Congratulations go out to Josephine Welin of Oak Park-River Forest High School in Oak Park as the ILXCTF.com Illinois Girls Runner of the Year for 2020.

We would usually decide the top runner in the state by head-to-head competitions especially if runners are in two different classifications. In this pandemic year of 2020, it changed the way that we looked at everything.

Ava Parekh of Latin School and Josephine Welin ran in the same race as each other. In the USA Meet of Champions in Terre Haute, Indiana on November 15, Parekh had the advantage in the championship race finishing third overall 19 seconds ahead of Welin.

What changes everything around is that the two runners ran in separate races in the three weeks leading up to that Indiana Meet. Both runners easily won those meets in the race that they were in. In none of the three races, either were pushed. It was more of a race against the clock.

Welin had the fastest time in all three meets. Welin ran 16:55 on the Lincoln Park course the weekend of regionals. Parekh before that ran 17:25 to win her regional race.

The sectional races at Lincoln Park the following week had the same outcome. Welin ran 16:33 to win her Class 3A Sectional. Parekh ran 16:44 to win her 2A Sectional.

In the ShaZam Championship races that were held the following weekend, Parekh ran 17:39 to win the D2 race. Welin was timed in 17:25 to win the D3 race the following day.

The one head-to-head performance was important. The three races before that also had significant importance.

Both runners are juniors and have one year left of high school competition. Hopefully, we have a normal cross-country season in 2021 where these two runners can challenge each other in many races.
