2021 IHSA Class 3A Regional Highlights

Here are highlights of the 12 IHSA Class 3A regional meets that took place on Saturday.

 

Hinsdale Central Sectional

Oswego East Regional

Girls – Mystery abounded early in this race where Naperville North did not have their top runners led by Lucy Westlake and Marissa Magna were not near the front. It was found out after the meet that the two runners were held out of the race due to health-related issues according to their coach Dan Iverson. It changed the fabric of this race opening up the door for #9 Batavia. The Bulldogs, led by individual winner Katrina Schlenker, continue to improve placing 5 runners in the top 29 in winning the regional title with 75 points. Schlenker ran 17:26 to win by nine seconds ahead of Oswego’s Audra Soderlind (17:35). Sarah Maggio of Metea Valley finished third (17:43) just ahead of Louisa Diamond of Benet Academy (17:44) and Naperville Central’s Liv Phillips (17:45) and Ava Hendren (17:46). #11 Naperville Central was a close second with 79 points. #2 Naperville North, without Westlake and Magna, still finished third with 83 points led by freshman Emma Berres who finished tenth. #21 Metea Valley (100 points) and #15 Oswego East (104 points) were close in finishing fourth and fifth. #24 Oswego was the final sectional qualifier (150 points).

BoysParker Nold of Oswego East broke the course record by 14 seconds as he ran 14:47 for the individual win. Gabe Ryan of Naperville North finished second (14:57) ahead of Ethan Forsell of Oswego (15:01). #3 Oswego was strong in pack running again as they placed all their runners in the top 18 to win the regional title with 51 points. The Panthers had their top 5 in the top 16 led by Forsell and Balin Doud and his sixth-place finish. Their split on the group was 32 seconds. #7 Waubonsie Valley finished second (79 points) paced by a 9-10-11 finish from Jacob Tukker, Ethan Marshall, and Angel Solis. Their top 5 split was 34 seconds. # 9 Neuqua Valley (113 points), #27 Naperville Central (116 points), Naperville North (131 points), and Benet Academy (136 points) also qualified. Oswego East missed advancing to the sectional meet by eight points.

Lyons Township Regional

Girls – One of the heartbreaking moments of the weekend did not happen in this race. It would have been a great race between Evelyn Hett of Jones Prep and Josephine Welin of Oak Park-River Forest. Hett was held out of the Chicago City Championships due to a leg injury. It looked like she would be ready to go but the injury flared up again sidelining her. Jones finished seventh in the team race meaning Hett’s season is over. “I’m heartbroken for her,” her coach Andrew Adelmann said afterwards. “She’s the toughest/hardest working kid I’ve ever coached. I’ve personally never been as devastated over a situation like this.” Welin ran the same time on this course (17:34) as she did last week in the WSC-Silver Meet to claim the regional title. Catie McCabe of Hinsdale Central was her closest competition running 17:57 while Catherine Sommerfeld of Lyons Township ran 18:03 to finish third. McCabe ran 5 runners in the first 16 as #7 Hinsdale Central scored 43 points in winning the regional title. #13 Downers Grove North ran a great race led by the fourth-place finish from Claire Pyne placing 5 runners in the top 22 to score 60 points to finish second. #5 Oak Park-River Forest (81 points) and #10 Lyons Township (82 points) were separated by one point to finish third and fourth. Whitney Young (137 points) and Lane Tech (141 points) also advanced to the sectional next week at Katherine Legge Memorial Park.

Boys – There were fantastic individual and team races in this regional. The same scenario happened in the individual race as did last week at the WSC-Silver Daniel Watcke of Hinsdale Central kicked down Roy Llewellyn of Downers Grove North. Both runners ran over 12 seconds faster than last week. Watcke was timed in 15:21 to capture the win. Llewellyn was just a second behind running 15:22. Charlie McLawhorn of Lyons Township ran 15:28 to finish third just ahead of Colby Revord of Hinsdale Central (15:30). Hunter Whitney of Lane Tech rounded out the top five finishing fifth (15:39). Hinsdale Central finished ahead of Downers Grove North last week. The order changed on Saturday. #5 Downers Grove North scored 55 points to claim the team title with #2 Hinsdale Central close with 61 points in second. North had 5 runners in the top 25 with Karan Shetty (6th) and Caden Weber (8th) finishing in the top 10. Hinsdale Central placed their top 5 in the first 23. #6 Lyons Township scored 75 points to finish third ahead of #18 Oak Park-River Forest (112 points). # 20 Jones Prep (128 points) and St. Ignatius Prep (145 points) advanced out of this tough regional. #25 Lane Tech missed qualifying for next week by eight points.

Sandburg Regional

Girls – # 6Downers Grove South did not have one of their top runners Holly Johnson racing at this meet. The Lady Mustangs still put all of their runners in the top 10 to easily win the regional title with 20 points. Sophia McNerney, who did not race last week at the WSC-Gold Meet, ran a solo 16:57 on the 2.98 course at Midlothian Meadows to win by 49 seconds ahead of teammate Kelsey Casella (17:46). Ava Giblin of Sandburg ran 18:15 to finish third. Sandburg was the closest team with 59 points finishing second. Mother McAuley was next scoring 75 points. Stagg (112 points), Bolingbrook (166 points), and Reavis (188 points) also qualified for sectionals.

Boys – Top ranked Sandburg did not have their top runner Declan Tunney in this race but that did not matter. The Eagles still placed 5 runners in the top 9 to win with 27 points. Brock Rice (14:46) and Sean Marquardt (14:53) led Sandburg finishing second and third behind individual race winner Tim Neumann of Downers Grove South who had a fast 14:32 time. The top five split for Sandburg was 41 seconds. #26 Downers Grove South continues to improve scoring 43 points to finish second with 5 runners placing in the top 13. #28 Bolingbrook finished third (61 points) with Stagg next with 98 points. Reavis (165 points) and Shepard (170 points) also qualified.

 

Hoffman Estates Sectional

Schaumburg Regional

GirlsScout Storms of Barrington won her first regional title running 17:23 to capture the title by 16 seconds ahead of Lily Ginsberg of Prospect. Hailey Erickson ran 17:46 to finish third and helping #3 Prospect win the regional title with 28 points placing 5 runners in the top 10. The Lady Knights had a 50 second split on their top five runners. #14 Barrington (51 points), Jacobs (69 points), and #25 Palatine (94 points) were the second through fourth-place team qualifiers. Fremd finished fifth (149 points) ahead of Schaumburg (233 points). Rolling Meadows missed qualifying by five points.

Boys – It was close for the regional team title as #17 Barrington edges MSL rival #12 Palatine for the title 39-41. Joey Furlong of Barrington pulled away from the field to run 14:58 to win by 13 seconds ahead of Prospect’s TJ Garland (15:11) and Mason Krieg of Palatine (15:14). Barrington placed 5 runners in the top 15 with a 49 second split. Palatine placed 5 runners in the top 13 with only a 29 second split. #23 Prospect ran well scoring 58 points to finish third. Jacobs and Fremd both scored 126 points to finish fourth and fifth. Conant scored 152 points as the final team qualifier.

Glenbrook South Regional

Girls – #19 New Trier, led by top 10 finishes from Beatrix Gilson (4th), Samantha Fellman (7th), and Claire Finnigan (10th), placed 6 runners in the top 18 to easily win this regional with 50 points. Loyola Academy, still without two of their top five runners, scored 72 points to finish second. Glenbrook North freshmen Maria Polyakov and Juliet Frum grabbed the spotlight placing 1-2. Polyakov ran 17:33 to claim the win on Glenbrook South’s campus course ahead of her teammate Frum (17:47). Anna Harden of Hersey ran 17:52 to finish third just ahead of New Trier’s Gilson (17:54). #29 Hersey (107 points) and Evanston (112 points) finished third and fourth. Glenbrook South (112 points) and Glenbrook North (132 points) were the other teams from this regional that advanced to the sectional race next Saturday.

Boys – #4 New Trier was in charge of the team and individual portions of this race. The Trevians put 5 runners in the top 8 to win with a low 22 points. Nick Falk claimed the individual title in 15:06 to lead his team. Spencer Werner of Loyola Academy ran 15:25 to finish second. New Trier split on their top five was 51 seconds. Their split from their second (George Cahill) through fifth runner (Blake Deger) was only 23 seconds. #16 Hersey did not run Sean Safford in this meet but did finish second (79 points) behind the fifth-place finish from Connor Oiler. #22 Loyola Academy did not have Aidan Simon running in this meet but finished third (100 points). Glenbrook South scored 130 points to finish fourth. Glenbrook North and Evanston finished fifth and sixth both scoring 138 points.

Libertyville Regional

Girls – It was a good two runner race in the front in this regional. Aly Negovetich of Grant ran 17:30 in winning the regional title winning by nine seconds ahead of Lake Zurich’s Brooke Johnston (17:39). Mia Pasha of Warren finished third (18:07). Libertyville got top 10 finishes from Bree Ponchak (7th) and Sheila Tucker (8th) to help their team win the regional title with 62 points. Lake Zurich (90 points) and Grant (94 points) finished second and third. Warren was close in fourth (97 points) ahead of other qualifiers Zion-Benton (113 points) and McHenry (125 points).

BoysLuke Wiley of Warren tuned up for next week’s Hoffman Estates Sectional winning this regional (15:26) ahead of a trio of Lake Zurich runners led by Danny Burns (15:37). #15 Lake Zurich had a 46 second split on their top 5 that finished in the top 9 to win this regional title with 26 points. #21 Warren scored 49 points to finish second with Highland Park (80 points) and Libertyville (87 points) finishing third and fourth. Grant (166 points) and Mundelein (193 points) also advanced to Busse Woods for next week’s race.

 

Lake Park Sectional

Proviso West Regional

Girls – Top ranked York rolled to the team title as expected with 19 points taking the first six of seven places. Bria Bennis took the lead from Audrey Allman of Glenbard West just before two miles to win the race in 17:44. Allman ran 18:00 to finish second. York had a 21 second split on their next five runners led by Katelyn Winston finishing third. #8 Glenbard West finished second (48 points) ahead of #12 Maine South (66 points). Glenbard East (139 points), Taft (149 points), and Elk Grove (179 points) were also sectional qualifying teams.

Boys – #10 York swept the first five places to easily win the team total with 15 points. The Dukes ended up placing all of their runners in the top 9. The York team controlled the pace for most of the two miles before Michael Miller of Glenbard West took over the lead. That did not last that long as Ethan Summer and Garrett Schwan took the lead in the final mile with Schwan running 15:55 to win ahead of Summer’s 15:57 time. York’s top five split was 15 seconds. Miller was the first non-York to finish (6th) to lead Glenbard West to second (65 points) ahead of Maine South (76 points). Glenbard East (158 points), Leyden (159 points), and Elk Grove (162 points) were close together in the final three sectional spots. Taft missed qualifying by 3 points. Willowbrook missed qualifying by 8 points.

St. Charles East Regional

Girls – A great individual race in this regional with Grace Schager of Glenbard North setting a new course record of 17:32 to win the regional title by five seconds ahead of Naomi Ruff of South Elgin (17:37). #16 St. Charles East placed 5 runners in the top 15 with a 61 second split to win the team title with 50 points. The Saints had 3 runners in the top 10 with Morgan Sandlund (3rd), Brooklyn Walker (8th), and Marley Adelman (10th). #27 Wheaton-Warrenville South improved on their conference performance finishing second (69 points) behind top 10 finishes from Nicole Poglitsch (5th) and Annie Macabobby (9th). #17 St. Charles North (79 points), South Elgin (110 points), Wheaton North (111 points), and Bartlett (173 points)all advanced to next week’s sectional race at Lake Park.

Boys Micah Wilson ran a course record of 14:39 for the individual win and to help #19 St. Charles East win the regional team title. The Saints placed 5 runners in the top 13 to win with 35 points. Their split from second runner Mitch Garcia to fifth runner Lexton Rockwell was 35 seconds. #24 Wheaton North edged #30 Wheaton-Warrenville South for second 59-61 led by the third-place finish from Ryan Schreiner. Michael Atkins ran 15:17 to lead South. Geneva (133 points), Glenbard North (151 points) and South Elgin (177 points) also advance to Lake Park next Saturday.

Machesney Park Harlem Regional

Girls – Huntley placed 5 runners in the top 12 to win the regional title with 28 points. Brianna Burak led Huntley running 18:05 to win the individual title. She was 30 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Heater Durrant of Larkin (18:35). Molly Allen and Brittney Burak finished third and fourth for Huntley. Hononegah was the only other team in double digits scoring 52 points placing second. DeKalb (116 points), Rockford Guilford (124 points), Hampshire (137 points), and Larkin (138 points) were the other teams advancing to next week’s Lake Park Sectional.

BoysRiley Newport of DeKalb continues to rip up some great races. Newport won in this regional with a 15:35 time. The junior finished 20 seconds ahead of Brandon Lawson of Rockford Guilford (77 points). 17 points separated the first four teams. Hampshire had the edge winning with 60 points placing 5 runners in the top 18 with a 41 second split. DeKalb was a close second (64 points) placing their first four runners in the top 13. Huntley (69 points) and Rockford Guilford (77 points) finished third and fourth. Hononegah (120 points) and Elgin (151 points) also qualified.

 

Quincy Sectional

East Moline Regional

Girls – Southwest Prairie Conference rivals #4 Minooka and #18 Yorkville were close in the team race. Minooka edged Yorkville 28-31 for the regional title. Minooka placed 5 runners in the first 11. Yorkville placed 5 runners in the top 12 led by Anna Hunter’s individual win. Hunter’s time of 17:44 was just ahead of Gabriella McCollom of Minooka and Yorkville’s Makenna Edwards who were both timed in 17:49. #23 Plainfield North ran a solid race in scoring 78 points to finish third. Plainfield South (146 points), Plainfield Central (158 points), and Moline (177) were the other sectional team qualifiers.

Boys – Southwest Prairie Conference schools swept all six qualifying spots for next week in this meet held in the quad cities. There was a SPC feel in the individual race as Marcellus Mines of Joliet West continued his winning ways running 14:41 to claim the regional title ahead of Camryn Viger of Plainfield South (14:45), Zachary Balzer of Minooka (14:46), and Oliver Burns of Plainfield North (14:48). #8 Minooka placed 5 runners in the top 14 to win the team championship with 40 points. #14 Plainfield South was close with 44 points putting their top 5 in the first 15. #13 Plainfield North scored 56 points to finish third. #29 Plainfield Central (114 points), Yorkville (147 points), and Joliet Central (169 points) also advanced to next week’s sectional in Quincy.

Andrew Regional

Girls – Two close team finishes happened in this meet starting with the Girls race. #22 Lincoln-Way East scored 40 points to win the team title just ahead of second-place #28 Lockport (43 points). The Griffins were led by a 6-7-8 finish from Kate Guderjan, Elyse DeFrank, and Makayla Kelly. Lockport placed 5 runners in the top 17 led by the second-place finish from Kayla Shea. Caroline Schoen of Homewood-Flossmoor was dominant again in winning another race. The junior’s time of 17:08 was the winning regional championship time with Shea running 17:55 to finish second. Lincoln-Way West finished third (58 points) with Lincoln-Way Central (88 points), Andrew (159 points), and Romeoville (166 points) advancing to Quincy.

Boys – Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East had to go to the sixth runner in deciding the regional championship. Both teams scored 41 points. Central placed 5 runners in the top 14 with their sixth runner placing 20th. East placed their top five in the top 16 with their sixth runner placing 22nd. The individual race was also close as Nolan Rogers of Lincoln-Way East ran 15:01 to win the regional title ahead of Lincoln-Way Central’s Caden Simone (15:03). Homewood-Flossmoor finished third (69 points) ahead of Lockport (76 points). Andrew (151 points) and Lincoln-Way West (178 points) finished fifth and sixth.

Normal Community Regional

GirlsPeyton Schieppe of O’Fallon was in control in this race. The senior ran 17:31 to win the regional championship by 33 seconds ahead of Normal Community’s Ali Ince. Anna Scheuring of Quincy finished third (18:14). #30 Edwardsville demonstrated some great pack running in winning the regional title with 48 points. Emily Nuttall led the Tigers finishing fifth overall. The team placed 5 runners in the first 14. Their split on their second through fifth runners was 21 seconds. Their overall split was 57 seconds. O’Fallon led the next teams finishing second (66 points) ahead of Quincy (87 points) and Normal Community (90 points). Pekin (128 points) and Belleville West (137 points) were the other team qualifiers.

BoysRyan Watts of Edwardsville pulled away from the field to run 15:23 for the regional title. Fiker Rosen of Quincy (15:29) finished second. Byron Jones of Belleville East and Eli Greenstreet of O’Fallon finished third and fourth as both were timed at 15:32. #11 Edwardsville received top 10 finishes from Geordan Patrylak (5th) and Ryan Luitjohan (6th) along with Watts to win the team title with 45 points. O’Fallon did not have their entire top 7 racing but still finished second (67 points). Quincy (84 points), Pekin (118 points), Normal Community (132 points), and Bradley-Bourbonnais (152 points) were the other sectional team qualifiers. Belleville East missed qualifying by seven points.
