March came in like a lion so to speak a day early in the Illinois Track & Field world. In any other year, it would have been the beginning of March. But this was a leap year (2020) where February was extended that one extra day.

It is in March in the Illinois Track & Field world where we start to see the hype, we start to see the performances that give us an indication of what the season will look like.

The Boys Meet at Huntley on Friday quietly turned in some great performances. You can read about that meet here and watch the videos from that meet.

Here are highlights and performances that caught our eyes this past weekend.

A Series of 3200 Meter Run Races

The meet at Hononegah High School was not on the calendar for the Hersey High School Boys Track team in years past. The new facility north of Rockford will produce some great performances on their fast oval. It did on Saturday from Hersey’s Josh Methner.

We got an indication of what kind of shape the Foot Locker National Champion was in last week when he ran 2:37 for 1000-meters in flats at a small meet at Glenbrook South. Methner’s objective in Saturday’s race was to run a smooth 3200 Meter Run. He would have to do it himself. There would be no other runner in the field that would be able to touch him. Methner responded with a state leading time of 9:08.18 to lap the field and win the 3200 Meter Run by 45 seconds ahead of Rockford Auburn’s Peter Maculan.

The plan for Methner according to his coach Kevin Young was to get close to 9:10 in this race and get him ready for running the 5k at the Texas Distance Festival on March 14. Methner got a little excited running the first mile in 4:30. In the final eight laps he settled down to consistant 70 second 400-meters to get him to his finish time.

About 90 minutes later at the Olivet Nazarene HS Invitational in Bourbonnais, Brett Gardner of Lincoln-Way East and Jared Kreis of Lincoln-Way Central would step on to the fast oval in the Perry Recreation Center to run a 3200 Meter Run of their own. This would be the first race this season for Kreis. Gardner had two quality races under his belt having run 4:19 for 1600-meters and 9:17 for 3200-meters to weeks ago.

Expectations were high for some fast times between these two all-state athletes. They did not disappoint. The two runners pushed each other through this race lapping a quality field. They came in together side by side with Gardner grabbing the win (9:09.78) with the second fastest time in the state. Kreis was less than a second behind running an IL #3 9:10.52 time.

Also a race to take note was at Wheaton-Warrenville South on Friday Night. Wheaton-Warrenville South’s all-state cross country runner Ethan Seng put the state on notice that he could be a factor in the 3200 Meter Run by the time we get to the state meet in May. Seng ran a solo 9:38.43 (IL #11) on his home 178-meter track to win his race by 77 seconds.

Aly Negovetich of Grant Community was at Huntley on Friday evening to watch her school’s team compete in the Boys meet. She did get to see four of the top 15 times in the state turned in at that meet’s 3200 Meter Run led by the win from Minooka’s Vincent Van Eck. Perhaps that race gave her some inspiration as she stepped to the line Saturday morning to run the 3200 Meter Run in Huntley’s Girls Invitational. The Grant sophomore turned in the fastest 3200 Meter Run time in the state as she won the event running 10:49.99 winning by over a minute. Negovetich came back later in the meet to run 5:14.14 (IL #9) to win the 1600 Meter Run by nine seconds ahead of Alice Abbott of St. Charles East.

The Homewood-Flossmoor Girls Invitational held on Saturday is centered on some great sprint/hurdle performances. The best performance in this day might have come from the 3200 Meter Run. Josephine Welin of Oak Park-River Forest turned in a great solo effort running 10:54.99 (IL #2) lapping the field in winning by 49 seconds.

National Noteworthy

This does not Illinois athletes but does have a Midwest twist in here. It something that made history that has not happened before but as educated readers on this site, you should know what happened on February 28 at two meets on the East Coast of the United States in a span of approximately eight hours.

Rosin Willis of Stevens Point, Wisc. was in Boston to run in the Boston University’s Last Chance Meet that had pro and college runners competing in the 800 Meter Run. This high school sophomore won the second section of the event with a then national leading 2:03.05. Also in that section finished Sophia Gorriaran. The freshman from Moses Brown HS RI finished fourth in that section but still ran 2:03.98.

That evening at the Fast Track Last Chance Meet in the Ocean Breeze Center in Staten Island, Juliette Whittaker of Mt. de Sales MD, a high school sophomore, went out in a field similar to what Willis had to experience and won her section of the 800 Meter Run in an event winning time of 2:03.01.

Whittaker’s winning time is tops in the nation entering March as well as the third fastest indoor time ever by a Girls High School athlete. Willis performance was US #4 all-time. Gorriaran’s performance was US #7 all-time.

All of this happened in a span of last than eight hours when two sophomores and a freshman ran under 2:04 for 800-meters. The future is bright for American female middle distance running.
