It was a simple move by Josh Methner that secured a state championship for him last November. He enters this senior season with two state championships as well as two All-American honors from last fall’s National Championship meets.

He also enters as the prohibitive favorite with some hungry runners waiting for their chance. Jared Kries battled Methner last spring at Distance Night in Palatine winning the dual between the two runners. We will be hungry after a disappointing 2018 state meet. Charlie Wetzel is the runner that some have not heard of but has the talent to challenge for the title. Then, there are a talented group of runners led by Brett Gardner and Ethan Kern that could pressure to challenge for the state title.

It should be a fun year to watch in this classification.

Here is a look at some of the top runners that will participate in Class 3A this fall.

Josh Methner

SR – Arlington Heights (Hersey)

Notes – One of the things that I like when I watch Josh run is how he uses the lessons from one race and then applies them to his next effort. He let Rory Cavan get away from him at Fenton in the first race of the season. For the rest of the year, Methner made sure he made the first move before the rest of the competition could respond. That is how he won the state title last November. His two national races, where he earned All-American honors in both, came because he was not afraid to go after the race and again not to wait for that final move. Those experiences will pay off when he gets to nationals this fall.

The same thing applied during track. Jared Kries got by him at the end of the 3200 Meter Run at Distance Night in Palatine. When he got to Charleston, Josh made the move that no one could respond to or no one could sneak up on him.

Great things are ahead for him this fall as he could be one of the top runners in the nation. He will have the target on his back. I am sure it is something that he relishes.

His Coach Kevin Young said: “He has done a great job of not letting the moment get bigger than it is. When asked about defending his cross title, Josh responded, “I very much look forward to defending my title!” He recognizes that the harder guys come at him, the more he’s going to benefit in the long run. Kries taking him down at the Distance night from 1000m out showed Josh what will happen if he never asserts himself into the race. Rivera nipping him at the line at Wanner showed him what taking any lead for granted would do for him. These were VERY important lessons for him to learn in back to back weekends. It would’ve been very easy for him to feel bad for himself considering he lost two races by a combined .7seconds but not Josh. He used those losses as fuel! He’s really stepped up as a leader. We have been VERY blest the past few years that Josh never had to take the role of a vocal leader but he’s taking on the role just fine so far. He wants to take his talents beyond high school competition, so we are just looking to have fun and grow through this whole process.”

2018 XC Finish – 6th, Foot Locker Nationals; 15th, Nike Cross Nationals; 1st, Class 3A State (14:11)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:02.19; 1600m – 4:13.76 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:15.29; 3200m – 9:02.54

Ethan Kern

SR – Elmhurst (York)

Notes – There are a number of things that I can say about Ethan. His perseverance would be his one thing. He’s had a number of nagging injuries during his high school career and setbacks. His state race last November was not his best race of the year. He did bounce back and run in the Nike Cross Nationals and the Foot Locker Nationals. Ethan is a typical York “team runner”. He is a loyal teammate. He could have gone after times last spring. His initial plan was to double. He ended up running a leg of the 3200 Meter Relay with his teammates, friends and they ended up getting an all-state medal.

He will be a runner that could be one of the top 10 runners again in the state. He could also leave a legacy at York that involves not only himself, but the rest of his teammates.

His coach and father Charlie Kern said: “He has a desire to succeed that rivals some of the best York runners of all-time.  He has a resume that causes him to standout from his peers, but he has a lot of unfinished business and my greatest task will be to keep him fresh for November and December.  He did not have the track season that his peers had, but he didn't have a great track season his Sophomore year either and he did well in the fall of his Jr year.  Unlike last year, he will be on everyone's radar and there will be high expectations from people who like to talk about XC, but he will not try to meet those expectations.  Ethan is focused on improvement over last year.  He will be mentioned with the group of athletes chasing after Josh Methner and will certainly want to improve upon his 9th place finish at state last year.  But like the rest of his teammates, his is most focused on team improvement.”

2018 XC Finish – 35th, Foot Locker Nationals; 28th, Nike Cross Nationals; 9th, Class 3A State Meet (14:32)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 1:56.6r; 1600m – 4:19.51; 3200m 9:25.20

Brett Gardner

SR – Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East)

Notes – Brett made huge strides in his times and running in 2018-2019. He earned all-state honors last fall when he finished 14th at Detweiller Park last November. He had huge improvements during the spring running 9:06 for 3200-meters at the Arcadia Invitational and then 4:11.44 at Distance Night in Palatine. His season concluded by earning all-state honors finishing fourth in the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run. He could be among the top five this season. His schedule this season includes running at the Richard Spring Invitational on September 21.

His Coach Ross Widinski said: “I've been very impressed this summer not only by Brett's hard work, as usual, but by the fact that he has taken over as team leader. I see him motivating the young guys and trying to get them to truly buy in to the running mentality. Brett will continue to put in the miles this summer and most of the season as we prepare him for the unbelievable distance talent our state will see this year.   Brett will once again try to challenge the top talent in the state, and I trust he will hold his own.”

2018 XC Finish – 14th, Class 3A State Meet

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 1:59.99; 1600m – 4:11.44; 1 Mile – 4:13.85; 3200m – 9:07.76

Jared Kries

SR – New Lenox (Lincoln-Way Central)

Notes – I would keep a close eye on Jared this fall. He had one huge hiccup at state last November. Earlier in that season at the First to the Finish Invitational, he ran 14:48. He started his 2019 XC Season by running 14:44 to win at Lockport on August 27.

He took huge steps up the mountain last spring that started by winning the 3200 Meter Run at Illinois Top Times in March. His next 3200-meter race came at Distance Night in Palatine where he edged Josh Methner by seven hundredths of a second. Kries ended his season by qualifying for the state meet in the 3200 Meter Run where he finished eighth.

Jared has a lot of drive in him with I guess a huge chip on his shoulder. Big things are ahead in this senior season for him.

His Coach John Taylor said: “Jared Kreis has had a great Summer of running after his outstanding indoor and outdoor track seasons. Jared not only is a hard worker, but he is not afraid to push the limits to the max in his racing. He is a student of our sport and the leader of the Running Knights. He will continue to amaze us this Fall and is looking to do great things at the State Finals.”

2018 XC Finish – 123rd, Class 3A State Meet (15:31)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:02.81; 1600m – 4:16.39; 1 Mile – 4:14.62; 3200m – 9:02.47

Charlie Wetzel

SR – Normal (Community West)

Notes – With all the things that Charlie has accomplished so far in his high school career, I still believe that he flies under the radar for some. This senior is going to make a lot of noise again this fall as well as next spring. He was 16th at state as a sophomore in the Class 2A race in 2017. When his school moved up to Class 3A last year, Wetzel raised his game by finishing seventh last November. He finished sixth in the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run at state last May. Let’s see what is next for him. He started his season by finishing second at Detweiller at Dark running 15:03.

His Coach Chad Aubin said: “Charlie is excited for the season. After placing 7th at XC state last year and 6th in the 2 mile during track season, he confident in his ability to challenge for the top of the podium. He has had a great summer of training and has become a great leader and role model for younger athletes on our team. Can't wait to see him push the limits this year.”

2018 XC Finish – 7th, Class 3A State Meet (14:30)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:24.97; 3200m – 9:14.44

Guillermo Ibarra

SR – Berwyn-Cicero (Morton)

Notes – I think Guillermo realizes how good he could be towards the end of last cross country season when he first finished third at the 3A Marist Sectional. His three-mile time of 14:38 was 29 seconds faster than he had run all season. The following week at Detweiller, he finished 24th.

He then exploded during track season. Guillermo hung with Jared Kries through all of the 3200 Meter Run at Illinois Top Times where he finished second. At the outdoor state meet, he hung back and moved at the right time to finish third.

Now that he knows what he can do, let’s see what fun things he does this fall.

His Coach Bill Bloom said: “Guillermo had a great summer of running. He is really excited about this season. There are so many great runners in Illinois this season. It's going to be fun. Guillermo wants to improve on all his times and perform better in the big races. As a coach Guillermo does everything I ask, it has really been fun coaching him.”

2018 XC Finish – 24th, Class 3A State Meet (14:50)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:20.35; 3200m – 9:11.74i

3A Runners to Watch (in alphabetical order)

Jake Allen

SR – Naperville (North)

Notes – We should see big things from Jake this season. He saw gradual improvement last fall dropping his times from the mid-15:30’s at the beginning of October to 14:56 at state. His track season was dynamic running 4:22 for 1600-meters and then finishing seventh in the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run in Charleston. He started this season by running 14:56 to win the Boys race at Detweiller at Dark at the end of July.

His Coach Tim Brown said: “Jake has reached a whole new level of maturity and training this summer and has set a tremendous standard of commitment and hard work for summer camp.  His momentum and success from track last spring has continued to grow, and I anticipate him to have an incredible season.  What I like most about Jake, though, is that his focus is always about the team.  He is always helping/encouraging the rest of the team in workouts.  He puts their performance/success/improvements ahead of his own.  On Friday distance runs/game days, he finds underclassman, introduces himself to them, and makes sure they feel included.  He chooses to run with them to get to know them, when he could have easily just run with his upperclassmen friends.”

2018 XC Finish – 34th, Class 3A State Meet (14:56)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:03.0; 1600m – 4:22.11; 3200m – 9:17.85

Wes Beitler

SR – Aurora (Waubonsie Valley)

Notes – A runner that will surprise some this fall. Wes made it to state last year in cross-country placing 86th. He took a step up during track season making it to state in the Class 3A 3200 Meter Run. He dropped it down to 9:38. He knows now what he can do. It will be a matter of running his race in order to finish in the top 20 in November.

His Coach Kevin Rafferty said: “Beitler has been a monster. His fitness level is around where Groeber was going into his senior year. Part of his journey is year is going to have to be how he balances to being the best individual runner he can be with the best front runner, pace setter he can be for his teammates. It's a fine line.”

2018 XC Finish – 86th, Class 3A State Meet

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:07.22i; 1600m – 4:26.21 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:27.65; 3200m – 9:38.57

Dillon Blake

SR – Mundelein

Notes – Dillon made the step up last fall finishing 12th at the state meet after finishing 41st as a sophomore. His personal best dropped down to 9:16 last spring after running 9:23 the year before. A runner to keep an eye on in the top 10.

His Coach Kurt Rutz said: “Dillon has been steadily building his miles this summer and looks to be better than he was last year at this point.  We have had no injury setbacks to this point.  Both he and Carter Schorr (don't overlook this guy) attended the U of Wisconsin- Madison running camp and had a very good experience there.  Dillon is the team leader and has been balancing his own training with pushing the team to work together.  Dillon has the goal of finishing in the top 5 at State this year, and I believe this is within his reach.”

2018 XC Finish – 12th, Class 3A State Meet (14:38)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:23.55 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:25.01; 3200m – 9:16.14

Tyler Cushing

SR  – Bolingbrook

Notes – We could see a big fall season from Tyler. Illness slowed him down during the track season, but a good summer of training has him ready to go. He finished 10th last fall at state after winning at the Marist Sectional. His big race came the week after state when he finished seventh in Terre Haute missing qualifying for nationals by one place.

His Coach John Sullivan said: “Tyler had some setbacks towards the end of indoor and the entire outdoor track season. This was all due to a respiratory illness that took medical professionals a while to figure out. The setbacks where very difficult for Tyler because he is such a competitor and he wasn’t able to train, then race with the other top runners in the state. Tyler has bounced back very strong with his summer training and has “big goals” for the upcoming XC season, IHSA state series and beyond. My guess is he’s currently sitting below the radar among his peers as the “Tops in the State”, which is the perfect spot to be going into the start of the season.”

2018 XC Finish – 7th, NXN Midwest Regional; 10th, Class 3A State (14:34)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:08.2i; 1600m – 4:27.66i; 3200m – 9:18.06i

Nicolas Dovalovsky

JR – Naperville (Neuqua Valley)

Notes – It is hard to imagine that Nick had not run a full cross country season at the beginning of last year. He stepped up in a huge way at the end of last year as he was the team’s third runner at the state meet finishing 28th. He is the only runner back from the 2018 state team that earned a trophy. This year he should step into the #1 position for the Wildcats.

His Coach Paul Vandersteen said: “Nicolas has had a good summer after a track season where he had a hard time finding a rhythm after some stress reactions in his shin.  The key for Nicolas is to stay healthy.  If he can do that, he should have a successful 2nd season as an xc runner.”

2018 XC Finish – 28th, Class 3A State Meet (14:50)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:00.69; 1600m – 4:31.45

Jack Ehlert

SR – LaGrange (Lyons Township)

Notes – Jack should be one of the top runners for the Lions’ pack this fall. They will need his leadership in pursuit of a trophy this fall. A top 25 finish is also within his reach.

His Coach Michael Danner said: “Our top 4 (Ehlert, Hays, Thorpe, and Madell)  have been pretty much stride for stride in everything they have done. We have a group of about 10 guys that will be vying for those final top 7 spots. Our expectations are to challenge for a top 3 position at state and NXN berth. Ehlert had a good summer preceded by a good finish to the track season being a part of our 4x8 that was all-state.”

2018 XC Finish – 38th, Class 3A State Meet

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:03.58; 1600m – 4:26.07; 3200m – 9:44.26i

Ian Geisler

SR – Huntley

Notes – His track times last spring indicate he is ready to do huge things in this 2019 XC Season. Ian will be the main man for the Red Raiders as most of his top five teammates graduated. The 9:08 that he ran for 3200-meters indicates that he is ready for a top ten state finish.

His Coach Matt Kaplan said: “Ian Geisler is coming off a fantastic junior year and has big goals for his senior season. He earned all-state honors last fall and I know he's capable of that accolade again this year. Ian made some impressive progress this past spring in track with new PRs of 9:08/4:18.  Ian has spent his senior summer like his previous 3; very focused and determined.  As a coach I couldn't be more pleased with the work ethic shown by Ian.  He works extremely hard and reaps the benefits of all his time spent invested.  It's been an honor getting to watch him grow and develop in our program and I'm excited to see him reach more accomplishments this senior season.  He has his goals set that are centered on finishing strong at the state meet in November.

2018 XC Finish – 17th, Class 3A State Meet (14:44)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 1:59.13; 1600m – 4:18.54; 3200m – 9:08.75

Jack Gilboy

JR – Lake Zurich

Notes – Jack made huge improvements at the end of last cross country season dropping his times by almost 30 seconds. He now enters his junior season with possibilities of landing in the top 25 when he gets to Peoria in November. He dropped a huge 9:33 at Distance Night in Palatine in the 3200 Meter Run showing  he is ready to take the next step up.

His Coach JB Hanson said: “He is our training leader, and he adds a degree of toughness to our team.  Jack might be the toughest kid I have ever coached.”

2018 XC Finish – 37th, Class 3A State (14:57)

2019 Track Finish – 1600m – 4:33.50; 3200m – 9:36.18

William Hauenstein

SR – Wheaton-Warrenville South

Notes – William was the team’s #1 runner in last year’s championship season for the Tigers. He should be the leaders again this fall as he will be in position to finish in the top five. He dropped under 9:20 for 3200-meters last fall. Hauenstein is a tough runner in the final mile of a xc race. He showed that at state last year. That type of grittiness will pay off at state series time.

His Coach Chris Kuntz said: “He is a two time Cross Country All-Stater who finished 8th last year in 14:30. He is the 3rd returner from last year.  Billy missed a couple of weeks early in the summer but he's up to speed.”

2018 XC Finish – 8th, Class 3A State Meet (14:30)

2019 Track Bests – 800m 2:03.25; 1600m – 4:27.15i; 3200m – 9:19.53

Colin Hill

JR – Elmhurst (York)

Notes – Showed great improvement throughout last season moving up to the Varsity Top Seven at the Peoria Invitational at the end of September. He had a mental toughness that you don’t see a lot in sophomores. That drive, that will should help this fall for his team.

His Coach Charlie Kern said – “2nd returning Soph from 2018.  Colin had a phenomenal XC, but he too was disappointed individually, as he was outside his goal of individual all-state honors.  Colin was running very well during the indoor season, but then got a virus during spring break and never fully recovered.  He has prepared very well during the summer.  He no doubt has his sights set on being all-state and helping the Dukes finish higher than 4th.”

2018 XC Finish – 30th, Class 3A State Meet (14:53)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:03.9i; 1600m – 4:26.27i; 3200m – 9:46.91

Richie Jacobo

SR – Palatine

Notes – Richie has the talent to finish in the top 15 this fall. The main thing for him is staying far away from the injury bug. It has slowed him down in recent seasons. He still got healthy at the right time to earn all-state honors last November. Richie qualified for state last May in the 3200 Meter Run. he won his section on his way to finishing 11th overall.

His Coach Chris Quick said: “Richard finished the track season on such a high note by winning Section 1 of the Class 3A 3200 meter run. After a turbulent season with respect to his home life and his academics (he took 8 classes), we seem to have reached a better balance. He has trained well this summer and most importantly stayed injury free. He missed significant time with IT band issues in both CC and track (he missed the first 6 weeks of CC last year and still finished All-State). He seems powerful, strong, and healthy, but we haven’t really tested him yet. His goal is to finish Top 10.”

2018 XC Finish – 23rd, Class 3A State Meet (14:49)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:03.27; 1600m – 4:24.20; 3200m – 9:30.49

Joey Kasch

SR – Park Ridge (Maine South)

Notes – Joey had the benefit of training with all-state runner Tommy Brady the past three years. Those lessons could pay off for him this fall as he looks to finish in the top 25. He had a breakthrough track season when he earned all-state honors placing seventh in the 1600 Meter Run State finals.
His Coach Greg Nordahl said – “Joey trained for the last few years running behind Tommy Brady and occasionally in front of Tommy. He has learned the hard work and effort to be able to be a top tier runner in Illinois from Tommy. He has grown in confidence and strength and looks to be a force in the state. He ran well at the IHSA state track meet (6th in the 1600) and has really had a great summer. He does not have a training partner on the team but looks to be far ahead (like Tommy his junior year) of a strong pack. He has an extraordinarily graceful and efficient stride and spectacular endurance. We have worked on his finishing speed and I think he is ready to make his mark in the state.”

2018 XC Finish – 44th, Class 3A State Meet (14:59)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:19.82 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:21.44;

Aidan King

SR – St. Charles (East)

Notes – This could be the year that Aidan breaks into all-state territory. He just missed last year finishing 26th at Detweiller Park. He missed the finals at the Class 3A State Track Meet as he qualified for the 1600 Meter Run for the second year in a row,

His Coach Chris Bosworth said: “Aidan ran 14:50 last year in XC and ran 9:40 into strong winds at WV.  He ran 4:21 and qualified for the 1600 for the second year in a row.  Look for him to race with Bob and Micah this year.”

2018 XC Finish – 26th, Class 3A State Meet (14:50)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 1:59.07; 1600m – 4:21.73 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:23.44; 3200m – 9:40.47

Jacob Kluckhohn

SR – Wheaton-Warrenville South

Notes – Injuries slowed Jacob down for most of track season. He did come back to help his team qualify for the Class 3A State Meet in the 3200 Meter Relay. Kluckhohn had a solid cross country season that included with an all-state finish at Detweiller Park and a state team title. He will be in the top ten this fall if he can stay healthy.

His Coach Chris Kuntz said: “He hurt his ankle on a training run early during indoors and missed most of the season.  He recovered to run on our State qualifying 4X8 team and he's healthy and has had a great summer.”

2018 XC Finish – 15th, Class 3A State Meet (14:43)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:37.71i; 3200m – 9:54.08i

Daniel Klysh

SR – Elmhurst (York)

Notes – It’s hard to call him a surprise since he was York’s third man last year, but he could be. Daniel ran 14:59 at state last November. He ran 14:38 a month before at the Peoria Invitational. Part of York’s All-State 3200 Meter Relay for a second year in a row.

His Coach Charlie Kern said: “Daniel left soccer in 8th grade to be part of the Long Green Line and has 2 all-state track awards to his name, but he has unfinished business in cross country. Daniel's performances fell off a bit at the end of 2018 cross country season, he is fixed on improving is looking forward to running his best in November.  He is expecting to be in the top 25 this time around in order to help his team improve on last years' 4th place.”

2018 XC Finish – 43rd, Class 3A State Meet (14:59)

2019 Track Bests – 400m – 51.76; 800m – 1:56.0r; 1600m – 4:19.64 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:21.26

Bob Liking

SR – St. Charles (East)

Notes – Bob did not have his best race at state running 20 seconds slower than he did at the Richard Spring Invitational. A runner that we should see in the top 25 in November. He did qualify for the Class 3A State Track Meet n the 3200 Meter Run.

His Coach Chris Bosworth said: “Bob Liking had a breakout season last year in both XC and Track.  The state XC meet did not go as Bob planned, but he has learned a lot from that meet.  His track season was fueled by that day and he was able to run 9:17 and 4:21.  He has had a great summer of training and is looking forward to racing with his teammates.”

2018 XC Finish – 64th, Class 3A State Meet (15:10)

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 2:09.48; 1600m – 4:22.97; 3200m – 9:28.61

Michael Moriarty

SR – Elmhurst (York)

Notes – Michael could be one of the most improved runners in Class 3A this fall. The confidence that he got from a breakout track season could bleed into this fall. Moriarty ran 1:56 and was one of three York runners under 4:20 last spring. Michael was part of York’s all-state 3200 Meter Relay quartet.

His Coach Charlie Kern said: “Michael Moriarty stepped up to be the man during the track season.  He stepped up front a center and now has the fastest 800m and 1600m PR on the team.  A major key to his success was his ability to string together months of training.  Michael has continued to get stronger at the long distances and he is now running up front in group 1.  Michael is ahead of last years' schedule and we know that summer improvement correlates with autumnal success.”

2018 XC Finish – 101st, Class 3A State Meet

2019 Track Bests – 800m – 1:56.32; 1600m – 4:18.83 (Magis); 1 Mile – 4:20.34

Nathan Schmitt

SR – Lake Forest

Notes – Nathan flew under the radar most of last year before finishing second in the 2A State Meet. Lake Forest is now in Class 3A for the next two years. Does he fly under the radar in his new classification? He did not make it to Charleston last spring. He did run 9:12.95 for 3200-meters at Distance Night in Palatine. Don’t be surprised if he finishes in the top 15 in November.

2018 XC Finish – 2nd, Class 2A State Meet (14:48)

2019 Track Bests – 1600m – 4:32.03i; 3200m – 9:12.95

Max Svienty

SR – Arlington Heights (Hersey)

Notes – Max gives Hersey a strong 1-2 punch up front with defending 3A State Champion Josh Methner. A runner that you could see in the top 15 in November. Part of Hersey’s 3200 Meter Relay that ran in the prelims of the 3A State Meet.

His Coach Kevin Young said: “We were unsatisfied with how his track season concluded. He’s had his fair share of ups and downs over the past two seasons that’ll catapult him into the 2019 campaign. I’ve seen some VERY special things from him, but I still don’t think he’s realized how good he can be. How cliché it may sound but skies the limit for him. I think he’s a dark horse among the top runners in Illinois this season.”

Micah Wilson

Notes – Micah had a fantastic freshman season including running under 9:30 three times for 3200-meters and qualifying for state meet in that event. Wilson was among the Saints’ top runners last fall. Bigger things are ahead for him in the next few months.

His Coach Chris Bosworth said: “Micah Wilson had a fantastic freshman year. 14:59 and 9:25 is something that he is going to build off for this season.  He races like an upperclassmen and is looking forward to racing with his teammates.”
