Illinois HS Track & Field Conference Highlights - May 12, 2019

This week was for bragging rights for Boys teams as they get ready to compete for state meet spots beginning on Wednesday.

Here is a look at some highlights from some of the meets from the past week.

 

Southwest Suburban Boys Blue Division @ Bolingbrook

In a close three team battle, Homewood-Flossmoor scored 133.5 points to hold off Lockport (128 points) and Lincoln-Way East (125 points) for the Blue Divisional championship. The conditions were less then optimal but there were some great performances.

Homewood-Flossmoor was timed at 41.91 in winning the 400 Meter Relay ahead of Lincoln-Way East (43.13). The Vikings also won the 800 Meter Relay (1:31.14) and the 1600 Meter Relay (3:27.59). Jalen Hunter of Homewood-Flossmoor jumped 21-11 to win the Long Jump ahead of Lincoln-Way East’s Fard Farrakhan (21-7.75). HF’s Quinton Stringfellow had a 47-3.50 jump to win the Triple Jump ahead of Farrakhan’s 45-7 effort. Farrakhan did clear a personal best 6-6 to win the High Jump.

Homewood-Flossmoor swept the 100 Meter Dash as Jesuseun Adeyiga ran 11.14 to edge teammate Joshua Bridges (11.16) for the win. Lockport’s Michael Walkosz ran a personal best 49.16 (IL #5) to win the 400 Meter Dash. Marshall Ellis of Homewood-Flossmoor won a close 200 Meter Dash final as he ran 22.21 just ahead of Lockport’s Kyle Langellier (22.22) and Walkosz (22.51).

 

Southland Athletic Conference Boys @ Bloom Township

Crete-Monee tuned up for next week’s sectional meet on this track with some great performances led by the state’s fastest time in the 400 Meter Relay. The Warriors ran 41.66 for the win ahead of Bloom Township and their 41.92 (IL #3) time. Bloom Township followed that up by running the fastest time in the state in the 800 Meter Relay (1:27.52) to finish ahead of Crete-Monee by almost three seconds.

Bloom Township’s Kaden Turner achieved a personal best of 23-5.50 (IL #4) to win the Long Jump ahead of Crete-Monee’s Jamal Safo (23-1.50). Safo did get a win in the 100 Meter Dash (10.88) just ahead of Bloom Township’s Kamrin Williams (10.90).

Victor Cameron of Crete-Monee picked up wins in the 110 High Hurdles (14.45) and the 300 Intermediate Hurdles (41.93). Bloom Township’s Ramon Lacey was a double winner running 2:01.96 to win the 800 Meter Run and running 4:43.01 to win the 1600 Meter Run.

Tyler Sudduth of Rich South was in control of the weight events as he had a 153-2 throw to win the Discus. Sudduth also achieved a personal best of 57-7 (IL #8) to win the Shot Put.

 

WSC-Silver Boys @ York

Meet Video

Oak Park-River Forest was not in a good mood in March after they finished second behind York in the conference’s indoor championships. They changed that frown into a smile with a dominating performance in winning the team title with 155 points. Glenbard West (123.5 points), York (90 points), and Lyons Township (83 points) followed.

Oak Park-River Forest displayed that they could be a team that could contend for a trophy in Charleston in two weeks. Their quartet in the 400 Meter Relay ran 41.96 (IL #4) for the win by more than a second ahead of Glenbard West (43.31). The Huskies took control in the final leg in the 800 Meter Relay to run 1:30.35 for the win ahead of York (1:31.40).

JT Lowder of Oak Park-River Forest picked up wins in both hurdle races. Lowder was by himself by the third hurdle as he ran 14.35 for the in into a slight headwind in the 110 High Hurdles. His teammate Koren Leonard was in his first race back in this event since a hamstring injury sidelined him in February. Leonard won his section (15.18) finishing second overall. Lowder came back to run 38.59 (IL #4) to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles.

Tyquan Cox of Glenbard West ran 11.19 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Oak Park’s Tyrone Clarke (11.29) and Amir Blanchard (11.48). Blanchard returned the favor in the 200 Meter Dash running 22.17 and edging Cox (22.21) and Clarke (22.50). Clarke was in control of the 400 Meter Dash running 50.13 for the win ahead of Proviso West’s Katrell Askins (50.77).

Cox also won the Long Jump with a 22-4.50 effort. Kweshi Yeboah of Oak Park jumped a personal best 45-1 to win the Triple Jump. Mykolas Saloninas led an Oak Park 1-2 sweep in the Shot Put. The senior had a 57-4.50 put (IL #9) to win ahead of teammate Keon Gilbert (55-2.50). Gilbert threw 144-9 to win the Discus. York’s Brendan Hill and Lyons Township’s Christian Gatsos both cleared 13-2 in the Pole Vault. Hill won the event on fewer misses. Glenbard West’s Corey Williams and Lyons Township’s Robbie Cicciarelli both cleared 6-3 with Williams winning on fewer misses in the High Jump.

Glenbard West’s Rory Cavan had the only other double win in this meet. The all-state runner pulled away from the field in the final kilometer of the 3200 Meter Run. Cavan ran 9:18.32 for the win ahead of Downers Grove North’s Trevor Murphy (9:24.06) and Ethan Kern of York (9:25.20). Cavan took the lead just before the bell lap of the 1600 Meter Run. His 59.2 second final lap gave him the win in the 1600 Meter Run (4:19.67) ahead of Downers Grove North’s Jack Roberts (4:21.92) and Matt Moravec (4:24.55).

Will O’Brien of Glenbard West had a 15-meter lead heading into the homestretch of the 800 Meter Run. York’s Michael Moriarty made a charge at O’Brien and the two runners leaned at the finish. O’Brien got the win (1:56.28, IL #8) just ahead of Moriarty (1:56.32, IL #9). Hinsdale Central pulled away in the final half of the 3200 Meter Relay to run 8:03.10 (IL #8) to win the title ahead of Lyons Township (8:06.29). Lyons Township was in control in winning the 1600 Meter Relay (3:26.44) finishing ahead of York (3:29.07) and Oak Park-River Forest (3:29.96).

 

Southwest Conference Boys @ Collinsville

East St. Louis-Senior pulled away in the final four events to capture the conference title with 145.5 points. Edwardsville (137.5 points) and O’Fallon (130.5 points) finished second and third.

Edwardsville’s Kenyon Johnson had the performances of this meet with personal bests in both the Long and Triple Jump. Johnson jumped 23-8 (IL #3) to win the Long Jump by more than a foot. The junior came back to jump 45-8.50 (IL #10) to win the Triple Jump just ahead of East St. Louis’ Darrione Williams (45-8).

Belleville West and East St. Louis were separated by less than a tenth of a second in the 400 Meter Relay. Belleville West picked up the win (42.11, IL #5) just ahead of the Flyers (42.15, IL #7). East St. Louis came back to run 1:28.34 (IL #2) to win the 800 Meter Relay ahead of Belleville West (1:29.13, IL #7). East St. Louis won their third relay of the meet in the 1600 Meter Relay (3:23.24) with Alton (3:24.22, IL #8).

Collinsville’s Jermarrion Stewart tuned up for the state series with a pair of wins in the sprints. Stewart ran 10.66 (IL #5) to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Alton’s Deonte Mcgoy (10.78). Stewart also won the 200 Meter Dash (21.58) ahead of Marcus Lampley of East St. Louis (22.01) and McGoy (22.16).

Willie Johnson of East St. Louis ran 48.02 to win the 400 Meter Dash by more than two seconds ahead of Edwardsville’s Brandon Battle (50.04). Teammates Andrew Johnson and Jamarriante Burgess of East St. Louis were only separated by a hundredth of a second in the 110 High Hurdles with Johnson getting the win (14.93). Johnson finished second in the 300 Intermediates Hurdles (39.10) behind the 38.96 (IL #10) personal best from O’Fallon’s KeiJhuan James.

Roland Prenzler of Edwardsville ended his final conference meet with a pair of wins in the distance events. Prenzler easily won the 3200 Meter Run (9:58.46) before coming back to win the 1600 Meter Run with a 4:23.20 personal best.

 

DuKane Conference Boys @ Lake Park

Wheaton North won the inaugural outdoor title in this conference scoring 150 points. Wheaton-Warrenville South (127.5 points) and Batavia (118 points) finished second and third.

Cedric Rowzee of Wheaton-Warrenville South was one of the stars in this meet. Rowzee ran 10.81 to win the 100 Meter Dash with Glenbard North’s Xavier Curtis finishing second (11.01). Rowzee came back to run 22.05 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Rowzee also anchored Wheaton-Warrenville South to the win in the 400 Meter Relay (42.53) ahead of Batavia (42.91).

The three distance races in this meet were great. Four runners dipped under 9:20 in the 3200 Meter Run. Wheaton-Warrenville South’s Sean Maison ran 9:15.07 to win the race with Bob Liking of St. Charles East (9:17.25), William Hauenstein of Wheaton-Warrenville South (9:19.53), and Batavia’s Chris Levario (9:19.81) following. Maison came back to run 4:21.41 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Damian Rodriguez of Batavia (4:22.11) and Bennett Melone of St. Charles East (4:24.25) finishing second and third.

Five runners were under two-minutes in the 800 Meter Run. Charles Murphy of St. Charles East ran 1:56.62 to edge Batavia’s Adam Kennedy (1:56.81) for the win.

Wheaton North’s Josh James won the 110 High Hurdles (14.88). Eli Odell of Wheaton North ran 38.94 (IL #9) to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles ahead of James (39.03) and Geneva’s Onyi Ukaobasi (39.18).

Geneva’s Lawi Djuma jumped 20-11 to win the Long Jump and jumped 43-11.25 to win the Triple Jump.

 

DuPage Valley Boys @ Naperville North

Naperville Central won their first conference title since 1990 as they scored 174 points to finish ahead of Neuqua Valley (139 points). Central’s win came from winning eight of the meet’s 12 running events.

Thomas Shilgalis was one of the Naperville Central athletes that won two individual events. Six runners were under two-minutes in the 800 Meter Run led by Shilgalis and his win (1:57.57) ahead of Naperville North’s McLean Griffin (1:57.92). Shilgalis came back to run 4:21.31 to win the 1600 Meter Run edging Naperville North’s Nick Trattner by seven hundredths of a second (4:21.38). North’s Jake Allen finished third (4:22.11).

Cade McDonald was Central’s other double winner as he ran 11.00 to win the 100 Meter Dash and ran 22.78 to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Naperville Central swept all four relays in this five-team conference meet. The Redhawks ran 43.23 to win the 400 Meter Relay, 1:30.18 to win the 800 Meter Relay, 3:30.34 to win the 1600 Meter Relay, and 8:03.78 to win the 3200 Meter Relay ahead of Neuqua Valley (8:04.90).

Wes Beitler of Waubonsie Valley pulled away in the final 400-meters to run 9:42.30 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Neuqua Valley’s Matt Jett (9:45.16). Donovan Turner of Neuqua Valley swept both hurdle races. The all-state runner had not competed in a meet since injuring his hamstring at the beginning of April. Turner ran 15.08 to win his section and title in the 110 High Hurdles. Turner came back to run 41.32 to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles.

In the field events, Temi Osobamiro of Metea Valley won both the Long Jump (21-9.75) and the Triple Jump (44-4.25). Matthew Appel of Neuqua Valley won both the Shot Put (55-10) and the Discus (171-8, IL #8).

 

Fox Valley Conference Boys @ Huntley

Huntley dominated on their home track winning the conference title (159 points) with Dundee-Crown the closest team finishing second (86 points).

Huntley ran the fastest time in the state in winning the 3200 Meter Relay (7:49.91). Huntley ran 42.35 (IL #8) to win the 400 Meter Relay ahead of Dundee-Crown (42.45). Dundee-Crown came back to run 1:28.88 (IL #5) to win the 800 Meter Relay. Jason Miller, who was on the Dundee-Crown relay) ran 22.32 to win the 200 Meter Dash by one hundredth of a second ahead of Huntley’s Paul Kerber.

Prairie Ridge swept the top two spots in the 800 Meter Run as Ethan Baker ran 1:57.42 to finish ahead of teammate Grant Jensen (1:57.72). Huntley captured the first two places in the 1600 Meter Run as Ian Geisler ran 4:24.07 for the win ahead of teammate Jeremy Roe (4:25.90).

 

Central State Eight Conference Boys @ Springfield Southeast

Springfield captured the conference crown with 141 points. Chatham-Glenwood (111.5 points) and Normal University (85.5 points) finished second and third.

Robert Williams led the way for the Senators with four wins, two of them individual. Williams led Springfield 1-2 sweeps in the hurdles starting with a 14.78 win in the 110 High Hurdles ahead of teammate Ryan Waldinger (16.38). It was the same order in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles as Williams ran 38.84 ahead of Waldinger (40.55). Williams was also the anchor on Springfield’s winning 400 Meter Relay (43.52) and 1600 Meter Relay (3:26.20).

Lanphier’s Khalil Ross jumped a personal best 45-6.50 to win the Triple Jump. Springfield Southeast’s David Emuze was a double winner as he jumped 22-4 to win the Long Jump and clearing 6-2 to win the High Jump. Rochester’s Clay Alewelt had a personal best of 51-8 to win the Shot Put and threw 157-2 to win the Discus.

 

Big 12 Conference Boys @ Danville

Bloomington overpowered the field winning the team championship with 142 points.

The Pole Vault was one of the most competitive events as four athletes cleared 14-feet or better. Kyle Mulhern of Peoria Notre Dame and Liam McGill both cleared 15-0 (IL #7) with Mulhern winning on fewer misses.

Danville’s Quemarii Williams ran a season’s best 48.76 (IL #2) to win the 400 Meter Dash with Bloomington’s Drew Crooks running 49.72 to finish second. Crooks also jumped 21-5.75 to win the Long Jump. Urbana’s Jeremiah Hamilton ran a personal best 21.92 (IL #8) to win the 200 Meter Dash.

Charlie Wetzel ran 9:36.39 to win the 3200 Meter Run with Bloomington’s Nick Doud finishing second (9:45.68). The two runners repeated that order in the 1600 Meter Run with Wetzel winning (4:29.06) ahead of Doud (4:30.51).

Bloomington’s CJ Hyde won two individual events. Hyde ran 15.35 to win the 110 High Hurdles and ran 41.57 to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles.

 

Southwest Prairie Conference Boys @ Plainfield East

Minooka won the team title with 92 points ahead of Plainfield South (75 points) and Plainfield East (71 points).

Plainfield North’s Kyle Burke won both hurdle events starting with a 15.14 winning time in the 110 High Hurdles and ending with a 40.45 time to win the 300 Meter Hurdles.

The 3200 Meter Relay was close as Oswego East ran a season’s best of 8:02.84 (IL #7) to win the event ahead of Minooka (8:04.97). Christian Knowlton of Plainfield South ran a seasonal best of 9:34.92 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Plainfield Central’s Jonathan Goetsch (9:40.36). Jason Dworak of Joliet Central won the 1600 Meter Run (4:24.92) just ahead of Knowlton (4:25.72) and Oswego East’s Brad Wiggins (4:26.02).

The field events produced some big performances. Romeoville’s Amiri Buchanan had a 57-6 put to win the Shot Put and a 167-5 throw to win the Discus. Minooka’s DaVonte Welcher jumped 23-3 (IL #7) to win the Long Jump ahead of Plainfield Central’s Geremiah Lawson (23-0.50). Enoch Antwi of Romeoville jumped 45-5 to win the Triple Jump with Plainfield South’s Myles Lincoln finishing second (45-0.50).

Defending state champion in the 100 and 200 Marcellus Moore did not compete in this meet. He last competed at the Hunt Invitational on April 25. Moore is scheduled to compete in next week’s Ottawa Sectional Meet according to his coach Tony Holler.

 

Mid-Suburban League Boys @ Barrington

Prospect’s third-place finish in the 1600 Meter Relay behind the win from Barrington in that event was enough for Prospect to hold on to win the League title with 128.5 points. Barrington scored 126.5 points to finish second with Rolling Meadows (106 points) finishing third.

John Moellenkamp led Prospect with two individual wins. Moellenkamp ran 11.13 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 22.26 to win the 200 Meter Dash. The junior was also a part of Prospect’ quartet that ran 42.69 to win the 400 Meter Dash ahead of Hoffman Estates (42.84).

Josh Methner of Hersey ran a personal best 4:22.11 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Prospect’s Erik Snell placing second (4:22.93). Methner was on Hersey’s quartet that ran 8:01.54 (IL #5) to win the 3200 Meter Relay with Barrington running 8:02.27 (IL #6) to finish second.

Joseph Boyer of Rolling Meadows had a 60-0 put to win the Shot Put by six feet. James Leahy of Fremd cleared 14-8 to win the Pole Vault.

 

Central Suburban League-South @ Niles North

Maine South edged Evanston 158 to 152 to claim the South divisional title.

Glenbrook South’s Nathan Shapiro ran 39.88 to win the 300 Intermediate Hurdles and jumped 21-1 to win the Long Jump. Maine South’s Tommy Brady ran a solo 9:15.66 to win the 3200 Meter Run finishing 16 seconds ahead of New Trier’s Ford Baker (9:31.59).

Will Houser of Glenbrook South ran a personal best of 1:57.29 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Evanston’s Max Peterson (1:58.08). Maine South’s Joey Kasch won the 1600 Meter Run (4:24.45) by more than three seconds ahead of Peterson (4:27.86).

 

Central Suburban League-North @ Maine West

Deerfield scored 197 points to easily win the divisional title with Maine East scoring 100.5 points to finish second.

Sam Liokumovich tuned up for the state series with a 62-2 put to win the Shot Put and a 172-10 throw to win the Shot Put. Teammate Henry Boudreau finished second in both events.

Maine West’s Damon Street cleared a personal best 6-7 (IL #4) to win the High Jump.

 

Western Big Six Conference Boys @ East Moline

Moline dominated this meet scoring 191 points to win the team title with East Moline scoring 105 points to finish second.

Quincy’s Jordan Johnson threw 198-9 to easily win the Discus by more than 50-feet. Johnson also had a 58-0 put to win the Shot Put. Alleman’s Seth Sottos ran 10.95 to edge Rock Island’s Austin Taylor by one hundredth of a second to win the 100 Meter Dash. Taylor ran 22.17 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Sottos (22.61).

 

Southwest Suburban Red Conference Boys @ Thornridge

Leonard Pollard of Thornridge was the top performer in this meet. Pollard jumped 22-3 to win the Long Jump, 10.94 to win the 100 Meter Dash, and 22.33 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Pollard was part of Thornridge’s quartet that ran 42.77 to win the 400 Meter Relay just ahead of Andrew’s 42.82 second-place time.
