Illinois High School Track & Field - Highlights from the Week - March 20, 2023

 

Summaries, highlights, and notes from a busy Illinois HS Track and Field weekend

Some schools competed in their final indoor meets for the 2023 season. There will be some schools and athletes that will go another week under roof to compete in the Illinois Top Times Championships beginning Friday inside the Shirk Center in Bloomington.

 

Here are highlights of some of the conference and invitationals that took place throughout Illinois in the last week.

 

BOYS CONFERENCE MEETS

West Suburban-Silver @ Proviso West (3/17) – Oak Park-River Forest repeated as Silver Division Conference team champions with 132 points. Lyons Township (108 points) and Downers Grove North (72 points) finished second and third in this seven team meet. The Huskies were led by Joshua Meister clearing 14-6 to win the Pole Vault. Gavin Schaer of York cleared 14-0 (3A #10) to finish second. In a close race in the 55 Meter Dash, Caleb Schulz ran 6.57 (3A #11) for the win just ahead of Proviso West’s Tervous Graves (3A #13 Tie). Schultz came back to run 22.67 to win the 200 Meter Dash. This meet again showed why this is one of the toughest distance conferences in the state. Liam Newhart of Oak Park-River Forest in his first race of the season in the 3200 Meter Run ran 9:28.48 (3A #12) to win the race just ahead of Jessie Gamboa of Hinsdale Central (9:31.17, 3A #17). Three of the top four times in the state in the 600 Meter Run came from this meet. Aden Bandukwala of Hinsdale Central pulled away in the final lap to run 1:21.01 to win the race and take away the tome time in the state in that distance. Aidan Hill of York ran 1:22.83 (IL #3) and Matthew McGovern of Lyons Township ran 1:23.25 (IL #4) to finish second and third. Earlier in the meet, Hill ran 1:57.55 to win the 800 Meter Run edging Ava Gaspar of Downers Grove North (1:57.56, 3A #15) and Grant Miller of Hinsdale Central (1:58.33, 3A #17). Michael Skora of Hinsdale Central took the lead with two laps left in the 1600 Meter Run before teammate Dan Watcke passed him. Watcke ran 4:19.60 (3A #4) to win the race running 58.9 in the final 400-meters. Skora ran 4:22.31 (3A #9) to finish second with Caden Weber of Downers Grove North running 4:25.27 to finish third. In the Frosh/Soph division of this meet, York took home the team title with 119.33 points followed by Oak Park-River Forest (93.5 points) and Lyons Township (77.83 points). Max Zangan led York by anchoring their quartet to a win in the 4x800m Relay and winning the 800m Run (2:09.75) and the 1600 Meter Run (4:39.11).

 

DuPage Valley @ North Central College Res/Rec Center (3/17) – Neuqua Valley scored in every event to win the Boys Conference title with 156.5 points. Naperville Central (101 points) and Naperville North (88 points) finished second and third. Two of the top sprinters in the state faced off Friday night with split results. Danny Eloe of Naperville North ran 6.45 to win the 55 Meter Dash. Austin Belle of Neuqua Valley ran 6.55 (3A #8) with Talen Tate of DeKalb running 6.56 (3A #9) to finish third. Belle, who has the top time in the state in the 200 Meter Dash came back to run 22.50 to win the event. Neuqua Valley’s Nick Pennington cleared 15-0.25 (3A #4) to win the Pole Vault. Andrew Tumminaro of DeKalb cleared 14-3.25 (3A #9) to finish second. Riley Newport of DeKalb pulled away in the final lap to run 1:56.18 to win the 800 Meter Run finishing ahead of Samuel Barnard of Naperville Central (1:57.72) and Austin McInturff of Waubonsie Valley (1:58.80). Foster Shelbert of Naperville Central, who earlier had run a 1:58 split to help his team win in the 4x800m Relay), came back to 50.58 (3A #3) to win the 400 Meter Dash. Neuqua Valley’s Tyrek Campbell ran 51.40 (3A #14) to finish second. Brody Squires of Waubonsie Valley jumped a personal best of 23-2.75 (3A #2) in winning the Long Jump. James Ammenhauser of Neuqua Valley jumped 22-10.75 (3A #3) to finish second. Ammenhauser came back to jump a second personal best of the meet with a 45-1.75 leap (3A #4) to win the Triple Jump. Neuqua Valley finished off the meet by running 3:30.16 (3A #4) to win the 4x400m Relay. Zac Close of Neuqua Valley ran 9:15.88 to win the 3200 Meter Run by 25 seconds ahead of DeKalb’s Jacob Barraza (9:40.45). Austin Brown of Metea Valley won the 1600 Meter run with a 4:25.41 personal best.

 

DuKane Conference @ Batavia High School (3/17) – Host Batavia dominated this meet scoring in 14 of the 15 scored events to win with 155 points. Lake Park (81 points) and Wheaton-Warrenville South (80 points) finished second and third. The Bulldogs were led by three multi-event winning athletes in this meet. The 55 Meter Dash produced some of the fastest times in the state this indoor season. The finish of the event went to a photo finish review. Batavia’s Weston White and Josh Evans of St. Charles East both ran 6.50 (3A #4 tie) with White getting the win. Da’jion Riley of Wheaton-Warrenville South had a 6.54 time (3A #7) to finish third. White came back to run 22.54 (3A #8) with teammate Nathan Whitwell finishing second (22.98). Both runners were part of the team’s quartet that ran 1:31.62 (3A #5) to win the 4x200m Relay. Quinton Lowe helped Batavia with two distance wins. Lowe ran 9:39.91 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Lucas Yonker of Wheaton-Warrenville South running a personal best of 9:41.28 to finish second. Lowe came back to run 4:25.79 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Nathan Virginelli of Wheaton-Warrenville South (4:26.27) and Mitch Garcia of St. Charles East (4:27.99) finishing second and third. Lowe was also a part of Batavia’s team that ran 3:33.69 to win the 4x400m Relay. Batavia’s Alec Crum won three field events. The senior clear 6-5 (3A #8 tie) to win the High Jump. Crum jumped 21-11.25 to win the Long Jump. He came back to jump 44-8.5 (3A #6) to win the Triple Jump. Tyler Michelini of Lake Park established a new personal best of 62-3 (3A #2) to win the Shot Put.

 

Nagel-Saylor MSL @ North Central College Res/Rec Center (3/18) – Prospect scored 117 points to win the meet title finishing ahead of Schaumburg (105 points) and Hersey (79 points). Schaumburg swept the sprint events with Omarion Jones running 6.60 to win the 55 Meter Dash. Alex Valencia ran 51.59 to win the 400 Meter Dash. The two athletes finished 1-2 in the 200 Meter Dash with Valencia winning (23.15) ahead of Jones (23.33). Fremd ran 8:07.54 (3A #6) to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Prospect (8:10.97, 3A #13). It was close in the 3200 Meter Run as Mario Torres of Buffalo Grove ran 9:22.39 (3A #8) for the win with Vijay Krishnamoorthi of Conant (9:22.96, 3A #9) and Liam Naughton of Hersey (9:29.90, 3A #16) finishing second and third. Theo Cunningham of Fremd ran 4:22.11 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Naughton (4:22.36, 3A #10), Carter Hayes of Palatine (4:24.42, 3A #15), Rory Gaan of Fremd (4:24.82, 3A #18), and Torres (4:24.92, 3A #19). Luke Holtmeier of prospect won both horizontal jumps events with a 20-10.5 mark to win the Long Jump and 42-5.5 best to win the Triple Jump.

 

Southwest Prairie @ Lewis University, Romeoville (3/17) – Plainfield South edged Plainfield North 102-97 to the Boys Varsity title. Minooka scored 84 points to finish third. The sprints were on fire in this meet. Billy Bailey Jr. of Joliet West ran 6.46 (3A #2) to win the 55 Meter Dash ahead of Minooka’s Cael Hiser (6.47, 3A #3) and Samuel Drey (6.57, 3A #10). The order changed in the 200 Meter Dash as Hiser took home the win with a 22.47 (3A #4) time. Bailey Jr ran 22.58 (3A #11) to finish second. Hiser and Drey were part of Minooka’s quartet that ran 1:32.03 to win the 4x200m Relay. Darvell Smith of Minooka ran 7.88 (3A #4) in the prelims of the 55 Meter Dash. Smith ran 7.94 to win in the finals ahead of Demir Ashiru of Plainfield North (8.01, 3A #9). Distance power Plainfield South won all four distance events. The Cougars ran 8:04.22 to win the 4x800m Relay with Minooka running 8:18.68 to finish second. Dylan Maloney ran a personal best of 9:20.28 (3A #6) to win the 3200 Meter Run with Oliver Burns of Plainfield North running 9:22.21 (3A #7) finishing second. Camyn Viger of Plainfield South edged Plainfield North’s Owen Stahl by five hundredth of a second in winning the 800 Meter Run. Viger’s winning time was 1:59.66. Ethan Reynoso was the fourth winner for South running 4:21.77 (3A #7) to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Parker Nold of Oswego East (4:23.51, 3A #14) and Viger (4:25.05). Kyle Eppenstein of Plainfield South cleared 13-7 to win the Pole Vault. Ehi Ogbomo had a 44-0.25 leap (3A #12 tie) to win the Triple Jump.

 

Southwest Suburban @ Olivet Nazarene Univ. (3/17) – Homewood-Flossmoor dominated this meet scoring in all but two of the 15 events contested. The Vikings scored 140 to easily claim the conference title ahead of Lincoln-Way East (69 points) and Andrew (60 points). Homewood-Flossmoor got started in this meet with the farthest jump in the state this season in the Long Jump. Junior Sochim Ozoh jumped 23-9 to win the individual title with teammate Aaron McIntyre jumping 22-0.5 (3A #20) to finish second. The Vikings also swept the sprint events. John Gore ran 6.99 to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of Austin Roswell of Lincoln-Way West (7.02, 3A #7) and Da’Nari Bowden of Homewood-Flossmoor (7.08, 3A #12 tie). Robert Scott III of Homewood-Flossmoor ran 22.48 (3A #5 tie) to win the 200 Meter Dash with teammate Olusoga Adeyiga a close second with a 22.51 time (3A #7). Adeyiga, Scott III, Gore and Andrew Mitchell ran a state leading 1:30.39 to win the 4x200m Relay with Andrew at 1:32.72 (3A #15) and Bradley-Bourbonnais at 1:33.08 (3A #16) finishing second and third. The Vikings also ran 3:30.29 (3A #5) to win the 4x400m Relay ahead of Bradley-Bourbonnais (3:31.13, 3A #7). Sandburg ran 8:09.81 (3A #10) to win the 4x800m Relay with Bolingbrook finishing second (8:09.81). Trent Anderson and Grant Giblin, who were part of the winning relay, came back to finish 1-2 in the 1600 Meter Run. Anderson ran 4:25.65 for the win ahead of Giblin (4:27.29) and Bradley-Bourbonnais’ Jeremiah Lanum (4:27.34).

 

Chicago Public League Indoors @ Gately Park, Chicago (3/18) – Some great performances gave Kenwood the city indoor championship with 129 points. Lane Tech (89 points) and Whitney Young (52 points) finished second and third. Sidney Morris had a big meet for Kenwood winning the three sprint events. Norris started by running 7.12 to just finish ahead of Lane Tech’s Demastanis Nikopoulos (7.15) to win the 60 Meter Dash. Morris’ second win came when he ran the fastest Class 3A time of 49.98 to win the 400 Meter Dash. His teammate Jahad Henderson ran 51.14 (3A #11) to finish second. Morris finished his day running 22.29 (3A #3) to win the 200 Meter Dash. The closest meet of the day was the 800 Meter Run where Landan Gillespie of Kenwood ran 1:54.46 (3A #2) for the win edging Michael Polizzi of Taft by one hundredth of a second (1:54.47, 3A #3). . Kenwood captured two of the three relay titles in this meet running 1:30.88 (3A #3) to win the 4x200m Relay finishing ahead of Lane Tech (1:31.91, 3A #8). Kenwood then ran 3:31.14 to win the 4x400m Relay finishing ahead of Taft (3:31.35, 3A #9).

 

Chicago Catholic League @ Gately Park, Chicago (3/19) – Loyola Academy dominated this meet on Sunday scoring 121 points to win the indoor league championship. St. Ignatius College Prep (86 points) and Mt. Carmel (77 points) finished second and third. Jaden Bossie of Mt. Carmel ran 8.22 (2A #2)in the prelims, 8.23 in the finals to win the 60 Meter Hurdles. Mt. Carmel’s Jermaine Hampton ran 7.01 (2A #7) to win ahead of Bossie (7.06, 2A #11 tie) in the 60 Meter Dash. Mac Kittrell of DePaul College Prep won the 3200 Meter Run with a time of 9:29.09 (2A #7). Nate McKillop of Fenwick ran 9:42.74 (2A #11) to finish second. DePaul’s Charlie Richardson ran 1:56.63 (2A #2) to win the 800 Meter Run with Thomas Fitzpatrick of St. Ignatius Prep (1:57.08, 3A #13) and William Simon of Loyola (1:57.41, 3A #15) finished second and third. Grayden Rill of Fenwick ran 4:22.95 to win the 1600 Meter Run finishing ahead of Richardson (4:27.54) and Fitzpatrick (4:29.95). Enoch Appiah-Kubi of Loyola had a 45-8.75 jump (3A #2) to win the Triple Jump.

 

WSC-Gold @ Willowbrook (3/17) – Downers Grove South claimed the Gold division title with 165 points ahead of Willowbrook (116 points) and Hinsdale South (89 points). Carter Smott of Downers Grove South ran a personal best of 9:38.69 to win the 3200 Meter Run on this 160m track by 38 seconds. Luke Spear also helped in the Mustangs win jumping 22-3.75 (3A #12 tie) to win the Long Jump.

 

Upstate Eight @ Glenbard East (3/17) – Glenbard South scored in 10 of 16 events to win the conference title with 116 points. Glenbard East (100.5 points) and Elgin (96 points) finished second and third. South’s Harper Bryan was a double winner running 8.18 to win the 55m High Hurdles and 7.78 to win the 55m Low Hurdles. Bryan was also a part of Glenbard South’s relay that ran 1:38.92 to win the 4x200m Relay. Dawayne Evans of Elgin jumped 22-8.75 (3A #4) to win the Long Jump.

 

Central Suburban League South @ Evanston Township (3/17) – New Trier captured the divisional title with 140 points. Host Evanston Township scored 118 points to finish second ahead of Glenbrook South (82 points). Miles Granjean had a big day for Evanston winning four individual events. The senior ran 7.59 to win the 55m High Hurdles. He also ran 7.42 to win the 55m Low Hurdles with Chris Rodriguez of Niles West just five hundredth of a second behind. Granjean was also masterful in the sprints running 6.65 to win the 55 Meter Dash and 23.64 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

 

Central Suburban League North @ Niles West (3/17) – Highland Park scored 151 points to win the North divisional title with Vernon Hills (124 points) and Deerfield (77 points) finishing second and third. Highland Park went 1-2 in all three distance events. Nate Wehner ran 9:38.42 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Brian Hatoum finishing second (9:39.82). Wehner came back to run 4:31.09 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Barak Goldstein giving Highland Park another second-place finish (4:32.49). Goldstein earlier ran 2:01.91 to win the 800 Meter Run with teammate Noah Jackson finishing second (2:03.77). Doug Anderson of Highland Park was the other multi winner in this meet running 52.81 to win the 400 Meter Dash and 23.01 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

 

Big 12 Conference @ Shirk Center (3/14) – Normal West claimed top honors in this meet scoring 94 points for the team win. Bloomington (76 points) and Normal Community (70 points) finished second and third. Alex Sohn of Normal Community in his first meet after the New Balance Nationals Indoor had a then personal best of 63-4.75 to win the Shot Put. Matthew Thomas of Danville was a double winner running 8.50 to win the 60 Meter Hurdles and also cleared 13-11.75 to win the Pole Vault. Chris Taylor of Normal West cleared a Class 3A leading 6-8 to win the High Jump.

 

GIRLS CONFERENCE MEETS

West Suburban-Silver @ York (3/17) – Host York edged Hinsdale Central 120-118 for the team title in this keenly contested meet. Downers Grove North scored 111 points to finish third. Freshman Morgan Navarre helped York to the win running 41.78 (3A #2) to win the 300 Meter Dash and 1:00.72 to win the 400 Meter Dash. The race the clinched the conference team win for York was when Elaine Paul ran 25.73 (3A #11) and Katelyn Pratt ran 26.36 to finish 1-2 in the 200 Meter Dash. Paul also cleared 10-8.75 to win the Pole Vault. Four teams were under 9:50 in the 4x800m Relay. Downers Grove North ran 9:30.18 to win the race ahead of York (9:42.04), Glenbard West (9:48.51), and Lyons Township (9:49.24). Catherine Sommerfeld of Lyons Township ran 10:45.58 (3A #4) to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Bria Bennis of York (10:46.17), Sarah Fischer of Hinsdale Central (10:56.46, 3A #8), and Katherine Klimek of York (10:58.34, 3A #10). Fischer came back to run 5:06.53 to edge Lily Eddington of Downers Grove North (5:06.71, 3A #18) and Bennis (5:07.55, 3A #19) to win the 1600 Meter Run. Catie McCabe of Hinsdale Central continues to shine in her senior season running 2:13.90 (IL #3) to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Brooke Berger of York (2:17.32, 3A #7), Sarah Skora of Hinsdale Central (2:17.57, 3A #9), and Ava Gilley of Downers Grove North (2:17.94, 3A #10). McCabe was part of the Hinsdale Central quartet that ran 4:02.98 (3A #2) to win the 4x400m Relay with York (4:09.34) and Lyons Township (4:10.57) finishing second and third.

 

Nagel-Saylor MSL @ North Central College Res/Rec Center (3/18) – Prospect was in complete control of this meet scoring 144.5 points for the win. Barrington (79.5 points) and Hersey (63.5 points) were the next two team finishers. Prospect’s strength came from the distance events. The Lady Knights ran 9:29.51 to win the 4x800m Relay with Hailey Ericson, Sophie Fransen, Cameron Kalaway, and Meg Peterson part of their quartet. Barrington (9:41.63, 3A #12) finished second. Anna Harden of Hersey won the 3200 Meter Run by 35 seconds with a 10:55.23 (3A #6) winning time. Three runners were under five-minutes in the 1600 Meter Run. Scout Storms of Barrington ran 4:56.41 to edge Meg Peterson of Prospect (4:56.52, 3A #8) to win the 160 Meter Run. Harden ran 4:57.23 to finish second. Lily Ginsberg ran 2:14.41 (3A #3) to win the 800 Meter Run with teammate Veronica Znajda running 2:18.79 (3A #13) to finish second. Conant freshman Daisha Brunson had a great meet winning two individual races. Brunson ran 7.22 (3A #4) to claim the win in the 55 Meter Dash. She came back to run 25.29 (3A #5) to win the 200 Meter Dash with Charlotte Denies of Prospect running 25.63 (3A #7) to finish second.

 

DuPage Valley @ North Central College Res/Rec Center (3/16) – Naperville Central scored 139.5 points to win the conference title with Neuqua Valley second with a close 125 points. Both teams scored in all 15 events. Zawadi Brown of Neuqua Valley was in the meet’s spotlight winning four individual events. Brown started by jumping an indoor personal best of 18-8.75 (3A #3) to win the Long Jump. On the track, the junior started by running 7.19 (3A #3) to win the 55 Meter Dash with Kyla Harris of Metea Valley running 7.30 (3A #3) to finish second. Brown’s third win came when she ran 58.55 (3A #5) to win the 400 Meter Dash with Harris again finishing second (59.14, 3A #6). The two runners also finished 1-2 in the 200 Meter Dash. Brown ran 25.72 (3A #10) for the win with Harris running 26.11 to finish second. Naperville Central’s Brooke Sawatzky was also a double winner running 8.87 to win the 55 Meter Hurdles and jumping 37-7.75 to win the Triple Jump. Naperville Central got a 1-2 finish in the 800 Meter Run as Addison George claimed the win (2:20.31, 3A #19) ahead of teammate Abby Mogg (2:20.49, 3A #20). Liv Phillips of Naperville Central ran 5:05.67 (3A #17) to win the 1600 Meter Run. Four seconds separated the first three finishers in the 3200 Meter Run. Ava Hendren of Naperville Central ran 11:07.09 (3A #20) to claim the win just ahead Shania Tandon of Naperville North (11:08.90). Carissa Hamilton of Neuqua Valley finished third (11:11.08). This was the first race for Hamilton since an injury sidelined her for most of last fall’s cross-country season.

 

DuKane Conference @ Batavia (3/18) – Batavia repeated as indoor conference champion scoring 152 points for the win ahead of Lake Park (99 points) and Glenbard North (63 points). Grace Schager of Glenbard North was one of the athletes to come away with a multiple event win. Schager ran 2:17.95 (3A #11) to win the 800 Meter Run. She came back to run 5:02.78 almost lapping the field to win the 1600 Meter Run. Serena Vulaono won three events for Lake Park in this meet. The senior had a 35-8.75 personal best to win the Shot Put. She then went to the track where she ran 7.24 (3A #5) to win the 55 Meter Dash. Her third win came when she ran 25.97 (3A #16) to win the 200 Meter Dash. Bridget Kosky of Batavia won two events jumping 17-5 to win the Long Jump and jumping 35-11 to win the Triple Jump.

 

GCAC Indoor Championships @ Gately Park, Chicago (3/17) – Loyola Academy was in complete control of this conference meet scoring 161 points to easily win the team title ahead of St. Ignatius Prep (111 points). Montini Catholic scored 56 points to finish third. Ellen Gundlach of Loyola Academy was the meet’s big individual winner taking home three individual field event titles. Gundlach and Laura Murphy of Trinity both cleared 4-11.75 in the High Jump. Gundlach won on fewer misses. Gundlach also jumped 16-7.5 to win the Long Jump and 33-6.25 to win the Triple Jump. Gabrielle Walker of DePaul College Prep also was a multiple event winner. Walker won a close race in the 800 Meter Run. The junior was timed in 2:15.08 (2A #2) to win the 800 Meter Run with St. Ignatius Prep’s Annika Swan running 2:15.13 (3A #4) finishing second. Walker came back to run 58.85 (2A #2) to win the 400 Meter Dash. It was an indoor personal best for Walker. Swan came back to run 4:57.76 to win the 1600 Meter Run just ahead of Jane Lynch of Loyola Academy who ran 4:59.91 (3A #10). Lynch had earlier run 11:24.11 to win the 3200 Meter Run finishing eight seconds ahead of Montini freshman Sydney Gersten (11:32.92, 2A #9).

 

Big 12 Conference @ Shirk Center (3/13) – A day after returning from Boston as a national champion, Allison Ince was back on the track helping her team win a conference title. Normal Community scored 104.5 to win the team title finishing ahead of Peoria Richwoods (88 points) and Danville (72 points). Ince competed in three events first anchoring her team to the win in the 4x800m Relay (10:09.27). The national champion ran 5:13.66 to win the 1600 Meter Run by 20 seconds. She anchored Normal to the win in the 4x400m Relay (4:09.63). Lena Jackson of Peoria Richwoods ran 7.78 (2A #4) to win the 60 Meter Dash with Izzy Roundtree of Champaign Central timed at 7.87 (2A #11) to finish second. Jackson came back to run 26.30 (2A #11) to win the 200 Meter Dash.

 

Southwest Suburban @ Olivet Nazarene Univ (3/18) – Homewood-Flossmoor repeated as indoor conference champions scoring 138.5 points. Lincoln-Way East finished second (109.5 points) ahead of Sandburg (77 points). Angela Alozie led the Vikings sweeping the three sprint events. The senior ran a personal best of 7.92 (3A #17) to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of Kristyn Johnson of Bolingbrook (8.00). Alozie then ran 56.85 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Bolingbrook’s Chineye Ifeajekwu ran 59.19 (3A #7) finished second. Alozie competed the triple by running 25.60 to win the Triple Jump with Johnson again finishing second (26.09, 3A #19). Bolingbrook ran 1:44.55 (3A #3) to edge Homewood-Flossmoor (1:44.99) in winning the 4x200m Relay. Homewood-Flossmoor’s Caroline Schoen was a double winner running 2:21.51 to win the 800 Meter Run. Schoen came back to run 5:22.58 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Madeline Mellin of Bradley-Bourbonnais ran 5:25.91 to finish second in that race. Mellin earlier ran 11:21.19 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Ana-Liese Torian ran an IL #2 8.47 time to win the 60 Meter Hurdles by more than a second. Asha Pierre-Antoine of Lincoln-Way East jumped 36-4.5 to win the Triple Jump by a quarter of an inch ahead of Kamile Bickute of Lockport.

 

Chicago Public League @ Gately Park, Chicago (3/18) – Whitney Young edged Kenwood 111-100 for the Girls City championship. Kenwood’s Asia Thomas won the three sprint events in this meet. She started by running 7.58 to win the 60 Meter Dash ahead of Symone Frison from Lindblom (7.78). Thomas won the 400 Meter Dash (58.12) by more than a second ahead of teammate Harmony Brown (59.76, 3A #11 tie). Thomas’ third win came when she ran 24.63 to win the 200 Meter Dash with teammate Jaliyah Shepard running 25.20 (3A #3) to finish second. Thomas also anchored Kenwood to the win in the 4x400m Relay with a 4:06.12 time. Whitney Young ran 4:08.33 (3A #9) to finish second. Jade Lavallee was a double winner in the distance events. Lavallee and teammate Nikki Chopra both ran 11:31 to finish 1-2 in the 3200 Meter Run with Olivia Ide of Lane Tech just a second behind in third. Lavallee came back to run 5:18.52 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

Southwest Prairie Conference @ Lewis University, Romeoville (3/18) – Plainfield North edged Oswego East 89-80 for the team title. Minooka (73 points) and Plainfield East (70 points finished third and fourth. Jahnel Bowman of Plainfield South jumped 37-8 to win the Triple Jump by less than an inch ahead of Elissa Perkins of Plainfield East (37-7.25).  Perkins came back to jump 18-3 to win the Long Jump with Bowman jumping 18-0.5 to finish second. Bowman’s second win came when she ran 25.73 (3A #12) to win the 200 Meter Dash. Audra Soderlind of Oswego ran 11:23.05 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Gabrielle Kics of Minooka running 11:34.92 to finish second. Gabriella McCollom of Minooka ran 5:15.59 to edge Soderlind by nine hundredth of a second to win the 1600 Meter Run. Ava Mabry-Spencer of Plainfield East ran a personal best of 7.33 (3A #11) to win the 55 Meter Dash. Mabry Spencer was part of Plainfield East’s win in the 4x200m Relay (1:47.92) just one hundredth of a second ahead of Plainfield North (1:47.93). Plainfield North won the other two relays contested in this meet. The Tigers ran 9:38.02 (3A #7) to win the 4x800m Relay. They came back to run 4:07.71 in winning the 4x400m Relay.

 

Central Suburban North @ Maine East (3/16) – Vernon Hills scored 138.5 points to win the North divisional team title ahead of Highland Park (107.5 points) and Maine West (90 points). Anna Todd was a double winner for Vernon Hills running 11:50.99 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 5:39.02 to win the 1600 Meter Run. Julia Rausa also won two events for the Cougars. The freshman cleared 4-11.75 to win the High Jump and ran 6.62 to win the 50 Yard Dash. Jaclyn Riedl of Maine West had a personal best put of 40-0 (3A #4) to win the Shot Put.

 

Central Suburban South @ Glenbrook South (3/16) – Maine South edged New Trier 137-133.5 for the South division team title. Maeve Kelly of New Trier had a season best mark of 37-11 (3A #12) to win the Shot Put. Maine South ran 9:38.62 (3A #9) to win the 4x800m Relay in a race run on a 160-meter track.

 

West Suburban Gold @ Proviso West (3/18) – Downers Grove South scored 172 points to once again win the Gold Division title ahead of Hinsdale South (108 points) and Willowbrook (90 points). Mariah Gonzalez was a double winner for South starting with a 7.38 time to win the 55 Meter Dash ahead of Morton’s Juliyah Dailey (7.46). Gonzalez also ran 27.32 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Nora Joy was a also a double event winner for the Mustangs running 2:29.71 to win the 800 Meter Run and 5:36.39 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

INVITATIONALS

adidas Indoor Nationals @ Virginia Beach (3/17-3/19) – The big news that came for Illinois viewers in this meet came from Rylee Lydon of Prairie Ridge. The senior, who will attend Texas A&M this fall, scored 3844 points to win the Indoor Pentathlon in this meet. It is the highest score in the nation this indoor by almost 300 points and the sixth highest score all-time. Lydon’s score is an all-time record for Illinois athletes. The senior had the top performance in four of the five events in this competition. She cleared a state leading 5-9 in the High Jump, jumped 18-3.25 in the Long Jump, had a 34-7 effort in the Shot Put, finished sixth in the 60 Meter Hurdles with a 9.47 time, and ran 2:19.58 with the top time in the 800 Meter Run.

 

Gene Armer Invitational @ U of I Armory (3/18) – Alex Sohn of Normal Community ended his great week of competitions with a state leading performance again in the Shot Put. Sohn had a best put of 63-7.5 to win the event. Dylon Nalley of Marion competed in his first 3200 Meter Run of the season by running 9:31.28 (2A #9) to win ahead of Logan Beckmeier of Arthur-Lovington and his 9:35.48 time (1A #3). Daniel Lacy of Champaign Centennial was a double winner in the Boys portion of the meet running a Class 3A leading time of 6.89 to win the 60 Meter Dash. Lacy followed by running 21.95 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Cabott Craft of St. Thomas More jumped a personal best and a Class 1A leading 46-5 to win the Triple Jump. Jackson Gilbert of Urbana easily won the 400 Meter Dash with a finishing time of 49.29 (2A #2). In the Girls Meet, Hannah Meiser of Civic Memorial ran 5:19.30 (2A #13) to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

Pontiac Boys Invitational @ Shirk Center (3/16) – The busy week continued for Normal Community’s Alex Sohn back in the ring in the Shirk Center. In his third meet within a week, Sohn had a best of 62-5.25 to win the Shot Put. It was his second mark in the week that exceeded the 61-10.25 effort from the New Balance Nationals Indoor. The other big performance came from Isaiah Whitaker of Bloomington Central Catholic in the Pole Vault. The freshman cleared a state leading 16-8 to win the Pole Vault. It was an all-time best for an Illinois freshman athlete. It currently ranks #6 nationally. Dylan Bazzell of Prairie Central and Drew Tucker of Metamora both cleared 6-6 (2A #3) to tie for the win in the High Jump. Bazzell also ran 8.42 (2A #4) to win the 60 Meter Hurdles. Malik Allen of Edwardsville jumped a Class 3A best of 45-10 to win the Triple Jump ahead of teammate Gino Montgomery (44-0.25, 3A #12).

 

Mt. Zion Girls Mini-Meet (3/16) – Tuscola’s Lia Patterson was a double winner in this meet. The sophomore ran 26.58 (1A #4) to win the 200 Meter Dash. Patterson also ran 9.68 (1A #4 tie) to win the 60 Meter Hurdles. Colleen Zeibert of Rochester ran 5:15.38 (2A #5) to win the 1600 Meter Run winning by 13 seconds.

 

Lady Wildcat Invitational @ Shirk Center (3/15) – This meet was a change of pace for Allison Ince of Normal Community as she concentrated on the sprints in this meet. Ince competed in the 200 Meter Dash running 26.10 (3A #20) to win the event ahead of Anna Barr of Normal University (2A #12). Barr also ran 9.02 to win the 60 Meter Hurdles. Sophia Ramirez of Washington ran 2:21.55 to win the 800 Meter Run by more than six seconds. Nora Brady of Bloomington Central Catholic ran 5:16.28 (1A #2) to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

M-R Titan Indoor @ Monmouth College (3/15)Eden Mueller of Mercer County had one of the best performances of this meet running 5:19.42 (1A #4) to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

Bloomington Girls Invitational @ Shirk Center (3/18) – Allison Ince anchored Normal Community to two big relay performances. Normal Community ran 9:32.03 (3A #6) to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Washington (9:51.47, 3A #20). The Ironmen came back to run 4:03.47 (3A #3) to win the 4x400m Relay. Natalie Bierbaum of Normal University ran a personal best of 11:04.42 (2A #2) to win the 3200 Meter Run.

 

D117 Boys Last Chance @ McKay Center, Lakes (3/17) – Bjorn Carlson of Rockford Christian had great meet running the fastest Class 1A time of 50.49 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Carlson also ran 23.16 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Carlson’s teammate Aidan Sosnowski ran an open best of 2:00.50 (1A #6) to win the 800 Meter Run finishing ahead of Tommy Nitz of Huntley (2:00.73). Dylan Myers of Lake Zurich ran 9:33.98 in winning the 3200 Meter Run ahead of teammate Cole Boudreault (9:46.10). Trey Sato of Grayslake Central ran 4:23.33 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

 

D117 Girls Last Chance @ McKay Center, Lakes (3/18) – The Girls took center stage in this facility on Saturday. Catherine Guckenberger of Grayslake Central ran 7.93 to edge Riley Betz of Lake Zurich (7.95, 3A #20) to win the 60 Meter Dash. Guckenberger came back to run 26.55 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Abrielle Artley of Evanston ran an indoor best of 56.90 (3A #3) to win the 400 Meter Dash. Artley also ran 9.28 (3A #6 in winning the 60 Meter Hurdles ahead of Mauricia Harris of Thornwood (9.38, 3A #10). The distance races were great in this meet. Rachel Soukup of Prairie Ridge ran 10:46.94 ( 3A #5) to win the 3200 Meter Run with Danielle Jensen of McHenry running 11:03.81 (3A #19) to finish second. Bella Domier of Grayslake Central ran 2:16.94 (3A #6) to finish ahead of Alyssa Moore of McHenry (2:17.45) to win the 800 Meter Run. Stella Davis of Evanston ran 5:04.85 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of McHenry’s Lynda Rotundo (5:17.27) and Jensen (5:21.65).

 

CHS Girls Last Chance @ Burlington Central (3/18)Louisa Diamond of Benet Academy was a double distance winner first running 10:57.77 (2A #2) to win the 3200 Meter Run. Breanna Burak of Huntley ran 11:03.03 (3A #17) to finish second. Diamond came back to run a solo 5:17.95 (2A #9) to win the 1600 Meter Run. Alexandra Johnson of Huntley and her sister Dominique switched places in the two horizontal events. Alexandria jumped 19-4.75 to win the Long Jump ahead of Dominique’s 18-4.75 jump. The places switched in the Triple Jump as Dominique jumped a seasonal best and tied her sister for the best jump in the state (40-2.25) to win the event. Alexandria jumped 39-9.25 to place second.
