Illinois HS XC Weekend Highlights  - October 2, 2022

Nalley’s 14:03 at Detweiller highlights a busy first weekend in October

Plenty of big things happened this weekend with great team races by Plainfield South Boys and Prospect Girls and individual races from Tatum David and Daniel Watcke at Saturday Night’s Nike XC Town Twilight Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana (Read more about this meet).

The top ranked York Girls team set a meet scoring record winning six of seven flights scoring only 8 points at the Wheaton North Falcon Classic (Read more about this meet).

Perhaps the biggest performance this weekend was Dylan Nalley running 14:03 to win in the Peoria Central Invitational at Detweiller Park. More about that meet below.

Here are highlights from some of the meets that took place this past weekend.

Peoria Invitational

It is seldom that you see a runner close to 14-minutes on the Detweiller Park course. It happened on Saturday in the 1A/2A Boys race in this meet. Dylan Nalley is a man on a mission this fall. The Marion junior ran a fantastic 14:03.45 to win the individual race.

Nalley becomes the third fastest runner in the 50+ year history of the 3-mile course at Detweiller in a non-state meet race trailing only Dylan Jacobs (13:57.5) and Danny Kilrea (14:02.3) who ran their times in September invites in 2017. Jacobs’ time is the current meet record.

Nalley is now the second fastest junior ever on the course trailing only Craig Virgin who ran 13:59 to win the IHSA State title in 1971. He is now tied for 14 with Donald Sage for the fastest time ever on the course. It gets us to start to wonder what kind of times he will have in his legs at the beginning of November back on this course.

Five runners went under 15-minutes in this race. Gavin Genisio of Benton broke the school record set by his coach Brent McLain who ran 14:39 to win the AA title in 1982. Genisio’s second-place time was 14:37.08. Dale Johnson of Sterling (14:53), Joe Schwartz of Waterloo (14:56) and Julian Baker of Mt. Zion (14:59) rounded out the top five.

Nalley helped 2A #2 Marion win the team title in the 1A/2A division. The Wildcats scored 136 points placing their top four runners in the first 26 places. 1A #2 Normal University scored 152 points to finish second. The Pioneers put four runners in from 12th place to 27th place led by Mason Hart’s finish. The split on that group was 21 seconds with a top five split of 54 seconds. 2A #12 Mather finished third (172 points) paced by top 20 finishes from Muhiyadin Ali (6th) and Mohammed Abdullahi (18th). 2A #22 Champaign Central placed fourth (215 points) led by Caleb Mathias finishing ninth. 2A #19 Fenwick is getting healthy and it showed as they finished fifth (251 points) led by a top 10 finish from Nathaniel McKillop in seventh.

2A #2 Crystal Lake South was in control of the 1A/2A Girls race scoring 89 to win that race divisional title. Normal University took the top two places in the individual race as Zoe Carter stormed away to win the individual title running a seasonal best of 17:17. Her freshman teammate Natalie Bierbaum ran 17:23 in finishing second. Isabella Gonzalez led Crystal Lake South by finishing third running 17:30. Six runners in the race ran under 18-minutes including Sandwich freshman Sundara Weber in fourth (17:45), Hannah Meiser of Bethalto Civic Memorial in fifth (17:51), and Saniya Mathew of Dunlap in sixth (17:59).

Gonzalez led 5 South runners in the top 37 with Abby Machesky following in 11th. Collette Bacidore (20th) and Olivia Pinta (21st) finished within three seconds of each other. Anna McDermott was the team’s fifth runner placing 37th. The team’s top five split was 94 seconds with their split from Machesky to McDermott at 55 seconds.

2A #8 Dunlap finished second (105 points) led by Mathew’s finish and a 69 second split on their top five. Their 2-5 split off Abby Tudeen’s 15th place finish was 43 seconds. 2A #10 Chatham-Glenwood finished third (148 points) with Rachel Behrens finishing in the top 10 placing eighth. 2A #8 Normal University finished fourth (163 points) behind the 1-2 finish from Carter and Bierbaum. 2A #30 Morton (173 points), 2A #18 Waterloo (178 points), 2A #13 Normal West (179 points), and 2A #25 Mt. Zion (185 points) finished fifth through ninth separated by 12 points).
