Illinois HS XC - Weekend Highlights - October 21, 2019

You could say that it was a busy week with 98% of the teams in Illinois competing in meets.

Here is the rundown of the conference and major meets that took place over the past week. Recaps of the three meets that ILXCTF.com was at is on the links below.

 

Southwest Prairie Conference

Saturday Meets

 

Southwest Suburban Conference

The anticipated showdown between Lincoln-Way Central’s Jared Kreis and Lincoln-Way East’s Brett Gardner did materialize as expected as the two runners get ready for the state series. Kreis pushed the pace early on as he usually does. It was Gardner who had the final move as he ran 14:16.2 to claim the conference title ahead of Kreis (14:25.7). Lockport Coach Tom Razo, the meet host school, when asked the about the course length, he termed it as a “short” 3-miles.

Sandburg’s Ben Giblin (14:46) and Will Giblin (14:49) finished third and fourth while Bolingbrook’s Tyler Cushing finished fifth (15:11.2).

Sandburg looked impressive in their conference win with 28 points. The Eagles placed 6 runners in the top 9 with only a 35 second split on their top five runners. Sam Rodriguez (6) led the Sandburg pack followed in order by Ismail Tineh, Griffin Lehnhardt, and Ahmad Alhayek. Lincoln-Way Central (86 points) and Lockport Township (104 points) finished second and third.

Ella Jeffries of Sandburg ran 17:46 to win the Girls conference race by 30 seconds ahead of Lockport’s Caroline Turner. #23 Lockport placed 5 runners in the top10 scoring 32 points to win the team title ahead of #18 Lincoln-Way Central (58 points) and Sandburg (82 points).

 

DuPage Valley Conference

#14 Naperville North moved in the final mile to put five runners in the top 15 to win the conference title with 48 points. #10 Waubonsie Valley (57 points) finished second with #22 Neuqua Valley (72 points) and #13 Naperville Central (76 points) placing third and fourth.

North’s Jake Allen ran 15:00 for the individual win as Neuqua Valley’s Nicolas Dovalovsky ran 15:07 to finish second. Waubonsie Valley had the advantage through four runners ahead of Naperville North (28 to 33) led by the third-place finish from Zach Benziger. It was North’s pack that was the difference as Allen was followed by Julian Head (9th), Chase Burrell (11th), Tommy Paltzer (12), and Gabe Ryan (15th). The split between Head and Ryan was only 15 seconds with a top five split of 50 seconds.

Top ranked Naperville North again captured the Girls conference title (24 points) placing seven runners in the top 10. #24 Neuqua Valley (77 points), #16 Naperville Central (83 points) and #19 Metea Valley (93 points) were the next three teams.

North’s Maggie Gamboa was dominant in the individual race as she ran 17:02 for the win. Ashley Heidenrich of Waubonsie Valley (17:31) and Sophia Sandy of Metea Valley (17:42) finished second and third.

The three time defending 3A state champions had a 72 second split on their top five runners. Their split on their second through fifth runners was 25 seconds with Molly Morton (4th), Audrey Mendrys (5th), Lucy Westlake (6th), and Sophie Golobitsch (8th) part of that group.

 

Mid Suburban League

#5 Hersey won their fourth straight league title at Deer Grove East Forest Preserve scoring 36 points with four runners finishing in the top six. The course was modified due to course conditions on portions of the park. Josh Methner led the Hersey win running 14:32 to tie his course record. Palatine’s Richie Jacobo ran 14:48 to finish second ahead of Hersey’s Max Svienty (15:03) and Rolling Meadows’ Stephen Barretto (15:18). Palatine finished second (55 points) ahead of #24 Barrington (78 points) and #16 Prospect (108 points).

Quinn Rudy (5th), Colin Safford (6th), and Luis Vasquez (21th) were Hersey’s other top five runners. Their split off Methner was 84 seconds. Their split from Svienty to Vasquez was 53 seconds.

#7 Barrington made a huge statement in their league win in the Girls race. The Fillies placed five runners in the top 10 to score 25 points for the win ahead of #6 Prospect (57 points), #11 Fremd (72 points), and #25 Hersey (94 points).

Molly FitzPatrick ran 17:23 for the individual win with teammate Allison Drage second (17:39). Prospect’s Audrey Ginsberg finished third (17:43) just ahead of Barrington’s third runner Alyssa Norris (17:46). Anna Harden of Hersey finished fifth (17:56).

Anne Berquist (8th) and Morgan Magro (10th) were the team’s fourth and fifth runners. The team’s top five split was 75 seconds.

 

Central Suburban League

#6 New Trier used a 28 second split on their top five runners to capture the Boys league championship with 38 points Saturday morning at Glenbrook South High School. #9 Maine South (54 points), Deerfield (110 points), and #15 Glenbrook South (111 points) finished second through fourth.

Maine South’s Joey Kasch made it look easy in winning the individual race (15:00) ahead of Highland Park’s Jason Polydoris and Maine South’s Adam Christopher who finished second and third both timed at 15:16.

The Trevians placed their scorers in the top 11 with Charlie Siebert running 15:17 to place fourth to lead the team. His teammates Nick Falk (5th), JD Shelly (8th), Conor O’Neill (10th), and Andrew Flynn (11th) finished close behind.

New Trier repeated as the Girls league champion (49 points) ahead of 2A #2 Vernon Hills (67 points) and Maine South (72 points). New Trier used a 5-6-7 finish from Bridget Forbes, Claire West, and Emma Braband with 5 runners in the top 16.

Vernon Hills’ was led by top 10 finishes from Emma Wakefield (3rd) and Carly Sear (9th). Rose Sheridan, who has been the team’s #1 runner for most of the year, ran third for the Cougars as she placed 14th.

Glenbrook South’s Kate Jortberg won the individual title on her home course covering it in 17:37. Evanston’s Hope Leman finished second (17:50).

 

WSC-Gold Conference

#2 Downers Grove South swept the first seven spots in the Girls race to score a perfect 15 points and winning their 21st conference title in a row. Brenna Cohoon led the sweep for the Lady Mustangs. The senior ran 17:27 on the final time on her home course for a 33 second win ahead of teammate Erin Reidy. The team had a 72 second split on their top five runners that included Sophia McNerney, Rebecca Diddia, and Alex Spang. Their split from Reidy to Spang was 39 seconds. Willowbrook scored 75 points to finish second.

It has been a rollercoaster season for the Downers Grove South heading to this meet. The Mustangs look to be on an upswing as they scored 35 points to win the team title ahead of Morton Township (60 points). Stephen Nicholson led his team with a fourth-place finish as South had a 30 second split among their top five runners. Morton’s Guillermo Ibarra was in control of the individual race. He ran 14:59 for the win with Julian Watson of Hinsdale South running 15:47 to finish second.

 

Big Northern Conference

Class 1A top ranked Winnebago bounced back from a second-place finish earlier in the week at Amboy by winning on their home course Saturday morning. The Indians placed all of their scorers in the top nine to score only 30 points to claim the Girls team title. 2A #12 Dixon (46 points) and 1A #3 Rock Falls (48 points) finished second and third. Bailee Fortney of Rock Falls had a great race in winning the Girls individual title. The senior covered the 2.85-mile Fuller Forest Preserve Course in 16:26 to win by 17 seconds ahead of Winnebago’s Natalia Martino (16:43).

Winnebago had a 68 second split on their top five off Martino’s finish. Marissa Roggensack started the pack (5th) followed by teammates Kaylee Woolery (6th), Katie Erb (8th), and Grace Erb (9th). The split between Roggensack and Grace Erb was 41 seconds.

Class 2A top ranked Dixon had no problems in the Boys race as they placed all seven runners in the top 12 to claim the conference crown with 24 points. 1A #14 Rockford Christian, with D’Artagnon Beaver placing fourth, finished second with 66 points followed by Rock Falls (93 points). Dawson Smith of Rock Falls had no problems in winning this race as he was timed crossing the line in 14:13. It was his second big win of the week after winning at Amboy last Monday.

The Dixon pack followed with Christian Seagren (2), Brock Dregenberg (3), Cadyn Grafton (5), Logan Griswold (6), and Aidan Johnson (8) coming in within 38 seconds of each other.

 

Interstate Eight Conference

2A #2 Kaneland was fully in charge in the Boys race taking the first four places in winning with only 19 points. 2A #13 Sycamore was second (49 points). Austin Adams led the Knights charge as he ran 15:16 for the win 30 seconds ahead of teammates Daniel Occhipinti, Isaiah Dallal, and Ethan Walker. The top five runner split for the Knights was 80 seconds, 50 seconds on their second through fifth runners.

Kaneland’s Rachel Richtman ran 18:17 to win the Girls race by four seconds ahead of LaSalle-Peru’s Ashley Heagy. 2A #19 Kaneland put five runners in the top nine to score 25 points for the conference team win. Sycamore scored 42 points to finish second.

 

Central State Eight

Defending Class 2A Boys state champions Chatham-Glenwood received news earlier in the week that their top runner Graham Turk would miss the rest of the season due to a stress fracture in his tibia. The #7 Titans responded with only a nine second split on their top five winning the conference title (42 points) ahead of 2A #23 Normal University (62 points) and 2A #11 Springfield (68 points).

Matt Herren of Rochester pulled ahead of the pack to win the individual race (15:11) on the Jacksonville Community Park’s 2.9-mile course. U-High’s Alex Hess ran 15:26 to finish second.

Chatham-Glenwood placed their scorers in the top 12 led by Cameron Smith (4th) and followed by Drew Verenski (5th), Thomas Herbst (10th), Aidan Peterson (11th), and Caden Settlemoir (12th).

2A #13 Chatham-Glenwood made it a sweep for the school as the Girls team placed all their scorers in the top 10 in winning with 31 points ahead of 1A #4 Normal University (48 points). The Titans were led by the individual win from Nia Gibson. The sophomore ran 17:43 to win by 20 seconds ahead of Rochester freshman Colleen Zeibert (18:03). Glenwood had a seven second split between second runner Emma Leahy (5th) and fifth-runner Abby Teaman (10th).

 

North Suburban Conference

Warren Township used a 50 seconds split on their top five that finished in the first 12 to defend their Girls conference title with 42 points. Libertyville (54 points) and Lake Zurich (87 points) finished second and third. Lake Zurich freshman Brooke Johnston ran 17:36 for the conference win with Libertyville’s Sheila Tucker (17:50) and Bree Ponchak (17:50) next across the line. Taylor Latza led the Warren placing fifth.

#20 Lake Zurich, paced by top 10 finishes from Jack Gilboy (6th) and Jacob Myers (7th), captured the Boys Conference title with 53 points. Warren Township (68 points), Stevenson (85 points), and #19 Mundelein (96 points) were the next three schools.

Stevenson’s Corey Pacernick ran 14:45 for the win ahead of Lake Forest’s Nathan Schmitt (14:49) and Mundelein’s Dillon Blake (14:54).

 

NIC-10 Conference

Defending Class 2A Girls State Champion flexed their muscles showing that they are ready for the state series. The #8 Blue Thunder placed three in the first four, five in the top 12 to win the conference championship with 25 points. Hononegah scored 38 points to finish second. North’s Gianna Sagona ran 18:10 for the individual win ahead of teammate Madison Diercks (18:27). Belvidere North had a 72 second split on their top five runners.

2A #20 Belvidere North made it a school sweep scoring 41 points to win the Boys conference title. Hononegah (87 points), Rockford Auburn (89 points), and Rockford Guilford (90 points) were the next three teams. North’s Max Beutel ran 15:26 to win the individual race ahead of the Rockford Auburn duo of Jonah Garcia and Peter MacUlan who both were timed at 15:39.

 

Upstate Eight Conference

Glenbard East put 4 runners in the top 10 to claim the Boys conference title with 44 points. Bartlett (63 points) and Aurora East (82 points) finished second and third. South Elgin’s Ryan Harvey covered the rugged Lords Park course in an impressive 16:15 to claim the individual win ahead of Glenbard East’s Austin Ihms (16:27) and Bartlett’s Luke Jennes (16:28).

West Chicago scored 46 points to win the Girls team title led by the fifth-place finish from Caroline Pacer. South Elgin (56 points) and Aurora East (82 points) were the next two teams. All-state runner Naomi Ruff of South Elgin ran 18:31 for the win ahead of Bartlett’s Jenna Buchanan (19:08) and Camille Buchanan (19:11).

 

Fox Valley Conference

Huntley’s Ian Geisler ran 15:20 to win the Boys individual title ahead of Burlington Central’s Anthony Farmer (15:31) and Cary-Grove’s Maxum Caesar (15:43.4).

McHenry, paced by a fourth-place finish from Jessi Garcia and a 27 second split on their top five runners that all finished in the top 10, won the Boys team title (38 points) ahead of Huntley (73 points), 2A #15 Burlington Central (114 points) and 2A #25 Crystal Lake Central (117 points).

Molly Allen finished fourth to help #14 Huntley win the Girls team title 49 – 66 ahead of Cary-Grove. 2A #4 Crystal Lake South (79 points) and 2A #6 Prairie Ridge (84 points) finished third and fourth.

Crystal Lake South captured the first individual spots as freshman Isabella Gonzalez and Mackenzie Aldridge crossed the line within a second of each other. Gonzalez’s winning time was 18:19.

 

North Lake County Conference

It was a classic finish in the Girls race as defending 2A individual champion Brooke Stromsland of Lakes Community ran 17:29 to win the Girls individual title ahead of Aly Negovetich of Grant Community (17:35). Kelli Tosic of Grayslake North ran 18:55 to finish third. 2A #7 Lakes Community, helped by Stromsland’s win and the fourth-place finish from Olivia Schmitt, scored 36 points for the team title. Grayslake Central and Grant Community finished second and third both scoring 79 points.

Grant Community, with top 10 finishes from Justin Splitt (2nd) and Colton Romig (8th) won the Boys conference title (50 points) ahead of Grayslake Central (62 points) and Lakes Community (80 points). Antioch’s Charlie Smith ran 15:36 for the win 39 seconds ahead of Splitt.

 

Chicago Catholic League

Loyola Academy placed five runners in the top 10 led by individual champion Spencer Werner to win the league title scoring only 27 points. 2A #4 St. Ignatius (49 points) and 2A #3 Marmion Academy (69 points) followed. Werner’s winning time of 15:11 on the Lewis University course was seven seconds ahead of St. Ignatius Prep’s Jacob Flynn.

The Ramblers were also paced by finishes from Billy Delaney (3rd), Michael Solmos (6th), Jack Garrigus (7th), and Alexander Owens (10th). Their top five split off Werner was only 28 seconds. St. Ignatius placed five runners in the top 16 with a 43 second split.

 

Girls Catholic Athletic Conference

It came down to a sixth-runner tiebreak to decide a conference team winner. 2A #5 St. Ignatius Prep and Loyola Academy both scored 45 points. St. Ignatius was awarded the team title as they had 6 runners in the top 23. Loyola had 6 runners place in the top 34. 2A #11 Fenwick scored 56 points to finish third.

Loyola Academy freshman Ellie Grammas ran 18:03 for the individual win ahead of the St. Ignatius pack of Rhiannon O’Keefe, Kristina Dalton, and Lexi Affolter. O’Keefe was timed at 18:17.

 

Big 12 Championships

The first of two meets on this day at Detweiller Park in Peoria resulted with a couple of surprises. Normal West ran their best team race of the year so far this fall scoring 55 points to claim the Boys Conference title. 2A #10 Bloomington was a close second (59 points) followed by 2A #22 Peoria Notre Dame (80 points). All-state runner Charlie Wetzel cruised to the race win for Normal West (15:16.7) as he was ahead of Luke Manolakes of Centennial by 18 seconds. West had a tight pack behind Wetzel as they placed their next four runners between 11th and 16th with only a 10 second split on the group.

2A #15 Peoria Notre Dame placed four of their runners in the top 10 as they claimed the Girls conference title with 43 points. Normal Community (55 points), 2A #14 Urbana (85 points), and 2A #20 Bloomington (86 points) followed.

Notre Dame was led by freshman Maria Stedwell (3rd) with Eileen Zopel (5th), Irene Ehrhart (8th), Teagan Cover (10th), and Maci Cave (17th) following. Urbana’s Olivia Rosenstein was in control of the individual race as she ran 17:31 winning by 34 seconds ahead of Normal Community’s Olivia Hartke.

 

Metro Suburban Conference

Lianna Surtz ran 17:05 to win the Blue Division race and helped 1A #7 Rosary win the division title (48 points) ahead of 1A #8 IC Catholic Prep (67 points), 1A #24 Aurora Central Catholic (70 points) and Wheaton St. Francis (85 points. Carly Manchester of IC Catholic Prep and Isabela Orosco of Aurora Central Catholic finished second and third. Both were timed at 18:28.

Westmont scored 55 points to win the Red Division team title ahead of Bishop McNamara (71 points) and Timothy Christian (73 points). Timothy Christian’s Hope Clark ran 18:59 to win the individual race.

2A #12 Wheaton St. Francis swept the first three places to help them win the Boys Blue Division title with 24 points. Aurora Central Catholic (55 points) finished second. Dan Weizeorick ran 15:44 for the division championship ahead of teammates Chris Covone and Luke Orwig.

Chicago Christian scored 30 points to win the Red Division team title ahead of Ridgewood (54 points) and Westmont (65 points). Bishop McNamara’s Chase Provost ran 15:54 for the divisional win.

 

 

East Suburban Catholic Conference

Benet Academy swept both team titles in this conference meet at Mt. Prospect’s Melas Park. The Girls team, ranked #1 in Class 2A, placed all seven of their runners between fourth and tenth to win the team title (25 points) ahead of Marist and St. Viator who finished second and third both scoring 80 points. The top five split between Benet’s first runner Joy Jackson (4th) and fifth runner Amelia Parisi (8th) was 49 seconds. Marian Central Catholic’s Siobhan Stoll won a tactical individual race running 18:05 for the conference title. Katie Castelli of St. Viator (18:16) and Colette Kinsella of Nazareth Academy (18:17) were a close second and third followed by Benet’s Jackson (18:18).

2A #8 Benet Academy edged Marist 42-50 for the Boys team title behind Sean Donnelly’s fourth-place finish. The Redwings split on five runners from Donnelly to Sage Osborne (14th) was 58 seconds. Marist’s Thomas Leonard pulled away from the pack in the final mile to run 15:15 claiming the individual conference title. Marian Central Catholic’s Peter Walsdorf (15:42) and Ryan Jones (15:49) finished second and third.

 

Cahokia Conference

Freeburg repeated as the Boys conference champion, but it was close. The Midgets placed five runners in the top 16 while Columbia had four runners in the top 10 with their fifth runner 18th. 1A #20 Freeburg won the title 45-46 led by top 10 finishes from Cade Smith (3rd), Evan Wilkerson (5th), and McKallen Smith (6th). Trenton Wesclin’s Justin Mumford ran 16:08 to win the conference title by 29 seconds ahead of Ethan Sturm of Columbia (16:37).

1A #18 Freeburg cruised to the Girls conference crown (27 points) ahead of Breese Central (59 points) and Columbia (60 points). Breanna Chandler led Freeburg with the individual win (19:25) ahead of Breese Central’s Kristen Ess by 21 seconds.

 

Kishwaukee River Conference

Woodstock, led by the second-place finish from Jack Hansen, placed five runners in the top 10 to win the Boys team crown with 32 points. Marengo scored 54 points to finish second. Marengo’s Luke Chaffin ran 16:41 to win the individual race 35 seconds ahead of Hansen.

Richmond-Burton edged Woodstock North 36-42 for the Girls Conference team title. Woodstock’s Shannon Koscinski (20:54) was the individual Girls winner.

 

South Suburban-Blue Conference

Matt Lovrich ran 16:12 for the individual win to lead Bremen to the conference title with 41 points. Lemont (51 points) and Thornton Fractional North (61 points) finished second and third. Oak Forest’s Mike Reif finished second (16:24) with Bremen’s Zach Casper placing third (16:55).

2A #18 Lemont, led by the individual win from Kaylie Politza, placed 5 runners in the top 7 to win the divisional title with 23 points. Oak Forest (37 points) finished second. Politza ran 18:42 to win by over a minute ahead of Oak Forest’s Allison Ramsey and Mia Nutile. This was the second race of the season for Politza who missed most of the season due to injury.

 

South Suburban-Red Conference

Evan Jamrozy and Jackson Sima finished in the top four to help Shepard win the divisional title with 45 points. Reavis (67 points) and HL Richards (71 points) finished second and third. Jamrozy ran 15:29 for the win with Jadon Pirkl of Oak Lawn second (15:45).

Reavis placed 5 runners in the top 13 to win the Girls team title with 33 points. They finished ahead of Oak Lawn (66 points) and Eisenhower (84 points). Argo’s Abby Lopez dominated the field running 18:22 winning the race by almost two minutes.

 

Southland Athletic Conference

Thornwood and Bloom Township both scored 56 points with Thornwood winning the Boys title on a sixth-runner tiebreak. Bloom’s Logan Wetzel ran 16:26 for the win ahead of Thornwood’s Aaron Terrell (17:03).

Thornton scored 26 points to win the Girls team title ahead of Bloom Township (52 points). D’Ziya Bright of Thornton ran 20:30 for the individual win.

 

Patriot Invitational @ Detweiller Park

This was the big 1A race of the weekend with teams tuning up for the state series on the state meet course.

#2 Monticello, heled by the 6-7 finish from Luke Sokolowski and Josh Bayshore, placed five runners in the top 21 to win the team title with 55 points. #8 Elmwood-Brimfield (109 points), #11 Father McGivney (215 points), #15 St. Joseph-Ogden (217 points), and #24 Arthur-Lovington (236 points) rounded out the top five. Monticello’s split on their top five runners was only 29 seconds.

In a sprint to the finish, Athens’ Noah McIntyre ran 15:04 to edge Illinois Valley Central’s Elias Bergman (15:06) for the win. Layton Hall of Arthur-Lovington ran 15:23 to finish third.

#2 Monticello made a statement in the Girls race as they placed 4 runners in the top 10 winning the title with only 31 points. #3 Tolono Unity was second (52 points) led by Evelyn Atkins’ eighth-place finish. #9 St. Joseph-Ogden (70 points), #19 Elmwood-Brimfield (164 points), and Illinois Valley Central (307 points) were also n the top five teams.

Mabry Bruhn of Monticello continued her strong freshman season running 17:29 for the win. Knoxville’s Breena Shreeves was next (17:57) followed by Anne Gregory of Monmouth United (18:04), and Rachel Koon of Monticello (18:06).

 

Eureka XC Classic

1A #6 Eureka placed five runners in the top nine, led by the 1-2 finish from Anna Perry and Alexi Fogo, to score 23 points to win the Girls team title. El Paso-Gridley scored 43 points to finish second. Perry’s time of 17:18 on the 2.9-mile Lower Lake Park Course was 27 seconds faster than her teammate Fogo.

1A #13 El Paso-Gridley placed four runners in the first 10 to help them win the Boys title (43 points) ahead of 1A #12 Deer Creek Mackinaw (52 points) and 1A #17 Eureka (69 points). Dee-Mack’s Colby Johnson ran 15:25 to capture the individual win. Eureka’s Jack Cook (15:32) and El Paso-Gridley’s Asa Smith (15:57) finished second and third.

 

Effingham St. Anthony XC Classic

Class 1A top ranked Stanford Olympia tuned up for the upcoming state series taking five of the first six places to win the Boys team title with only 17 points. Mattoon scored 80 points to finish second. Olympia’s Charlie Kistner was the individual winner (15:06) on the 3-mile course followed by teammates Jon Neville (2nd) and Logan Wheeler (3rd). Dylan Bennet (5th) and Owen Dare (6th) were the team’s fourth and fifth runners. The Spartans had a 57 second split on their top five runners.

Mt. Zion edged St. Thomas More 52-53 for the Girls team title. Olympia’s Savanah Beavers ran 18:01 for the win ahead of second-place Jasmyn Dittamore of Cumberland (18:42).

 

Illinois Central Eight Conference / Independents Classic

The two through four finish from Max Elder, Andrew Brockmeier, and Dan Gomez helped 1A #6 Northridge Prep to a 31-34 meet win ahead of 1A #9 Herscher. Drew Rogers of Herscher was 44 seconds ahead of the Northridge Prep pack and ran 16:16 for 5-kilometers for the individual win.

Herscher edged Willows Academy 52-53 for the Girls Meet win. Herscher’s Molly Raymond ran 19:48 to win by 55 seconds ahead of Seneca’s Audrey Jenkins.

 

FRIDAY

 

Mid-Illini Conference

Morton’s Sam Lange has showed this season that he is the Class 2A runner to beat when we get to state in November. Lange was again on the Detweiller Park course for the third time this fall, and he won in convincing fashion. His time of 14:46.5 was a personal best as he won by almost 30 seconds ahead of Metamora’s Adam Gilbreath-Glaub (15:14) and Ian O’Laughlin (15:20).

Lange’s win helped 2A #14 Morton win the team title 44-49 ahead of 2A #5 Metamora. Pekin scored 60 points to finish third ahead of #17 Limestone (83 points). The Potters placed their four other runners behind Lange in the top 14 with Cade Zobrist finishing 6th leading the pack with only a 25 second split on the group. Metamora placed 5 in the top 25 with a 50 second split on their top four runners.

Emma Skinner of Morton will be a runner to watch in the 2A State race as she continues to run fast times. Skinner’s winning time on the state course was 17:05 some 50 seconds ahead of second-place Saniya Mathew of Dunlap (17:55). Canton’s Eleanor Fournier finished third (18:24).

2A #9 Dunlap placed 5 runners in the top 12 to win their eighth conference title in a row scoring 39 points. Pekin (50 points), 2A #24 Washington (74 points), and 2A #25 Morton (92 points) finished second through fourth.

 

THURSDAY

 

Black Diamond Conference

Hamilton County placed 5 runners in the top 9 to win the Boys title with 24 points. Vienna finished second (56 points). Hamilton County’s Theron Smith ran 16:44 for the conference win.

Goreville edged Hamilton County 27-30 for the Girls conference championship. Maddie Karcher of Hamilton County ran 19:15 for the win ahead of Kiara Miller of Goreville by almost two minutes.

 

Central Illinois Conference

Ian Hale and Aidan Shanks finished 1-2 to help Clinton win the Boys conference title with 31 points. St. Teresa scored 54 points to finish second. Hale’s winning time of 16:59 was 12 seconds faster than teammate Shanks.

Shelbyville edged St. Teresa 33-42 to win the Girls team title. Shelbyville’s Gabrielle Spain was the individual winner timed at 18:46. Payne Turney of Clinton (19:06) and Ailey Mitchell of Shelbyville (19:36) finished second and third.

 

Independent School League @ Washington Park, Chicago

2A #3 Latin School looked strong in the Girls race taking five of the first six places to score 18 points for the league championships. Ava Parekh led the Romans with the individual win (17:35) followed by teammate Marianne Mihas (18:30). Chicago University’s Amanda O’Donnell broke up the Latin School pack finishing third right with Mihas.

The Boys race was extremely close as 1A #7 Latin School edged 1A #6 Northridge Prep 37-40 for the league title. 1A #23 Chicago University finished third (57 points). Latin School placed 5 runners in the top 11 paced by Ryan Hardiman’s third-place finish. The team’s top five split was 61 seconds. Northridge placed 5 in the top 14 led by the fifth-place finish from Andrew Brockmeier. Their top five team split was 48 seconds. U-High took the top two places as Nicky Edwards-Levin ran 15:59 for the win ahead of teammate Luke Sikora (16:08).

 

Mississippi Valley Conference

2A #10 Highland placed 5 runners in the top 10 to win the Girls team title with 35 points. Mascoutah (64 points) and Triad (67 points) finished second and third.

Waterloo’s Rachel Patterson ran 18:58 for the win 20 seconds ahead of second-place Chloe Latour of Mascoutah (19:18) and Julia Loeh of Highland (19:25 who finished third.

2A #21 Mascoutah placed 5 runners in the top 15 with only a 27 second split to win the Boys team title ahead of 2A #16 Waterloo (64 points) and 2A #9 Triad (66 points). Avery Cozzi and Kristian Knecht led Mascoutah with a 5-6 finish. Eli Ward of Waterloo ran 15:36 to capture the individual race 18 seconds ahead of teammate Jackson McCallister.

 

South Seven Conference

2A #18 Centralia placed 5 runners in the top 13 to win the Boys team title with 27 points. Marion scored 48 points to finish second. Brooks Harlan of Centralia ran 15:12 on the 2.96-milecourse for the win ahead of Carbondale’s Tucker Poshard.

Carbondale scored 30 points to wins the Girls team title with 5 runners in the top 12. Marion (65 points) and Belleville Althoff (66 points) were second and third. Carbondale’s Madeline Prideaux ran 18:50 for the win ahead of Mt. Vernon’s Summer Chelf (18:56).

 

Southern Illinois River to River Conference

Benton made it a clean sweep winning both team titles in the Ohio Division of the conference. 1A #10 Benton placed 5 runners in the top 7 to win the team title 17-40 over Herrin. Reece Johnson led Benton with the individual win running 16:12. 1A #12 Benton won the Girls title with 19 points as Amelia McLain ran 18:40 for the individual title.

1A #10 DuQuoin was impressive in the Mississippi Division as they placed 5 runners in the top 7 including the top 3 places to score 19 points. Pinckneyville scored 53 points to finish second. DuQuoin’s Gabrielle Alongi paced her team as she ran 19:25 to claim the individual title. She finished 20 seconds ahead of teammate Laura Heape.

Pinckneyville edged DuQuoin 37-46 for the Boys title. DuQuoin’s Landen Swiney ran 16:27 for the win 13 seconds ahead of Sparta’s Isaac Sinn.

 

Southwestern Conference

Edwardsville was without their #1 runner Jack Pifer. The Tigers still won the Boys team title (37 points) placing 5 runners in the top 11. Geordan Patrylak led Edwardsville with his third-place finish. O’Fallon finished second (46 points) sweeping the first two individual spots in the process. Nick Edwards ran 15:51 for the conference championship while teammate Christopher Wichlac ran 15:52 to finish second. Belleville East was third (73 points).

#22 O’Fallon put 4 runners in the top 5 and 5 in the top 10 to clam the Girls conference title with 24 points. Edwardsville (40 points) finished second. Riley Knoyle of Edwardsville was the individual conference champion running 18:07. Julia Monson was next leading the O’Fallon pack running 18:47. The Panthers had a 75 second split on their top five.

 

Western Big Six Conference

East Moline United won the Boys team title (42 points) placing 4 runners in the top 8. Moline finished second (75 points) with Geneseo scoring 82 points to finish third. Quincy’s Fiker Rosen ran 15:49 in his individual win 10 seconds ahead of Moline’s Tim Wolf and Jackson McClellan.

Moline edged Sterling 53-63 behind the 1-2 finish from Lylia Gomez and Emily Lopez. Gomez ran 18:56 for the win with Lopez running 19:20 finishing second.

 

WEDNESDAY

 

Chicago Public League Championships

 

Meet organizers made a smart move before teachers in the school district went on strike Thursday moving the meet from Saturday to Wednesday afternoon at Horner Park. Hopefully the strike or some kind of compromise is figured out so that these kids can run in regional competition on October 26.

#12 Jones Prep edged Lane Tech 26 to 33 for the Boys City title placing 4 runners in the top 5. Anthony Maida ran 15:23 to lead Jones with the individual title with Lane Tech’s Jack Burns finishing second in 15:40. A 10 second pack of Jones runners with Ryan DeSantis, Ian Bacon, and Aaron Hou followed. Jones Prep had a 63 second split on their top 5 runners in the top 13. Lane Tech ran a 37 second split on their top five runners as they had 5 runners in the top 10.

Sydney Partyka of Taft ran 18:02.8 to win the Girls City title. The senior finished 32 seconds ahead of second-place Daphne Murray of Whitney Young. Lane Tech placed all of their scorers between 9 and 14 with only a 10 second split to win the City team title with 59 points. Daniella Martinez led the Indians with a ninth-place finish. Whitney Young (69 points) and Payton Prep (91 points) finished second and third.

 

TUESDAY

 

Apollo Conference

2A #6 Mahomet-Seymour continues to come on strong. Their team placed 5 runners in the top 12 with a 69 second split to claim the conference title with 33 points. Mattoon scored 59 points to finish second. Taylorville’s Chris Cherry ran 15:54 for the individual win ahead of Mahomet-Seymour’s Kyle Nofziger and Joseph Scheele.

Mahomet-Seymour completed the sweep in a tight Girls race. The 2A #16 Bulldogs edged Mt. Zion 37-38 for the conference title. Elizabeth Sims ran 19:01 to win the individual race leading Mahomet. Mattoon’s Kylie Haacke ran 19:12 to finish second ahead of another Mahomet-Seymour runner Grace Leitz. Mt. Zion placed 5 runners in the top 13 with a 46 second split. Mahomet-Seymour put 5 in the top 12 with a 69 second split. Their slit from their second through fifth runners was 45 seconds.

 

Little Illini Conference

Tatum David of Richland County tuned up for the state series with another convincing win. David ran 17:26 on Robinson’s 2.96-mile course to win by almost two minutes. Marshall took the next four places led by the second place finish of Isabel Arthur (19:13). 1A #13 Marshall placed 5 in the top 10 to win the Girls title with 23 points with Richland County scored 51 points finishing second.

Gavin Kirby’s individual win in 15:39 helped Richland County win the Boys title with 35 points. Robinson, without their #1 runner Negus Bogard, finished second with 46 points.
