#11 - Hilby, Lowe set Boys meet records; fast Girls 1600 highlights Batavia Distance Madness

By Michael Newman

Brett Wasick made this meet his steppingstone on to a way to a state title running a meet record of 1:56.22 in last year’s Batavia Distance Madness. If Friday’s meet inside Batavia’s Fieldhouse, Patrick Hilby of Aurora Central Catholic could be following a similar path.

RESULTS

The junior destroyed the championship field that he was in running 1:55.40 (IL #2) to win the meet title and setting a new meet record in the process. Hilby won his section by more than four seconds ahead of Jett Breed of Oswego (1:59.56) and Muhiyadin Ali of Mather (2:00.07). Brett and Ali would finish sixth and seventh overall.

Hilby’s newly found meet record did get a little scare in the section that followed his race. John Ihrke of Glenbrook North ran a personal best of 1:56.89 to win his section. He ended up finishing second overall in the event. The next three finishers in this race finished second through fifth overall led by William Huddleston of Maine South (1:57.87) followed by Michael Ferrell of Lyons Township (1:58.47) and Matthew Andreano of Jacobs (1:59.38).

There were two meet records that were set in this meet Friday evening. The second came in the final race of the meet in the 1600 Meter Run.

Quintin Lowe had the home track advantage in this meet. The Batavia senior used the familiar surroundings to his advantage to surpass the meet record of 4:17.47 set by Keagan Smith in 2015.

Brandon Lawson of Rockford Guilford set a high standard in the penultimate section of the event running 4:22.05 (IL #8) for the section win. Vijay Krishnamoorthi of Conant ran 4:23.26 (IL #10) to finish second.

Four runners led the way in the final section. It was Lowe moving in the final lap that got the win helping two other runners in that race under 4:20. Lowe ran 4:17.00 to establish the new meet record and as of Saturday morning, the fastest time in the state Foster Shelbert of Naperville Central, who qualified for the state meet last year in the 400 Meter Dash, ran a huge personal best of 4:18.15 (IL #2) to place second. Will Kozlowski of Lane Tech ran 4:19.51 (IL #4) to finish third. Defending Class 1A champion Isaac Teel of Pinckneyville ran 4:20.59 (IL #6) to finish fourth.

The final race in the Girls 1600 Meter Run provided some great excitement with the top three runners under 4:55, and the top eight finishers ranked in the top 10 in the state (as of Saturday morning).

It was a certainty that the championship field would surpass the fastest time of the night in the event. Shannon Cranny of Lyons Township won Section 6 (5:09.49) setting the standard the “all-state” field in the final section.

Six runners would run under five-minutes in this race. It is something you do not see that much in an indoor invitational race in Illinois. It came down to a final kick with Grace Schager of Glenbard North running 4:53.38 (IL #2) to win the race with her nearest competition only a second away from her. Catie McCabe of Hinsdale Central ran an indoor personal best of 4:53.97 (IL #3) to finish second just ahead of Rachel Soukup of Prairie Ridge who ran 4:54.03 (IL #4).

Annika Swan of St. Ignatius Prep lowered her personal best down to 4:56.18 (IL #6) to finish fourth overall. Anna Harden of Hersey was next in fifth with a 4:56.67 time. Catherine Sommerfeld of Lyons Township ran 4:57.90 (IL #7) to finish sixth. Sarah Fischer of Hinsdale Central (5:03.25, IL #8) and Lily Ginsberg of Prospect (5:03.65, IL #10) finished seventh and eighth.

Rylee Lydon of Prairie Ridge is multi-event specialist who is willing tackling any event. Lydon formerly ran on the Prairie Ridge cross-country team. Her win in the 800 Meter Run showed her strength. Lydon just missed Michaela Hackbarth’s seven year old meet record running 2:15.83 (IL #4) to claim the event title. Isabella Orozco of Aurora Central Catholic ran 2:18.28 (IL #10) to finish second. Catherine Hany of Hersey was the only other runner under 2:20 in this race as she ran a 2:19.00 time to finish third.

Meg Peterson and Hailey Erickson of Prospect on Monday were running fast 800’s for their team in the Mustang Relays. They used that speed in the end of the 3200 Meter Run to take the first two places. Peterson ran 10:57.63 (IL #7) to claim the win with her teammate Erickson running 10:58.95 (IL #8) to finish second. Brittney Burak of Huntley was just under 11-minutes running 10:59.51 (IL #10) to finish third.

Four of the next five finishers were from Naperville North. Shania Tandon finished fourth (11:07.52) followed by Minooka’s Gabriella McCollum (11:08.92). Julie Piot finished sixth (11:09.41) followed by Naperville North teammates Logan Brennan (11:15.10) and Rianna Tandon (11:18.02).

It was a tight final section of the 3200 Meter Run with the first five finishers within three seconds of each other. New Trier sophomore Ben Crane claimed the win with a 9:25.20 personal best (IL #10). Dale Johnson of Sterling finished second (9:26.79) followed by Owen Forberg of Richards (9:28.06), Oscar Dueno-Alda of New Trier (9:28.68) and Tommy Nitz of Huntley (9:28.79) placing third through fifth.
