2021 Illinois High School Track & Field Boys Conference Meet Highlights

This week we head to Boys Sectional Meet competition. Before that, let’s look back at highlights of some of the 2021 Boys Conference Meets that have already taken place.
Southwest Prairie Conference Boys at Plainfield South – June 5
Minooka has the momentum heading into the state series after dominating their conference meet. The Indians scored 155 points for the win with Oswego second (107 points), Plainfield South third (84.5 points), Plainfield North fourth (83 points), and Yorkville fifth (80 points).
If there was one athlete that stood out above the rest, it had to be Minooka’s Tyler Colwell and what he did in this meet in the sprints. The junior was part of Minooka’s two winning relays that produced some of the top times in the state. Minooka ran 41.98 to win the 4x100m Relay with Plainfield North second (42.77). Minooka then ran 1:28.68 to win the 4x200m Relay by over three seconds ahead of Plainfield South (1:31.85) and Plainfield Central (1:32.01).
Then came Colwell in the individual events. The 100 Meter Dash was run with a huge tailwind at the athlete’s backs. Colwell took advantage of that running 10.48 (+2.8 m/s) to run the fastest time in the state this year under all-conditions. Six runners in that event went under 11 seconds. Colwell’s teammate Darren Anderson finished second (10.81). Brian Stanton of Plainfield South and Taofiq Shogbuyi of Romeoville running 10.84 finishing third and fourth. Andrew Garton of Yorkville (10.93) and Lavell Patterson of Plainfield North (10.97) finished fifth and sixth.
Colwell was on a hot streak and that continued to the 200 Meter Dash. He ran a personal best of 22.00 for the win with Stanton at 22.58 to finish second.
Ryan Maseman of Plainfield North ran a personal best of 49.85 to win the 400 Meter Dash ahead of Niko Schultz of Plainfield South (50.33) and his teammate Owen O’Shea (50.49). Collin Forrest of Minooka ran 15.19 to win the 110 High Hurdles. Jalyn Givan of Plainfield North won the 300 Meter Hurdles (40.74). Plainfield South won the 4x400m Relay (3:23.13) just 27 hundredth of a second ahead of Plainfield North (3:23.40).
Minooka won a close 4x800m Relay running 7:57.61. Plainfield North (8:00.41) and Yorkville (8:00.54) finished second and third. Vincent Van Eck of Minooka came back from that relay to run 1:56.47 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Daiveon Richardson from West Aurora (1:58.17) and Balin Doud of Oswego (1:59.08).
Four runners in the 1600 Meter Run went under 4:22 in that race. Nick Henz of Oswego East set a new personal best of 4:17.51 to win the 1600 Meter Run followed by Joliet West freshman Marcellus Mines (4:20.44) and the Yorkville duo of Austin Popplewell (4:21.37) and Ivan Westcott (4:21.40). Yorkville’s Colin Kachlic ran 9:43.91 to win the 3200 Meter Run.
Yorkville’s Kyle Clabough again ruled the throwing rings in this meet. The junior had a 161’ 1.75” best to win the Shot Put. He came back to throw 155’ 7” to win the Discus. Christian Sobecki of Oswego cleared a personal best of 14’ 7.25” to win the Pole Vault. Kacey Battle of Oswego East achieved a personal best of clearing 6’ 4.75” in winning the High Jump.
Oswego’s Caleb Wright jumped a personal best of 22’ 1.75” to win the Long Jump. Josh Pugh of Yorkville jumped a personal best of 45’ 10” to win the Triple Jump.
Chicago Catholic League Boys at Loyola Academy – June 4
Host Loyola Academy easily won the league title with 176.5 points finishing ahead of St. Ignatius Prep (92.5 points) and Marmion Academy (88 points). Nehemiah Ray of Brother Rice swept the three sprint races. Ray won the 100 Meter Dash running 11.34 into a -2.4 m/s headwind. Fenwick’s Jacque Walls (11.45) and Stephen Brown (11.47) finished second and third. Ray ran a personal best of 50.53 to win the 400 Meter Dash with Austin Cabanban of Loyola Academy (50.72) finishing second. Ray completed the triple when he ran 23.11 to win the 200 Meter Dash by four hundredth of a second ahead of Isaac Ray of St. Ignatius Prep.
Malcom Bevans of St. Ignatius Prep won both horizontal jumps. Bevans jumped 22’ 4.5” to win the Long Jump. Bevans came back to jump a personal best and state leading 47’ 11.25” to win the Triple Jump.
Jaden Blake of De La Sale cleared a personal best of 14’ 0” to win the Pole Vault. Spencer Werner of Loyola Academy ran a personal best of 4:24.03 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Fenwick’s Grayden Rill finished second (4:34.21).
Central Suburban League South Boys at Evanston – June 4
Glenbrook South scored 141 points to win the league divisional championship ahead of host Evanston Township (135 points) and New Trier (135 points). Kalil Johnson of Evanston Township readying himself for the upcoming sectional meet with a pair of strong races over the hurdles. Johnson ran 14.30 to win the 110 High Hurdles with teammate Aaron Hutchins his closest competition (15.86). Johnson ran a personal best of 38.60 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles by more than two seconds.
Glenbrook South was helped by wins on the track by Noah Shapiro who ran 11.05 to win the 100 Meter Dash and Brian Hiltebrand winning the 800 Meter Run (2:00.91). Ryan Faut of Glenbrook South achieved a personal best of 56’ 0.5” to win the Shot Put. Faut came back to throw 167’ 7” in winning the Discus.
Glenbrook South won both horizontal jump events. Ryan Schaefer jumped a personal best of 21’ 8.25” to win the Long Jump ahead of John Sassan of Maine South (21’ 6.75”). Stefan West jumped 43’ 6.5” to win the Triple Jump. Glenbrook South clinched the team title when they ran 3:33.00 to win the 4x400m Relay ahead of Niles West (3:33.41) and Evanston (3:34.33).
Charlie Siebert of New Trier ran 9:36.64 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Matt Coyle of Maine South (9:44.01). Nick Falk of New Trier ran 4:25.01 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Matt Cull of Maine South (4:26.27) and George Cahill of New Trier (4:27.70) following.
Central Suburban League North Boys at Vernon Hills – June 4
Deerfield won their divisional league title for the fourth straight year scoring 170 points. Vernon Hills (133 points) and Niles North (99 points) were next. Max Wilhelm of Deerfield ran 15.22 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 40.76 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles ahead of Vernon Hills’ Ryan Kim (40.99).
Hunter Matuch of Vernon Hills picked up wins in the Shot Put (52’ 8.25”) and the Discus (162’ 8”). Ryan Bernstein of Deerfield ran a close 1600 Meter Run (4:27.79) ahead of Jason Polydoris of Highland Park (4:29.16), Liam Perreault of Niles North (4:29.94), and Nate Wehner of Highland Park (4:30.30). Polydoris earlier in the meet ran 9:50.48 to win the 3200 Meter Run.
DuKane Conference Boys at St. Charles North – June 4
Batavia’s depth was the difference in this meet as they scored 164.5 points to win the conference title. Wheaton North finished second (98 points) ahead of St. Charles North (96 points), Lake Park (88 points), and Wheaton-Warrenville South (86.5 points).
Batavia had two multiple event winners in this meet. Jalen Buckley jumped a personal best of 22’ 9.5” to win the Long Jump with Desmond Horton of Lake Park finishing second (21’ 9.75”). Buckley jumped another personal best of 46’ 0.75” with Horton again finishing second (45’ 9.25”).
Anthony Bradley helped Batavia in winning two events. Bradley ran a personal best of 49.66 to win the 400 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Jacob Hohmann (50.60). Bradley came back to run 22.62 to win the 200 Meter Dash by seven hundredth of a second ahead of Reece Young of Wheaton-Warrenville South (22.69). Young earlier in the meet ran 11.14 to win the 100 Meter Dash with Bradley finishing second (11.38).
Batavia won the three sprint relays starting with a 42.89 win in the 4x100m Relay ahead of Wheaton North (43.27). The Bulldogs second win came when they ran 1:30.64 in the 4x200m Relay. Wheaton-Warrenville South finished second (1:31.10). Batavia ended the meet winning by four seconds in the 4x400m Relay with a 3:24.67 final time.
St. Charles East ruled the distance events winning all four events. The Saints ran 8:15.18 to win the 4x800m Relay by 10 seconds. Luke Schildmeyer ran under control pulling away in the final lap to run 9:46.82 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Batavia’s Ryan Mansour (9:48.79) and Carson Rewiski of Wheaton-Warrenville South (9:48.84).
It was Schildmeyer’s race in the 800 Meter Run that caught everyone’s attention. The senior ran a personal best of 1:54.28 t win the race with Ryan Schreiner of Wheaton North (1:57.37) and Jonah Fallon of Batavia (1:58.81) finishing second and third. Micah Wilson moved away in the final lap to win the 1600 Meter Run (4:21.51) with Ben Calusinski of Geneva second (4:22.74) and Connor Murphy of St. Charles East in third (4:27.39).
DuPage Valley Conference Boys at Metea Valley – June 4
Neuqua Valley repeated as conference champs scoring 137 points in windy conditions Friday afternoon. Naperville North (123 points), Naperville Central (94.5 points) and Waubonsie Valley (91 points) finished second through fourth.
Nico Dovalovsky of Neuqua Valley made his moves at the right time in winning his two distance events. The senior moved away in the final lap to win the 3200 Meter Run (9:25.02) ahead of Arthur Graham of Naperville Central (9:27.84) and Chase Burrell of Naperville North (9:30.80). The same held true in the 1600 Meter Run with Dovalovsky pulling away in the final lap to win the race in 4:17.31 with Tommy Paltzer of Naperville North (4:21.13) and Riley Newport of DeKalb (4:22.71) second and third. Austin Burke of Neuqua Valley pulled away in the final 50-meters to run 1:59.10 to win the 800 Meter Run just ahead of Julian Head of Naperville North (1:59.46).
Neuqua Valley had some great relay performances in winning all four relays. Neuqua Valley pulled away in the second half of the race to run 8:11.90 winning the race by 14 seconds. Max Mitchell anchored Neuqua Valley to run a season’s best of 42.37 to win the 4x100m Relay with Naperville North a close second (42.68). The Wildcats were in control running 1:29.43 to win the 4x200 Meter Relay. Neuqua Valley, without Mitchell in their lineup, still ran 3:23.69 to win the 4x400m Relay with Naperville Central finishing second (3:25.23).
Mitchell had a great meet winning two individual events. He pulled away in the final 100-meters to run 49.77 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Mitchell came back to run 21.87 into a headwind to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of DeMarrea Davis of DeKalb (22.26) and Andrew Li of Naperville North (22.32). Li ran 10.93 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Jamir Harris of Waubonsie Valley and Marion Taylor of DeKalb both ran 10.99 to finish second and third.
Great starts got wins for Jalen Johnson of Metea Valley in the two hurdle races. Johnson ran 14.76 running into a headwind to win the 110 High Hurdles ahead of Waubonsie Valley’s Sean Kirkwood. Johnson had a big lead with three hurdles left in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Kirkwood made a strong move down the homestretch but just missed getting Johnson at the end. Johnson ran 39.51 for the win just two hundredth of a second ahead of Kirkwood (39.53).
Sam Mika of Waubonsie Valley won the Shot Put (51’ 6”). Torriano Tate of DeKalb used a strong tailwind to help him to a 22’ 3.25” jump to win the Long Jump. James Ammenhauser of Neuqua Valley jumped 21’2.25” to finish second. Justin Gnade of Naperville North jumped 44’ 3.5” to win the Triple Jump with Ammenhauser again finishing second (43’ 5.75”).
Fox Valley Conference Boys at Prairie Ridge – June 4
Burlington Central scored 120 points to win the conference crown with Huntley finishing second (106 points). Jake Bowman of Burlington Central won both the Shot Put (53’ 11.75”) and the Discus (166’ 10”). Yusuf Baig of Burlington Central ran 9:53.80 to win the 3200 Meter Run. The junior came back to run 4:29.48 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Will Gelon of Prairie Ridge finishing second (4:31.70).
Evan Gronewold of Huntley was a double winner running 11.22 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 50.74 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Gronewold was also a part of his team’s winning 42.89 in the 4x100m Relay. Jacobs ran 1:30.02 to win the 4x200m Relay.
North Lake County Conference Boys at Antioch – June 4
Grayslake Central had a powerful meet winning the conference title with 167 points. Antioch scored 86.5 points to finish second. Marcus Mittelstadt of Grayslake Central was a double winner in this meet. He had a mark of 47’ 10.75” to win the Shot Put and a throw of 164’ 1” to win the Discus. Collin Kao of Lakes Community and Mittelstadt both cleared 14’ 6” in the Pole Vault. Kao won the event on fewer misses.
Javerius McGuinn of Wauconda had a big meet winning three individual events. The senior jumped a personal best of 21’ 7.5” to win the Long Jump. He won both the short sprints running 11.02 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 22.45 to win the 200 Meter Dash.
Round Lake’s Alejandro Gomez ran 15.73 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 41.92 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
South Seven Conference Boys at Carbondale – June 4
Marion edged Mt. Vernon 152-149 to win the conference title. Cahokia scored 87 points to finish third. Carbondale’s Jackson Grant won the Shot Put with a 53’ 3” put. He then thew 151’ 6” to win the Discus. Cahokia freshman Jo’vioni Howard cleared a personal best of 6’ 4” to win the High Jump. His teammate Nicholas Deloach jumped 43’ 10.75” to win the Triple Jump.
Marion ran 43.31 to win the 4x100m Relay. Bryson Wilson, who was on that relay, ran 51.20 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Tra’vion McKinney of Cahokia ran a personal best 11.03 to win the 100 Meter Dash.
Brooks Harlan of Centralia won two distance races a night after he ran 4:19 in the mile at Festival of Miles in St. Louis. Harlan ran under control to run 1:59.96 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Carbondale’s Alex Partlow (2:01.94). It was the same finish in the 1600 Meter Run with Harlan winning (4:27.48) ahead of Partlow (4:28.42).
Mt. Vernon’s Alec Sledge ran a personal best of 14.56 to win the 110 High Hurdles. Sledge came back to run 41.29 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
West Suburban Conference Gold Div. Boys at Downers Grove South – June 4
Willowbrook finishing second in the 4x400m Relay was enough to lock the Gold Division title in this conference meet. The Warriors scored 146 points to edge Downers Grove South wo scored 145.5 points.
Enrique Cruz helped in Willowbrook’s effort winning two events with two personal bests. Cruz had a 52’ 6.25” best to win the Shot Put. Cruz came back to throw 144’ 9” to win the Discus. Tyler King ran 1:59.35 to win the 800 Meter Run. King came back to finish second in the 1600 Meter Run behind race winner Joey Puccillo of Downers Grove South (4:35.63). Tim Neumann of Downers Grove South has missed most of this season due to an injury. He tuned up for next week’s sectionals running 9:41.11 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Julian Watson of Hinsdale South placing second (9:52.18).
Victor Rodriguez of Morton had a big meet clearing a personal best of 15’ 2.25” to win the Pole Vault.
Central State Eight Conference Boys at Springfield – June 3
Chatham-Glenwood tuned up for next week’s sectional meet by easily winning their conference with 192.5 points. Normal University (94 points), Springfield (92 points), and Rochester (90 points) finished second through fourth. The Titans used their depth along with winning 11 of 18 events in this meet.
The 100 Meter Dash was extremely close as Tierre Butler of Springfield Lanphier won in 11.17 and by just one hundredth of a second ahead of Chatham-Glenwood’s Qwinsuan Anderson (11.18). Anderson came back to win the 200 Meter Dash (22.70). Anderson was also a part of Glenwood’s relay that ran 43.57 to win the 4x100m Relay (43.57) ahead of Lanphier (44.06).
Aidan Peterson of Glenwood ran 10:00.33 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 22 seconds. Peterson followed that by running 4:33.51 to win the 1600 Meter Run finishing ahead of teammate Luke Birtch (4:41.82). Glenwood’s Adepoju Arogundale won both hurdle events starting with the 110 High Hurdles (15.12) and then coming back to run a personal best of 39.76 in winning the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Sacred Heart-Griffin’s Devin Hale won the Shot Put (47’ 11”) and the Discus (146’ 4”). Colton Naffziger of Normal University cleared 15’ 9” to win the Pole Vault. Lamar Manning of Lanphier and Troy Olson of Rochester both jumped 21’ 0” in the Long Jump. Manning won the conference title on a better second jump.
Mid-Illini Conference Boys at Dunlap – June 3
Metamora edged Bartonville Limestone 128-124 to claim the conference title. Pekin scored 115 points to finish third. Limestone’s Wilson Georges stood in the spotlight in this meet winning all three distance events. It came down to a kick in the 3200 Meter Run with Georges winning in 9:57.67 with Ian O’Laughlin of Metamora running 10:00.58) to finish second. The two runners faced off again in the 800 Meter Run with Georges winning again (1:56.94) ahead of O’Laughlin (1:59.31). Georges made it three for three when he ran 4:25.58 to win the 1600 Meter Run as O’Laughlin again finished in second (4:29.93).
Pekin’s Logan Buck ran 15.19 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 41.40 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles. Buck was also a part of Pekin’s team that ran 43.54 to win the 4x100m Relay just ahead of Limestone (43.68). Metamora won the conference title when they ran 3:32.67 to win the 4x400m Relay with Limestone finishing second (3:34.31).
North Suburban Conference Boys at Lake Zurich – June 3
Warren Township won the conference title with 111 points. Stevenson won the battle for second (93 points) with Lake Zurich (92 points), Libertyville (84 points), and Lake Forest (83 points) following.
The distance races stood out in this meet with some great performances and a Warren township sweep in the three races. Luke Wiley waited to the end before pulling away to win the 3200 Meter Run (10:00.57). The 800 Meter Run was perhaps the highlight of this meet as Griffin Pasha of Warren ran a personal best of 1:55.55 for the win with Jacob Myers of Lake Zurich (1:56.78) and Max Zeisler of Warren (1:59.24) also running personal bests.
Wiley was at his best in the 1600 Meter Run as he ran a PR 4:16.89 to win the race with Pasha running 4:20.85 to finish second. Myers ran 4:20.94 to finish third.
Lake Zurich’s Nicholas Soto ran 16.42 to win the 110 High Hurdles and then 42.27 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
West Suburban Conference Silver Div. Boys at Proviso West – June 2
This meet once again displayed why it is one of the toughest in the state Wednesday afternoon. Oak Park-River Forest held on to win the Divisional title with 115 points. Glenbard West was a close second scoring 112 points. York finished third with 89.5 points.
The distance races again shined in this distance heavy conference. Jocqael Thorpe ran a 1:53.7 anchor to take the lead on the final lap of the 4x800m Relay for Lyons Township. The Lions ran a state leading 7:52.55 to take the win. York, who did not have their full lineup on display for this meet, still ran 7:54.23 to finish second. Oak Park-River Forest (8:00.93), Hinsdale Central (8:02.54), Downers Grove North (8:05.63), and Glenbard West (8:06.07) rounded out this field all placing among the first 20 teams in the state.
Roy Llewellyn of Downers Grove North pulled away from the pack with three laps remaining won the 3200 Meter Run smashing his personal best by 24 seconds in running 9:26.77. Jeff Luka of York closed the gap on the final lap to place second (9:31.88).
Daniel Watcke stole the show in the 800 Meter Run. The Hinsdale Central sophomore stayed in the middle of the pack for the first lap, then broke away with 300-meters left to win the event (1:54.62) with three other runners under 1:57. Jocqael Thorpe came back from his leg in the 4x8 to run 1:55.96 to finish second followed by Colin Hill of York (1:56.30) and Tyler Yeager of Glenbard West (1:56.79).
Pierce Cousins of Glenbard West did not have his best race earlier in the meet in the 3200 Meter Run. Cousins bounced back in a big way to win the 1600 Meter Run taking the lead in the final lap of the race. Cousins ran a personal best of 4:21.76 to claim the win. Mickey Vreeland of York moved in the final 150 meters to finish second (4:22.96) ahead of Owen Hays of Lyons Township (4:23.67), Lou Delano of Oak Park-River Forest (4:24.00), and Ethan Summer of York (4:24.71).
Sean Hopkins of Glenbard West had a big meet winning three individual events. Hopkins jumped 22’ 0.25” to win the Long Jump. He came back to jump 45’ 3.75 to win the Triple Jump. On the track, he ran 10.84 to win the 100 Meter Dash with Nahlyee Bryant of Oak Park-River Forest a close second. The order changed in the 200 Meter Dash as Bryant caught Hopkins just at the finish to run 22.13 for the win. Hopkins (22.21) and his teammate Matthew Travers (22.33) finished second and third. Oak Park-River Forest had success in the sprint relays running 42.12 to win the 4x100m Relay winning by more than a second ahead of York (43.29). The Huskies came back to run 1:32.17 to win the 4x200m Relay. Hinsdale Central took the lead early in the 4x400m Relay. Watcke sealed the deal for the Red Devils running a 48.5 anchor leg to help his team win in 3:24.72 ahead of York (3:27.36). York’s Will Heuer earlier in the meet ran 50.19 to claim the win in the 400 Meter Dash.
Bryon Minor of Proviso West ran 15.39 to easily win the 110 High Hurdles. Tyler Vizgirda of Lyons Township made up his stagger halfway through his race to run 39.59 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Southwest Conference Boys at East St. Louis-Senior – June 2
Brandon Battle won three individual events and was a part of a winning relay to help Edwardsville win the conference championship with 183 points. East St. Louis-Senior (137 points), Collinsville (122 points), and O’Fallon (106 points) finished second through fourth.
Battle, one of the top sprinters in the state, anchored Edwardsville to the win in the 4x100m Relay (42.40) finishing ahead of East St. Louis-Senior (43.10) and Belleville West (43.54). Battle then ran 10.68 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of East St. Louis freshman Kenneth Buchanon who finished second (11.02). Battle won his second race in dominating the 400 Meter Dash running 48.56 and winning by three seconds. Battle’s final event was the 200 Meter Dash where he ran 21.78 for his third win. East St. Louis-Senior’’s Devonte Ford finished second with a 22.34 personal best.
Ford also had a fantastic meet. Ford ran a personal best of 14.16 to win the 110 High Hurdles by over a second. Ford came back to run the fastest time in the state (37.92) to win the 300 Meter Hurdles with O’Fallon’s Taylor Lehman running 40.21 to finish second. East St. louis-Senior also captured wins in the 4x200m Relay (1:30.45) and the 4x400m Relay (3:28.85) winning by more than a second ahead of Edwardsville (3:30.20).
Edwardsville’s Jordan Brooks jumped 43’ 6.75” to win the Triple Jump ahead of teammate Malik Allen (41’ 10.75”. Edwardsville also picked up wins in the 4x800m Relay (8:16.97), Geordan Patrylak in the 3200 Meter Run (9:56.43), and Ryan Luitjohan in the 1600 Meter Run (9:56.43).
The 800 Meter Run produced personal bests for the top five finishers. Byron Jones of Belleville East ran 1:56.56 to win the race ahead of Alex Tillock of O’Fallon (1:56.99) and Theo Paxton of Collinsville (1:58.62).
Mid Suburban League Championships at Conant – Jun 2
Barrington won the league championship Wednesday night scoring 170 points. Prospect (124 points) and Palatine (113 points) finished second and third. The star of this meet was Dominik Ball of Palatine. This freshman won three events in this championship with some outstanding performances. Ball ran a personal best of 10.96 to win the 100 Meter Dash with Fremd’s Will Stewart in second (11.06). The two athletes faced off again in the 200 Meter Dash with Ball again getting the win (22.62) ahead of Stewart (22.83). Ball’s third win came when he jumped 22’ 6.5” to win the Long Jump.
Barrington went under eight minutes for the first time this season as they ran 7:59.13 to win the 4x800m Relay with Prospect running a seasonal best of 8:01.88 to finish second. Prospect ran 43.32 to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of Hoffman Estates (43.42), Palatine (43.53), and Barrington (43.70).
Stephen Barretto of Rolling Meadows tuned up for the state series as he ran a personal best of 9:18.01 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Jack FitzPatrick of Barrington after running on his team’s 4x8 relay ran 4:23.08 to in the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Barretto (4:23.77) and Quinn Born of Hersey (4:24.29).
Big 12 Conference Boys at Champaign Centennial – June 2
Normal West took home conference bragging rights in this meet scoring 154 points to capture the conference crown ahead of host Champaign Centennial (72 points). Normal West three of the four relays including running 43.31 to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of Urbana (43.79) and 1:30.56 to win the 4x200m Relay.
Centennial’s Daniel Lacy was a double winner with a win in the 100 Meter Dash (11.02) and running a personal best of 50.52 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Normal West’s Jonovan Findley cleared 6’ 5.25” to win the High Jump. His teammate Leslie Fisher jumped 45’ 7.75” in winning the Triple Jump.
Alex Sohn of Normal Community had a personal best of 152 11” to win the Discus and a 56’ 2.5” mark to win the Shot Put. Bloomington went 1-2 in the Pole Vault with Liam McGill clearing 15’ 0” to finish ahead of teammate Tyler Peterson (13’ 2.5”).
Central Illinois Conference Boys at Shelbyville – June 2
Shelbyville won their conference title on their home track scoring 145.5 points. Tuscola (112 points) and Warrensburg-Latham (108 points) finished second and third. Double wins in this meet seemed to be rampant. Shayne Gillen of Warrensburg-Latham ran 11.50 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 23.67 to win the 200 Meter Dash by seven hundredth of a second ahead of St. Teresa’s Seth Baldwin. Shelbyville’s Phoenix Firnhaber took home wins in the 800 Meter Run (2:03.87) and then a personal best of 51.55 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Ethan Black of Clinton ran 10:31.73 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 4:41.99 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Firnhaber finished second (4:47.57) in that race.
East Suburban Catholic Conference Boys at Marist – June 2
Marist controlled this meet on their home track scoring 189 points for the conference title. Benet Academy (100 points) and St. Viator (92 points) finished second and third. Carter Auer of Marist was the only double winner in this meet jumping 40’ 3.75” to win the Triple Jump and clearing 5’ 9.75 in winning the High Jump. Jalen Burton of Carmel dipped under 11 seconds for the first time running a personal best of 10.98 to win the 100 Meter Dash.
Peter Walsdorf of Marian Central Catholic ran 9:40.04 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 17 seconds ahead of Marist’s Jake Phillips. Michael Schumacher of St. Viator ran 4:31.93 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Schumacher was also a part of the St. Viator quartet that ran 8:19.72 to win the 4x800m Relay.
Interstate Eight Conference Boys at Plano – June 2
Kaneland took home the conference title scoring 181 points for the win. Sycamore (158.5) and Sandwich finished second and third. Jayden McCulskie-Green of Sandwich jumped a seasonal best of 22’ 1.25” to win the Long Jump. The senior came back to jump 45’ 0.25” to also win the Triple Jump. Kaneland swept the Pole Vault with Ted Allen and Aiden Gatz both cleared 12’ 9.25” to finish first and second.
Michael Marrs of Sandwich ran 11.29 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 22.35 in winning the 200 Meter Dash. Tyler Carter of Sycamore was a double winner running 15.38 to win the 100 High Hurdles and a personal best of 40.33 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles. Sycamore won a close 4x100m Relay running 43.77 to edge Sandwich by six hundredth of a second. Ethan Weeks of Sandwich achieved a personal best of 147’ 3” to win the Discus.
Mississippi Valley Conference Boys at Triad – June 2
Mascoutah flexed their muscles preparing for the upcoming state series scoring a huge 205 points to win the conference title. Triad scored 138 points to finish second. Barry Evans of Mascoutah had another big meet in the ring. He achieved a personal best of 51’ 5” to win the Shot Put. He came back to throw 161’ 8.25” to also win the Discus.
Mascoutah won three of the four relays in this meet including running 43.23 to win the 4x100m Relay. Mascoutah also got wins from Chase Hanson in the Long Jump (20’ 6.75”) and Kai Toole with a personal best of 40’ 7.75” to win the Triple Jump.
CJ Edison of Triad ran a personal best of 10.99 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Mascoutah’s Nathan Hippard (11.06).
Southwest Suburban Conference Blue Div. Boys at Lockport – June 2
Homewood-Flossmoor held on to win the divisional title 104-101 over host Lockport. Lincoln-Way East scored 89 points to finish third. Homewood-Flossmoor put up some state best times in this meet. Their team in the 4x100m Relay ran a state leading 41.91 to win the event ahead of Lockport (43.23). The Vikings were even more impressive in the 4x200m Relay again running a state leading 1:28.81 to win the event by over five seconds.
Marshall Ellis, who anchored the 4x1 for Homewood-Flossmoor, put up some fast times in the sprints. Ellis ran a personal best of 10.74 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Kivan Bowers who also ran under 11 seconds (10.92). Ellis came back to run a seasonal best of 21.98 to win the 200 Meter Dash by over a second ahead of teammate Robert Scott III (22.90). Homewood-Flossmoor also received a 1-2 finish in the Long Jump. Jamar McMillian achieved a new personal best of 22’ 9.5” to claim the win with teammate Abdul-Karim Toheeb-Lawal jumping 22’ 0.25” to finish second.
Brett Wasick of Bolingbrook led four other runners under two minutes in the 800 Meter Run. Wasick ran a personal best of 1:56.09 for the win with Ismail Tineh of Sandburg (1:56.82) and Nolan Enright of Lincoln-Way East (1:58.06) close behind. Sandburg took the first four places in the 1600 Meter Run with Griffin Lehnhardt claiming the win (4:26.80) ahead of teammate Declan Tunney (4:29.18). Sandburg’s Brock Rice ran 9:32.26 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Nolan Rogers of Lincoln-Way East finishing second (9:39.95).
Arni Grunert of Lincoln-Way East achieved a personal best of 14’ 9.25” to win the Pole Vault. His teammate Peter Weygandt cleared 6’2.75” to win the High Jump.
Southwest Suburban Conference Red Div. Boys at Lincoln-Way Central – June 2
Andrew won the Red Divisional championship in this conference with 110 points with Lincoln-Way Central scoring 82 points to finish second.
Nathan Domont of Bradley-Bourbonnais swept the sprints running 11.09 to win the 100 Meter Dash and then 22.98 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Justin Cronk of Lincoln-Way West threw a persona best of 149’ 6 to win the Discus. Stevan Radosavljevic had a 47’ 4” meet best in the Shot Put to win that event.
Western Big Six Conference Boys at Rock Island – June 2
Moline claimed the conference team title scoring 144 points. Rock Island (121 points) and Quincy (111 points) finished second and third.
Quincy had three athletes that won multiple events in this meet. Jettason Rose ran a big personal best of 10.76 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of East Moline’s Derrick Turner (11.02) and Darrell Woodson of Rock Island (11.06) finished second and third. Rose came back with another personal best (22.20) to win the 200 Meter Dash with Woodson at 22.66 finishing second.
Fiker Rosen of Quincy won both distance races. He pulled away to run 9:54.74 to win the 3200 Meter Run. The junior came back to run 4:34.94 to edge Sterling’s Dale Johnson (4:35.31) to win the 1600 Meter Run. Logan Veloz of East Moline ran 1:58.54 to win the 800 Meter Run.
Moline ran 42.87 to win the 4x100m Relay. The Maroons ended the meet by running 3:29.08 to win the 4x400m Relay. Quincy’s LaMarrio Rodgers claimed wins in the Shot Put (47’ 2.25”) and the Discus (137’ 10”).
Illinois Prairie Conference Boys at Bloomington Central Catholic – June 1
Monticello used five event wins along with scoring in 14 of 18 events earned them the conference win with 150 points. St. Joseph-Ogden (107 points), Stanford Olympia (88.5 points), and Pontiac (86 points) were the next three teams. Monticello used relay wins at the beginning in the 4x100m Relay (43.78) and in the end of the meet in the 4x400m Relay (3:40.37).
Kolton Knuffman helped in the Monticello win with a pair of wins. The Sages’ senior ran 16.09 to capture the win in the 110 High Hurdles. Knuffman came back to run 42.37 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles by more than two seconds. Hayden Knott of St. Joseph-Ogden prepared himself for the sectional meets next week with wins in the weight events. Knott started with a 53’ 0.25” best to win the Shot Put almost three feet ahead of second place finisher David Russell of Illinois Valley Central. Knott also won the Discus with a 168’ 2” throw.
Stanford Olympia dominated the distances winning all four events. Their relay quartet started things up for the Spartans by running 8:34.00 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Monticello (8:39.07). Charlie Kistner won two events in his final conference meet. The senior ran 10:23.95 to win the 3200 Meter Run. He came back to run 4:38.10 to capture the title in the 1600 Meter Run with Brandon Mattsey of St. Joseph-Ogden finishing second (4:47.44). Olympia finished 1-2 in the 800 Meter Run as Owen Dare took the win (2:02.01) with his teammate Brad Schardan next across the line (2:02.45).
One of the top sprinters in the state Kyle Burgoni of Tolono Unity ran in only two of the four events that he was scheduled to compete in. Burgoni anchored his team’s quartet that finished fourth in the 4x100m Relay. Burgoni ran 11.26 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Monticello’s Chris Brown (11.34) and Jacob Tackett (11.38). Burgoni scratched out of the 400 Meter Dash and 200 Meter Dash.
Cahokia Conference Boys at Columbia – June 1, 2021
A win in the 4x400m by Freeburg gave them the conference title with 117 points ahead of Breese Central (112 points) and Salem (106 points). Freeburg ran 3:36.67 in that relay for the win ahead of Trenton-Wesclin (3:39.45), Salem (3:41.84), and Breese Central (3:42.89).
Luke Hatten of Lebanon tuned up for next week’s sectional meet with a pair of wins in the weight events. Hatten had a 55’ 8” mark to win the Shot Put. The senior came back to throw 163’ 5 to win the Discus by over 27 feet. Marcus Price of Breese Central won a talented 400 Meter Dash (50.79) to finish ahead of Daniel Jansen of Okawville (51.46) and Aaron Bouas of Freeburg (51.95).
Justin Mumford of Trenton-Wesclin had a busy day winning two events as well as being a part of his team’s 4x400m Relay. Munford anchored his team to the win in the 4x800m Relay (8:29.27). Mumford was in control in winning the 1600 Meter Run (4:26.16) by 23 seconds ahead of Freeburg’s Evan Wilkerson.
Kishwaukee River Conference Boys at Woodstock North– June 1
Seven points separated the first three teams in this conference meet. Marengo took home the conference title (135 points) with Woodstock (130 points) and Richmond-Burton (128 points) finishing second and third. Marengo was led by wins from Jonah Pace in the Shot Put (45’ 0.5”), Cole Davis in the 100 Meter Dash (11.69), Zach Secor in the 1600 Meter Run (4:41.42), and Luke Chaffin in the 3200 Meter Run (10:00.87). Marengo started the meet by running 8:33.67 to win the 4x800m Relay and then 44.79 to win the 4x100m finishing just ahead of Woodstock North (44.97).
Tim Maidment of Woodstock was the only individual double winner in this meet. The junior jumped 20’ 3.25” to win the Long Jump. He came back to run 23.43 in winning the 200 Meter Dash.
Chicago Public League Boys at Lane Tech – May 29
Lane Tech was dominant in this meet winning 9 of the 18 scored events and scoring 159 points to win the Chicago City Championship. Taft scored 94.5 points to finish second ahead of Jones Prep and their 54 points.
Juan Manaog paced Lane Tech with his three individual event sprint wins. His first actual race was in the 4x100m Relay where he was part of the quartet that ran 44.23 for the win. He then ran 11.36 (into a -3.6 m/s headwind) to win the 100 Meter Dash. The senior then ran 51.06 to in the 400 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Jaylin Jones (51.99). The headwind was just as strong in the 200 Meter Dash, but Manaog prevailed with his fourth win of the day (23.33) ahead of John Green of Agricultural Science.
Andy Niser of Jones Prep ran 9:36.42 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 23 seconds ahead of teammate Luke Benes. It was closer in the 1600 Meter Run, but Niser ran 4:29.35 for the win with Kevin Gee of Mather close running 4:29.59 to finish second. Lucas Guidone of Taft ran 2:01.57 to win the 800 Meter Run with his teammate Michael Polizzi at 2:02.67 in second.
Lane Tech was also pushed by a double win in the weight events from Stevan Kamatovic. The senior achieved two personal bests with a 44’ 7.5” mark to win the Shot Put and a 127’ 6” throw to win the Discus. Travon Phillips of Uplift was a double winner clearing 5’ 8” to win the High Jump and a 20’ 6.75” best in winning the Long Jump.
South Central Conference Boys at Pana – May 27
Carlinville had the edge in this conference meet scoring 122 points for the title. Litchfield (108 points) edged Roxana (02 points for second place. Cameron Crow of Litchfield had a unique double win in this meet. The junior cleared 6’ 1.5” to win the High Jump. Crow came back to run 51.99 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Dustin Roberts of Carlinville cleared 13’ 5.75” to win the Pole Vault. Will Carlisle of Litchfield cleared 13’ 0” to finish second. Camden Quarton was the meet’s other double winner. The Litchfield freshman won the 3200 Meter Run (10:56.01) and the 1600 Meter Run (4:44.17)
Sangamo Conference Boys at Maroa-Forsyth – May 26
Ben Gilbert was a part of four event wins to help Maroa-Forsyth win the conference title with 114 points ahead of Williamsville’s 101-point total. Pleasant Plains (81 points) edged Auburn by one point for third.
Gilbert ran a personal best of 11.16 to win the 100 Meter Dash. The senior came back to run 22.58 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Gilbert was also a part of two Maroa-Forsyth relays. He was part of the quartet that ran 44.02 to win the 4x100m Relay. Maroa’s quartet ran 1:32.44 to win the 4x200m Relay by more than three seconds.
Athens’ Brian Lindsay cleared 5’ 11.75” to win the High Jump and jumped 42’ 3.50” to win the Triple Jump. Jackson Kern of Auburn ran 15.81 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 42.29 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Brock Richards of Maroa-Forsyth ruled the distance races in this meet. His time of 10:35.47 was good enough to win the 200 Meter Run ahead of Petersburg PORTA’s Haven Gronewold (10:41.69. Richards came back to run 4:44.96 to win the 1600 Meter Run.
Southland Athletic Conference Boys at Kankakee – May 24
Strong headwinds slowed down the sprint times in this meet. Crete-Monee came away with the team title (120 points) followed by Kankakee (91 points) and Bloom Township (83 points). Joshua Washington of Thornton won both the High Jump (6’ 2”) and the Long Jump (21’ 5.75”). His teammate Javaris Ambrose took home top honors in both weight events. His mark of 47’ 11.5” won him the Shot Put. He also threw 134’ 8” to win the Discus.
Aaron Terrell of Thornwood was the only double winner on the track. The senior ran 2:01.10 to edge his teammate Michael Somerville (2:01.46) in winning the 800 Meter Run. It was also close in the 400 Meter Dash as Terrell ran 51.25 to edge Kankakee freshman Jayon Morrow (51.34) for the win.
The sprint relays also had a resemblance of closeness. Kankakee edged Crete-Monee by three hundredths of a second in winning the 4x100m Relay. Kankakee’s winning time was 43.75. Bloom Township had the advantage in the 4x200m Relay running 1:33.69 for the win ahead of Crete-Monee’s 1:33.85 time.
Apollo Conference Boys at Mt. Zion – May 20
The earliest of the Boys Conference Meets. Mt. Zion won on their home track with 127 points. Mahomet-Seymour (106 points) and Lincoln (80 points) finished second and third. The spotlight was on CJ Shoaf of Mahomet-Seymour in this meet winning three individual events. Shoaf cleared 6’ 6” to win the High Jump. He was the only athlete to clear over 6’ in this meet. The Mahomet senior was also in charge in the hurdle events running 14.16 to win the 110 High Hurdles and then 39.56 in winning the 300 Meter Hurdles. Shoaf is currently the top ranked athlete in Class 2A in the 110 Highs and the High Jump as well as being ranked #2 in the 300 Hurdles.
Mt. Zion’s Christian Keyhea won both the 100 Meter Dash (10.92) and the 200 Meter Dash (22.56). Chris Cherry of Taylorville was also a double winner running 9:37.77 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 28 seconds and then 4:22.86 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Charleston’s Wyatt Strader jumped 40’ 1” to win the Triple Jump and had a 21’ 0.25” mark to win the Long Jump.
