and not taking any days for granted,” added Cronholm. “We really don’t know what each day or week will bring us in terms of the pandemic/social distancing/overall health. I think this is especially important now with so many unknowns. The girls have just been taking it one day at a time and are really focusing on what needs to be done right now.”
7 Oak Park-River Forest
Coach – Ashley Raymond
2019 Finish – 13th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Nora Wollen SR (15, 17:07), Josephine Welin JR (16, 17:09), Parker Hulen SR (81, 18:09), Maggie Rose Baron SR (146, 18:49), Avery Minnis SO (162, 18:59), Rylee Danley SO, Abigail Lofgren SO, Annie Stine SO, Elise Chranko SO, Natalie Quinn SO, Leora Kurtz SO, Grace Anzaldi SR, Lenny Sterritt FR.
Preview – The Lady Huskies start the season as one of the teams to beat in the tough West Suburban Conference Silver Division. Five of their top seven runners are back from the team that finished 13th in last year’s state meet. They should better last year’s finish. The question is how much more this team will improve?
“I am really proud of how our squad was able to stay connected and put in quality work during the spring,” said their coach Ashley Raymond. “We had weekly zoom meetings to go over the training, ask questions and just say hi. I also created a Strava group for the team. This gave the team a sense of community where they could comment and give kudos to each other for their runs. It also allowed me to give feedback and a super easy way to see how everyone is doing.”
What we saw from Josephine Welin at the Meet of Champions in Chicago this past July could give us an indication of what this team could bring to the course this fall. The junior improved her personal best by almost 30 seconds for 3200-meters running 10:25. She will be one of the elite runners in the state. Her teammate Nora Wollen finished two seconds ahead of Welin at state. It will be interesting to see the two race together this coming season.
“The team did a great job of training through the spring and the early part of the summer, we looked fit and fresh this summer,” Raymond stated. “We have 6 out of our 7 top runners from last year returning and a pack of sophomores itching to make the top 7.”
Parker Hulen will lead the pack behind Welin and Wollen. It will be a battle for remaining top seven spots with senior Maggie Rose Baron and a group of sophomores led by Avery Minnis, Rylee Danley, and Abigail Lofgren itching to get into that lineup. “There are going to be unknowns in our racing schedule, and we have accepted that. We are focused on the process of being a better runner and person. We are dedicated to improvement and lifting up our teammates. If we do that, we will be ready to race,” Raymond said. “Now that we have races on the schedule, we need to accept it will be different. The message will be to accept those differences, be grateful, and take advantage of every opportunity.”
The Lady Huskies will have the low numbers in the first two positions. That is a given. The key will be getting that pack within 50 seconds of the front two. A pack of 35 seconds or closer in the next three spots could put this squad among the top five teams in Class 3A.
8 Minooka
Coach – Kevin Gummerson
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Gabrielle McCollum SO (76, 18:07), Gabby Kies SO (102, 18:22), Mary Rushing SR (117, 18:32), Kathryn Cichon JR (118, 18:33), Kendra Martin SO (121, 18:36), Jocelyn Host JR, Sophia Miller SO, Brooke Wlodek JR, Sara McLaughlin JR, Bella Encinas SR.
Preview – Minooka was one of those teams that adjusted to the circumstances early in the timeout period. “This track season, there was obviously a tremendous amount of uncertainty,” coach Kevin Gummerson said. “We kept the same type of training that we would have done for meets throughout the track season. However, I had to make some adjustments as they did not have access to our track. I was able to communicate with the team through our google classroom and our google meets. They reported back to me on how the workouts were going and gave me feedback. I was impressed that so many kids took advantage of this time to improve as distance runners.”
The Indians are part of the tough Southwest Prairie Conference and will be fighting for that top spot in that conference. This team also has the talent with five of their top seven back from the squad that finished ninth at the state meet. Their big loss will be they will be without their top runner Audrey Boles. She will not run due to an injury that will require surgery.
“The girls started the summer with a few weeks of running under their belt,” Gummerson said. “We took a little break earlier in May than we normally do, and that allowed them to start up the summer training a few weeks earlier. I feel like we have done our summer homework and some of my concerns about a lack of or a weak summer program are gone. Back in May, I was not sure that we would be able to meet as a team. While the summer program looked different. We were able to use the time we were given to improve.”
This team is again deep and will have step up to the spot that Bolles had. A pair of sophomores, Gabrielle McCollum and Gabby Kics, will look to push for that spot. Mary Rushing, Kathryn Cichon, and Kendra Martin give the team a solid top five. Gummerson added that they will have another strong freshman group that will have an impact on this team. This will be more a part of pack running. More so, it will be the opportunity to race with each other again.
“These girls have not raced since early March, and I know they are getting ready to compete,” Gummerson stated. “If there is ever a time when the importance of high school athletics is at the highest, it is right now. We want them to get excited about working with their teammates (in-person and not virtually), doing something meaningful every day, and being grateful that you get the opportunity to train and run a race instead of doing a puzzle under a stay at home order. While we will not get the chance to run in these huge 50 team invites or under the lights in Naperville, we will have a chance to compete in the purest setting. I cannot wait to see these girls toe the starting line. I know this is something that they have worked hard for and I know they miss it.”
9 Downers Grove South
Coach – Doug Plunkett
2019 Finish – 5th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Alex Sprang JR (53, 17:55), Kelsey Casella JR (89, 18:16), Sophia McNerney JR (126, 18:39), Rebecca Diddia SR (191, 19:22), Renee Kowalski JR, Madi Sisson JR, Dana Rodden SO, Sara Homberg JR, Nora Joy SO, Madelyn Sumlin SO, Ria Patel SR, Anjali Kota SO.
Preview – It could be a rebuilding or reloading season for the Mustangs after finishing fifth at last year’s state meet. They do lose all-state runners Brenna Cohoon and Erin Reidy along with the senior leadership of Kennedy Warden. “If there has been one benefit from the whole virus mess for us, it's been the cultivating of leaders all throughout our team,” said Coach Doug Plunkett. “Over the summer, we have had 8-9 different small groups, each with 2 group leaders made up of sophomores, juniors, and seniors. They have all done an outstanding job of leading our team in ways we have never had to before. And I believe that this experience will benefit the team not only this season, but in the years to come.”
Four runners are back from that state team led by three juniors. Sophia McNerney took a big step during the summer in her training. It was evident when she improved her personal best by running 11:07 for 3200-meters. Alex Sprang and Kelsey Casella ended the season as the team’s third and fourth runners giving this team three strong front runners. Rebecca Diddia experienced a season of injuries last fall. Do not be surprised if she is not with that front group as well as the season begins. Renee Kowalski leads a group of five runners that will battle for the fifth spot.
“We cannot control the circumstances around us, but we can control how we respond to those circumstances,” Plunkett added Our motto this summer has been, "Courage to start, Strength to endure, Resolve to finish."
10 Elmhurst York
Coach – Lauren Deangelis
2019 Finish – 18th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Brooke Berger SO (67, 18:02), Katelyn Winton JR (96, 18:19), Brianna Bennis SO (107, 18:23), Bella Swanson JR (108, 18:24), Kathleen Buhrfiend JR (125, 18:39), Maureen Buhrfiend (152, 18:54), Katelyn Leonard JR, Charlotte Reedy JR, Shannon Farrow JR, Allison Fitzgibbons JR.
Preview – Pack running again will benefit the Dukes as they head into the 2020 season. Six runners are back from the state team that finished 18th. 22 of the 53 runners that were in their camp were freshmen. They have transfers coming in that could jump into the top seven. The future looks bright for York.
“Our team was only able to meet in person for 4 days this summer (the best 4 days of my summer),” said their coach Lauren Deangelis. “However, this team has been working since the beginning of June and their hard work, dedication and accountability to the team is showing in their workouts. This team is fit and has a strong aerobic base. Many of the girls have seen major drops in their time trials and we are looking forward to seeing this team in action.”
Brooke Berger stepped up as the team’s top runner last year as a freshman. An iron deficiency problem hampered her running towards the end of the season, but she still finished 67th at the state meet. Getting near the top 25 is possible for Berger this season. The pack behind Berger is what to be watched for. The group, led by Katelyn Winton and Brianna Bennis, were able to stay within 20 seconds of each other in their state race form the second through sixth positions. This team will be deep in talent. We should see the pack within 10 seconds of Berger. With the sophomore being closer to the front and maintain that split will make this team tough.
“Some of the main messages I have talked to the team about is that during these times they need to be self-motivated, self-directed and more importantly they need to hold each other accountable for the success of the team,” Deangelis said. “As a team we must stay positive, enthusiastic and confident - NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS. Last, I have communicated that hard work is a privilege and to keep pursuing our team's mental toughness.”
11 Downers Grove North
Coach – Tim McDonald
2019 Finish – 21st, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Melissa Jachim SR (26, 17:18), Ava Geiger SO (73, 18:04), Madeline Casey SO (164, 19:02), Claire Pyne SO (172, 19:06), Annie Bieda SR (179, 19:12), Rylan Gaspar SR (200, 19:39), Maeve Courtney SO, Caroline Scott JR, Hannah Schultz SR, Katie Cesario SO, Karly Harkness FR, Sydney Hnatiuk FR, Ashley Novak JR.
Preview – This could be a step up year for the Lady Trojans. They return six of their seven runners from the team that finished 21st at state. “We did not have an official camp this summer due to both Covid-19 and construction on campus,” Coach Tim McDonald said. “The girls have been meeting together on their own essentially following the IHSA Return to Play Guidelines on group sizes. I do not know if anyone has surprised me, but I do think two of my sophomores are poised to break through this season. Ava Geiger and Claire Pyne have been dedicated and focused since March. I am excited to see their improvement once the races begin. The fitness level for the team will be a mixed bag. My top group is ready to go, but some others may need some time to round into shape. Not having that day in and day out coach present this summer led to some inconsistency in training for the middle tier runner.”
Melissa Jachim just missed an all-state spot by one place. She could be among the top 20 runners in Class 3A this fall. Geiger and Pyne were part of their top five and could get within 35 seconds of Jachim. Madeline Casey is another sophomore that could push for that seconds position. The split from their second through fifth runners at state last year was 64 seconds with a 116 second split in their top five runners. Those numbers will need to improve for this team to move up.
“I think the message will be simple,” McDonald said. “We have been given the opportunity to compete again. Have fun running together again, focus on continued improvement, and make every dual meet count. If we have a conference championship meet, even better.”
12 Glen Ellyn Glenbard West
Coach – Paul Hass
2019 Finish – 6th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Audrey Allman JR (18, 17:12), Delaney Engel JR (43, 17:44), Anna Nickoley JR (109, 18:24), Paige King SO (138, 18:47), Olivia Kline SR (199, 19:36), Zoe Umlauf SR, Hannah Moffatt SO, Maya Umlauf SR, Carlin Hass SO, Anna Rojas JR, Kaylee Lange SO, Dorothy Billings SO, Lily Halden JR.
Preview – This will be a different year for the Glenbard West Girls team. It is year one AH – after Katelynne Hart. The former Glenbard West runner, now at the University of Michigan, had a big impact on this program. Her work ethic will rub off on future Lady Hilltoppers.
“What is different is that we have, for us, a sizable freshman and sophomore class of athletes that make up nearly 2/3 of the squad,” Coach Paul Hass said. “Upperclassmen are outnumbered so
their leadership is definitely prioritized. Katelynne Hart and the rest of the seniors who graduated
will definitely be missed, but they each contributed to our team legacy of hard work and commitment to performing both the big and little things well. We have seen an elevated dedication level amongst team members at camp this year, including the incoming freshman class. KK was certainly the “poster athlete” of our program, and she exemplified the positive outcomes that stem from an indefatigable work ethic. This summer we saw this type of effort every day at camp: runners doing their best to improve.”
Five runners could be back from the West team that finished sixth last year at the state meet. Audrey Allman earned all-state runners last year and could be among the top 10 runners in Class 3A. The big question mark for this team starting camp was Delaney Engel. The junior told Hass at the beginning of summer that she might not run and focus her energies on club soccer. All of that was for not. She decided to run again this fall which will be good news for this team. Engel could be in the top 25 if we get to a state meet.
This will be a year of growth for Glenbard West with only one senior projected to be in the top seven. Keep an eye on Anna Nickoley who could jump into the third spot of the top seven. Sophomores Carlin Hass, Hannah Moffatt, and Kaylee Lange put in the most mileage during their summer camp and could be difference makers in the team’s top five.
“At this point we are simply thankful to have a season,” Hass said. “Our emphasis has been on
maintaining that possibility by emphasizing safety in terms of reminders about social distancing, wearing a mask whenever not running, and making safe decisions when not at camp/practice. As always, our emphasis continues to be focused upon working hard, working as a team, and asking each individual to consistently put forth their best effort on and off the course to improve.”
13 Arlington Heights Hersey
Coach – Danielle Freeman
2019 Finish – 20th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Anna Harden SO (23, 17:17), Jane Stefanik SR (91, 18:17), Mackenzie Ginder SO (150, 18:53), Emma Van Mereren SO (171, 19:05), Gabi Makowski SO, Katie O’Brien SR, Renee Skieva SO, Nora Viers JR, Jenna Sanders SO, Sophianne Loh SR.
Preview – Hersey is a good bet to return to the state meet if we get that far. Four runners are back form their state team that finished 20th last November at Detweiller Park. Anna Harden had a great freshman season which culminated with a 23 place finish at state. She could be one of the top sophomores in the state this fall. Jane Stefanik was 60 seconds behind Harden at state but 79 seconds in their sectional race. Watch for Stefanik to get within 40 seconds of her teammate.
Two more sophomores, Mackenzie Ginder and Emma Van Mereren, could step u their game in the second year of high school cross country. Gabi Makowski, who ran in the sectional race, could step into the team’s top five.
14 LaGrange Lyons Township
Coach – Alex Lyons
2019 Finish – 17th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Kate Dickman SR (54, 17:55), Claire Williams SR (106, 18:23), Catherine Sommerfeld SO (124, 18:39), Charlotte Lange SO (135, 18:45), Madeline Ryan SR, Kate Ferrell SR, Sophia Thomas JR, Maia Rudofski SO Madison Ohm SR, Maureen Patrick JR.
Preview – The first day of practice for Lyons Township was scheduled for August 17. That would mark the first time that the team would get back together. “We've had no in-person summer camp, and have not seen the athletes since March, but the team collectively has been training well and looks to be in a good place,” their coach Alex Lyons said. “We stayed connected to the team via Zoom. It's certainly not the same as in-person practice, but it was better than nothing.”
The Lions return four of their top five runners from the squad that finished 17 in last year’s state meet. Kate Dickman did not have her best race at state but does come back for her senior season looking to rebound. Claire Williams, Catherine Sommerfeld, and Charlotte Lange form a strong nucleus behind Dickman that will pay dividends at the end of the season. Madeline Ryan leads a group of 8 to 10 runners that will challenge for the fifth spot. The pack behind Dickman is projected to have a 20 second split on their second through fifth runners. They key is that pack staying within 30 seconds of Dickman.
“This team has a more important job than any prior group, and that's shepherding our program through all the uncertainty surrounding athletics and COVID-19,” Coach Lyons said. “The current team will determine what our program looks like on the other side of all this. That is a lot to ask of young people, but I think the kids we have right now are equipped for it. How they handle this year will affect the trajectory of our team for a long time.”
15 Lake Zurich
Coach – Jeremy Kauffman
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Brooke Johnston SO (13, 17:06), Kristin Loftus JR, Ruby Lueras SR, Sarah Richards JR, Zoya Hasan JR, Ginger Mirabelli SR, Kate Thompson JR, Louisa Hagen SO, Charly Mendygral JR.
Preview – Jeremy Kauffman steps in as the new Girls Cross Country Coach at Lake Zurich. He is also the Distance Coach for the Girls Track team. He inherits some talented runners as all seven runners from last year’s sectional team that finished eighth at Hoffman Estates are back. Their one loss is their #2 runner Hannah Laubach who transferred out of state to Ravenswood TN. Kauffman said she was in excellent shape as well.
“Our camp was cancelled after two days,” Kauffman said. “We have done all of our training virtually and have created a Shared Google Drive for the Team. We trained very conservatively in my 1st year as my biggest concern was upping big mileage and ensuring correct prehab and rehab with stretching, rolling out, and resistance band strength work. Overall, our team is small, but ALL of our girls have improved from the previous summer. We even have some girls beating their CC PRS from 2019 on their Tempo runs now. Our highest levels of fitness are girls at 35/40 miles per week and we will cap it there. I am proud of all of them so there is not one as they ALL have been committed.”
The top runner coming back is sophomore Brooke Johnston who was all-state placing 13th. She had a great spring of training but had to shut down towards the end of June due to an injury according to Kauffman. She will be brought along slowly. The pack behind her is tough led by Kristin Loftus. A key will be tightening the pack which could have a split near 90 seconds starting out.
“My message has been about "WE don't waste a heartbeat”. Every moment we get to be together is special and every heartbeat on any training run is special as we have shortened season and a season that could be shut down at any moment,” added Kauffman. “This season goes back to why distance runners run. They run for the love of the sport. I cannot think of any season that embodies what running can do for our social emotional well-being. It is not just about times, championships, or personal bests.
16 Wheaton-Warrenville South
Coach – Robert Harvey
2019 Finish – 12th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Samantha Poglitsch SR (2, 16:37), Becca Hauenstein SR (131, 18:43), Miya Duebener JR (190, 19:21), Annie Macabobby JR, Jess Michalowski SR, Kylie James JR, Kira Mothershed SO, Sofia Olvito JR, Emma Cowen SO, Payton Fleming SO, Rachel Nordmark SR.
Preview – This will not be a normal year for all teams in Illinois. In a way, it will not be normal for Wheaton-Warrenville South. This team graduated four runners from last year’s state team that finished 12. It has been where the team loses one or two runners but has someone in on standby. It will be interesting to see how the pieces fall into place for the Lady Tigers this fall.
“We stayed in the track & field mode until mid-May,” said Coach Rob Harvey. “We thought that the development was important. The girls did virtual time trials. We backed off for the last two weeks of May and began a virtual summer running camp on June 1st. We have had some pleasant surprises in our sophomore and junior classes. Our senior class is progressing very nicely.”
If there is one constant for this team over the past three seasons, it has been the leadership of Samantha Poglitsch. The three time all-state cross country runner has been dominant on the course. The University of Illinois verbal commit finished second last year in the state meet. She is the top returning runner in Class 3A. She leads on the course and is humble and helps her teammates. That will be missed after this season for this program. “Sam has a unique ability to connect with everyone on the team,” added Harvey. “The team aspect seems to drive her individual success and motivation.”
Ignore the top five split for this team especially with Poglitsch in front. The key will be the pack behind her led by Becca Hauenstein and Annie Macabobby. Hauenstein missed all of her sophomore season due to an injury. She ran well last fall but is due a breakout fall season of cross-country. Macabobby racing close to Hauenstein will a big plus for this team. Juniors Kylie James and Miya Duebener along with senior Jess Michalowski appear to bring the runners to challenge for the final top five spots. There are at least five more runners that could be within that top seven. The split from their second to fifth runners is projected to be only 28 seconds to start the season.
17 Huntley
Coach – Matt Kaplan
2019 Finish – 19th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Molly Allen SO (46, 17:47) Breanna Burek SO (123, 18:38), Genevieve Collatz JR (141, 18:47), Brittney Burak SO (155, 18:56), Annie Mitchell SR (178, 19:12), Madison Grubbs JR, Delaney Cairns JR, Kate Patel SO, Emma Hornickel SR, Ally Jorgensen JR, Delaney Hale JR, Ava Allison FR.
Preview – The Red Raiders could improve on their 19th place finish at last year’s state meet. Five of their top seven runners are back from that team. “Once we knew in March we'd be kept from meeting as group at the HS we moved to a virtual format and had weekly zoom sessions to check in with everyone and see how the team was doing,” Coach Matt Kaplan said. “The approach in March, April prior to the season being cancelled was to keep going on a plan as if we were still in the track season. We reminded our kids that you wanted to be ready in the event we got the chance to start back up.”
It seems that this team is ready to go for this fall. Their schedule right now is just focused on meets against teams within their conference. That could be a good thing since the Fox Valley Conference again will be tough. The main thing is that they are running again together.
“ Our team was excited to have the opportunity to meet as a team at summer camp,” said Kaplan. “I am going to speak about sophomore twins Breanna and Brittney Burak. Both have been working extremely hard through the lost months of the track season and have come into the summer ready to go. Both girls will be setting the tone for our team this season. Our returning girls team that qualified last year has been doing consistent work together since we set our team summer plan to get ourselves ready for the upcoming season.”
Molly Allen was the team’s top runner last year and will be pushed by the Burak sisters in the front. Genevieve Collatz and Annie Mitchell also return ready to take their spots in the top five. Huntley is one of those teams that will benefit from this season. It could make them even stronger for 2021.
“We all had hoped to have a 2020 season and now I have continued to remind them that if we do things the right way, we will have a better chance to finish the season,” added Kaplan. “I have talked about making the most of each day and keep the excitement I saw from them on the first day back together. This girls team had a great 2019 season and while there was the set back of the spring, we do have 6 of our top 8 girls back for this season. I am excited to have these girls back working together and to build off of last season's success. Knowing this group will be together next year as well, this season is a great chance to make progress together again.”
18 St. Charles East
Coach – Brad Kaplan
2019 Finish – 15th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Ava Abbott SR (74, 18:06), Brooklyn Walker SO (80, 18:09), Gia Klasa JR (145, 18:49), Venezia Munoz SR (177, 19:10), Hannah Kirkpatrick JR (194, 19:27), Laci Olivari JR, Shauna Norgaard JR, Eleanor Clark SO, Claire Van Lue SO, Marley Morgan Sandlund FR, Marley Adelman FR, Mackenzie Loomis FR.
Preview – Six of the top seven runners from last year’s state team that finished 15th last November were scheduled to return. They will miss their top runner Alice Abbott this fall. She suffered an injury and will miss the season according to their coach Brad Kaplan. This team will rely more on a solid pack throughout this season.
“We've had many google meetings and I've talked about being ready for any type of races this year,” Kaplan said. “Now we know that we will be doing mostly duals and tri meets, I said we can focus on training unlike track where athletes were training but in the back of their heads knew it was for a lost season. I told the girls we are bringing back a great team this year and look to be successful in whatever way possible. Last year's motto was "Heck yeah" which was a team battle cry of no fear and just be up for anything. This season we are going with "Act like a Saint but race like a devil.”
This team is deep and will have some new blood among the top seven even with the number of runners that are returning for the Lady Saints. Marley Adelman finished second in last fall’s IESA 3A State Meet. The freshman has been running with the top group which includes Ava Abbott and Brooklyn Walker. Morgan Sandlund and Mackenzie Loomis are two other freshmen that could also contribute to the top seven immediately. Returning runners Gia Klasa, Venezia Munoz, and Hannah Kirkpatrick give this team even more depth in the top seven.
Adelman could be the front runner to lead this team. That is yet to be determined. There is talent here to better last year’s state performance. We could have a better idea by the end of September.
19 St. Charles North
Coach – Shari Hayes
2019 Finish – 12th , Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Rachel Price JR (12, 17:06), Ella Townsend SR, Audrey Sheehy JR, Miles Watts JR, Megan Strong SO, Abby Steele SR, Grace Dorrance SR, Paige Pepera SO, Sophia Gallentine SO, Bella DiCiosta JR., Katherine Erickson FR, Taylor Boyd FR.
Preview – This team is small (14 runners) but will challenge to improve on last year’s 12 place sectional finish. Rachel Price qualified for state last year again and finished 12 earning all-state honors. She is in great shape according to her coach Shari Hayes and should be one of the top 10 Class 3A Girls this fall. Gail Dorrance missed most of last season due to an injury. She is healthy and ready to race.
“We are going to train like it was any other year and see what we can do in the future,” said Hayes. “I cannot plan for the unknown, so we are just going to plan like previous years.”
20 Hinsdale Central
Coach – Mark McCabe
2019 Finish – 3rd, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Catie McCabe SO (63, 18:00), Sarah Fischer SO (77, 18:08), Louisa Brorson JR (82, 18:10), Megan Lu JR, Kendall Griffin SR, Claire Sciartino SR, Mai-Jenna Sakho SO, Ava Marginean JR, Gigi Gottfried JR, London Maxwell SO, Catie McDonnell FR
Preview – This team will be extremely young but good enough to again challenge for a trip to Detweiller Park if we get to that point. The Red Devilettes did have a standout season finishing third in the state and then fourth the following week at the NXR Midwest Regionals.
Three runners are back from those teams. All of them are underclassmen. Catie McCabe and Sarah Fischer had standout freshmen seasons and will lead for Central. The two runners were separated by only eight seconds at the state meet. Louisa Bronson will be with the two sophomores. She was two seconds behind Fischer at state, six seconds behind McCabe at NXR. All three runners will be trading off the top spot this fall.
” In spring, I was communicating virtually and also individually daily with all of the top varsity runners,” their coach Mark McCabe said. McKenna (Revord), Emma (Watcke), Catie, and Sarah were all extremely fit by mid-May. While we chose not to time trial or track race in summer, they had a season of training similar to what they would have had, though more strength based. Outstanding leadership from McKenna and Emma for the younger girls during this period.
Catie McDonnell is new to the program but could contribute immediately. The freshman was going to play volleyball this fall. That got moved. Coach McCabe believes she could be in the top five. There will be development and growth in the top seven this season for this team. Megan Lu and Kendall Griffin are some of the runners that could find a place in the top seven.
“Our theme for the year is “The Power of Now”. I chose this not only for how it always relates to success in running and life (focusing on the process, learning from the past but not dwelling on it, preparing for the future but not waiting or counting on it, living in the moment and the here and now, breaking the race into manageable pieces, etc, etc.), but also for how it relates particularly to the whole changed and fluid situation we are in now…Seize the Moment,” said Coach McCabe.
21 Naperville Neuqua Valley
Coach – Bruyn Yunk
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Maria Widmann SR, Tala Yacoub SR, Jessie Bailey SR, Emily Stine SR, Sydney Kearns SR, Gretchen Leland SO, Abby Apeland SO, Ashley Robinson JR, Bella Gallo SR, Jackie Carlin JR, Carissa Hamilton SO.
Preview – Bruyn Yunk was the acting Girls Coach during the 2019 season. The word “acting” as taken away from his title about a week ago. He is familiar with this team that finished ninth at the St. Charles East Sectional. The Lady Wildcats were ranked at times during last season. Five runners are back from that team.
“My message for the team this season hasn't really changed from what it would normally be,” Yunk said. “I want athletes who want to be their best self in this sport. That does not mean they have to be the best on the team, but they better be giving me their best efforts each and every day. No matter what the season looks like, we are still going to bring the same intensity to each race.”
Maria Widmann, Jessie Bailey, and Emily Stine had good summers of training and are ready to lead this team. Carissa Hamilton is a newcomer to cross-country running after playing volleyball last fall. She finished third in a team time-trial last week showing that she will make an impact on their top five.
The team will need to rely on tight pack running this fall for team success. The Lady Wildcats are projected to have a 37 second split on their top five to begin this season.
22 Barrington
Coach – Debbie Revolta
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Molly FitzPatrick SR (19, 17:13), Anne Berquist SR (99, 18:20), Morgan Magio SR (122, 18:38), Gaby Andrews JR (134, 18:44), Julia Renetzky SR (203, 19:55).
Preview – It could be an interesting season for the Fillies. They finished seventh in last year’s state meet and returned five runners from that team. What will hurt them is the possible loss of their top runner Molly FitzPatrick. She had been nursing an injury since the end of last cross-country season. She has not been doing any running but will hopefully be cleared in the near future to start training according to her coach Debbie Revolta.
“The message for the 2020 season is to give your best each day and appreciate the opportunity to compete,” Revolta said. “My hope is that we can complete a season and have a state meet. I realize this is wishful thinking but that is how we will approach the season.”
Barrington is sure to have a solid pack led by Anne Berquist, Morgan Magio, and Gaby Andrews. The three runners were only separated by 24 seconds last November. Katherine Shein was injured most of last season but ran at league championships and NXR Midwest. She could be a good fit in the top five.
23 New Lenox Lincoln-Way Central
Coach – Ryan Stapinski
2019 Finish – 22nd, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Merrigan Allen SR (45, 17:45), Catherine Ihrke SR (136, 18:46), Colleen Erdman SR (174, 19:08), Emma Olson SO (186, 19:17), Shea Martin SO (202, 19:53), Ceci Nilson SO, Grace Eengenburg JR, Sofia Coglianese SO, Taylor Doyle JR, Charlotte Toosley JR.
Preview – The Lady Knights should make it back to the state meet if there is one. Central finished 22 at last year’s finals. They return five runners from that team. “Our team is excited to have a season despite how different it may look,” said their coach Ryan Stapinski. “Summer conditioning and summer camp participation has been outstanding. It was quite clear that most of the girls were running independently and safely before conditioning began.”
Merrigan Allen will be the top runner on this team entering this season. She ran the second fastest time in school history (17:45) when she finished 45 in last year’s state meet. To be among the top 25 3A Girls runners is within her reach. Seniors Catherine Ihrke and Coleen Eidman give the team a solid starting point behind Allen. Freshman Nadia Bowden is running for the first time on a team and could contribute immediately. Sophomores Emma Olson and Shea Martin should also challenge for top five spots.
24 Wilmette Loyola Academy
Coach – ChrisJon Simon
2019 Finish – 6th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Ellie Grammas SO (47, 17:49), Sarah Jay SR (153, 18:54), Morgan Mackie FR, Maeve Norman SO, Hayes Flanagan SR, Meghan O’Donoghue JR, Illiana Arroyo SR, Nicole Cleland SR, Carolyn Garafoli JR, Reese Giodaro SR, Catherine Lynch JR.
Preview – Loyola Academy came close to qualifying for the state meet but fell short finishing sixth in the Lake Park Sectional. They do have a strong nucleus back with six runners returning. The big addition to the team will be Morgan Mackie. The incoming freshman ran 11:00 for 3200-meters and 5:00 for 1600-meters at the Meet of Champions at the end of July. She will compliment the Ramblers that ran in last year’s state meet.
Ellie Grammas finished 47th as a freshman and will look for a top 25 finish. Sarah Jay also made it to state and will be close to Grammas and Mackie. Maeve Norman and Hayes Flanagan look to find their way into the top five. Loyola missed state last year. They have the talent to make some noise if we have a state meet. “We communicated weekly on Tuesday via zoom,” Coach ChrisJon Simon said. “We actually had better communication and attendance at the zooms than ever. We had weekly speakers from former LA runner Kathryn House who is now competing at Michigan to former IL standout Stephanie Brown. Both had great advice for the girls.”
25 Palatine
Coach – Joe Parks
2019 Finish – 24th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Anna Marie Jordan SR (70, 18:03), Laura Seeberger SR (157, 18:56), Tara O’Sullivan SO (158, 18:57), Ruth Hall SO (183, 19:15), Katelyn Whitcomb SO (189,19:19), Mia Solano SR, Stephanie Churchill JR, Caroline Kawiecki SO, Kelsie Fletcher SR, Kaylee Hollis SO, Annie Thomas SO, Emma Zach SO, Mia Solano SR.
Preview – Five of their top seven return from last year’s state meet team. They will miss one of their top seven runners Ellie Roy who decided not to run this fall. Anna Marie Jordan will be the team’s top runner again this fall. Do not be surprised if she is among the top 30 Class 3A runners this fall. Mia Solano missed all of last season due to mononucleosis. She is healthy and should be one of the top five runners. The Lady Pirates should have a strong pack led by Laura Seeberger. Do not be surprised if their second through fifth runner split stays under 25 seconds. They will just need to keep that pack within 25 seconds of Jordan.
“Our main focus is to still train like we normally would with goals to become a stronger and closer team,” said Coach Joe Parks. “That being said, I just hope each day that XC practice can bring a since of normalcy to their day for a couple hours and I hope that those with big ambitions will get opportunities to see the results of their work.”
26 Cary-Grove
Coach – Mark Anderson
2019 Finish – 10th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional.
Runners to Watch – Morgan Dieschbourg SR, Maggie Mason SR, Delaney Blohm SR, Juliana Ferrera SO, Ada Saletaik SO, Ellie Miller SR, Natalie Warren JR, Georgia Boone SO, Jocelyn Onstot SO.
Preview – Five runners return from last year’s top seven with hopes on improving their 10th place sectional finish. Seniors Morgan Dieschbourg, Maggie Mason, and Delaney Blohm should be the top three runners entering this season. Juliana Ferrera should lead the pack behind the front three. The top five split at the beginning of this season is projected to be near 70 seconds.
27 Normal Community
Coach – Tom Patten
2019 – 6th, Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Olivia Hartke JR (55, 17:55), Ali Ince FR, Addie Snoeyink FR, Lauren Sanderson SR, Liberty Harmon SR, Anna Sewell SR, Megan Metz SO, Brianna Conley JR, Annika Luthe SO, Isle Fader JR, Maddie Moore SR.
Preview – A team that could be the top squad in Central Illinois. Normal missed qualifying for state by one spot in 2019. They should be in position to do so in 2020. “We had no big surprises in summer running,” said their coach Tom Patten. “Everyone seems happy to have a little bit of structure back in their lives.”
Olivia Hartke qualified individually for state last fall placing 55. She will have help in the front. Ali Ince won the IESA State 3A title last fall and recently ran 5:00 for the 1-Mile Run. Addie Snoeyink finished 15th in the IESA race. She gives them a solid top three with Lauren Sanderson close behind. Hartke and Ince should qualify individually. It would be a better chance for this team to make the short trip to Detweiller Park for state.
28 Winnetka New Trier
Coach – John Burnside
2019 Finish – 16th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Emma Braband SR (103, 18:22), Olivia Bhote SR (113, 18:27), Samantha Fellman JR (160, 18:57), Elizabeth Ponko SR (208, 20:06), Katherine Forbes SO, Lillia Osbourne SR, Clare Finnigan SO, Elaine Skiados JR, Colleen Charchut JR, Anna Mathy JR.
Preview – New Trier lost their top three runners because of graduation. The Lady Trevians will return four runners that were on the 16th place state meet team. Seniors Emma Braband and Olivia Bhote were the team’s fourth and fifth runners at the end of the last season. They will challenge for the top spot. Samantha Fellman, Katherine Forbes, Elizabeth Ponko, and Lillia Osborne were in the top seven during the state series. All four could be in the top five. New Trier thrives off good pack running. Watch for a top five split under 49 seconds to start the season.
29 Rockton Hononegah
Coach – Darryl Rohrer
2019 Finish – 11th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Hailey Henry JR, Indigo Sterud SO, Lauren Johnston SR, Isabel Henry SR, Melinda Touvannas JR, Ryanne Bronniman JR, Hannah Pickard JR, Erin Collins JR, Amelia Pickard SO, Sam Risley SR.
Preview – Hononegah will return four runners from last year’s top seven that finished 11th at the St. Charles East Sectional. There should be a 15 second top three pack with Hailey Henry, Indigo Sterud, and Lauren Johnston part of that group. The team is projected to have a 71 second split on their top five to start this season.
30 Orland Park Sandburg
Coach – Tony Pena
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional
Runners to Watch – Brielle Morris SR (170, 19:05), Paige Killen SR (201, 19:42), Ella Jeffries SR, Raegan Howeniec SO, Caroline Gaitlan SR, Shelby Fuller SR, Abigail Vaughan-Lee SO, Hailey Kolinski JR, Jordan Gwyen-Austin JR, Ava Giblin FR, Lily Molloy FR, Katie Roche FR.
Preview – The mix of veteran leadership sprinkled with the innocence of freshmen could make this a great season for the Eagles. Sandburg finished ninth in last year’s sectional race and return seven runners. There are more runners waiting in the wings waiting for their chance.
Brielle Morris and Paige Killen qualified individually for last year’s state meet. They will use that experience for their senior seasons. Ella Jeffries was the team’s top runner most of last season but did not run in their sectional race. She could be the top runner if she is healthy. A strong group of freshmen join the team this fall. Ava Giblin, Lily Molloy, and Katie Roche all have the talent to run in their top five.
“We talked at the conclusion of camp about taking advantage of opportunities,” said their coach Tony Pena. “If we have learned anything the past 5 months it is to take nothing for granted. When opportunities present themselves we must be prepared to take advantage of those opportunities. The girls know we have an opportunity to have a good season but at this point it is just an opportunity. We must prepare ourselves to take advantage of this opportunity.”
Next 20 Schools (In Alphabetical Order)
Algonquin Jacobs
Coach – Kevin Christian
2019 Finish – 12th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Kelly Carpenter JR, Avery Mason JR, Alyssa Madera SO, Elizabeth Kania JR, Ella Tamburrino JR, Bridget Moore SO, Natali Varela SO, Alexandra Skuza JR, Adeline Gorman SO, Natalia Maciarowski SO.
Preview – A young team with none of their projected top 10 runners seniors. Five runners are back from their sectional team that finished 12th at Hoffman Estates. Kelly Carpenter and Elizabeth Kania figure to be the top runners for this team. Carpenter did run 18:24 at the end of last September at Detweiller Park. This team is ready to take the next step in the rugged Fox Valley Conference. They finished eighth last fall.
“Let’s go after it,” Coach Kevin Christian has told his team. “The kids are overly excited. We know it is not a typical season, but train and race like it is.”
Chicago Marist
Coach – Patrick Quinn
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional
Runners to Watch – Nora McClorey JR, Nora McNicholas JR, Emma Karczewski JR, Lilly Roche SR, Abigail Quinn JR, Megan Cavanaugh SO, Alyssa Zin SO.
Preview – Marist will look to repeat on their second-pace conference finish behind defending Class 2A champion Benet Academy. Four of their top five runners are back from the team that finished 8th at the Hinsdale Central Sectional. Nora McClorey should be the top runner for the RedHawks. Their projected top five split to begin the season should be around 70 seconds.
Edwardsville
Coach – George Patrylak
2019 Finish – 25, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Riley Knoyle SO (20, 17:14), Makenna Lueking JR (143, 18:48), Madison Strotheide SO (193, 19:25), Jillian Welsh JR (205, 19:59), Kaitlyn Loyet SR (207, 20:04), Anna Singh JR (210, 20:35), Arabella Ford SO, Maya Lueking FR, Dylan Peel FR, Whitney Dyckman FR.
Preview – It could be a tough year for Edwardsville considering the guidelines for scheduling meets. They can only schedule against conference opponents or schools within their region. Sophomore Riley Knoyle, who finished 20 in last year’s state meet, has been training with the Boys team during the summer. She ran 5:01 for 1600-meters in a time-trial at the end of May. “I worry that Riley is going to struggle to find the competition she needs,” said her Coach George Patrylak. “The current rules of competing against conference schools and schools in your COVID-19 region will affect her ability to be pushed. I look forward to seeing her battle Payton Schieppe from O'Fallon, but that is the only other All-State caliber runner she will face if we don't have any changes to this season.”
The Lady Tigers have six runners back from their state team led by Knoyle and Makenna Lueking. They will also have Kaitlyn Loyet closer to the front. She ran with iron deficiencies in 2019. A strong freshman group headed by Maya Lueking and Dylan Peel will be a big help.
Fox Lake Grant
Coach – Jeff Durlak
2019 Finish – 11th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Aly Negovetich JR (4, 16:42), Brianna Osmon SO, Laura Bishop JR, Clarissa Cervantes SO, Esthela Avitia JR, Marissa Tellez JR, Daisy Castro JR, Alicia Elizakle JR.
Preview – The Lady Bulldogs will look to improve on last year’s finish in their sectional race. They will have Aly Negovetich leading them and going after a state title. “We have been meeting for summer camp for the last 4 weeks from Monday-Friday,” said their coach Jeff Durlak. “Our girls numbers are down significantly right now. We will have a decent number of newcomers that will continue to improve as the season progresses. Our top 3 returners (Aly Negovetich, Brianna Osmon, and Laura Bishop) have really stayed consistent in their training these last few months and are in great shape to start the year.”
Geneva
Coach – Peter Raak
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Lauren Hasty SR, Lily Ryan JR, McKenna Mertes SO, Kayla Stone JR, Elise Waldchen SO, Julianna Longo JR, Rebecca Spezzano SO, Yamilet Hernandez SO, Grace Coskey SO, Andrea Ramirez JR, Tessa Balc SR.
Preview – Geneva lost their top two runners to graduation but return the remaining five the finished 8 at the St. Charles East Sectional. Lauren Hasty is close to a minute faster than the rest of the team. She should be their #1 runner heading into this season. “ The girls have done a nice job getting in their summer fitness base,” said Geneva Coach Peter Raak. “Seniors Tessa Balc and Lauren Hasty have been good role models for the others to look up to. Lily Ryan and Mckenna Mertes have also stepped up with their running and leadership. I will look for them to continue to make a big impact on the team this season.”
Ryan and Mertes will lead the pack behind Hasty. The second to five pack’s split could be close to 45 seconds. It will be the gap between Hasty and the pack that will need to be cut down.
Gurnee Warren Township
Coach – Brett Heimstead
2019 Finish – 6th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Raina Rice JR, Taylor Latza SR, Mia Pasha SO, Nicole Harrison SR, Chloe Yoder JR, Sophia Laconis JR, Caralyn Whalen SO, Morgan Vawter SO, Brooke Sturt JR, Kylie Florence SO.
Preview – After winning their second North Suburban Conference title in a row, Warren Township just missed a trip to the state meet finishing sixth at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Five of their top seven runners are back. Their top three runners return led by Raina Rice. There was only a 44 second split between that group. Finding runners that can stay close to their first three will be something to watch for this fall.
Libertyville
Coach – Alison Reifenberg
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Sheila Tucker SO, Bree Ponchak JR, Annalese Chudy SR, Katharine Meyer JR, Lyann Tam SR, Isabella Cramp SO, Margaret Lothspeich SO, Leah Chudy SO, Elise Rodriguez SR, Isabella Cioretti SO.
Preview – Libertyville came close to advancing to state when they finished 7th at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Sheila Tucker finished 13th in that race and was the eighth individual not on a team and missing state by one spot. Tucker should be one o the elite sophomores in the state this fall with good chances of making it to Peoria.
Bree Ponchak should be a solid second runner. The projected split from their third to fifth runners entering this season is close to two minutes. Work will need to be done to lower that in order to stay within the top seven sectional teams.
Moline
Coach – Tauwon Taylor
2019 Finish – 10,th Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Lylia Gomez SR (51, 17:53), Grace Vinzant SR, Madison Lodico SR, Abby DeBlieck SO, Eryn Robertson SO, Lilianna Flores SO, Alyson Benson SO, Alexis Havercamp FR, Ryleigh Robertson SO.
Preview – The Maroons return six of their top seven runners that placed 10 at the Normal Sectional. Lylia Gomez finished 51st at state the next week. Moline has a nice pack behind Gomez projected to be 25 seconds from their second to fifth runners. The key will be getting that pack closer to their top runner.
It was a rocky start for training in March, but this team appears to be rounding into shape. “My plan was to send out workouts via google classroom during the beginning of shut down. Unfortunately, my school district would not allow us to give workouts or contact our athletes,” said Coach Tauwon Taylor. “They eventually allowed us to contact them, but we couldn't encourage them to train on the track/school property. Thankfully, I was able to reach out to my seniors and send out workouts. I sent out group text for workouts and some got more individualized workouts. I think most of my kids lost motivation once the season was officially cancelled.”
Naperville Central
Coach – Matt Blondell
2019 Finish – 10th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Hailey Engels SR, Rebecca Scott SO, Cora Marcet SR, Thrista Bandepalle SR, Julia Laird SO, Katie Springer SO, Sophia Gonzalez JR, Ava Howard SO, Addison George SO, Robyn Flakus SO.
Preview – Two of their top five, four of their top seven return for the Redhawks after finishing 10 in their sectional race. Hailey Engels and Rebecca Scott finished within two seconds of each other and should be the top runners for this team. Cora Marcet is another runner you could see in the front with Engels and Scott. This team is young with a quality group of sophomores waiting to jump into the top seven.
“Our message to our girls has been simple, “Embrace every day, be grateful, and take advantage of every opportunity we have to meet as a team,” said Central Coach Matt Blondell. “In these different times, you don’t know when that can be taken away from you.”
New Lenox Lincoln-Way West
Coach – Matthew Bowden
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Gianna Arizzi SO, Hailey Novak JR, Taylor Novak JR, Vanessa Evans JR, Olivia Cuestas SO, Sophia Bach JR, Caitlin Vanoss SO, Delaney Frigo SO, Elizabeth Hegil SO, Makenzie Schussler SR, Morgan Sallese FR, Annie Pinciak FR.
Preview – A team that could surprise some teams this fall. The Warriors finished ninth last year in the Normal Sectional and return five of their top seven runners from that race. Gianna Arizzi is having a great summer of training and will step into the top spot for West. Haley and Taylor Novak could be pushing Arizzi in the front. A pair of freshman, Morgan Sallese and Annie Pinciak, have been running with the front group and could influence the top five this fall. The team is projected to have a 45 second top five split. Moving that pack closer to the front could make things happen for this team.
“Gianna Arizzi has become a powerhouse this summer,” said her coach Matt Bowden. “She was our #2 last season as a freshman, and she has put in a lot of quality miles since March. She will definitely do some damage this fall. Overall, the fitness level on the team really varied depending on the spring sport. For the most part, the track girls came in with a solid base and have continued to build. Kids who lost soccer, badminton, and junior high sports started behind that pack, but they are working hard to catch up.”
O’Fallon
Coach – Neil James
2019 Finish – 23rd, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Sofia Parker SR (120, 18:36), Julia Monson JR (133, 18:43), Maddy Voice SR (188, 19:19), Olivia Anderson JR (206, 20:01), Peyton Schieppe SR, Avery Taake SO, Sophie Moffett SR, Elly Parks SO, Hannah Zura SO.
Preview – A team that just missed our initial top 30 ratings. O’Fallon finished 23rd in last year’s state meet. They return four runners from that state team. Their big addition is the return of senior Peyton Schieppe. She ran 17:31 in mid-September at the Richard Spring Invitational. An injury after that sidelined her for the rest of the season. Sofia Parker should lead the second pack behind Schieppe. The Panthers also received a transfer into their program. Hannah Zura is a transfer from Guam who figures to be in their top five according to Coach Neil James.
“Summer camp went well as you could tell the team was excited to be back together and working,” James said. “I had a few younger runners who really put in time this summer and could help as some point this year. The runners who were consistent with their training and are ahead of where they were at this point last year.”
Oswego East
Coach – Lisa Cook
2019 Finish – 6th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Madison Zarembski JR, Naylah Allen SR, Ana Barroso JR, Leah Allgaier JR, Hannah King JR, Emily Salmeron SR, Angela Goduto SR, Sydney Williams SO, Maddi Amer JR, Meghan Johnson SO, Nicky Hartigan JR, Veronica Hamilton SO, Morgan Dick FR.
Preview – The Wolves just making it to the sectional meet in 2018 finishing seventh in their regional. They finished in last year’s sectional race at St. Charles East. What is next for Oswego East in 2020? They return five of their top seven from the sectional team with their top two runners from 2019 graduated.
“Our biggest message was one that came out in one of the distance coaches' virtual clinics--that this is the most important team we've ever coached,” Coach Lisa Cook said. “We keep going off of the motto "stronger together" (even when apart). We plan to approach each and every race and dual meet like it is the most important thing they could be doing. Regardless of races and meets, we are grateful for the opportunity to get to practice and meet with our team, and our seniors are just excited for the chance at their final season on the team.”
Madison Zarembski and Naylah Allen should be the leaders in the front for the Wolves. The pack will need to move closer to the duo in the front. Ana Barroso, Leah Allgaier, and freshman Morgan Dick are some of the runners that will need to close the gap to close to 30 seconds.
Palatine Fremd
Coach – Joe Marcin
2019 Finish – 14th, Class 3A State
Runners to Watch – Amanda Markham SO (151, 18:53), Norah Odle SR (169, 19:04), Jillian Price JR, Kaili Decker JR, Sara Nolting SR, Nikki Cambray JR, Ronni Barto SR.
Preview – It should be a rebuilding season for the Vikings. Fremd finished 14 in last year’s state meet but graduate their top five runners from that team. Amanda Markhum ran 18:53 at state but was the team’s second runner in their sectional race. Norah Odle is Fremd’s other state returnee. The team does have the talent as 8 to 10 runners will challenge for the five top seven spots.
Park Ridge Maine South
Coach – Jeff Dowling
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Maria Marcucci JR, Tara Murphy SR, Mary Claire Koch SO, Danielle Ammentorp SR, Payton Tauber SR, Morgan Giaia SO, Adeline Cook SR, Amelia Miulli SO, Aine Ronan SO, Kendall Oslowski SR.
Preview – The Hawks will look to improve on their ninth-place sectional finish returning six runners from that race. Maine South relied on tight pack running at last year’s sectional with three seconds separating their first three runners led by Maria Marcucci.
“We finished the five week summer camp and it was an interesting experience,” Coach Jeff Dowling said. “It seems like every day we were waiting for that to be the last day, what with other schools shutting down camps due to COVID-19 outbreaks. I was impressed by everyone and how diligent they were during quarantine in putting in miles and getting quality work done (either individually early on, in small groups later, or in bigger groups right before camp started.). We had many girls doing great work to stay in shape. So, for me, they all stood out as a team.”
Pekin
Coach – Allie Jones
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Jay Lynn Riley SO, Lily Wagemann SR, Olivia Wolf JR, Emma Cox JR, Lauren Filarski SO, Kylie Oyer SO, Jayvian Riley SR.
Preview – The seventh-place finish by Pekin in the Normal Sectional last year was a little deceiving. Jay Lynn Riley was the team’s top runner most of the season. In that sectional race, she turned out to be the team’s seventh runner. Riley and Lily Wagemann should be the team’s top runners with hopes of making it to the state meet. They will need a top five split under 72 seconds to make a state trip happen.
Plainfield North
Coach – Tammy Gummerson
2019 Finish – 6th, Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional
Runners to Watch – Aminah Hussain JR (167, 19:03), Michelle Masis JR, Emily Shafton JR, Katie Nalley SR, Lauren Walczak JR, Morgan Raclawski JR, Ella Powell SO.
Preview – The Tigers ran one of their best races at sectionals last season finishing sixth overall. This team shows promise enter the season. Four runners are back from that sectional team. Six of their top seven runners are underclassmen. Aminah Hussain qualified for the state meet in 2019 as an individual. That experience for her should payoff this fall. The team’s top five split is projected to be at 60 seconds. Moving the pack up this fall closer to the front could get them closer to going back to Peoria as a team.
South Elgin
Coach – Jorie Bartholomew
2019 Finish – 13th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Naomi Ruff JR (60, 17:59), Heather Durrant SO, Angelica Harris SO, Roberta Morales SO, Emily De La Mora JR, Piper Engel SO, Lexi Blonden JR.
Preview – This is a young team that could surprise some this fall. All seven runners (all underclassmen) are back from their 13th place sectional team. “We are really stressing that we are happy we have a season,” said their coach Jorie Bartholomew. “Our message has been we have a fall season and we feel lucky for that. We know things are different and can change quickly so we are happy there is something to look forward to.”
Naomi Ruff did not have her best state race last year finishing 60th overall. She finished 12th as a freshman in 2018. Watch for her to bounce back this fall.
Villa Park Willowbrook
Coach – Clyde Ware
2019 Finish – 10th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Amelia Barrington SO, Melissa Martinez SR, Madeline Barrington JR, Lily Weder JR, Daylee Broden SR, Cailey Dotson SO, Yazmin Setaram SO, Abby Kusmierz SO.
Preview – The Warriors surprised some last fall finishing tenth at the Lake Park Sectional. Five return to improve on their finish led by Melissa Martinez and Amelia Barrington. Watch for the top five split on this team. It is a good thing if they can stay under 60 seconds this fall.
Wheaton North
Coach – Peter Anderson
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Sophia Spencer JR, Eleanor Quinn SR, Anna Roe JR, Emily Burnham SR, Melia Klingler JR, Janna Postma SO, Jacelyn Johnson JR, Chloe Podewell SO.
Preview – Four runners are back for the Wheaton North squad that finished 7 in the Lake Park Sectional. There are 9 to 10 runners that will challenge for the top seven varsity spots.
“For the last 9 weeks, I have sent the week's practice plan, including workouts, out on Remind, in their emails, and in a Google Classroom for the team,” Coach Peter Anderson said. “The girls were doing a good job on their own. We had weekly check-ins on Google Meets as well. When camp started, I kept up the weekly postings for the girls who chose not to do camp. The girls at camp, after the first week, mostly agreed that it was better to do the workouts as a team.
They felt pushed and more motivated. That being said, the two-mile time trial times from last week were not too much slower than a year ago. Several JV girls had good drops. The varsity girls have, for the most part, a way to go corporately. I feel if we had been able to meet as a team all summer, their fitness would be better. Our #2 girl from last summer, Sophia Spencer looked good and she has shown a nice drive at camp. Jacelyn Johnson was our fastest in the time trial and she was a girl who pushed for a varsity spot last year but could not get there. She is a pleasant surprise.”
Wheeling
Coach – Erin Pedersen
2019 Finish – 13th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Brenda Torres SO (32, 17:32), Jasmine Bautista SR, Brianna Ruiz JR, Jessica Avalos JR, Iran Teran SR, Melanie Kahr JR, Marisol Orozco JR, Emily Flores JR, Jackie Medina SR.
Preview – The Wildcats will look to improve on their 2019 13th place sectional finish at Busse Woods. Six runners are back from that sectional team. Brenda Torres again should be the team’s top runner. She qualified for the state meet last year as an individual and maybe was the biggest surprise of the top 50 finishers when she placed 32nd. Big things are ahead for this sophomore this fall. Jasmine Bautista will lead the pack behind Torres. The split will need to improve. It is projected to be 80 seconds on their second runner through their fifth runner.
20 More Schools to Watch (In Alphabetical Order)
Aurora Metea Valley
Coach – Eric Anerino
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Sarah Maggio JR, Keely Behr JR, Mary Snyder JR, Shannon Farmer JR, Eileen McKernan JR, Natalie Weisman SR, Hailey Finch JR.
Preview – It could be a rebuilding season for the Mustangs after finishing seventh in the St. Charles East Sectional. Only two runners are back from that sectional team. Six of the projected top seven for the start of the season should be juniors. Sarah Maggio was the team’s second runner most of last season She will be the leader for Metea Valley this fall.
Bartlett
Coach – Christina Rentner
2019 Finish – 14th, Class 3A St. Charles East Sectional
Runners to Watch – Jenna Buchanan JR (30, 17:27), Camille Buchanan SR (139,18:47), Kayci Regalado SR, Jillian Murdoch JR, Bridget Benson SR, Risa Jones SR, Grace Daum SO, Arissa Kramer SO, Kristin Farabaugh FR.
Preview – Five runners are back from the Bartlett team that finished 14th in the St. Charles East Sectional. Jenna and Camille Buchanan will have one last season to run together. Both sisters made it to the state meet last fall. Jenna Buchanan ran her best race of the season placing 30th. Her sister Camille did not have a great race finishing 139th. The two in races last year leading up to state usually had a gap of 10 seconds.
“We are so very lucky to be competing this season,” said Bartlett Coach Christina Rentner. “My biggest thing is reminding them to just enjoy running, competing, and being with teammates. Do not worry so much about place, time, and getting so nervous before a competition. I want them all to realize or rediscover their love for running, never take anything for granted, and cherish every opportunity to compete, as we have learned it can be taken away in a moment's notice.”
Bolingbrook
Coach – John Sullivan
2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional
Runners to Watch – Ellie DeFarno JR (146, 19:03), Maggie Mueller SO, Yaneli Izaguirre SR, Kaylee Pannek JR, Taylor Kokenes JR, Avri Watson SO, Alexis Flores SR, Denise Kucan JR
Preview – The Raiders had one of the better sectional performances in their recent history placing seventh at the Hinsdale Central Sectional. Six of their top seven from that team do return. Ellie DeFarno was a state individual qualifier and will be the team’s top runner once again. Maggie Mueller will lead the pack behind DeFarno.
Carpentersville Dundee-Crown
Coach – Ronald Delarmente
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A Palatine Regional
Runners to Watch – Kaylee Brodie SO, Melina Garcia SO, Pundit Tetteh JR, Gabriella Myslo JR, Paulina Tinajero SO, Zoe Lind SR, Jacqueline Juarez SO, Lydia Anderson SO.
Preview – The Chargers will look to better their 2019 finish when they placed eighth in the Palatine Regional. Kaylee Brodie will be one of the runners to watch up front. She did qualify individually to the regional. Melina Garcia had a strong first half of her freshman season until a hip injury sidelined her for the rest of the season. Garcia should be running side-by-side with Brodie.
“Every chance we’re able to get out there as a group for practice or competition is a gift and an opportunity to get better,” said Coach Ronald Delarmente. “The season, the next race, and the next day are not guaranteed so enjoy and appreciate every minute.”
Chicago Lane Tech
Coach – Kris Roof
2019 Finish – 13th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Laine Sullivan SR, Sophia Rivera SR, Fiona Glascott SR, Kate McNamara SO, Kylie Shariberg JR, Francesca Spingola JR, Nora Leff JR.
Preview – Lane Tech ran a good race at the end of last year despite the situation they had to go through. They had less than 24 hours to prepare for the sectional race after a judicial injunction allowed them to run. Tech should have one of the top teams in the city and will defend their city title. Laine Sullivan and Sophia Rivera should be the runners leading this team.
Chicago Mother McAuley
Coach – Kelly Malone
2019 Finish – 10th, Class 3A Hinsdale Central Sectional
Runners to Watch – Evelyn Rowan SR (156, 18:56), Natalie Wagner SR, Heather Wagner JR, Nora Deacy JR, Gianna Kmak JR, Tess Cleary SO, Elizabeth Marcelle JR, Hollyn Nolte SO, Grace Rowan SR.
Preview – The top five runners are back for Mother McAuley that ran in the Hinsdale Central. The team finished 10th in that race. Evelyn Rowan did qualify for the state meet out of that race. She finished 156th the following week in Peoria. Rowan should be the team’s top runner. What could be concerning for this team is that their top five split was near two minutes at the end of last year. That needs to get cut by 30 seconds for this team to get close to a state appearance.
Chicago Whitney Young
Coach – Alan Edwards
2019 Finish – 15th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Daphne Murray JR, Adrienne Weiner SO, Stella Lyung SR, Sarah Craft SR, Pelin Blanton JR, Reese Hoffman SO, Marley Kravitz SR.
Preview – The Lady Dolphins will chase after another Chicago City Championships after finishing 2nd last season. Daphne Murray was the team’s top runner in that race and should lead this team this fall. With Murray up in front, the team split on their op five is projected to be near two minutes. Adrienne Weiner and Stella Lyung appear the next runners leading the pack.
Deerfield
Coach – Jeff Beaumont
2019 Finish – 7, Class 3A Lake Forest Regional
Runners to Watch – Lexi Schott SO, Caroline Reich JR, Madeline Trella JR, Nicole Dobrin SR, Lauren Barber SO, Annie Fisher JR, Sofia Martinez SR, Leah Ryan SO
Preview – A team that should take the next step up to sectional competition. The Warriors finished seventh in the Lake Forest Regional. They return six runners from that team. Two of those runners, Lexi Schott, and Caroline Reich, advanced individually to the sectional meet. They should be two of the runners leading this team.
“The overall fitness level of our team is the best it's been in a long time, possible ever, especially for this time of year,” said their coach Jeff Beaumont. “Our top girls have safely built up to more miles than they've done in previous years and it's paying off. Our timed runs are already faster than where they ended last season. We only graduated one senior from our top 7, so we have about 8-10 girls who have separated themselves from the rest and are ready to compete. Our top girl right now is junior Madeline Trella. She played volleyball as a freshman, but after a successful track season she committed to cross country as a soph. She was one of our top runners early in the season last year but dropped off considerably as the fall went on. It was not until late in the year we found out she had low iron levels. That has been straightened out and she is strong right now. So I would not say she is a "surprise," but it's nice to see Madeline healthy and running the way she should.”
The team’s top five split could be near 50 seconds. Lowering that time could be the boost that Deerfield will need. They should have learned from last year’s experiences. “With the season upon us and remote learning starting again, a major focus will be using cross country as a healthy outlet in their day,” said Beaumont. “Deerfield is starting remotely, so after staring at their screens for 7-8 hours, getting out of the house and being with others (in a socially distant way) will go a long way towards keeping their social emotional health in check.”
Evanston Township
Coach – Rosette Ochoa
2019 Finish – 8, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Hope Leman SR (27, 17:22), Ella Gutierrez SO, Lauren Dain JR, Mollie Davis SR, Emily McCardlish SR, Mayerli Collantes-Cook SR, Mia Dzwierzynski SR, Gabrielle Froum SR.
Preview – If should be a rebuilding season for Evanston with only two runners that finished in their sectional meet returning. One of those runners is Hope Leman who qualified for the state meet. Leman missed all-state honors by two spots placing 27. She could be among the top 15 Class 3A runners this fall. Ella Gutierrez also returns for the Lady Wildkits.
Frankfort Lincoln-Way East
Coach – Wendy Hegarty
2019 Finish – 8th, Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Kate Guderjan JR (142, 18:48), Hallie Hoger JR, Emma Roberts SO, Tori Tverdek SO, Olivia Remblake JR, Jillian Ketchen SR, Tori Entwistle SR, Ashley Mills SR, Victoria Hay JR, Alison Hickey SR.
Preview – Six of their top seven runners are back from the team that finished eighth at the Normal Sectional. Kate Guderjan did make it to Detweiller Park as an individual qualifier and again will be the leader for the Griffins. Hallie Hoger finished 36 seconds behind Guderjan in the sectional race and will be a solid second runner. The team is projected to have a top five split of 160 seconds. That inner pack, from the second to fifth runner, will need to get closer together for this team to see overall improvement.
Glenview Glenbrook South
Coach – Meaghan Fastert
2019 Finish – 9th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Maggie Jortberg SO, Molly Durow JR, Kiki Patton SO, Mia Rojas SO, Tara Winrtschorek SO, Bella Trapp SR, Alex Kleeman SR.
Preview – We should see improvement from the Titans this year. Four of their top five runners will be sophomores. Six of their top seven runners are back from their ninth-place sectional team.
“Maggie Jortberg has not surprised me in any way, but I feel like she should be highlighted in the sense that she has worked extremely hard all summer even with the thought of having an altered season at best,” said her coach Meaghan Fastert. “She just perseveres and sees her goals through, which is just incredible to watch. The overall fitness level of the team this year has been vastly different from year's past because of the fact that so many girls are interested in running due to the IHSA postponing many seasons. With that said, many girls are running 3 miles for the very first time and many of them have not run all summer. So, we are trying to meet all of our athletes where they are at endurance wise and then pushing them from there. It will be an interesting season for sure, but I have a feeling it will be the most rewarding when it is all said and done. When you can teach a non-runner how to love the sport and everything that it stands for and watch the transformation throughout the season, it is absolutely beautiful. And ultimately, it is why I am a coach.”
Granite City
Coach – Rich Skirbill
2019 Finish – 11th, Class 3A Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Clare Sykes SR, Lacey Kunz SR, Lauryn Fenoglio SO, Shannon Roustio JR, Lillian Harris JR, Kendra Kirkover SR, Rowan Wallace SO, Emilee Franklin FR.
Preview – Five runners are back from Granite City’s 11 place sectional team Clare Sykes could be one of the top runners in the Eastern Metro St. Louis area and will lead this team. Fellow senior Lacey Kunz will be a solid second runner.
“2020 has been weird and may get stranger,” Coach Rich Skirbill said. “Stay positive. Always find the positive to the situation. Control the things you can, pray for the best and let things that are out of your control go. We've all been on an emotional rollercoaster, and if we can stay level-headed and not become rattled, we will be prepared for what's ahead of us.”
Lake Forest
Coach – Steve Clegg
2019 Finish – 16th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Skyler Kreunen SR (95, 18:49), Gabby Brown JR, Izzy Marisco FR, Olivia Marisco FR, Alexandria Palmberg FR, Olivia Palmberg FR, Amelia Fontana SO, Alexandra Fontana SO, Lauren Zarek SR, Chelsea Tzau SO, Francesca Pezza JR, Ava Schumann SR.
Preview – The Scouts return four of their top five runners that placed 16th in the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Skyler Kreunen made it to state as an individual qualifier placing 95. She again will be the team’s top runner. This is a young team. It could take a couple of meets before we have a good idea about this squad. There is a good freshman group that will have an impact on their top five. “This year is harder to predict as you can imagine,” said their Coach Steve Clegg. “We are still trying to figure out our schedule and how we will run meets. I expect that the NSC (North Suburban Conference) will run time trial races with kids being sent off every 15 seconds to maximize separation, and that each team will send all of their runners, clear the course, before the other team will run. In that format, we will not even really run against other teams at the same time - just merge time lists later to figure out who won. It all is getting unrecognizable to what we all think of as XC.”
Lincolnshire Stevenson

Runners to Watch – Alivia Alton JR, Emma Finnegan SR, Emily Fejes SR, Natalie Dugaesecu JR, Alexa Collins SO, Lia Novak SO, Anushka Khurpa SO, Shannon Moser SO.
Preview – Stevenson lost two of their top five runners. The Patriots will look to improve on last year’s 17th place sectional finish. Alivia Alton appears again to be the top runner for this team like she was in the sectional race. Emma Finnegan should be close to Alton. This team will thrive off pack running if they can keep their top five split under 55 seconds.

Preview – Allison Ihms made it to the state meet last year as a freshman running 18:49 at Detweiller Park. She should be the top runner for the Rams that finished 11th at the Lake Park Sectional. Four runners return from that sectional team. “The messages I have brought forth to the team for the upcoming season are to work hard and have fun,” said Coach Chris Pietsch. “We have a really nice group of runners who are fun to work with.
McHenry

2019 Finish – 7th, Class 3A Palatine Regional
Runners to Watch – Lydia Zancho JR, Alyssa Moore SO, Lynda Rotundo SO, Jessica Letamski JR, Jessie Pfannkuche SO, Emma Keesey JR, Haley Oeffing SO.
Preview – Lydia Zancho and Alyssa Moore qualified individually to the sectional meet last year. The Warriors missed the sectional by six points finishing seventh in the Palatine Regional. Zancho has dealt with injuries during this off time but appears to be ready to go. Moore and Lynda Rotundo have showed big improvement this summer giving McHenry a strong top three runners. “Our challenge is to maintain a team-centered focus with the new reality of isolation and distancing,” said their coach Kevin Horst. “Nurturing athletes' love of running for its own sake has been another goal. We train for cross country because we are runners, not the other way around. Therefore we are happy to run even with the uncertain future of IHSA sports.”

Coach – Chad Aubin
2019 Finish – 12th, Normal Community Sectional
Runners to Watch – Ava Starkey SO, Addysen Clark JR, Madison Piazza SR, Ashleigh Horton SO, Sammy Lehr SO, Emily Jones JR, Lucy Koranek SO.
Preview – The top three runners are back from Normal West’s 12th place sectional finish. Ava Starkey and Addysen Clark were close to each other in races most of last year and should lead the Wildcats. The top five split is projected to be 86 seconds. Cutting that split down by 10 seconds could move this team to the top 10 within their sectional..
Northbrook Glenbrook North
Coach – Bob Leblanc
2019 Finish – 15, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Natalie Sandlow SR (18, 19:13), Tess Slowinski SR, Emma Kim SR, Kelsey Lundgaard JR, Shaunaugh Hartz SR, Nell Badgley JR, Katie Wallace SO.
Preview – Five runners ae back from the sectional lineup that finished 15 at Hoffman Estates. Natalie Sandlow qualified for the state meet for the third year in a row. She did not have her best race of the year placing 180. She was all-state as a sophomore placing 21. Watch for her to bounce back in 2020. “I was impressed by how many runners had been doing things on their own when we weren't allowed to be in contact,” said Coach Bob Leblanc. “However, we also had some that had neglected training a bit, so we had two very different groups of runners reporting the first day of camp.”
Skokie Niles West
Coach – Anne Heselton
2019 Finish – 17th, Class 3A Lake Park Sectional
Runners to Watch – Lily Carey SR, Ella Kinaci SR, Dia Patel JR, Alexis Mazzenga SR, Angeles Alanis SR, Maja Applequist SO, Nandini Shah JR.
Preview – The Wolves could be a team on the rise this fall. All seven runners are back from their 17 place sectional team. Lily Carey will be the runner to watch. She has the talent to make it to state this fall. There is close to a two minute gap between Carey and the rest of the pack. That second through fifth runner pack could be as small as 20 seconds. Closing that deficit on Carey will be something to watch for.
Zion-Benton

2019 Finish – 14th, Class 3A Hoffman Estates Sectional
Runners to Watch – Kelsey Hamilton SR, Audrey Luell SO, Maya Henderson SR, Natalie Figueroa JR, Katelin Hamilton SO, Karen Rios SR, Marisa Johnson JR.
Preview – The one team that pleasantly surprised me throughout last season were the Zee-Bees. They should continue that climb this fall returning six of their top seven that finished 14 in the Hoffman Estates Sectional. Kelsey Hamilton and Audrey Luell should be the front runners on this team. Their top five split could be a problem. It is right now projected to be over three minutes.
