Here is a look at each of the 2A Girls Sectional Meets that took place from June 2 to June 4.
2A Chicago (Latin School) Sectional – June 3
Latin School put themselves in position to win the state team championship at this sectional at Hope Academy. The Romans advanced 16 (14 Individuals, 2 Relays) to Charleston scoring 179 points.
The success of Latin School will fall on the legs of two athletes, Marianne Mihas and Ava Parekh, that qualified in four individual events. Mihas anchored her team’s quartet that ran 9:42.42 to win the 4x800m Relay 43 seconds ahead of Payton.
Both athletes won two individual events. Parekh ran 11:11.81 and pulled along teammate Olivia Syftestad to a personal best of 11:17.88 to finish first and second in the 3200 Meter Run. Mihas ran 2:18.26 and Parekh ran 2:18.68 and where ahead of the field by 20 seconds in going 1-2 in the 800 Meter Run.
Mihas followed that up by running 58.64 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Parekh came back in a fast 1600 Meter Run running 4:58.07 for the win. Elia Ton-That of Northside Prep (5:03.00) and Bea Parr of Latin School (5:13.85) also were under the state qualifying standards. Parekh and Mihas were part of the quartet that ran 4:09.03 to win the 4x400m Relay.
Payton’s Hana Ling won the 100 Meter Hurdles (17.92), the 300 Meter Hurdles (50.42), the Long Jump (16’ 4.5”) and the 200 Meter Dash (28.18). Westinghouse Prep’s freshman Lamonyca Bryant won the 100 Meter Dash (12.39).
Phillips ran 52.86 to win the 4x100m Relay with Westinghouse lacing second (53.02). De La Salle ran 1:56.32 in winning the 4x200m Relay. Phillips finished second (1:57.97).
Alice Mihas of Latin School was a double winner in the Shot Put (38’ 8.25”) and the Discus (107’ 7”). Other field event winners included Sabrina Hayes of Latin School in the Triple Jump (30’ 5”), Latin School’s Josephine Daab in the Pole Vault (7’ 11.25”), and Izzy Oberman of Latin School in the High Jump (4’ 8.25”).
2A Geneseo Sectional – June 3
Geneseo will be a team to watch in next week’s 2A Team finals. The Maple Leafs advanced 13 (10 Individuals, 3 Relays) to state in winning their own sectional with 160 points. Galena (COOP) was next with 115 points.
Annie Wirth led Geneseo with wins in the High Jump (5’ 4.5”) and the Long Jump (18’ 6.5”). Ali Rapps of Geneseo also picked up two wins on the track. Rapps ran 15.36 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles by almost a second. Her margin of victory in the 300 Meter Hurdles was more than three seconds as she ran 46.31. Rapps and Wirth were part of Geneseo’s team that ran 4:04.65 to win the 4x400m Relay.
Geneseo won two of the other three relays running 10:08.70 to win the 4x800m Relay and 1:46.74 to win the 4x200m Relay. Galena picked up the other relay win running 50.46 to win the 4x100m Relay with Morris finishing second (51.92).
Galena’s Haley Heiar easily won the 3200 Meter Run (11:29.03) by 80 seconds. The sophomore came back to run 5:26.15 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of second-place Kylie Nicklaus of Sterling (5:42.03). Heair’s teammate Julia Finazzo was a double winner running 12.79 in the 100 Meter Dash and 26.72 in winning the 200 Meter Dash. Riley Finn made it a Galena sprint sweep running 1:00.11 to win the 400 Meter Dash.
Tori Thomas of Alleman tuned up for next week’s state meet only clearing 12’2.75 to win the Pole Vault. Geneseo’s Evie Wilson finished second (10’ 9.25”). Alleman’s Caroline Adam won the 800 Meter Run (2:27.07) with Geneseo’s Esther Brown finishing second (2:28.52).
Lane Krohe of Streator achieved a personal best of 39’ 9.25” to win the Shot Put. Ryley Huston of Monmouth-Roseville had a 39’ 6.5” put to finish second. Olivia Marshall of Geneseo threw 106’ 2” to win the Discus. Emily Strehl of LaSalle-Peru won the Triple Jump with a personal best of 34’ 7.75”.
2A Mt. Zion Sectional – June 3
Host Mt. Zion will send 15 (11 Individuals, 4 relays to Charleston in winning their sectional with 161 points. Tolono Unity (129 points) and Monticello (105 points) finished second and third.
Mt. Zion had two athletes that won multiple events. Sara Addai had a big meet winning three events. The senior started by running 12.88 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Charleston’s Makenna McBride (13.14). Addai ran a seasonal best of 57.57 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Her third win came in running 26.10 in the 200 Meter Dash. Mt. Zion’s second athlete was Morgan Pilate who also won three events. Pilate won the Long Jump (17’ 0.75”), the Triple Jump (35’ 8”), and the 100 Meter Hurdles (15.37). Alaina Barr of Mt. Zion ran a personal best of 49.64 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Mabry Bruhn of Monticello won three events with an unusual triple. Bruhn ran 11:19.64 to win the 3200 Meter Run with teammate Estella Miller finishing second (11:30.40). The two runners finished 1-2 in the 1600 Meter Run with Bruhn getting the win (5:13.19) ahead of Miller (5:17.31). Her third win came when she cleared a personal best of 10’ 3.25” in the Pole Vault. Bruhn was also a part of the winning quartet from Monticello that ran 4:09.86 to win the 4x400m Relay with Tolono Unity placing second (4:13.33).
Megan Garrett of Charleston ran a personal best of 2:14.18 to win the 800 Meter Run with Rachel Koon of Monticello in second (2:21.33). Tolono Unity ran 9:57.87 to win the 4x800 Meter Relay ahead of Monticello (10:00.50) and Mt. Zion (10:07.99). Tolono Unity also captured wins in the 4x100m Relay (50.68) with Mt. Zion a close second (50.72), and then running 1:49.87 to win the 4x200m Relay with Mt. Zion placing second (1:50.26).
Shelby Rieman of Effingham won the High Jump (5’ 2.25”). Maya Cook of Mattoon had a 35’ 0.75” meet best to win the Shot Put. Gracie Cox of Tolono Unity threw a personal best of 140’ 4” to win the Discus.
2A Plano Sectional – June 3
Rosary and Burlington Central set themselves up to challenge for a team trophy at state with great performances at this meet Thursday evening. Rosary won the team title (152 points) advancing 13 (10 Individuals, 3 Relays) to Charleston. Burlington Central finished second (140.5 points) advancing 11 (7 Individuals, 4 Relays) to next week’s state finals.
Brooke Barkocy of Burlington Central had a banner meet running the fastest Class 2A times in both of her hurdle races. Barkocy ran a personal best of 14.75 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles with Rosary’s Ann Molenhouse finishing second (16.00). Barkocy returned to run another personal best of 44.96 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles with Molenhouse again finishing second (47.12). Barkocy was also a part of her team’s quartet that ran 4:05.17 to finish second in the 4x400m Relay behind Rosary’s 4:04.58 winning time.
Rosary’s Lianna Surtz also had a busy meet running in part of that relay while winning two distance events. The junior started by running 11:20.34 to win the 3200 Meter Run as Dixon freshman Emma Smith ran 11:50.03 to finish second. Surtz completed the distance double running 5:18.28 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Dixon’s Jade Miller finished second (5:26.01). Rosary went 1-2 in the 800 Meter Run with Maia Italia running 2:23.69 for the win with teammate Olivia Kunio finishing second (2:24.63).
Maggie Dervis of Aurora Central Catholic will be a factor in Charleston next week as she won all three sprint individual events. Dervis started by winning the 100 Meter Dash (12.63) with Burlington Central’s Fiona Pedone placing second (12.77). Dervis’ second win came when she ran 58.54 to win the 400 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Isabella Orozco (1:00.30). The senior completed her trifecta by running 25.91 to win the 200 Meter Dash.
Claire Allen of Sandwich won the Shot Put with a personal best of 40’ 9.75”. Carolina Hintz of Burlington Central finished second (36’ 7.75”). The order switched in the Discus as Hintz threw 137’11” for the win ahead of Allen (131’ 2”).
Rosary’s Lauren Roskuszka jumped 17’ 5” to win the Long Jump with Pedone jumping 16’ 11.25” to finish second. Roskuszka and Molenhouse gave Rosary a 1-2 finish in the Triple. Both athletes had 35’ 5.25” bests. Roskuszka won on a better second jump. Karissa Clawson of Sycamore cleared 5’ 1.75 to win the High Jump. Rosary’s Libby Saloga won the Pole Vault (11’ 2.75”).
2A Salem Sectional – June 3
Mascoutah advanced 10 (6 Individuals, 4 Relays) to next Friday’s State Finals by easily winning this sectional with 120 points. Cahokia (67 points) and Marion (64.5 points) finished second and third.
Mascoutah qualified all four of their relays winning two of them. The Indians ran 10:12.68 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Carbondale (10:15.31) and Benton (10:21.66). Mascoutah ran 4:15.29 in their 4x400m Relay win with Cahokia (4:16.81) and Waterloo (4:17.17) second and third. Cahokia ran 50.59 to win the 4x100m Relay with Mascoutah (50.85) placing second. Marion (1:48.02) won the 4x200m Relay with Mascoutah (1:49.76) also qualifying.
Abby Venhaus of Columbia won three individual events. The sophomore jumped a personal best of 18’ 0.5” to win the Long Jump. Kylie Gormann of Centralia jumped 17’ 11.25” to finish second. Gormann came back to jump 36’ 9.25” to win the Triple Jump. Venhaus won the 100 Meter Dash (12.72) by four hundredths of a second ahead of Janae Maxwell of Marion (12.76). Venhaus’ third win came when she ran 26.10 to win the 200 Meter Dash with Keymora Hayes of Cahokia finishing second.
Vashanti Reynolds of Cahokia won both the 100 Meter Hurdles (15.89) and the 300 Meter Hurdles (47.43). Megan Weilmuenster of Freeburg finished second in both events.
Angelynn Kanyuck of Waterloo won the 3200 Meter Run (11:56.92) ahead of teammate Danielle Mudd of Waterloo (12:03.44). Brodie Denny of Anna-Jonesboro ran 5:33.38 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Kanyuck qualified for her second event by finishing second (5:37.50). Ansley Bailey of Massac County ran a personal best of 2:20.38 to win the 800 Meter Run. Denny made it in this evet placing second (2:22.34). Mascoutah’s Jayda Williams ran 59.80 in winning the 400 Meter Dash ahead of Bailey’s 1:01.60 state qualifying time.
Katarina Schneider of Mascoutah cleared a personal best of 11’ 0” to win the Pole Vault ahead of teammate Olivia Lee (10’ 9.25”). Waterloo’s Molly Grohmann cleared a personal best of 5’ 5” to win the High Jump and will be an athlete to watch for next week. Maryiah Menicucci won the Shot Put (38’ 10.5”). Mascoutah’s Elizabeth Woodruff had a 114’ 8” throw to win the Discus.
2A Chicago (South Shore International) Sectional – June 2
Host South Shore International won their own sectional Wednesday at Hope Academy. South Shore qualified 10 (9 Individuals, 1 Relay) to next Friday’s state meet in winning with 106 points. Providence Catholic was a close second with 103 points.
South Shore’s Jordan Marshall had a big meet winning four individual events. Marshall jumped a personal best of 17’ 5.75” to win the Long Jump and 36’ 8.5” to win the Triple Jump. On the track, Marshall ran 16.86 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles and 50.14 in winning the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Jamaya Jenkins of South Shore ran 12.36 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Jenkins was a part of South Shore’s quartet that ran 51.38 to win the 4x100m Relay with Evergreen Park placing second (51.88). Maria Rodriguez of Marian Catholic, who had qualified in the 100 Meter Dash earlier, ran 26.14 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of South Shore’s Kaylen Pryor (26.39). Pryor ran 1:00.47 to win the 400 Meter Dash.
Providence Catholic’s Gabby Yaccino was a double winner in the Shot Put (35’ 6.5”) and the Discus (106’ 8”). Natalie Papes of Providence cleared 10’ 6” in winning the Pole Vault. Akira Fort of Evergreen Park cleared 4’ 11.5” to win the High Jump.
Distance event winners included Caitlin Bitunjac of Agricultural Science in the 3200 Meter Run (13:06.21), Bella Morey of Providence in the 800 Meter Run (2:43.40), and Claire Blotnik of Joliet Catholic in the 1600 Meter Run (5:56.03).
Joliet Catholic won the 4x800m Relay (10:44.36) and Providence won the 4x200m Relay (1:50.48) ahead of Evergreen Park (1:51.03). Evergreen Park did run 4:22.58 to win the 4x400m Relay with Providence placing second (4:24.50).
2A Kankakee Sectional – June 2
Normal University qualified 14 (10 individuals, 4 relays) to next Friday’s State Finals in winning this sectional with 130 points. Eureka was close as they scored 122 points to finish second. The Hornets advanced 11 (9 Individuals, 2 Relays) to Charleston. Kankakee scored 107 points to finish third.
The distance events shined in this meet. Anna Perry of Eureka picked up a double win starting by running a controlled 11:08.60 in winning the 3200 Meter Run. Perry won by 73 seconds ahead of Mahomet-Seymour’s Elizabeth Sims. Perry came back to run 5:14.46 in winning the 1600 Meter Run ahead of teammate Alexi Fogo (5:21.55) and Normal University’s Lizzy Zacharias (5:23.23) who both qualified for state.
Trixie Johnson of Paxton-Buckley-Loda won the 800 Meter Run (2:22.13) ahead of Eureka’s Elle Knapp. Eureka, with Knapp and Fogo part of the quartet, ran 9:55.60 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Normal University (10:17.06).
Normal University swept the three sprint events. Anna Barr ran 12.22 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of state qualifiers Nevaeh Love of Kankakee (12.30) and U-High’s Reese Mitchell. The order was the same in the 200 Meter Dash as Barr ran 25.53 for her second win. Lowe finished second (25.71. Mitchell finished third (26.18) but missed the qualifying standard by five hundredths of a second. Mitchell qualified in the 400 Meter Dash by winning in 1:01.17 finishing ahead of Sophie Kaufman of Eureka (1:02.83).
Brianna Dixon of Rantoul won two events running 14.53 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles for starters. Barr qualified for her third event by finishing second (15.18 in this event. Dixon cleared 5’ 3” to win the High Jump. Kankakee freshman Na’Kyrah Cooks won both the Long Jump (16’ 11.25) and the Triple Jump (33’ 9”).
Five athletes qualified for the state meet in the Pole Vault led by auto qualifiers Sawyer Schoon (11-3) and Lindsay Shouse (10’ 9.25) of Normal University. Shaelin Ruzich of Mahomet-Seymour (10’ 9.25”), Allison Schrock of Eureka (10’ 2.75), and Cece Abramson of Mahomet-Seymour (9’ 9”) also qualified.
Micah Thomas of Kankakee won the Shot Put (35’ 10”). Ashley Leman of Eureka threw 106’ 2”) to win the Discus. Ruzich qualified in her second event when she ran 50.20 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Kankakee ran the fastest 2A sectional time (50.03) to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of Normal University (50.61). Kankakee ran 1:46.46 to win their second race in winning the 4x200m relay. Normal University again finished second (1:47.21). Eureka ran 4:15.35 to win the 4x40m Relay.
2A Macomb Sectional – June 2
Metamora scored 91.5 points to win this sectional ahead of Dunlap (89 points) and Morton (83.5 points). Metamora advanced nine (5 Individuals, 4 Relays) to next Friday’s state meet.
There were two athletes that won three individual events in this meet.
Laura Doerr of Morton jumped 18” 0.25” to win the Long Jump. Doerr ran 12.41 to win the 100 Meter Dash as Harper Smith of Dunlap finished second (12.91). Doerr’s third win came when she ran 25.47 to capture the 200 Meter Dash crown by more than a second ahead of Smith. Doerr will be one of the favorites in all three of these events next week.
Katie Goldring of Canton was the second three event winner. The senior cleared 5’ 2.5” to win the High Jump. She went to the track where she ran 15.80 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles and 47.68 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.
Lincoln freshman Becca Heitzig won two distance events. She started by running 2:15.56 to win the 800 Meter Run by eight seconds ahead of East Peoria’s Kerrigan Vandel. Heitzig then ran 5:18.96 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Savannah Beavers of Olympia finishing second (5:20.93). Beavers earlier in the meet ran 11:16.51 to win the 3200 Meter Run.
Kyleigh Diggs of Macomb won the 400 Meter Dash (1:02.30). Metamora swept the two weight events as Samantha Dodwell had a 38’ 1” mark to win the Shot Put and Danielle Dominy threw 107’ 11” to win the Discus. Chelsea Wetzel of Dunlap cleared 10’8 to win the Pole Vault. Reese McCuan of Lincoln jumped 35’ 6.5” to win the Triple Jump.
Three teams went under 10 minutes in the 4x800m Relay. Peoria Notre Dame claimed the win in this race (9:52.58) ahead of Metamora (9:55.86) and Morton (9:58.49). Metamora ran 50.27 to win the 4x100m Relay edging Peoria Richwoods by three hundredths of a second. Three teams finished within a second of each other in the 4x200m Relay. Peoria Richwoods claimed the win (1:45.77) ahead of Peoria Notre Dame (1:46.09) and Metamora. Notre Dame claimed the win in the 4x400m Relay (4:09.01) finishing ahead of Metamora (4:14.12).
2A Mundelein (Carmel) Sectional – June 2
Woodstock Marian won the team championship at this sectional with 107 points qualifying nine (7 Individuals, 2 Relays) to Charleston. Host Carmel Catholic was their closest competition scoring 95 points.
We will be seeing a lot of Dominique Thomas of Marian Central Catholic in next week’s state meet as she won two individual events and was on two of her team’s qualifying relays. Thomas ran 12.30 to win the 100 Meter Dash with Emmi Scales of St. Viator finishing second (12.69). Thomas’ 200 Meter Dash was amazing. She ran in Lane 8 in the first section of the event and ended up running the fastest time of the day (25.66) in her win. Scales again finishing second (26.13) with a personal best.
Thomas anchored Marian’s quartet to a win in the 4x100m Relay (50.29) with Carmel next at 51.06. The tables turned in the 4x200m Relay with Carmel winning (1:47.39) ahead of Marian (1:47.70).
The best performance of this meet came from Mary Grace Hegberg of St. Viator running some fantastic times in two races. Hegberg started running the fastest Class 2A time in the state (10:34.96) in winning the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Grace Hartzer of Carmel by almost two minutes (12:15.17). Hegberg came back in another solo effort running her second personal best of the meet (4:56.88) in winning the 1600 Meter Run with Hartzer again finishing second (5:48.40).
The winners in the field events included Hallie Steponaitis clearing 5’ 4.5” to win the High Jump, Abby Perkins of Harvard clearing 8’ 11.75” to win the Pole Vault, Cayla Hertzog in the Discus (103’ 4”), Madelyn Bishop of Rockford Boylan in the Shot Put (34’ 4.25”) with Hertzog finishing second, Bella Zecchin of Marian Central Catholic in the Long Jump (16’ 6.75”), and Katherine Strode of Marian Central Catholic in the Triple Jump (34’ 11”).
Jillian Meyer of Johnsburg ran 17.79 to win the 100 Meter Hurdles with Courtney Sensabaugh of Marian Central Catholic finishing second (18.00). Sensabaugh came back to run 51.19 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles just 12 hundredths a second ahead of Audrey Baird of Harvard.
Carmel took the top two spots in the 800 Meter Run. Hannah Arends ran 2:35.24 for the win with teammate Maddie Ives finishing second (2:35.44). Megan Kalma of Rockford Boylan won the 400 Meter Dash (1:00.63). Carmel started and ended the meet with relay wins. Carmel ran 10:38.40 to win the 4x800m Relay two seconds ahead of Rockford Boylan (10:40.78). Carmel then ran 4:16.61 to win the 4x400m Relay with Harvard finishing second (4:19.31).
2A Wood River (East Alton-W.R.) Sectional – June 4
Troy Triad won the Sectional Team title with 97 points finishing ahead of East St. Louis-Senior (88 points) and Highland (78 points). Jayden Ulrich of East Alton-Wood River won the two weight events in her final time competing in home ring. Ulrich won the Shot Put (47’ 10.25”) with Taylor Kesner of Highland (40’ 10.25) and Desire Poole of East St. Louis-Senior (37’ 5.25”) finishing second and third. Ulrich threw 146’ 4” to win the Discus with Kesner (131’ 4”) and Poole (119’ 3” again second and third.
Janiyah Brown of East St. Louis-Senior was a double winner in the Long Jump (16’ 8”) and a personal best of 35’ 10” to win the Triple Jump. Kaci Papin of Hillsboro won the High Jump clearing 5’ 0.75”. Morgan Noyes of Triad won the Pole Vault with a 9’ 9” meet best.
Rochester’s Colleen Ziebert won two individual events. The sophomore ran a lifetime best of 2:14.86 to win the 800 Meter Run by seven seconds ahead of Kristen Ess of Breese Central (2:21.82). Ziebert came back to run 5:20.78 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Lydia Roller of Staunton qualified for state after missing most of her senior season due to injury. Roller’s winning time in the 3200 Meter Run was 12:09.16. Janelynn Wirth of Roxana finished second (12:20.50).
Olivia Redpath of Sacred Heart-Griffin ran 13.03 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Sydney Harotin of Triad achieved a personal best of 58.43 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Markia Lampley of East St. Louis Senior ran 27.07 to win the 200 Meter Dash by more than a second. Harotin was also a part of Triad’s relays that won the 4x800m Relay (9:44.96) and 4:15.41 to win the 4x400m Relay by a close .24 hundredths of a second ahead of Sacred Heart-Griffin (4:15.65).
East St. Louis-Senior was on top of the other two relays. The Flyerettes ran 50.10 to win the 4x100m Relay to win the 4x100m Relay and 1:48.86 to win the 4x200m Relay by three seconds ahead of Triad (1:51.69).
2A Norridge (Ridgewood) Sectional – June 4
Fenwick dominated this meet held at Hope Academy. The Friars advanced 13 (9 individuals, 4 relays) to Charleston in winning with 154 points. Trinity and Lindblom tied for second (69 points).
Delaney Seligmann of Fenwick was the meet’s only multiple event winner. Seligmann won three events including the Long Jump (17’ 2.75”), the Triple Jump (35’ 2.75”), and the High Jump (5’ 1”). Other field event winners included Anna Androsyuk of Elmwood Park in the Pole Vault (6’ 0”), Mary Haywood of ITW Speer in the Shot Put (32’ 7”), and Mary Walsh of St. Laurence winning the Discus (85’ 9”).
Fenwick got distance wins from Katie Cahill running 12:11.08 in the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Resurrection’s Veronica Dworak (12:16.40), and Bella Daley winning the 1600 Meter Run (5:29.97) ahead of teammate Maggie O’Malley (5:36.64). Jasmine Reyes of Solorio Academy won the 800 Meter Run (2:35.17). Trinity ran 10:30.17 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Fenwick (10:41.47).
Sprint / Hurdle events winners included Symone Frison of Lindblom in the 100 Meter Dash (12.77), Isabella Brunke of Nazareth Academy in the 200 Meter Dash (28.07), Poppy Beisler of Chicago University in the 400 Meter Dash (1:04.84), Kennedy Ross of Lindblom in the 100 Meter Hurdles (16.70), and Sonia Kuchinic of Fenwick in the 300 Meter Hurdles (50.78).
Relay winners included Lindblom in the 4x100m Relay (50.16) and the 4x200m Relay (1:48.97), and Trinity in the 4x400m Relay.
