Stewart, a senior from Cherry Creek CO, took the lead at 2-miles and then rolled to a 17 second win crossing the line in a 16:54.2. The performance tied the meet and course record set by Anna Rohrer of 16:54 in 2012.

“It has been like ankle deep mud the past two years,” Stewart said after the race. “I didn’t expect this to be a fast course especially since the races I have raced her before were not perfect. It was great to run this awesome course when it was dry and in great conditions.”

Arianne Olsen of West Ottawa MI defined this race bolting from the pack just before the first mile and opening up a four second lead on a five-runner pack that included Stewart.

The lead changed hands at 2-miles with Stewart coming in with a convincing win.

Ali Weimer of St. Albertville-Michael MN was coming off a state championship and then winning the NXR Heartland Regional. She ran 17:11 in this meet to finish second. Sophia Kennedy of Park Tudor IN surprised some by running 17:18 to finish third. Kennedy is the daughter of American distance great Bob Kennedy. Kennedy’s teammate Gretchen Farley will also be making the trip to San Diego by finishing ninth (17:36).

Michigan and Indiana led the field with three qualifiers finishing in the top 10. Olsen led the way finishing fourth (17:19). Julia Flynn of Traverse City Central MI ran 17:25 to finish sixth. NXR Midwest Champion Rachel Forsyth of Ann Arbor Pioneer finished seventh (17:31). Karina James of Lowell IN joined Kennedy and Farley from Indiana in the top 10 by finishing eighth (17:34).

Illinois 2A State Champion Ava Parekh of Latin School IL was the lone qualifier from the state finishing fifth (17:21) and punching her ticket to San Diego. Wisconsin D1 state champion Lauren Pansegrau was the final qualifier in this race finishing tenth (17:39).

The defending champion from the 2019 race Abby Vanderkooi of Western Michigan Christian MI missed qualifying finishing 19th (17:59).

Hough, a senior from Hartland MI and the state’s D1 state champion, was part of a 20-runner pack as they approached the 2-mile mark in the Boys race. Hough decided to make his move at that point. Izaiah Steury of Angola IN made the decision to go with Hough at that point of the race. Both moves paid off in the end.

Hough crossed the finish line with the win. His time of 14:49.5 tied him with Chris Solinsky for the fourth fastest time ever in the meet and on this course. Steury, who finished third at the NXR Midwest race two weeks ago, ran 14:53 to finish second and making the trip to Sand Diego. Zane Bergen of Niwot CO and Nick Falk of New Trier IL crossed the line together in 14:55.4 finishing third and fourth.

“Honestly, I enjoyed it. It helped push me along,” Hough said about the pack that was with him. “I was a little worried that Izaiah (Steury) was staying close to me. The course conditions were close to perfect especially for a course like this.”

Four other Michigan runners joined Hough to run in the national finals in two weeks. Hunter Jones of Benzie Central MI ran 14:58 to finish fifth. Luke Venhuizen of Traverse City Central MI finished seventh (15:00). Peter Baracco of Farmington MI (15:09) and Caleb Jarema of Pinckney MI (15:10) finished ninth and tenth.

Nebraska State Champion Gabe Hinrichs of Elkhorn South IN ran 15:00 to finish sixth. Kole Mathison of Carmel IN also made the trip to nationals running 15:01 to finish eighth.

Krishna Thirunavukkarasu of Brebeuf Jesuit Prep IN finished eleventh missing the top 10 by two tenths of a second. Rock Bridge MO sophomore and NXR Midwest champion Andrew Hauser ran 15:18 to finish twelfth.
