Illinois High School XC Roadmap to the Weekend - October 4, 2024
By Michael Newman
The cover photo for this piece shows Dylan Jacobs photo bombing a Mundelein team picture on his way to running 13:57.5 to win the Boys race at the Peoria Central Invitational in 2017. It remains the fastest non-state meet time ever run on this course.
The times will not be that fast at Detweiller Park in the four races taking place on that course for the Peoria meet. We will have to wait until Saturday night in Terre Haute to see some great times run by Illinois runners.
This is the weekend for BIG meets across the state as teams start to gear up for conference and then state series meets. Here is a look at some previews of some of those meets.
Nike XC Town Twilight @ Levern Gibson XC Course, Terre Haute IN Illinois Schools Boys Open Blue #1: Belleville (Althoff Catholic), Champaign (Centennial), Dieterich, LaGrange (Lyons) JV, Marshall, Mt. Prospect (Prospect) JV, O’Fallon JV, Olney (Richland County) JV Boys Open Blue #2: Benton, Charleston, Danville, Effingham (St. Anthony), Marion, Olney Richland County), Peoria (Notre Dame), Urbana (University). Boys Junior Varsity: Danville, Dieterich, Palatine (Fremd), St. Joseph-Ogden JV Boys Red Open (Friday): Chrisman, Louisville (North Clay). Girls Open Blue: Belleville (Althoff Catholic), Benton, Charleston, Dieterich, Effingham (St. Anthony), Olney (Richland County), Urbana (University). Girls Junior Varsity: Danville, Dieterich Girls Red Open (Friday): Chrisman, Louisville (North Clay)
Boys Race of Champions: #4 Plainfield South, #6 Winnetka (New Trier), #7 Palatine (Fremd) #13 Mt. Prospect (Prospect), #14 O’Fallon, #17 LaGrange (Lyons), 1A #15 St. Joseph-Ogden, 1A #23 Georgetown (Notre Dame de la Sallette) Runners to Watch: Ben Crane-Winnetka (New Trier); Dylan Maloney-Plainfield (South); Zach Thoman-O’Fallon; Gabriel McLain-Benton: Brayden Kloeppel-O’Fallon; Jack Jennings-Palatine (Fremd). Girls Race of Champions: #4 Mt. Prospect (Prospect), 1A #5 Peoria (Notre Dame); Olney (Richland County), St. Joseph-Ogden. Runners to Watch: Isabella Keller-Effingham (St. Anthony); Veronica Znajda-Mt. Prospect (Prospect); Annika Swan-Chicago (St. Ignatius College Prep); Meg Peterson-Mt. Prospect (Prospect: Molly Farrell-Marshall; Aubrey Denning-Effingham (St. Anthony); Madeleine Fox-Marshall Notes: This meet gives Illinois teams a chance to compare themselves against other Midwest and some national teams on the course that will host the NXR Midwest Regional on November 17. Evan Noonan of Dana Hills CA will lead his team into Terre Haute as one of the individual favorites in the Boys race. Noonan ran 14:04 for 3-miles at Woodbridge. Lily Adler of Timpview UT ran 15:28 while teammate Jane Hedengren ran 15:36 two weeks ago at Woodbridge and will be runners to watch in the front. You can see the preview from DyeStat.com HERE.
Isabella Keller ran in this meet last September finishing third in the Race of Champions. She ran 15:59 last week at St. Joseph-Ogden and will be in the mix for another top finish. Veronica Znajda and Annika Swan finished 2-3 at both Lake Park and then at Peoria two weeks ago both running under 17-minutes. You can expect these two runners to be in the mix for a top finish. Meg Peterson and Molly Farrell could be among the runners you see finishing in the top 15. Prospect came to this meet last year ending up winning the title. Znajda, Peterson, and Ireland Wildhart will give the Knights low points in the front. Watch to see where their 4-5 runners place in this race.
There was anticipation to see two of the top three runners in the state Ben Crane and Dylan Maloney race against each other last week in Peoria. Crane did not race in that meet. The two will challenge each other in the Boys Race of Champions. Crane ran 14:26 in near 90-degree heat in Peoria on September 14/ Maloney broke Josh Methner’s course record running 14:28 to win last week. Both will push each other to top five finishes in this race. Plainfield South ran well in the Palatine race last week and will look to duplicate that performance on Saturday night. Maloney will give his team small numbers in the front. The Cougars have been running a between 25 to 30 seconds on their second through fifth runners during the season and 50 seconds behind their leader. Those spreads need to diminish for this team to have a chance to win the race title. Fremd did not run their best race last week from Palatine and will improve on that performance. New Trier, Lyons Township, and O’Fallon could finish among the top 10 teams in this meet.
Wheaton North Falcon Classic @ St. James Farm, Wheaton Girls Teams: #2 Elmhurst (York), #7 Arlington Heights (Hersey), #15 Winnetka (New Trier), #20 Wheaton (North), #21 O’Fallon, #24 Lockport (Township), #25 Wilmette (Loyola Academy), #29 Oswego (East), 2A #4 Wheaton (St. Francis), 2A #11 Lisle (Benet Academy)| Aurora (Rosary), Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East), Geneva, Neenah WI, Oswego, St. Charles (East). Notes: 10 of the 16 teams in the meet are among the rankled teams in Class 3A. York is the class of the field and could win five of the seven championship flights in this meet. The championship race should be lights out with Karlin Janowski of York the runner to watch in this race after finishing second last week at Palatine. Delilah Helenhouse of Benet Academy is having a super senior season and will push the York freshman in this race. Erin Hinsdale of St. Francis, Jane Lynch of Loyola Academy, Madeline Bialko of Hersey, and Josie Cahill of New Trier are some of the runners to watch in this high-powered race.
Locktoberfest Invitational @ Dellwood Park, Lockport Boys Teams: #12 Naperville (Neuqua Valley), #19 Naperville (North), #20 Wheaton North, #23 New Lenox (Lincoln-Way Central), #25 Berwyn-Cicero (Morton), #28 Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West)| Bolingbrook JV, Chicago (Whitney Young), Chicago Heights (Bloom Township), Crete-Monee, Downers Grove (South), Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East), Joliet (Central), Lemont, Lincolnshire (Stevenson), New Lenox (Lincoln-Way West), Oak Lawn, Palos Heights (Shepard), Plainfield (East), Plainfield (South) JV, Riverside-Brookfield, Tinley Park. Notes: Lockport’s home course has been on their campus course. This home meet takes them to historic Dellwood Park and the rugged 5k course. Six ranked teams are in this meet led by DVC rivals Neuqua Valley and Naperville North. These two packing teams assure the results will be close. 300+ runners will be in the Varsity race. Alex Rodriguez of Berwyn-Cicero Morton would have been one of the race leaders, but he is not entered. The race is wide open with Sean Hanrahan of Lincoln-Way East, Nathan Gabriel of Joliet Central, Braden Hoff of Lincoln-Way Central, and Aidan Murphy of Wheaton North leading the front pack.
