Illinois Track & Field Athletes of the Year – 2A Boys Field EventsPublished by
By Michael Newman, ILXCTF.com Editor
Two athletes stood out in the Class 2A field events this season. Myles Aldridge of Normal University was one of the reasons that his school tied for the 2A state championship. The senior jumped a personal best 23-4.5 to win the 2A state championship in the Long Jump. Aldridge was undefeated outdoors in the Triple with his 47-8.5 leap to win state his best. Carbondale’s Sam Sikon concluded his decorated high school career in the throwing ring breaking his own 2A state meet record throwing 63-6 to win his third straight state championship. He went undefeated this season including his season’s best of 65-0.25 to win at Belleville West finishing ahead of Lockport Township’s John Meyer and Edwardsville’s AJ Epenesa. Sikon finished second in the Discus at state throwing a seasonal best of 172-9. Aldridge did get the two wins at state in the horizontal jumps but the quality of wins by Sikon in the Shot Put had more influence in the decision. Sikon being ranked in the top 20 nationally along with the 2A meet record at state sealed the deal. Winning three state championships in a row is a tough thing to do especially in this state. Congratulations to Sam Sikon of Carbondale High School as the 2017 ILXCTF.com 2A Boys Field Events Athlete of the Year. More news |
