Here are the Boys Cross Country Runners of the Year in Illinois by classification.

Class 3A

It came down to two teammates to decide who was the Class 3A runner of the year. Micah Wilson and Luke Schildmeyer led St. Charles East to the D3 title at the ShaZam Championships in November. They were also pushing each other to be the best runners that they could be. Wilson finished second at the Naperville North while Schildmeyer finished fourth some 21 seconds behind his teammate. Schildmeyer’s confidence grew at the DuKane Conference Meet where he blew by Wilson in the final 300-meters of the race to win in in 14:33. Wilson was five seconds back.

The two runners did not face each other in the sectional and ShaZam races being slotted into different fight races. Wilson ran 14:43 in the 2/3 flight of the Lyons Township Sectional with Schildmeyer four seconds back.

In the ShaZam race, Wilson ran 15:35 in the 2/3 race. Schildmeyer was next in the championship race and ran 15:33 two seconds ahead of his teammate.

Ryan Watts of Edwardsville was nearly unstoppable al season in the southern part of the state. The junior won six races on his way to the ShaZam meet finishing third there eight seconds behind second-place Wilson.

It is hard to separate the two St. Charles East runners. In this category, regular season races are more deciding factors. In this situation with the two runners in separate races at the end of the season. For that reason, it was hard to choose one runner over the other.

Congratulations to Luke Schildmeyer and Micah Wilson of East High School in St. Charles as the 2020 ILXCTF.com Illinois Class 3A Boys Co-Runners of the Year.

Class 2A

There were no illnesses, no injuries for Wilson Georges of Bartonville Limestone this fall season. He fought off pneumonia during his sophomore season just qualifying for state and then finishing seventh in Peoria under those circumstances.

Georges ran with an edge during this season changed by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was untouchable in the eight regular season races that he competed in. He was able to run at Detweiller Park three times in 2020. His fastest came on September 19 at the Peoria Notre Dame Boosters Meet where he ran a personal best of 14:50. He won that race by 14 seconds.

He won the ShaZam D2 title in November running 15:46 on the five-kilometer course. He won by 13 seconds ahead of Ian O’Laughlin of Metamora.

There was no consideration of other runners in this category. Georges was that dominant in 2020.

Congratulations to Wilson Georges of Limestone High School in Bartonville as the 2020 ILXCTF.com Illinois Class 2A Boys Runner of the Year.

Class 1A

There were so many good runners in this classification that had to wait in most cases to race against each other until November due to COVID-19 restrictions. The runner that was on the top again was 2019 Class 1A State Champion Drew Rogers of Herscher. The junior went undefeated during this season including winning the McNamara Regional and the Harvest Christian Academy Sectional on his way to running 15:34 to win the D1 ShaZam race in November.

Miles Sheppard of Hamilton (COOP) finished third in the ShaZam race. He also had a good season winning nine of his ten regular season races. Sheppard’s only setback was when he finished second in the Elmwood Sectional behind Olympia’s Charlie Kistner.

Justin Mumford of Trenton-Wesclin was also considered after he ran 15:41 to finish second behind Rogers at ShaZam. His regular season was nearly perfect as he was undefeated against Class 1A competition. He did finish second at the Granite City Invitational behind 3A’s Ryan Watts of Edwardsville.

Congratulations to Drew Rogers of Herscher High School as the 2020 ILXCTF.com Illinois Class 1A Boys Runner of the Year.
