Illinois High School Track & Field Weekend Highlights - May 10, 2021

The weather did not heat up this weekend. The performances on and off the track did. Here are highlights from some of those meets.

 

Winston Brown InvitationalBrandon Battle changed up his race routine in this meet instead running on Edwardsville’s three sprint relays. His anchor legs resulted in three relay wins for the Tigers on Friday evening. Edwardsville started with a win in the 4x100 Meter Relay (43.7) ahead of Belleville West (44.36) and Mascoutah (44.38). Battle anchored his team to an IL #2 time of 1:30.66 in winning the 4x200 Meter Relay. Edwardsville ended their night anchored again by Battle running a state leading 3:23.99 to win the race to win by nine seconds ahead of Mascoutah (3:32.11).

 

Devontae Ford of East St. Louis-Senior has been one of the top hurdlers in the state so far this season. Ford switched up on Friday running an IL#2 time of 49.59 to win the 400 Meter Dash.

 

WSC Boys Invitational – The 12-team event held at Glenbard West on Saturday morning featured a four-event win by Glenbard West’s Sean Hopkins. The senior started off his day by jumping a state leading 23’10.25” to win the Long Jump. Rashon Murff of Downers Grove South jumped 22’7.25” (IL #7) to finish second. Hopkins captured his second field event win when he jumped 45’ 0.5” (IL #9) to win the Triple Jump.

 

One of the anticipated events of this meet was the 100 Meter Dash which featured Hopkins and Christopher Radcliff of York. Two days before this meet at a quad meet at Leyden, Ratcliff opened his season by running an IL #3 21.89 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Both athletes got off to great starts and where even at 75 meters when Radcliff pulled up clutching his right leg. Hopkins went on to run 11.03 for the win. Hopkins finished his day by running 22.68 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

 

York improved on their seasonal best in the 4x800 Meter Relay. The quartet of Garrett Schwan, Jackson Geiger, Mickey Vreeland, and Colin Hill ran an IL #2 8:01.68 to win the event ahead of Glenbard West and their 8:09.94 time (IL #7). Less than an hour later, Hill was back on the track to run in the 800 Meter Run. Hill pulled away in the final 100-meters to complete a strong double covering the two laps in 1:58.08 (IL #15) for the win. His split in the 4x8 was an impressive 1:59.2.

 

The first 400-meters in the Class A 1600 Meter Run was covered in a sluggish 70.3 seconds. Pierce Cousins of Glenbard West jumped out of the pack and begun to push the pace. York’s Ethan Summer caught Cousins in the final lap, but the Glenbard West senior would not give up the lead. His time of 4:27.00 was good enough for the win ahead of Summer’s 4:28.34 time.

 

WSC Girls Distance Invitational – While most eyes were watching Palatine to the north, schools in the West Suburban Conference held their own Girls Distance Meet at Downers Grove North. The race of the meet happened in the 1600 Meter Run. Kate Dickman of Lyons Township went under five minutes for the first time this spring as she recorded a 4:58.85 time (IL #5) to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Sophia McNerney of Downers Grove South (5:03.27), Audrey Allman of Glenbard West (5:04.29), and Brooke Berger of York (5:05.29).

 

Josephine Welin of Oak Park-River Forest stepped down a distance in this meet running 2:18.92 to win the 800 Meter Run. Welin finished close to four seconds ahead of Carlin Hass of Glenbard West. York went 1-2 in the 3200 Meter Run as Katherine Klimek and Brianna Bennis came in together at 11:19 separated by only 19 hundredths of a second with Klimek getting the win.

 

Downers Grove North dominated the 4x800 Meter Relay running 9:41.36 (IL #3) for the win. Oak Park-River Forest to finish second.

 

Gus Scott Invitational – This two-day meet held at Wheaton-Warrenville South on Friday and then Naperville North on Saturday braved the cold on Friday night and then had some good sprint and jump performances on Saturday. Benet Academy had the top performance on Friday evening as they ran the top time in the state (9:39.68) to win the 4x800 Meter Relay ahead of Prospect’s 9:48.06 (IL #5) and Wheaton-Warrenville South’s 9:51.37 (IL #7). South’s Samantha Poglitsch put her team in contention on the second leg of the race coming from seventh place to third place running 63.4/2:16.9 on her leg.

 

Chase Burrell of Naperville North pulled away from teammate Gabe Ryan just after 1600-meters to run 9:31.14 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Ryan ran 9:44.59 to finish second. Tommy Paltzer of Naperville North ran 4:26.78 to win the 1600 Meter Run to win by 11 seconds ahead of teammate Nicholas Williams (4:37.59).

 

Riley Ammenhauser of Neuqua Valley was in the spotlight in the Saturday session of the meet. She headlined the meet by winning three events starting with a 41’ 2” jump to win the Triple Jump. It is the best jump currently in the state and ranks #2 nationally. Ammenhauser also had an 18’ 2” mark (IL #10) to win the Long Jump and ran 12.38 (IL #7) to win the 100 Meter Dash.

 

There were some good performances in Saturday’s relay events. Naperville Central’s Girls 4x200m Relay team ran 1:45.56 (IL #3) for the win ahead of Wheaton-Warrenville South (1:45.92, IL #4). Central’s quartet came back to run 4:08.83 (IL #5) to win the 4x400 Meter Relay. On Friday, Neuqua Valley ran 3:26.70 (IL #2) to win the 4x400 Meter Relay. Max Mitchell, who was part of Neuqua’s 4x4 relay on Friday, came back on Saturday to run 22.28 (IL #8) to win the 200 Meter Dash.

 

Robert Nihells Invitational – The Saturday meet at Lake Park was the first big meet of the season for one of the state’s top 3A teams Homewood-Flossmoor. Marshall Ellis led the way for the Vikings with a pair of wins. Ellis ran 10.99 (IL #5) to win the 100 Meter Dash. He came back later in the meet to run 22.57 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Ellis was also a part of Homewood-Flossmoor’s winning 4x100m Relay (43.47, IL #4).

 

Gabe Czako of Lockport was a double winner running 15.06 to win the 110 Meter Hurdles as well as running 50.71 (IL #8) to win the 400 Meter Dash.

 

Other Weekend Highlights

 

Kyle Burgoni of Tolono Unity had a big day Friday night at the Monticello Boys Invitational. Burgoni ran the state’s fastest time of 10.76 to win the 100 Meter Dash. He came back to run 21.86 (IL #2) in winning the 200 Meter Dash. At the same meet, CJ Shoaf of 14.45 (IL #2) to win the 110 Meter Hurdles. Shoaf also cleared 6’ 10” in winning the High Jump.

 

Jayden Ulrich of East Alton-Wood River achieved a personal best with the state’s best mark of 50’ 2” (US #3) to win the Shot Put at the Lady Knight Invitational. Julia Reglewski of Grayslake Central also showed improvement in that event with a personal best of 48’ 2.75” (IL #2, US #10) in a dual meet against North Chicago last Monday.

 

It was a good Saturday for Alexandria Johnson of Huntley at her home invitational. Johnson ran 12.31 (IL #5) in winning the 100 Meter Dash. Her best performance came in the Long Jump as she put up the state’s best jump of 19’ 4” to win the event.

 

Windsor Roberts of Tri-Valley continued her seasonal improvement in the Pole Vault. Roberts cleared 12’ 0” (IL #3) in a triangular meet at Deer Creek-Mackinaw on Thursday. Mia Morello of Grayslake Central also achieved a personal best of 11’ 7.75” (IL #4) in her home invite on Thursday. Ali Van Dyke of Lincoln-Way East cleared 11’ 5.75” (IL #5) in a dual meet against Lockport on Friday.

 

It was a state best for Annie Wirth of Geneseo as she cleared 5’ 8” on Friday in the High Jump at the Rock Island ABC Invitational.

 

Nathan Shapiro of Glenbrook South braved cold conditions at Friday’s Conant Gummerson Classic running 39.38 (IL #2) to win the 300 Meter Hurdles. Shapiro came back the next day at the DeerFIELD Spectacular at Deerfield HS to jump 23’ 3.5” (IL #2) to win the Long Jump.

 

Jayden McCulskie-Green of Sandwich jumped a personal best of 47’ 5” (IL #2) to win the Triple Jump at the D117 Co-Ed Wildcard Invitational Friday at Antioch.

 

Oswego, Waubonsie Valley, and DeKalb put up the top three times in the state in the Distance Medley Relay at Saturday’s Waubonsie Valley Invitational. Oswego was timed at 10:58.51 for the win four seconds ahead of host Waubonsie Valley (11:02.86). DeKalb ran 11:05.43 to finish third.

 

Eureka ran the fastest time in the state in the 4x200 Meter Relay (1:30.58) in a quad meet on Thursday.
