Illinois High School Track & Field Highlights - April 25, 2022

It was kind of strange as I was waiting for the start of the Bob Cohoon Invitational that was in a delay for the start of the meet hearing from coaches and parents that their meet was called off before the meet even started. I looked at the radar and saw that the Chicago area would be clear by 6:00 PM. It was enough time to hold a meet. Downers Grove South finished their meet in three hours.

For the meets that kept their meet going for their kids, good for them. For those schools that had another knee jerk reaction and cancelled their meets early, I wonder if the people that are making those decisions are track savvy or even know how to read a radar. One school tweeted out that this was their fifth of seven meets cancelled this year. It’s sad.

Meets all weekend, especially on Saturday, had to deal with winds that gusted up later in the afternoon, did have some tremendous performances as we head towards the end of April.

Here is a look at highlights of some of those meets that took place over the past week.

Recaps – Bob Cohoon Invitational | Distance Night in Palatine

Results – 4/214/22 | 4/23

Sue Pariseau Invitational – Saturday

There were great performances in this Girls meet held at Glenbard West on the banks of Lake Ellyn. Defending 3A champion Lincoln-Way East flexed their muscles in winning the team title with 120.5 points. Naperville North (85 points), Whitney Young (69 points), New Trier (60 points), and Barrington (58 points) rounded out the top five teams.

Mariam Azeez led Lincoln-Way East with three individual wins. Azeez jumped a season’s best 19-3 (IL #2) to win the Long Jump. She came back with wins in the sprints over a great field. Azeez got off to a great start in the 100 Meter Dash to win the event at 12.06 (IL #3) ahead of Rachel Robinson (12.12, IL #5) and Sydney Robinson (12.31, IL #10) of Whitney Young. The same held true in the 200 Meter Dash as Azeez came off the curve with the lead and held on to nip Rachel Robinson at the line for the win. Azeez’s time of 25.12 (IL #3) was ahead of Robinson by just two hundredths of a second (25.14, IL #4). Sydney Robinson ran 25.33 (IL #6) to finish third.

The Robinson sisters led Whitney Young to state leading times to win the two sprint relays. The Lady Dolphins ran 47.92 to win the 4x100m Relay with Lincoln-Way East at 48.71 (IL #5) to finish second. Their win was even more convincing in the 4x200m Relay.
