Illinois HS XC Weekend Highlights - September 25, 2022

There was plenty of action across the state on Friday and Saturday headlined by the Palatine Meet of Champions. (READ THE RECAP OF THE MEET HERE)

 

Here are highlights of meets that took place on Friday and Saturday in Illinois and in states in the Midwest and Heartland regions.

 

Illinois Results

Roy Griak Invitational

Seven Illinois teams headed to Minnesota on Friday to compete in this meet held at Les Bolstad Golf Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota. All came back to Illinois with some good performances.

 

#3 Naperville North led Illinois schools in the HS Girls Gold race finishing fourth out of 53 schools scoring 247 points. The Huskies found a position in the top six and stayed there for the rest of the race. Julie Piot led her team in finishing 19th. Rianna Tandon was 27 seconds back in 39th place followed by her sister Shania who was a second back in 41st. Logan Brennan (73rd) and Emma Berres (88th) were also a part of the Naperville North top five. The split on that group was 88 seconds.

 

#17 Yorkville was within reach of Naperville North throughout this race. The Foxes finished sixth overall with 334 points. Sophia Keeler (46th) and Ava Galloway (54th) led a Yorkville team that a 52 second split on their top five. #19 Rockton Hononegah ran a great race against some top teams in this division. The Indians scored 441 points to finish 11th overall led by finishes from Kylie Simpson (35th) and Indigo Sterud (50th). #7 Batavia got out slow in this meet in 31st place after the first mile. They moved up to finish 14 overall with 478 points. The Bulldogs had a 51 second split on their scorers led by Liliana Bednarek (65th) and Brooke Silbernagel (87th).

 

Wayzata MN, led by the individual win from Abbey Nechanicky, came from behind in the final mile to catch Cherry Creek CO winning by one point, 113-114. Olathe West KS scored 142 points to finish third. Nechanicky’s winning time of 17:37 was 31 seconds ahead of second-place Paityn Noe of Ballard IA.

 

#5 Neuqua Valley led the team standings after the first 3 kilometers of the Boys Gold race. The Wildcats ended up finishing fifth with 311 points. The team had a 37 second split through the 3k checkpoint. They ended up a 66 second split on their scorers led by Zac Close and his 14th place finish. Ryan Palmer was the next Wildcat across the line in 51 followed by Robert Glenn (64th), Matthew Gutierrez (84th), and Andres Lopez (106th).

 

#11 Plainfield North moved from 18 at the mile, to 12 at 3k, and then finishing sixth overall with 323 points. The Tigers were led by Oliver Burns (18th) and Ryan Tracey (47th). The team had a 63 second split on their top five. Yorkville finished 17th out of 55 teams led by finishes from Ben Whaley (61st) and Jake Younger (87th). The Foxes had a 54 second top five split.

 

Downing Catholic IA moved up in the final 2k to capture the team title (153 points) ahead of Minnesota schools Lakeville North (174 points) and Wayzata (208 points). Noah Breker of Robbinsdale Armstrong MN ran 15:31 to edge Jackson Heidesch of Downing Catholic (15:33) and Ford Washburn of Iowa City IA (15:34) for the individual title.

 

Naperville Girls Invitational

The race location this year changed from St. James Farm in Wheaton to the new Northwestern Medicine XC Course near Geneva. The change of location did not seem to bother #6 Naperville Central as they won the team title with only 27 points. #15 Oswego East scored 86 points to finish second ahead of #26 Sandburg (115 points), #29 Wheaton North (126 points), and #28 Benet Academy (136 points).

 

The Redhawks made a statement in this race placing four runners in the top six while their top five placed in the first 14 with an 80 second split. Kate Tueting ran 17:37 to claim the individual win on the 2.97 mile course with teammate Liv Phillips just two seconds back. Louisa Diamond of Benet Academy finished third (18:08) ahead of Naperville Central’s Ava Hendren (18:16) and Sandburg freshman Lindsey Gerhardstein (18:21).

 

St. Joseph-Ogden Spartan Classic

Tuscola’s Josiah Hortin and Jackson Barrett tore up this race on the streets of St. Joseph. The two juniors finished 1-2 with Hortin running 14:57.98 for the win with Barrett just .04 seconds behind. Sam Bushert of El Paso-Gridley ran 15:10 to finish third. 1A #6 St. Teresa got a 6-7-8 finish from Caleb Kernaghan, Evan Cook, and Martin Velchek to win the team title with 60 points. 1A #7 El Paso-Gridley (92 points) and 1A #17 Tuscola finished second and third. 1A #14 St. Joseph-Ogden scored 114 points to finish fourth ahead of 1A #23 Effingham St. Anthony (174 points).

 

Class 1A Top ranked Tolono Unity solidified their position on top of the state as the Rockets scored 37 points to claim the Girls team title. Unity 5 runners in the top 15 led by Erica Woodard’s individual win. It was close as Woodard ran 17:12 to claim the win just by a second ahead of Monticello’s Mabry Bruhn (17:13). Arianna Neisen of Liberty ran 17:41 to finish third. Unity’s top 5 split was big at 101 seconds because of Woodard’s great race. Their split from their second through fifth runners was only 59 seconds. 1A #10 El Paso-Gridley scored 97 points to finish second ahead of 1A #12 Urbana University (149 points), 1A #11 Shelbyville (167 points), and 1A #23 Monticello (174 points).

 

Culver Academies IN Invitational

#12 Lyons Township traveled east to Indiana finishing second with 71 points. The top team in Ohio Mason won the team title with 35 points putting 5 runners in the top 13. Issac Schachleiter of Mason ran 15:44 for the individual win. Nick Strayer of Lyons ran 15:55 to finish second. The Lions put their first four runners in the top 16 led by Strayer, Cillian Henning (5th), Aidan Collins (7th), and Michael Ferrell (16th). The split on their four runners was 40 seconds. Matthew McGovern was the team’s fifth runner finishing 43rd. Their overall split was 69 seconds.

 

#16 Neuqua Valley again was without their top runner Carissa Hamilton for the second week in a row. The Wildcats finished 14th out of 25 teams in this meet led by the 20 place finish from Gretchen Leland.

 

East Peoria Invitational

This meet returned to Illinois Central College after a year away at Black Partridge Park. It was freshmen runners who were in charge of the Boys individual race. Caleb Mathias of Champaign Central ran 15:59 for the win ahead of another freshman Augustus Gaudio of Mahomet-Seymour (16:06). 1A #1 Normal University placed four runners in the top eight separated by only 11 seconds to win the team title with 64 points. Brandt Henderson and Mason Hart’s 4-5 finish led the Pioneers. 1A #8 Eureka, led by third and sixth place finishes from Charlie Bardwell and Carson Lehman, finished second with 73 points. 2A #13 Champaign Central scored 98 points to finish third. 2A #6 Morton did not run their full lineup but finished fourth with 100 points.

 

2A #5 Dunlap edged 2A #7 Washington 45-47 for the Girls team title in a battle of Mid-Illini Conference powerhouses. Dunlap placed 5 runners in the top 16 with Saniya Mathew (4th), Kate Robertson (6th), and Abby Tudeen (8th) finishing in the top 10. The Eagles only had a 41 second split on their top five runners. Washington, who had three freshmen in their top five in this race, also had 3 runners in the top 10 led by Sophia Ramirez (3rd), Jayne Hermann (5th), and Olivia Nordheilm (7th). The difference was that the Panthers had 5 runners in the top 17 with a 50 second split. Washington had the edge 15-18 after three runners. Dunlap changed that leading 29-30 after four runners.

 

1A #5 Eureka finished third with 82 points. 2A #23 Morton (120 points) and Mahomet-Seymour (133 points) finished fourth and fifth. 2A #3 Normal University split their runners up in the Varsity and Frosh/Soph races. The Pioneers finished sixth with 136 points. U-High’s Natalie Bierbaum ran 17:46 to win the individual race with teammate Zoe Carter running 18:09 to finish second.

 

Midwest Invitational WI

Hinsdale Central finished second overall in the Girls Varsity race in this meet. The Red Devilettes scored 149 points to finish behind team winner Waunakee WI who scored 102 points. Sarah Fischer of Hinsdale Central has been running hot this fall claiming her first individual win of her senior season. Fischer’s winning time of 17:42 for 5-kilometers was eight seconds faster than second-place Abigail Sadler of Mount Horeb WI. Fischer’s teammate Catie McCabe was in the top five when she dropped out just after 2-miles due to a minor injury. Warren Township (24th overall) and Rockford Guilford (27th overall) were other Illinois schools in this race.

 

Oconomowoc WI scored 78 points in winning the Boys team title. Warren Township finished second (150 points) led by Kimi Vesely’s 17th place finish. #30 Rockford Guilford scored 287 points to finish eighth behind Brandon Lawson finishing 11th overall. Rockton Hononegah was also in the Boys race finishing 12th out of 48 teams.

 

Macnider Invitational

#5 Minooka need 5 runners in the top 13 to hold off Huntley for the team title scoring 39 points. #10 Huntley scored 47 points to finish second with #22 St. Charles East finishing third (83 points). Juliet Frum of Glenbrook North ran 17:59 on the 5k course for the win. Huntley’s Breanna Burak (18:21) and her sister Brittney (18:31) finished second and third. Minooka had a 66 second on their top five led by the 4-5 finish from Maya Ledesma and Gabriella McCollom.

 

Huntley had top 10 finishes from Tommy Nitz in second, Ty Rasmussen in eighth, and Zachary Zuzzio in tenth to help them win the Boys team title with 48 points. Minooka (63 points) and Oswego (72 points) finished second and third. Zach Balzer of Minooka shattered the 14 year-old course record at Schaumburg’s Hoover School 5k course. Balzer ran 15:32 to win by 23 seconds ahead of Huntley’s Tommy Nitz. The old course record was set by two-time all-state runner Pat Lesiewicz of Schaumburg who ran 15:42 in 2008.

 

Springfield Invitational

2A #6 Chatham-Glenwood edged 2A #17 Rochester 53-61 for the Girls team title. Becca Heitzig of Lincoln ran 18:09 to win the individual race by 28 seconds ahead of Colleen Zeibert of Rochester (18:37). Louisa Wilson of Williamsville ran 18:48 to finish third. Zeibert was one of 4 Rochester runners that finished in the top 13. Chatham-Glenwood was led by a 4-5 finish from Rachel Behrens and Ashlyn Chopra. Host Springfield scored 95 points to finish third.

 

2A #19 Chatham-Glenwood made it a sweep winning the Boys title scoring 74 points. Mascoutah finished second (115 points) ahead of 2A #15 Lincoln (129 points) and Mt. Vernon (131 points). Lincoln’s Brenden Heitzig controlled the individual race running 15:52 for the win ahead of Taylorville’s Owen Morgan by 34 seconds.

 

Bartlett Flyin’ Hawk Invitational

Riley Newport of DeKalb picked up his fourth individual win this season in this meet. Newport ran 15:11 for the win by 12 seconds ahead of Quintin Lowe of Batavia. Jacobs won the Boys team title with 48 points placing three runners in the top 10 led by Andrew Beyer (4th). #25 Conant scored 72 points to finish second led by the third-place finish from Vijay Krishnamoorthi. Batavia (79 points) and Waubonsie Valley (96 points) finished third and fourth.

 

2A #11 Crystal Lake South placed 5 runners in the top 12 led by the individual win from Isabella Gonzalez to win the Girls team title with 33 points. Jacobs finished second (50 points with Waubonsie Valley scoring 118 points to finish third. Gonzalez’s winning time of 17:36 was 24 seconds ahead of second-place Bailey Schwartz of Jacobs. Heather Durrant of Larkin (18:06), Natalia Maciorowski of Jacobs (18:13), and Abby Machesky of Crystal Lake South rounded out the top five runners in this race.

 

Sterling Rock River Run

Geneva took home the Boys team title with 86 points led by top 10 finishes from Andrew Warcup in second and Anthony Ross finishing tenth. 2A #24 Sycamore finished second with 99 points. 2A #7 Belvidere North did not have their full lineup in this race. The North Stars still scored 133 points to finish third. Hampshire and 2A #16 Kaneland both scored 135 points finishing fourth and fifth. Kaneland’s Evan Nosek ran 15:38 for the win finishing ahead of Geneva’s Warcup (15:51) and Wyatt Miller of Sandwich (15:52).

 

2A #9 Dixon dominated the Girls race placing 6 runners in the top 13 scoring only 33 points. Hampshire with 118 points and Geneva with 127 points finished second and third. Hanna Ford of Rock Falls ran 18:39 to claim the individual win by five seconds ahead of Rubi Tapia-Macias of East Moline United (18:44) and another four seconds ahead of Emma Smith of Dixon (18:48). Dixon’s top five split was an impressive 51 seconds.

 

Tolefree/Farley XC Invitational

#24 Lincoln-Way East won the Boys Championship Division in this meet placing 5 runners in the top 11 scoring only 33 points. The Griffins were led by a third-place finish from Jack Roberts. Their top five split was only 19 seconds. Bolingbrook and Bradley Bourbonnais both scored 78 points finishing second and third. Hussein Almousawi of Bolingbrook won the race in this division by 13 seconds ahead of Bradley’s Jeremiah Lanum (15:44). Shepard was the Olympic Division winner scoring 47 points ahead of HL Richards (61 points) who was without their top runner Owen Forberg who ran at Palatine. Andy Damon of Oak Forest ran 17:19 to win the divisional race.

 

#27 Lincoln-Way East edged Lincoln-Way West 64-67 for the Championship Division title placing 3 runners in the top 10. Madeline Mellin of Bradley Bourbonnais ran 18:45 for the win with Kara Waishwell of Lincoln-Way East running 19:02 to finish second. 1A #13 Chicago Christian was in complete control of the Olympic Division with their top 5 in the first nine places scoring only 20 points. Anna Ederle led the charge for the Knights running 19:13 for the win by a margin of 58 seconds ahead of Oak Forest’s Mia Nutile. Glenbard South scored 100 points to finish second. Chicago Christian’s split from their second through fifth runners was only 27 seconds.

 

Winnebago Schmidt Invitational

1A #2 Winnebago swept the first three places in the Girls race led by the individual win from Grace Erb who ran 11:55 on the 2.05-mile course. Teammates Marissa Roggensack (12:04) and Kaylee Woolery (12:05) were 37 seconds ahead of the rest of the race. Bago placed 5 runners in the top 14 to win on their home course with 29 points. Rockford Boylan scored 41 points to finish second.

 

One second separated the top three runners in the 2.85-mile Boys race. Alex Horton ran 15:15.18 to claim the win ahead of Aiden Ruiz of Dakota (15:15.75) and Nicolai Martino of Winnebago (15:16.21). Machesney Park Harlem edged 1A #19 40-45 for the Boys team title.

 

Grant JT Taylor Invitational

2A #8 Lake Forest, led by a third-place finish from Isabella Marsico and eight-place finish from Alexandra Fontana, scored 42 points to win the Girls team title ahead of Grant Community (75 points) and 1A #8 Johnsburg (83 points). Johnsburg’s Jolene Cashmore ran 18:28 to outdistance Audrey Luell of Zion-Benton by 29 seconds (18:57) for the individual win. Marsico’s third-place time was 19:05.

 

2A #8 Woodstock won the Boys team title with 55 points behind Ishan Patel’s individual win and his brother Aryan finishing fourth. Ishan’s winning time of 15:52 was 21 seconds ahead of second-place Micah Lind of Lakes. Grant Community (65 points) and 2A #17 Vernon Hills (71 points) finished second and third.

 

Herscher Invitational

1A #30 Herscher edged 1A #19 Seneca 48-52 for the Girls team title. Beecher with 83 points finished third. Seneca had two runners in before Herscher’s Gracie Kent came across in seventh in as the team’s top runner. The key was Herscher having six runners in before Seneca’s fourth runner finished. Seneca’s Evelyn O’Connor easily won the individual race (19:03) by 31 seconds ahead of Celeste Richards of Peotone.

 

1A #15 Pontiac placed four runners in the top eight to win the Boys race with 36 points ahead of Herscher (61 points) and Rantoul (94 points). Bryson Grant of Iroquois West was timed at 15:57 to win the individual race by 15 seconds ahead of Aidan Lee of Pontiac.

 

Freeburg Invitational

1A #10 Benton used an individual win from Gavin Genisio and two other runners in the top eight to win the team title with 53 points. Genisio went under 15-minutes on this course running 14:53 for the win and finishing ahead of Columbia’s Ethan Hogan (15:12) and Benton’s Gabriel McLain (15:37). Bethalto Civic Memorial scored 63 points to finish second behind top 10 finishes from Jackson Collman in fourth and Justice Eldridge in seventh. Triad scored 89 points to finish third.

 

2A #15 Waterloo again used some solid pack running to lead them to a team win. The Bulldogs only had a 28 second split on their top four that all finished in the top 10 led by Cameron Crump and Angelynn Kanyuck that finished sixth and seventh. Waterloo scored 51 points to win the team title ahead of 1A #16 Breese Mater Dei (111 points) and 1A #22 DuQuoin (114 points). The individual race could have been a preview of what we might see in Peoria this November. Ahry Comer of Pope County ran 17:33 to claim the individual win by 20 seconds ahead of Elana Rybak of Father McGivney. Hannah Meiser of Bethalto Civic Memorial (18:08), Eris Nelson of Althoff Catholic (18:22), and Kaitlyn Hatley of Father McGivney (18:44) were also a part of the individual top five.

 

Harvest Christian Academy Mid-Season Classic

The first three teams in the Girls race were separated by only six points. 2A #28 St. Francis scored 91 points to win the team title ahead of Metea Valley (96 points) and 1A #De Paul Prep (97 points). 2A #25 Riverside-Brookfield (115 points) and 2A #24 Nazareth Academy (160 points) finished fourth and fifth. Freshman Sydney Gertsen of Montini ran 19:23 to win on this 5k campus course. Bryce Pacourek of RB (19:45) and Maya Hall of Metea Valley (19:52) finished second and third.

 

1A #2 DePaul Prep got a 4-6 finish from Mac Kittrell and Bryan Malkowski to help them win the Boys team title with 77 points. Metea Valley (99 points) and 2A #23 St. Francis (102 points) finished second and third. 1A #3 Latin School was without their top runner Akili Parekh, finished fourth (107 points) ahead of 1A #9 Aurora Central Catholic (120 points). 2A #2 Riverside-Brookfield did not run a full lineup including their top runner Cooper Marrs. The Bulldogs still finished sixth (139 points). Daniel Winkelman of Harvest Christian Academy won again on his home course running 16:15 to claim the win ahead of Aurora Central Catholic’s Patrick Hilby (16:23) and Jack O’Brien of Riverside-Brookfield (16:28).

 

Run Down at the Round Barn Invitational

This is a new Boys meet hosted by Lincoln-Way Central. The host school won the meet (38 points) to finish ahead of Homewood-Flossmoor (47 points) and Lockport (48) points). Ethan Hoff of Lincoln-Way Central ran 15:42 to win the individual race ahead of Lockport’s Cameron Valcich (15:47) and Michael Welcome (15:48).
