#10 – An Indoor State Record for Allison Ince in the 800m Run

By Michael Newman

The 800 Meter Run Invitational race was supposed to be a test for Normal Community’s Allison Ince in Saturday’s MVP Vibe Fest help in Chicago’s Worrill Track Center. The field was good and included Chicago Public League runners Hannah Tiete of Taft and Lucia Ton That of Northside Prep.

In the end, the race felt like a time trial as she won by nine seconds ahead of Ton-That and Michigan runner Kylee King. Ince’s winning time of 2:07.13 was nine seconds ahead of Ton-That and King who were both timed in 2:16.21 who finished second and third. Diete ran 2:18.88 to finish fifth.

Ince ran the nation’s second fastest time of the indoor season. More importantly, she set a new indoor best time ever for Illinois High School female runners. It improved her indoor personal best by two seconds (2:09.10) run at last year’s New Balance Indoor Nationals.

Ince has the outdoor state all-time record of 2:03.98 run as a freshman in 2021 at the Brooks PR Invitational. She has run eight of the nine fastest times ever for Illinois athletes at that distance. She has still almost two full seasons more to run even faster.

The Boys 3200 Meter Run at that meet also turned in some good performances. Ford Washburn of Iowa City HS IA ran close to a 30 second indoor personal best with a 9:02.48 to claim the win. 1A Boys State XC champion Gavin Genisio of Benton also ran a personal best of 9:09.42 to finish second. His teammate Gabriel McLain only ran 11:00 as a freshman in 2022. On Saturday, he ran 9:30.48 to finish third.

Other distance performances included Grayden Rill of Fenwick running 4:19.47 to win the Boys Invitational 1600 Meter Run. Justin Petrie of Menlo HS CA ran 1:54.57 to win the Boys Invitational 800 Meter Run. The next three finishers came from Illinois including Michael Polizzi of Taft running 1:55.94 to finish second, Riley Newport of DeKalb finishing third (1:56.14), and Julian Aske of Beacon Academy finishing fourth (1:56.35).

Mia Kotler of Latin School ran 10:50.22 to win the Girls Invitational 3200 Meter Run. Jane Lynch of Loyola Academy ran 10:59.33 to finish third. Anna Harden of Hersey ran 4:55.25 to finish second in the Girls Invitational 1600 Meter Run in a race won by Josie Baker of Kirkwood MO (4:53.16).

The third weekend of February meets in Illinois started to produce some fast times and great races.

York’s Girls Invitational #1 on Friday produced two highly competitive distance races. Catie McCabe of Hinsdale Central took the lead 200-meters in to the 800 Meter Run. She held off York’s Brooke Berger to run 2:17.22 for the win. Berger ran 2:17.56 to finish second. Bria Bennis of York took the lead with a little over four laps to go to win the 3200 Meter Run (10:47.36) by 20 seconds ahead of Sarah Fischer of Hinsdale Central (11:07.47).

The remaining two distances races in the meet became solo efforts. Scout Storms of Barrington took the lead 100-meters into the 600 Meter Run. Storms ran 32-34-34 for each 200m to finish in 1:40.93 and to win by nine seconds. The same held true for Liv Phillips of Naperville Central in the 1600 Meter Run. The junior led after the first lap and then ran a solo 5:07.71 personal best to win the race by 17 seconds ahead of Hinsdale Central’s Sarah Skora (5:24.45).

Naperville North’s Shania and Rianna Tandon each won individual distance races in solo efforts at Saturday’s Girls Invitational at Wheaton-Warrenville South. Rianna Tandon took the lead early on her way to running 11:44.87 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Shania Tandon also pulled away earlier in the 1600 Meter Run. She ran 5:20.59 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

Bella Domier of Grayslake Central pulled away from the 800 Meter Run field at Saturday’s Hononegah Girls Invitational. The all-state junior ran 2:19.11 to win the race by six seconds ahead of Marley Andelman of St. Charles East (2:25.18) and Indigo Sterud of Hononegah (2:25.33).

It was a close finish in the 600 Meter Run at Saturday’s Homewood-Flossmoor Boys Quad Meet. Nicholas Castrillon of Neuqua Valley ran 1:28.02 to win the race by just a hundredth of a second ahead of Zachary Balzer of Minooka. Balzer earlier ran 2:02.58 to win the 800 Meter Run with Castrillon (2:04.18) and his teammate Robert Glenn (2:04.56) finishing second and third.

Saturday’s Clinton Invitational at the Shirk Center produced a good 1600m Run race. Nora Brady of Bloomington Central Catholic ran 5:18.21 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Normal University freshman Natalie Bierbaum running 5:25.38 to finish second.

Friday evening’s U-High Mini Meet #2 at the University of Illinois gave us a double win from Marshall freshman Molly Farrell. The all-state runner from last fall ran 2:31.05 to win the 800 Meter Run by just a hundredth of a second ahead of Ashlyn Denney of Tolono Unity. Farrell won another close race in the 1600 Meter Run. Farrell’s time of 5:17.19 was a personal best and a four second win ahead of Erica Woodard of Tolono Unity (5:21.33) and Kate Ahmari of Urbana U-High (5:22.27).

The Proviso West Boys Meet #3 this February had an impressive 1600 Meter Run. Four runners were under 4:30 in that race led by Ryan Eddington of Downers Grove North running 4:25.70 for the win. Asa Gaspar of Downers Grove North (4:28.01), Ben Crane (4:28.11) and Samuel Teppo (4:29.89) of New Trier were next.
