2020 ILXCTF.com Illinois Track & Field Previews - 1A Boys Distance Events

The dynamics in these three events are different than what we saw in last fall’s state cross country meet. 1A State Cross Country Champion Drew Rogers of Herscher will compete in Class 2A this spring along again with Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda. Two of the top three teams in that race Monticello and Stanford Olympia also compete in the middle classification.
The three distance events in this classification will be fun to watch. The 3200 Meter Relay, that will begin the state finals on that Saturday.
Will the third sophomore lead them all in the 3200 Meter Run?
Drew Rogers and Ryder James are two of the three sophomores that finished in the top five in the 1A State Cross Country Meet. Second-place finisher Dawson Smith of Rock Falls and will also move up a class. That leaves the third-place finisher Miles Sheppard of Hamilton/Warsaw the runner to watch in the longest state race on the track. The sophomore has showed he has improved ever since he ran 9:40.90 to finish third in last year’s finals. The 14:53 that he ran at Detweiller Park last November gives us an idea what he could run this season. A time under 9:25 is possible for him.
Negus Bogard of Robinson was slowed down by an injury towards the end of last fall. He finished 42nd at Detweiller Park in November. Bogard should be one of the elite runners in this classification his senior season. Bogard was all-state in both the 1600 Meter Run and the 3200 Meter Run. He could challenge Sheppard in this event.
Two other all-state runners are back with Ty Barbre of Carmi-White County and Cort Ross of Casey-Westfield. Tristan Olpin of Keith County Day had a good cross country season and could be a threat in this event. Layton Hall of Arthur-Lovington did not have a great finish to his cross-country season finishing 37th. Hall did finish seventh running 9:47.03. I would watch for him.
A Trio of Milers
Three runners stand out in the 1600 Meter Run. They happen two be the top three returners in this event. Noah McIntyre of Athens could have the drive to win a state title to end his high school career. McIntyre used a strong kick to win at the Illinois Top Times Championships last March. Christopher Collet had the stronger kick outdoors in Charleston with McIntyre settling for second. McIntyre finished fourth in the fall. The hunger for a win could push him under 4:20 this season.
Negus Bogard has the fastest time (4:23.11) of all the returning runners and more than two seconds ahead of McIntyre. Gabe Martinez of Bismarck-Henning surprised some last spring as he finished fourth in the finals. He finished 12th last November. It would be no surprise if he leaves Charleston with the state title.
The 800 and the relays
Everyone knew last spring that Morrison would be the team to beat in the 3200 Meter Relay since they returned their entire quartet of the 2018 state team. Morrison obliged by winning the event for the second straight time. Again entering this season, they return all of their quartet. Again, they will be the favorites when they get to Charleston in May.
The depth in the distances from Morrison will show up in this two lap event. Hunter Newman was the surprise in last year’s 800 finals. No one expected a freshman to be in the front. Newman proved them wrong by finishing second. His teammate Koby Brackemeyer finished fifth in that race and will be close to the front.
Charles Cleary of Beacon Academy has a time that is more than a second behind the time that Newman ran. It will not surprise me if that senior comes home with the top prize.
