2025 ILXCTF Cross Country Previews - IHSA Class 2A Girls Teams
By Michael Newman
There will be a new state team champion in Class 2A this fall after last year’s top two teams St. Ignatius College Prep and DePaul College Prep were moved to Class 3A for at least the next fall campaign. It opens the door for Chatham-Glenwood. The team suffered through injury and illness to still finish third in last year’s state meet. Their improvement during the track season and over the summer puts this team in position to win a state title. Wheaton St. Francis and their ninth-place finish from last year is not indicative of how talented this team is in this title chase. Former 3A school Normal Community West has a talented trio that could leave Peoria with a trophy. Washington again will be in the mix for a trophy. Normal University could also be in the mix if their top runner Natalie Bierbaum is healthy this fall.
Here is a look at the top Class 2A Teams along with some schools to watch for this season.
1 – Chatham-Glenwood Coach – Mike Garber 2024 Finish – 3rd, 2A State Central State Eight Conference
Runners – Ali Londrigan JR, Ashlyn Chopra SR, Ali Broaddus SO, Sophie Rentmeister JR, Brenna Sloman JR, Addie Hamrick JR, Hadley Sloman FR, Michelle Park SO, Grace Atkinson SO.
Preview – It was not the way that the Titans envisioned the 2024 season to end. Injuries and illnesses slowed this team down to where they still left Peoria with a third-place trophy. Now they would like to win their second state title in three years. Six runners are back from last year’s team. Ally Knudson, who was in the top five last year, will not run this fall.
“Our girls trained hard,” said their coach Mike Garber. “Maybe the best summer of running and lifting by a Glenwood girls team. There is something positive building around this squad. I'm excited to see how we progress through the season.” Everything starts with Ali Londrigan who again will be the team’s top runner. She struggled at the end of last fall ending up as the team’s third runner. Londrigan bounced back in a big way last spring all-state twice in Class 3A and is now hungry for more success. “Ali took it to the next level this summer,” said Garber. “We haven't discussed what could come in November, but my expectation is she should be challenging for an individual title as our team looks to return to the podium.”
Ashlyn Chopra took her next steps up last fall finishing 20th at state. Ali Broadnax, Sophie Rentmeister, and Brenna Sloman ran in the top five at some point during last season and again will have a tight pack behind the front two runners. There will be possibly three runners in the top 15 at state. The spread from two to five needs to be at 45 seconds. That could unlock the combination of winning another state title. “Everyone understands what their role is and how we can become better for each other throughout the season,” said Garber. “I'm excited for this group of girls.”
2 – Wheaton St. Francis Coach – Jason Accardi 2024 Finish – 9th, 2A State Girls Catholic Athletic Conference
Runners – Erin Hinsdale JR, Elena Mamminga JR, Margaret Andrzejewski SR, Abby Yarusso FR, Ashley Spahn SR, Sienna Schwan SR, Jessica Lankisch SR, Amelia Whitacre SR.
Preview – A team that I would keep a close eye on this season. The ninth-place finish from last year’s state meet is no indication of how talented this group is. The Spartans could place three runners in this year’s top ten. Erin Hinsdale and Elena Mamminga finished fourth and fifth in last year’s state meet. Margaret Andrzejewski missed two meets before sectionals. She fought to finish 46th. Before her absence, Andrzejewski was just 10 seconds behind the two. She ran 2:13.05 for all-state in the 800. That is why she could finish in the top 10 this year. Abby Yarusso is the newcomer that could give this team a boost after finishing eight in the IESA 2A State Meet. Ashley Spahn and Sienna Schwan will give this team strength in their top seven.
3 – Normal Community West Coach – Greg Rogers 2024 Finish – 9th, 3A Norm Comm Sec Big 12 Conference
Runners – Renee Warren SR, Julie Bach SR, Amanda Warren SR, Abigail Jackson JR, Kylie Zimmerman JR, Makayla Jackson SR, Rachel Russell SO, Ruby Bokus Carlson JR, Laina Fulkerson JR, Cloe Van Heuklon JR.
Preview – The Wildcats qualified three individuals to the state meet after the team finished ninth in the Class 3A Normal Sectional. West was moved down to Class 2A at the right time as they return their top six from that sectional team. Renee Warren missed all-state in 3A last year finishing 31st. Warren has continued to improve where she could finish in the top 15 in November. Julie Bach had a strong track season qualifying for state in both the 800 and the 1600. A good summer of training could bring her into a top 25 finish. Amanda Warren was within 15 seconds of Bach last fall in the state race and could be in the mix for all-state. This trio is tough and could boost West to some lofty goals. Abigail Jackson and Kylie Zimmerman give this team a strong fourth and fifth runners. The gap between their third and fourth runners at sectionals was 100 seconds. Watch for that spread to fall during this season.
4 – Washington Coach – Troy Walcott 2024 Finish – 6th, 2A State Mid Illini Conference
Runners – Sophia Ramirez SR, Maddie James SR, Caylie Ahten SR, Bailey Butler SR, Addison Hooste SR, Olivia Miklik SR, Lydia Engstrom SR, Rielle Beasley SO.
Preview – The Panthers will look to qualify for the state meet for the fourth straight year after finishing sixth in the 2A race last year. Sophia Ramirez again will be the top runner for Washington. She finished 25th last year with eyes on a top 15 finish. Maddie James and Caylie Ahten were within 60 seconds of Ramirez and will give the team a strong pack nucleus. This veteran team with seniors all projected to be in the top six. “We have had a good size group show up for summer workouts,” said Coach Troy Walcott. “Some of our top girls are running with the boys during workouts. I think that they'll be pleased at their improvement when competition starts. They have done some decent tempo and time trials to give them a sense as to where they're at.”
5 – Normal University Coach – Jill Burroughs 2024 Finish – 7th, 2A State Central State Eight Conference
Runners – Natalie Bierbaum SR, Lana Alcorn SR, Nora Bloebaum SO, Leya Alcorn SO, Tessa Ritter SR, Josie Wamsley JR, Jocelyn Lewis JR, Abigail Stenger SO.
Preview – It is hard to rate this team since we did not get any feedback from their coaches. The Pioneers could be among the top five or between 25 to 30. The Pioneers finished seventh in the 2A State and lose multi all-state runner Zoe Carter to graduation.
Natalie Bierbaum raced twice last September before running in the state meet where she finished seventh. Bierbaum only ran one race in track. It is hard to determine if she will race this fall. Lana Alcorn will lead a pack that could be within 30 seconds of each other. This could be a top five team if at full strength. Otherwise, they will push to finish in the 20’s.
6 – Rochester Coach – Bill Owens 2024 Finish – 5th, 2A State Central State Eight Conference
Runners – Ashley Zeibert SR, Natalie Nichols SR, Calista Gardner SO, Talia Daniels SO, Charlotte Long SO, Myra Gibson SR. Mara Kaeding JRSophia Dunn FR, Ava Van Dyke FR
Preview – This team again will be strong and looking for another top five state finish after finishing fifth last year. They will miss graduated Brooke Zeibert who finished 19th last year. The rest of their top seven are back. Ashley Zeibert and Natalie Nichols came in together placing 39th and 40th. Both could be in reach of a top 25 finish. Sophomores Calista Gardner and Talia Daniels ran well at the end of last season and will factor in the team’s top five. Charlotte Long and Myra Gibson are candidates to challenge for a top five spot.
7 – Mahomet-Seymour Coach – Jama Grotelueschen 2024 Finish – 20th, 2A State Apollo Conference
Runners – Emily Anand SR, Taylor Mills JR, Cecily Smith SO, Kennedy Ashby SO, Finley Smith SO, Jinan Abdo SR, Emily Ramirez JR, Paige Jansen FR,
Preview – The Bulldogs could be a team that finishes in the top 10 this season after their young team finished 20th a year ago. Five runners are back from the state team. Emily Anaud has emerged as an all-state runner for this year after finishing 45th in Peoria and then 11th last spring in the 3200 Meter Run with a 11:23.02 time. Cecily Smith ran under 19 minutes at state. Taylor Mills along with Kennedy Ashby and Finley Smith give the team a strong pack. “Emily Anand had a great track season in the 3200M and has continued to train at a high level this summer,” said their coach Jama Grotelueschen. “Taylor Mills appears to be healthy and extremely motivated. Anniston Huff works well with the group and is a great addition. Kennedy Ashby has really put in the work this summer. Cecily Smith looks ready to start where she left off last season with the added benefit of a year of experience.” Also keep an eye on freshman Paige Hansen who was all-state in the IESA 4A State Meet.
8 – Crystal Lake Central Coach – Brett Willhoit 2024 Finish – 12th, 2A State Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Skyler Ferrero JR, Jacqueline Orvis SR, Gwen Kidd SR, Yaretzi Leon SO, Sophia Parks JR, Lauren Peyer SR, Avery Watson SO, Alex Hannell FR, Lilly Shade FR, Brielle Zarate FR
Preview – It is no surprise that the Tigers are in this position. This program thrives on consistency in one of the toughest sectional area in Class 2A. Right now, they have made it to four straight state meets looking to make it five. That could happen with five state runners coming back. Skyler Ferrero and Jacqueline Orvis will be the leaders of this team running within seven seconds of each other. “We are transitioning out of being a team with a few very strong runners up front and solid runners throughout, to being a team that is going to pack it up quite a lot,” said coach Brett Willhoit. “So, it's hard to say who will be our top couple of runners. Jacqueline Orvis has done a great job of being one of our leaders this summer. Skyler Ferrero has been her usual busy self this summer, so we will see where her fitness is, but she always ramps up quickly.” Gwen Kidd, Yaretzi Leon, and Sophia Parks all look to be the runners to step onto the top five. The Tigers will still have a tight 60 second spread. The key will be moving that pack closer to the front.
9 – Crystal Lake South Coach – Ken Greenfield 2024 Finish – 8th, 2A State Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Caroline Lucas SO, Laynie Ripley SR, Kiera O’Leary SO. Cecelia Piemontese JR, Lily Brooks JR, Emma Reall SO, Kelsey Kos SR, Abby Magadan FR
Preview – The Gators are young with one senior among the top seven. South returns five runners from the state team that finished eighth. “There was a lot of excellent work done, but I expect that from these girls,” said coach Ken Greenfield. “We're a young team, so our learning curve is going to determine a lot of how our season goes.” Caroline Lucas was the team’s top runner at state after being the 2/3 runner during the season. She could impact how well this team runs this fall. “I love that she's excited about getting better and really loves the sport,” added Greenfield. “As she figures out how to be a lead runner, I think she'll improve by quite a bit.” Laynie Ripley ended up as the team’s fourth runner, yet she was just 23 seconds behind. Kiera O’Leary leads the pack that might be 60 seconds behind Ripley, and the pack will just be about 25 to 30 seconds.
10 – Grayslake Central Coach – James Centella 2024 Finish – 14th, 2A State North Lake County Conference
Runners – Violet Rowe SR, Jordan Suuter SR, Safiya Kane SO, Ava Pietruszynski SR, Ellie Chevrier SR, Addison Messinger SR, Emma Tonkery SR, Kennedy Pendleton FR, Violeta Grosvenor FR.
Preview – A team to keep an eye on despite the fact they finished 14th in the 2A State Meet. This is a veteran team with five out of their seven runners returning as seniors. A big loss for the Rams is that their top runner from last fall Ava Henne did not come out for the team. “I liked how our girls trained this summer,” said Coach Jimmy Centella “They were very consistent as a whole and were dedicated to running consistent mileage and workouts.”
They will look to qualify for state meet for the fifth straight year. Three of the last four years they left Peoria with a trophy. Jordan Sutter missed most of the second half of the season due to an injury. She did respond in track running a personal best in the 1600 and part of the team’s state qualifying 4x8. Violet Rowe Was just 11 seconds behind Henne at state. The welcome back of Sutter gives the team a strong top three. Safiya Kane and Ava Pietruszynski were part of the top five last year and return to the top five. Sutter’s return gives the team a projected 80 second top five spread. Two of their top runners could be all-state. The injuries slowed the team down last year. A healthy run into the state series will be a big plus for the Rams. Kennedy Pendleton is a freshman that should be watched as she adjusts to the longer distances.
11 – LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy Coach – Joe Wejman 2024 Finish – 25th, 2A State East Suburban Catholic Conference
Runners – Kathleen Hardy SO, Allie O’Halloran JR, Julia Parkes JR, Ashley Kenna JR, Claire Sigmund JR, Maggie Broderick SR, Lucy Jucovics SR. Elena Vlahos FR
Preview – The Roadrunners finished 25th in last year’s state meet. Nazareth Academy could finish much higher this fall. There are four runners back from that state team. Sophie Towne, who was the team’s third runner, will concentrate this fall and winter on basketball. Kathleen Hardy as a freshman earned all-state honors finishing 22nd. “Kathleen Hardy come out last season as a freshmen with limited racing experience and ended up as a state medalist,” said Coach Joe Wejman. “She really grew as a runner, and we expect her to elevate this in her sophomore season.” Allie O’Halloran will be a solid second runner with Julia Parkes, Ashley Kenna, and Claire Sigmund should also be a part of the team’s top five. Elena Vlahos was all-state in the IESA State Meet and will challenge for the top five. “Julia Parkes and Claire Sigmund have both grown as runners over the last two seasons, but they both had great track season with Parkes consistently hovering around 2:30 in the 800 and Sigmund was a state qualifier in the 400,” added Wejman.
12 – Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Coach – Josh Bluhm 2024 Finish – 7th, 1A Elmwood Sectional Central State Eight Conference
Runners – Paityn Brady SO, Oceana Huang SO, Kate Lambert JR, Macey Koehn JR, Payton Murray SO, Emma Johnson SR, Leva Cousineau SO, Karigan Books SR.
Preview – The move from Class 1A to 2A might be a great thing to happen for Sacred Heart-Griffin for the 2025 season. The Cyclones finished seventh in the Class 1A Elmwood Sectional missing making it to state by seven points. Paitlyn Brady qualified individually for the state finishing 12th in the 1A race. Four other runners in their sectional also are back with Brady. The sophomore could finish in the top 10 at the higher level. This team will be young with five of the top seven as sophomores. Oceana Huang will lead the pack behind Brady.
13 – Lake Forest Coach – Steve Clegg 2024 Finish – 18th, 2A State North Suburban Conference
Runners – Pilar Rosales SR, Portia LeGrand SO, Maddy Stell JR, Natalie Devora SO, Emma LeGrand JR, Kate McCann SR, Grace Walsh JR.
Preview – The Scouts have qualified for the state meet the last three years. Lake Forest returns three from last year’s 18th place team finisher. Pilar Rosales finished 38th in last year’s meet with hopes of finishing higher in her senior season. Maddy Stell and Portia LeGrand were the team’s sixth and seventh runners and are ready to step into the top five. Natalie Devora and Emma LeGrand are within 30 seconds of Stell and LeGrand giving the Scouts a strong top five.
14 – Morton Coach – Joe Zeller 2024 Finish – 10th, 2A State Mid Illini Conference
Runners – Madison Greiner SO, Brielle Hopkins SR, Annaliese Sanders JR, Nyameye Maison SR, Jessica Knapp JR, Haley Kaluza JR, Ava Burgess SR, Eden Sticking SR, Audrey Bonham SO.
Preview – The Potters will look to rebuild with four runners back from last year’s 10th place finish. Morton has qualified in the last six state meet looking for their seventh this fall. Madison Greiner stepped up at the end of the year to be the top runner for Morton finishing 43rd. Brielle Hopkins was 43 seconds back and should be the team’s second runner. Annaliese Sanders, Nyameye Maison, and Jessica Knapp look to fill the next three spots though they will close the 60 second gap between Hopkins and Sanders.
15 – West Chicago Wheaton Academy Coach – Daniel Ball 2024 Finish – 16th, 2A State Chicagoland Christian Conference
Runners – Addie Painter JR, Sydnie Becker SO, Charlotte Brown SO, Adeline Farrell SO, Annie Roth SR, Kelsey Brust SO, Shaylee Powell SR, Halle VanZee JR.
Preview – Wheaton Academy is a good bet to make it back to the state meet returning their top three and four overall from the state meet where they finished 15th overall. Addie Painter again should be the top runner. She finished 48th at state in 2024. She will have a good pack behind her with Sydnie Becker and Charlotte Brown within 10 seconds of each other and within 30 seconds of Painter. Adeline Farrell will lead the next pack but will need to be within 45 seconds of Brown. Annie Roth and Kelsey Brust will challenge for the fifth scoring spot.
16 – Mascoutah Coach – Darren Latham 2024 Finish – 28th, 2A State Mississippi Valley Conference
Runners – Ryleigh Piller JR, Milla Cryder SO, Chloe Millett JR, Abby Detering SO, Abcde Climaco SO, Bria Akins JR, Layla Bradshaw SR, Lexi Pohlsander SR.
Preview – Mascoutah is ready to take the next step up after finishing 28th at the state meet. Six of their top seven runners are back from that team. This team will need a 60 second spread on their top five, which is possible. The key will be moving that pack up. Their top runner Millia Cryder at state ran 19:32 with teammate Ryleigh Piller running right with her. Abby Detering, Abcde Climaco, Bria Akins, and Chloe Millett also ran within 28 seconds of each other with none of them under 20 minutes. The team has improved over the past year. A top 20 finish is possible with this group.
17 – Lemont Coach – Tim Plotke 2024 Finish – 19th, 2A State South Suburban Blue Conference
Runners – Hannah Farley SO, Cassie Cunningham SR, Amelia Sinnett SO, Maggie Davey SR, Maya Fedko SR, Lizzy Rupsis SO, Nell Fedko JR
Preview – A negative that turned into a positive happened at the beginning of the season. Their top runner who graduated Niki Tselios went down with an injury at the end Of August and did not return until the state series. Hannah Farley stepped up to become the team’s top runner. The sophomore ran 17:26 to finish 13th and emerged as one of the top runners in Class 2A this fall. Farley had a good track season helping Lemont to get to Charleston in the 4x8 and dropped her time down to 5:17.71 in the 1600 Meter Run. Five other runners are back from the state team that finished 19th at Detweiller Park. “7 girls went to Grand Valley State XC Camp and came back to summer training reinvigorated with some great individual and team goals,” said Coach Tim Plotke. “We have had a great summer, and I am excited to see what this season brings.” Cassie Cunningham, and Maya Fedko, along with Farley, has strong track seasons that should take them up to another level. The gap behind Farley before Cunningham is something that should not be looked at. Keeping their second through fifth runners under 60 seconds will be something to watch. It is projected to be 80 seconds to start the season. “Their confidence grew by leaps and bounds which has carried over into our summer training and to the rest of the team,” added Plotke.
18 – Peoria Notre Dame Coach – Dan Gray 2024 Finish – 6th, 1A State Big 12 Conference
Runners – Maya Zopel SR, Shannon Zopel JR, Norah Gould JR, Audrey Shane SO, Mackenzie James SO, Elizabeth Leustek JR, Lucy Cusack JR, Lillian Chaddock FR, Sloan Cranford FR
Preview - The Irish make the move from Class 1A to Class 2A for the 2025 season. Peoria Notre Dame returns three runners from the 6th place Class 1A State Meet. This could be a rebuilding year for this team in an entirely new environment. The one thing that the Irish will have is tight pack running. Maya and Shannon Zopel ran within eight seconds of each other at state and should be the top runners in this top seven. Norah Gould was in the sixth/seven position and should step into the top five. Lillian Chadwick was all-state in the IESA State Meet finishing fifth in the 800 and fourth in the 1600. Chadwick also plays soccer and will be splitting her time between both sports. Their Coach Dan Gray calls her a high motor competitor and will have a big impact on their top seven. “This is a transition year personal wise for the varsity runners,” said Gray. “We need to see who steps up to the challenge. We are looking to establish a new identity for this group with new leaders. Our goal every year is to make it to state.”
19 – Mt. Zion Coach – Kelly Fox 2024 Finish – 9th, 2A ORC Sec Apollo Conference
Runners – Avery Sommer SR, Elena Coon SO, Sandra Munoz SO, Adalyn Patterson SO, Lola Maldonado JR, Makenna Scribner JR, Ellie Jones FR, Ella Morgan FR, Georgia Sullivan FR
Preview – Mt. Zion missed making it to state last year finishing ninth at the Richland County Sectional. This team is young led by Avery Sommer who finished 26th just missing all-state. She is ready to do big things this season after running a 5:05 last spring. The team had four freshman in their top five last year and this season looks like a similar scenario as Coach Kelly Fox has another strong frosh group in. “Avery brought all the new freshmen in and made things FUN,” Fox said. “It was a HOT summer and running isn't easy. I love how these girls encourage and lift each other. We're going to compete but we're also going to enjoy the process along the way.”
20 – Dunlap Coach – Chris Friedman 2024 Finish – 23rd, 2A State Mid Illini Conference
Runners – Aubrey Ott SO, Josie Kroll JR, Brooklyn Virtue SO, Ellie Spanhook JR, Claire Sack SR, Hannah Parker JR, Esme Gibbons SO,
Preview – It could be an interesting year for Dunlap as they lost their top two runners from state to graduation. The Eagles return four runners from their team that finished 23rd. The three runners back ran within 30 seconds in the final four races giving this team promise led by Aubrey Ott, Brooklyn Virtue, and Ellie Spanhook. The team should have a tight pack projected to be between 50 to 55 seconds to start this season. “Our program is going through something of a transition,” said Coach Chris Friedman. “We have been blessed with depth and a consistent flow of runners from the middle school level. We seem to be going through a dip in both. I do think, while we may lack some of the depth we've had in the past, we are a state qualifying team.”
21 – Arlington Heights St. Viator Coach – Bill Stanczak 2024 Finish – 21st, 2A State East Suburban Catholic Conference
Runners – Emily Walberg SR, Allie Long SR, Jada Baer SR, Camila Fuentes JR, Izabella Mazurkiewicz SO, Grace Vanfossom SR, Isabella Renguso JR (transfer from Wauconda). Breanna Klokkenga FR, Marin Janiak FR
Preview – One of the big surprise teams last year in Class 2A. The Lions went from eight place in their regional race in 2023 to making it to the state meet last fall. Five runners are back from their state team. They did lose Maddie Long who transferred to Prospect. She was the team’s 5/6 runner at the end of the year. Emily Walberg again will be the team’s top runner after finishing 50th. The team had over a two-minute spread on their top five. The addition of Isabella Renguso who was the top runner from Wauconda will give this team strength in their top five. “We have a smaller team than many, but the captains have great attitudes and keep the girls engaged and having fun,” said Coach Bill Stanczak. “These seniors have been a very close-knit group these past four years and I hope their work ethic and success continues to rub off on the others.”
22 – Lombard Montini Coach – Alex Zasso 2024 Finish – 22nd, 1A State Girls Catholic Athletic Conference
Runners – Sydney Gertsen SR, Ashlynn Lindt SR, Natalia Pesola FR, Rose Callaghan JR, Kayli Gergen SO, Gia Csoke SO, Amelia Sherman SO, Maryfaith Considine JR, Katherine Paradis FR, Fiona Felten FR.
Preview – Montini moves from Class 1A to Class 2A and could be more improved than the team that finished 22nd a year ago. The success of this team will come from the two all-state returning runners Sydney Gertsen and Ashlynn Lindt. “Sydney and Ashlynn have had the best summer of training of their high school careers,” said their Coach Alex Zasso. “Both have stayed healthy while reaching new highs in weekly mileage and improving on workouts from last summer. They are students of the sport and do a great job of understanding and executing the purpose of each day. Sydney's confidence and goals are high after an excellent track season (10:40/5:01).” Gertsen finished sixth at state last year and will contend for the individual title in November. Lindt could be among the top 10 finishers after placing 18th last year. Natalia Pesola starts her freshman season with the possibility of being the third runner. “Natalia placed 4th at the IESA 1A State Cross Country Meet both of the past 2 years and is expected to be our third runner,” added Zasso.
23 – Bloomington Coach – Veronica Grundman 2024 Finish – 15th, 3A Norm Comm Sec Big 12 Conference
Runners – Josie Skeate JR, Alex Noonan SR, Kylie Huffaker JR, Mae Jones SR, Abby Noonan SR, Penelope Johnson SO, Morgan Hart JR, Javaya Pace JR, Lainy Goeke SO.
Preview – The move down to Class 2A could help the Purple Raiders improve on their 15th place finish at the Normal Sectional. Six runners coming back from that sectional will be a big help. Josie Skeate and Alex Noonan are interchangeable in the front and will again lead this team. Kylie Huffaker gives the team stability as the team’s third runner. The team’s top five spread inn their sectional race was over two minutes. That spread should be close to 90 seconds by the beginning of October. The move down to Class 2A might get them to state.
24 – Rockford Boylan Coach – Nathan Kohnle 2024 Finish – 4th, 2A State Northern Illinois Ten Conference
Runners – Nora Wedwick SO, Gabrielle Kohnle JR, Elle Sosnowski SO, Vanessa Tekampe JR, Evelyn Rozanski SR, Fiona Brown JR.
Preview – Boylan went from 24th in 2023 at state to a fantastic fourth place finish last year missing a trophy by 10 points. Five runners are back from the state team but lost their top and fourth runners. Their depth is not like last year. Nora Wedwick enters her sophomore year as the team’s #1 runner after 29th last year. Gabrielle Kohnle and Elle Sosnowski are the other two runners back from the top five. There might be over a two-minute gap after the top three. Work will need to be done to reduce that spread for the Titans to make it to state for the third straight year.
25 – Olney Richland County Coach – Amy Julian 2024 Finish – 8th, 2A ORC Sec Little Illini Conference
Top Runners – Josie Ginder SR, Isabella Stevens SO, Lily Stevens JR, Karlee Piercefield SR, Briley Kocher SR, Mallory Kocher SO, Addison McLaughlin SO.
Preview – Richland County missed a trip to the state meet on their home course as they finished eighth on their home course. They will miss their top runner Mackenzi Thomas after she graduated. The rest of their top seven are back. Jesse Ginder should be the team’s top runner. She is the only runner back that went under 20 minutes for three miles last year. Lily Stevens and Isabella Stevens give the Tigers a strong 2/3 pack. Richland County will start this year with a projected 75 second top five spread. The Key is having three runners under 20 minutes while moving Ginder and the two Stevens sisters under 19 minutes.
26 – Chicago Latin Coach – Dan Daly 2024 Finish – 5th,1A State Independent School League
Runners – Francesca Mora SO, Vivian Sidrys SO, Ruby Larsen SR, Julia Steffen SR, Vivian Lee-Yee SR, Chloe Ramette JR, Claire Horwitz SO
Preview – Latin’s Girls team has qualified for the state meet 11 out of the past 12 meets. The Romans came on strong at the end of the year when they got to full strength to get fifth in Class 1A. Now the Romans are back in Class 2A without two of their top three runners, Mia Kotler and Ellie Anderson. The other five are back. Francesca Mora had a fantastic freshman season in the fall and spring; she finished 17th at state last fall. A top 10 finish could be in her reach. Ruby Larsen and Vivian Sidrys will be solid top three runners. “The 4-7 spots. are open and will be filled by those who are motivated, did the work over the summer and want to be a part of a strong history of excellence,” said their coach Dan Daly.
27 – Champaign Centennial Coach – Laura Koterba-Buss 2024 Finish – 29th, 2A State Big 12 Conference
Runners – Farah Scott JR, Brenna Hooper JR, Molly Pate SR, Lauren Kleber JR, Jocelynn Russell SO, Avery Benson JR, Josie Potter SR.
Preview – Centennial made it to the state for the second year in a row as they finished 29th. The last year that the Chargers made it to state was in 2000. Five runners are returning from last year’s team. They will have a solid top three group, but a big gap after that could hurt Centennial’s chances to finish in the top 20. Farah Scott emerged as the team’s runner last season. The junior again should be leading this team. Breanna Hooper and Molly Pate staying within a minute of Scott. Other returners Lauren Kleber and Avery Benson were another 90-110 seconds behind Pate at state. The margin needs to narrow for at least a chance to make it to state.
28 – Deerfield Coach – Jeff Beaumont 2024 Finish – 8th, 3A Glnbrk So Reg Central Suburban League
Runners – Audrey Dickerson JR, Azalea Modes JR, Stella Martin JR, Olivia Martin JR, Siona Rajshekhar SR, Madeline Geres JR, Riley Shafer JR.
Preview – The Warriors did not make it out of their 3A regional last year placing eighth. Deerfield just returns four runners from that regional race, Their depth on the roster should get this team to a sectional on the first weekend in November. Azalea Modes and Audrey Dickerson advanced into sectionals last year and again will lead this team. Olivia Brown and Stella Martin also ran in regionals and will give the Warriors strength in their top five. “The training this summer has been what we typically do, and it has clicked with our returning varsity runners<” said Coach Jeff Beaumont. “Another year stronger and wiser and we are set up for an exciting season. We don't have as much depth as most years, so it's going to be a lot of finger-crossing that we stay physically and mentally healthy all year. I was incredibly happy with how they looked at our Midnight Mile - the first official practice for us is a timed mile on the track. Those times indicate we're starting the year in a better place than a year ago.”
29 – Carterville Coach – Nancy Adams 2024 Finish – 15th, 1A State Southern Illinois River-To-River Conference
Runners – Lyla Seaman JR, Laney Sambursky SO, Dani Williamson SR, Liesel Balmforth JR, Landrey Crain JR, Alissa Ruiz SO, Isabella Dion SO
Preview – Four runners are back from last year’s team that finished 15th at state. They will miss all-state runner Molly Robertson who graduated. Lyla Seaman should be the top runner for Carterville. She ran 18:46 at state almost a minute behind Robertson. Laney Sambursky and Dani Williamson ran within 40 seconds of Seaman giving this team a solid top three.
30 – Waterloo Coach – Larry Huffmann 2024 Finish – 13th, 2A State Mississippi Valley Conference
Runners – Emily Vogt JR, Calla Espenschied SR, Charley Funk SO, Reese Davis-Grandcolas SO, Noark Kettler SR, Macy Jones SR, Jordan Keller SO.
Preview – The Bulldogs will look to rebuild losing their top three runners to graduation after finishing 13th at state. Emily Vogt steps up as one of the runners you could see for Waterloo in the front. Calia Espenscheid and Charley Funk could be closer than we think with Vogt. Reese Davis-Grandcolas we up front. Their top five spread is projected to be near 100 seconds to start the season. That gap should close as the season progresses.
Other Class 2A Schools to watch this fall; schools listed in Alphabetical order
Cary-Grove Coach – Mark Anderson 2024 Finish – 8th, 3A Warren Reg Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Olivia Parker SR, Isabella Limburg SO, Avery Boone SR, Julia Valaitis SR, Brook Gerstung JR, Molly Starr SR, Sofia Seaburg JR, Becca DeKett SR
Preview – Cary-Grove did not get out of the 3A Warren Regional last season finishing eighth overall. The Trojans move down to Class 2A for at least this year and could move close to making it to the state meet. Six runners are back from last year’s team. Senior Olivia Parker again will be the runner up front. She was one of two athletes to advance to the Hoffman Estates Sectional where she ran 18:58 to finish 62nd. Chances she will make it to state meet are good. She was all-state in track finishing seventh in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Isabella Limburg had a breakout freshman season as she advanced to sectionals but no further finishing 27 seconds behind Parker. Julia Valaitis, Brook Gerstung, and Avery Boone at some point last year ran under 21 minutes. The Trojans are on the verge of finishing in the top 10 in whatever sectional in which they are placed. The key is keeping their five-runner spread off Parker at or under 95 seconds. Cary-Grove last made it to the state meet in 2022. They might be making the trip to Peoria as a team this November.
Chicago Northside Coach – Lee Greenberg 2024 Finish – 9th, 2A Kaneland Sec Chicago Public League
Runners – Sarah Chae SO, Charlotte Wik-Ford SR, Isha Shankar SR, Ariana Mehra SO, Giana Havrilla JR, Marian Johnson SO, Regan Gould JR
Preview – The Mustangs will look different in 2025 with five runners back from their sectional team. Where they will look different is the loss of all-state runner Lulu Ton-That who has graduated. This will be a team this fall that will need to rely on tight pack running to make it to Peoria since they will not have a single digit runner in the front. Sarah Chae is the runner that should step to the front. She was the second runner behind Ton-That as a freshman and only runner that dipped under 20 minutes that coming at the Lakes Regional. The potential of a tight pack is there with Isha Shankar, Charlotte Wik-Ford, Ariana Mehra, and Giana Havrilla running within 42 seconds of each other. The gap between Chae and the pack was 45 seconds. Chae will be a runner in the 18-minute range this fall. Hopefully, the pack will follow her.
Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge Coach – Kelly MacDonald 2024 Finish – 13th, 2A Kaneland Sec Fox Valley Conference
Runners – Emaline Foster SO, Anneke Dam SO, Genevieve Torgerson JR, Flynn Wolff SR, Savannah Monahan SR, Maia Lancaster FR, Addison Sawer FR, Anna Baade FR, Emily Laporte FR, Caitlyn Macauley FR.
Preview – This will be a different team than we saw last year when the Wolves finished 13th in the Kaneland Sectional. Four runners from that team are back. Their third runner Lila Stewart decided not to come out for the team this fall. Prairie Ridge will have Emaline Foster as their top runner. The sophomore was all-state last track season running 10:42.16 to finish fifth at state. She was also all-state in the 1600 Meter Run. “Emaline was injured last XC season,” said her coach Kelly MacDonald. “She worked hard to recover and took it easy with mileage. She had a great Track season, and we are excited to see where her summer running training will take her this cross-country season.” Foster did run 17:46 at Detweiller Park before her injury and the season started. She will be one of the top runners in Class 2A. Anneke Dam was the top runner last year. She will be the nucleus of this young developing pack along with Flynn Wolff. The Wolves will have a good freshman group entering the program led by Maia Lancaster and Addison Sawyer should contribute immediately. “All of my freshman runners have come in eager and have worked up to good mileage. Their effort during quality workouts has been great,” said MacDonald. “Our team is the smallest it has been in many, many years, but I have been happy with the number of girls who have been consistently at summer running. I have seen a ton of growth, and I am curious to see how well the incoming Freshman will race. I have a great feeling that this group of girls will really bond and will be close by the end of the year.”
Dixon Coach – Simon Thorpe 2024 Finish – 14th, 2A Kaneland Sec Big Northern Conference
Runners – Kamryn Rogers SR, Daniela Lovett SR, Kyara Chavez JR, Leah Ferrantino SO, Ava Hagler FR, Ellie Kemp SO, Sophia Wendt JR, Cassie Swarbrick SO.
Preview – A team that could be knocking on the door of going back to the state meet. The Duchesses return all seven runners from the 14t place sectional team. Kamryn Rogers again should be the team’s top runner after qualifying individually for the state meet finishing 64th. There is a veteran group behind her with Daniela Lovett and Kyara Chavez running with 10 seconds of each other but more than a minute behind Rogers. Their top five spread should narrow throughout this position getting to that state qualifying area come October.

Runners – Brooklyn Smith JR, Lucille Wachtel JR, Evelyn DeBaene SO, Ayla Schultz, JR, Hannah Stone SR, Alivia Brown SO, Jacey Gehl SO, Liberty Brumbaugh SR.

Five of the top six runners from that state race are back led by Brooklyn Smith. The junior ran a good race at Detweiller finishing 47th. A top 25 finish is within her reach. The Western Big Six champs will work on their pack behind Smith led by Lucille Wachtel. Their spread off Smith is over two minutes. A top five spread between 95 to 100 seconds could get this team back to the state meet.
Highland Coach – Megan McKee 2024 Finish – 11th, 2A ORC Sec Mississippi Valley Conference
Runners – Josie Kircher SO, Brooklyn Giffhorn SO, Vician Marron SR, Rowan Passmore JR, Layne Powers SR, Lyla Rembisz JR.

They will miss their top runner Payton Frey who graduated. Sophomores Josie Kircher and Brooklyn Giffhorn will challenge for the top spot. Watch for freshmen to step into any of the top seven. Highland is projected be near 50 seconds. A key is moving this pack closer to the front.
Joliet Catholic Academy Coach – Mark Clarke 2024 Finish – 26th, 2A State East Suburban Catholic Conference
Runners – Haylie Bernhard JR, Mary Kate Moran JR, Ella Heinen SR, Kate Munday SO, Callan Kinsella SO, Bella Pollack JR, Lindsay Alcantar SR.
Preview – Chances are good that the Hilltoppers will make it back to the state meet after finishing sixth at the Metamora Sectional and then 26th at the state meet. They do lose their top runner Carolina Gallegos with juniors Haylie Bernhard and Mary Kate Moran ready to step into the top spot. Six runners are back from the state meet. Pack running will be something to watch from this team. Their top four back should all be within 60 seconds of each other with their top five spread near 90 seconds.
Vernon Hills Coach – Christopher Wolf 2024 Finish – 7th, 3A Warren Reg Central Suburban League
Runners – Estella Ollinger JR, Naina Mathur JR, Amelia Pan JR, Campbell Fenton SO, Jillian Leuck SO, Emma Wright JR, Gianna Gossett JR, Hannah Greenfield FR.
Preview – The Cougars move down to 2A after missing advancing out of the 3A Warren Regional by nine points. It could be a rebuilding year with four runners back from that race. Now in Class 2A, this team could punch their ticket to Detweiller Park in November. Estella Ollinger advanced to sectionals and will be the team’s top runner along with fellow junior Naina Mathur who was in the top five. “Returning juniors Ami Pan, Naina Mather, and Emma Wright have shown consistent dedication and are ready to help the team improve on last year’s performances,” said their coach, Chris Wolf. “Their reliability and growth over the summer have not gone unnoticed, and they will be key pieces in our team’s success this fall. Christopher Wolf. “This year’s varsity squad will be junior-heavy, composed of athletes who have been contributing at the varsity level since their freshman year. Among them is Ella Ollinger, a returning front runner who’s coming off an impressive track season and already looks stronger this summer than last. Her continued growth will be a key part of our team’s success.” Freshman Hannah Greenfield according to Wolf could be an immediate contributor and maybe among their top five. This is a sneaky good team that might be making state noise at the end of October. “Though we’ve lost our #2, #3, and #5 runners to graduation, this group is more than ready to meet the challenge,” added Wolf. “With experienced returners, emerging new talent, and a unified team mindset, we’re excited to see how far this team can go in the 2025 season.”
Wauconda Coach – Kristin Lilla 2024 Finish – 7th, 2A Lakes Reg Northern Lake Country Conference
Runners – Teagan Kienzle SO, Kylah Blohm JR, Lillian Schubert JR, Cedella Pollin JR, Riley Blue SO, Kimberly Zavaleta JR, Emilia Jozwiak SR
Preview – The Bulldogs missed making it out of the Lakes regional by five points. It might be tough for Wauconda to make it to the sectional meet this year after losing Isabella Renguso who transferred to St. Viator. 4 runners return from their regional race. Teagan Kienzle ran in the sectional race and again will be the team’s top runners. The Bulldogs has a top five spread near two minutes.
Woodstock Coach – Jay Fuller 2024 – Finish – 11th, 2A Kaneland Sec Kishwaukee River Conference
Runners – Sophie Sarabia SR, Susana Marti SO, Ella Smart SO, Yaxim Juarez JR, Martha Baker JR, Liana Balderas JR, Valeria Greoles Tolosa SO, Hazel Rosemann FR, Victoria Sarabia FR
Preview – The Streaks will look to improve on last year’s 11th place finish at the Kaneland Sectional. Five runners are back from that team led by Sophia Sarabia and Susan Marti. The top five should be strengthened by the addition of freshmen Hazel Rosemann and Victoria Sarabia. “We have 7 new freshmen girls which is big number for us,” said Coach Jay Fuller. “It will be fun to see them develop their running/racing this season.” More news |
