Sundara Weber of Sandwich took advantage of the near perfect conditions to run away with the win at the Girls High School Division of Detweiller at Dark Friday evening.
The junior showed that she is having a good summer of training setting a new meet records on this course. Weber ran 16:32.2 to claim the win by more than 45 seconds ahead of Ava Jarrell of Warsaw IN (17:19.10). Weber’s improvement from last year’s meet is remarkable. Weber ran 18:01.7 in last year’s meet to finish third behind Liv Phillips who ran 17:21. Weber went on to run 16:40 to finish third in the 2A State Meet.
There was no real drama up front in the first mile of the race. Weber passed through the first mile in 5:26 with Jarrell close to five seconds back.
It was not that Weber made a surge after the mile to take command of the race. She just maintained the pace she was running while the rest of the field fell behind. Weber ran the second mile of the race in 5:32 to open a 30 second lead on Jarrell who passed the 2-mile point in 11:30. Weber maintained that pace running 5:33 to the finish.
