Illinois HS Cross Country Weekend Highlights - September 20, 2021

The big party of the weekend happened in Peoria this weekend with 91 teams entered in the Richard Spring Classic. You can read more and see more about the Richard Spring Classic on this link. Here are highlights of some of the meets that took place across Illinois this past weekend.

Minooka Flight Invitational @ Channahon Park

Lyons Township’s Boys and Girls team took the top prizes in winning the team championship in this flighted meet. In the Boys portion of the meet, #13 Lyons Township scored 16 points to win edging #7 Waubonsie Valley by one point. The Warriors scored 17 points to finish second. #19 Plainfield North finished third (23 points). Oliver Burns of Plainfield North edged Charlie McLawhorn to win the Boys Championship Flight. Both were timed at 15:12. Lyons Township picked up 2 wins out of the seven flights with Cillian Henning winning Flight 5 (16:00) and Aidan Collins winning Flight 6 (16:34). Waubonsie Valley received flight wins from Ethan Marshall in Flight 2 (15:40) and Jacob Tukker in Flight 4 (16:00). Topher Ferris of Downers Grove North won Flight 3 (15:40) and Logan Brown of Neuqua Valley ran 16:37 to win Flight 7.

#8 Lyons Township scored 17 points to win the Girls Team title to finish ahead of #18 Yorkville (19 points) and #4 Minooka (29 points). The finish was close also in the Girls Championship flight as Caroline Schoen of Homewood-Flossmoor edged Catherine Sommerfeld of Lyons Township for the win. Both were timed at 18:05. Liv Phillips of Naperville Central ran 18:13 to finish third. Lyons Township picked up three flight wins with Shannon Cranny winning Flight 5 (19:32), Anna Bylsma winning Flight 6, and Maureen Patrick in Flight 7 (19:51). Other flight winners included Gabriella McCollum of Minooka running 18:09 to win Flight 2, Margaret Hunter of Yorkville in Flight 3 (19:04), and Audrey Boles of Minooka in Flight 4 (18:41).

Woodstock Byrne Invitational @ Emricson Park

Will Gelon of Prairie Ridge ran 16:08 to win the Boys championship race in this flight meet. Trey Sato of Grayslake Central (16:27) finished second. Prairie Ridge had two other flight winners in this race with Daniel Llanquiman winning Flight 5 and Ian Mahon won Flight 6. Other Varsity Flight runners included Brandon Lawson of Guilford in Flight 2, Alex Wickersheim of Woodstock in Flight 3, Aryan Patel of Woodstock in Flight 4, and Ryan Rininger of Wauconda in Flight 7.

The Girls Championship Flight was dynamic in this meet. Bella Domier of Grayslake Central ran 18:42 for the win ahead of Isabella Marsico of Lake Forest (18:54), Danielle Jensen of McHenry (19:00), and Rachelle Soukup of Prairie Ridge (19:02). Other Flight winners included Reina Hill of Vernon Hills in Flight 2, Rose Sheridan of Vernon Hills in Flight 3, Katie Armstrong in Flight 4, Sofia Witt of Grayslake Central in Flight 5, Alex Fontana of Lake Forest in Flight 6, and Jessie Palaski of Wauconda in Flight 7.

Warren Bill Dawson Invitational

Luke Wiley started his invitational season running a fast 14:34 on his home course to win the Boys title by 45 seconds ahead of Mason Gates of Lincoln WI (15:19) and Warren’s Cole Kaether who had the same time. #23 Warren placed 3 in the first 4, 5 in the top 19 to win their own invitational with 39 points. Evanston (103 points), Glenbrook South (104 points), and Fremd (106 points) were the next three Boys teams. 2A #10 Crystal Lake South edged Warren 75 to 79 for the Girls team title. Maria Polyakov of Glenbrook North ran 7:45 to win the Girls individual race by five seconds ahead of Isabella Gonzalez of Crystal Lake South (17:50) and Mia Pasha of Warren (17:53). Crystal Lake South did not run their full line up in the Varsity race. Two of their top runners ran on the lower levels with Abby Machesky winning the Frosh/Soph race and Addie Frisch winning the Junior Varsity race.

Libertyville Invitational @ Adler Park

Jack Hamilton ran 16:45 for the individual win to help host Libertyville win the Boys team title with 56 points. #1 New Trier (59 points) and #26 Jones Prep (61 points) finished second and third. Neither team ran their top seven in this meet. #20 Libertyville also claimed top honors in the Girls race with 48 points as #27 Lockport (51 points) and #6 New Trier (52 points) finished second and third. New Trier did not have some of their top runners in this meet including #1 runner Beatrix Gilson. It was a close individual race as Kayla Shea of Lockport ran 18:53 for the win just one second ahead of Wheeling’s Brenda Torres.

Tuscola Classic @ Wimple Park

1A #7 Arthur-Lovington had their full lineup at the starting line for this meet on Saturday. They responded by placing 4 runners in the top 11, 5 runners in the top 23 to win the Boys team title with 44 points. Shelbyville (86 points) and 1A #26 Tuscola (97 points) finished second and third. Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda destroyed this field running 15:05 for the win by 88 seconds ahead of ALAH’s Logan Beckmeier. Arthur-Lovington’s split on their top four runners was 52 seconds. Their top five split was 87 seconds. 1A #3 Tolono Unity was coming off a strong race the week before at Peoria. The Rockets put 5 runners in the top 10 with a 61 second split led by Malia Fairbanks fifth-place finish scored 32 points to win the Girls team title. 1A #7 Urbana University (79 points) and 1A #13 Marshall (99 points) finishing second and third. Kate Ahmari of Urbana University ran 18:27 to win the race by 33 seconds ahead of Brooklyn Bender of Marshall. Aleigha Garrison of Judah Christian (19:10) and Trixie Johnson of Paxton-Buckley-Loda (19:19) finished third and fourth.

Dunlap Invitational

Wilson Georges of Limestone controlled this Boys field running 14:55 on the 2.96-mile course to easily win the Boys individual race by 42 seconds ahead of Lincoln’s Brenden Heitzig. 2A #22 Metamora, led by the third-place finish from Carson Cowling, placed 5 runners in the top 12 with only a 36 second split won the team title with 40 points. 2A #30 Dunlap was close in second (44 points) led by the 5-6 finish from Noah Hopkins and Henry Welsh. 2A #20 Metamora also claimed the title in the Girls race with 40 points. The Redbirds were led by Katie Lalumandier’s second-place finish. 1A #4 Eureka finished second (52 points) led by the individual win from Anna Perry. Her time of 18:06 was 32 seconds ahead of Lalumandier. 2A #4 Dunlap did not have their full lineup in this meet. The Eagles still scored 53 points to finish third.

Althoff Crusaders XC Invitational @ Swansea Clinton Hills Park (Friday)

1A #18 Benton placed 5 runners in the top 14 to easily win the Boys Meet with 29 points finishing ahead of Mascoutah (58 points), 1A #20 Belleville Althoff Catholic (72 points), and 1A #17 Freeburg (79 points). Benton sophomore Gavin Genisio ran 15:39 for the individual win with Joe Schwartz of Waterloo at 15:54 his closest competition. Benton’s top 5 split in this meet was 119 seconds. Their split from the second to fifth runners was only 31 seconds. 2A #17 Waterloo placed 4 runners in the top 6 to win the Girls team title in this meet with 32 points to finish ahead of Mascoutah (54 points) and Freeburg (109 points). Angelynn Kanyuck of Waterloo ran 19:43 for the individual win finishing ahead of Claire Nash of Belleville Althoff (20:06). Nash’s teammate Eris Nelson did not race in this meet.

Dale Donner Invitational @ Bureau Valley Junior High

The top four teams in the Boys Varsity race were separated by only 17 points. Sandwich had a 56 second split on their top five to score 95 to win the team title ahead of Sterling Newman Catholic (97 points), 1A #10 Elmwood (110 points), and Amboy (112 points). Mason Stoeger of Fieldcrest responded after a strong race in Peoria running 15:39 to win the individual race by 25 seconds ahead of Amboy’s Brock Loftus (16:04). Seneca freshman Evelyn O’Connor ran 19:22 to win the Girls race by 13 seconds ahead of Miranda Reed of Cambridge (19:35). Addie Symonds of Elmwood and Ashley Alsvig of Seneca finished third and fourth. Mercer County scored 110 points to win the team title ahead of Illinois Valley Central (133 points), Seneca (143 points), and Sherrard (144 points).

Whitney Young Invitational @ Humboldt Park

Elia Ton-That of Northside Prep answered her Peoria race when she ran 17:15 to Saturday’s race at Humboldt Park when she ran 16:46 on the 2.9-mile course. Nikki Chopra of Whitney Young ran 18:04 to finish second. Elia’s freshman sister Lucia Ton-That ran 18:15 to finish third. Northside Prep scored 29 points with 4 runners in the top 7 to win the Girls team title. Whitney Young edged Payton Prep 37-45 for the Boys team title. Gabriel Saunders of Whitney Young ran 15:12 to win the individual race ahead of Ritvik Viniak of Payton (15:13) and Bora Celiknal (15:14).

Highland Invitational @ Fireman’s Park

Elena Rybak of Father McGivney ran 18:57 to win the Girls race by 29 seconds ahead of Hannah Meiser of Bethalto Civic Memorial. Kaitlyn Hatley of Father McGivney ran 19:40 to finish third. 2A #29 Highland put 4 runners in the top 10 to help them win the team title with only 41 points. Champaign Central (64 points), 1A #11 Father McGivney (78 points), and Bethalto Civic Memorial (80 points) were the next three teams. Benja Stone finished 6th to help Marion win the Boys team title with 41 points ahead of 2A #23 Champaign Central (55 points) and 2A #24 Highland (64 points). Camden Quarton of Litchfield ran 16:16 to claim the individual win by four seconds ahead of Bethalto Civic Memorial’s Jackson Collman (16:20).

Edwardsville Invitational @ SIU-E XC Course

A 1-2 finish from Geordan Patrylak and Ryan Luitjohan helped #21 Edwardsville win their own invitational Boys race with 55 points ahead of Fort Zumwalt West MO with 57 points. Patrylak’s winning time of 16:58 was 11 seconds faster than his teammate Luitjohan. Emily Nuttall and Olivia Coil finished 1-2 to help Edwardsville’s team to the win (24 points) ahead of Francis Howell (MO). Edwardsville laced 5 runners in the top 9 in this race. Nuttall’s winning time of 20:29 was 12 seconds ahead of the 20:41 time of Coll.

Larry Eddington Invitational @ Kaneland

2A #11 Crystal Lake Central, led by the individual win from Hadley Ferrero and 4 runners in the first 11, won the team title with 45 points. Benet Academy (58 points) and 2A #13 Dixon (84 points) finished second and third. Ferraro’s winning time of 18:00 was 19 seconds ahead of Louisa Diamond of Benet Academy and another 25 seconds ahead of third-place Heather Durrant of Larkin. Riley Newport and Alex Boyden finished 1-3 to help #29 DeKalb win the Boys team championship with 77 points. A fourth-place finish from Evan Horgan helped 2A #3 Belvidere North to finish second with 85 points. Benet Academy and Jacobs scored 133 points to finish third and fourth. Glenbard West was next with 134 points. Newport’s winning time of 15:19 was 11 seconds ahead of Yusuf Baig of Burlington Central. Boyden (15:47) and Horgan (15:52) was third and fourth.
