2021 IHSA Class 3A Boys Sectional Highlights

3A Hoffman Estates Sectional – June 11

 

This meet was delayed on Friday afternoon due to high heat conditions in the Chicago area. WSC-Silver champion Glenbard West edged Wheaton-Warrenville South 94-90. York scored 80 points to finish third. Glenbard West’s Sean Hopkins qualified in four events winning two of them. Hopkins jumped 21-9.75 to win the Long Jump. The senior ran 10.94 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Hopkins finished second in the 200 Meter Dash behind race winner Reece Young of Wheaton-Warrenville South (22.30).

 

York ran a seasonal best of 7:52.69 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Glenbard West (7:55.23). Ethan Summer and Jeff Luka of York finished together in the 3200 Meter Run both timed at 9:35. Pierce Cousins of Glenbard West qualified on his team’s 4x8 relay. Cousins came back to run 4:24.33 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of York’s Mickey Vreeland (4:26.57). Tim Gale of Schaumburg cleared 14-7.5 to win the Pole Vault.

 

3A Batavia Sectional – June 10

 

Host Batavia scored 109 points to win this sectional and stamped themselves as one of the team favorites next Saturday. The Bulldogs qualified three of their four relays. They finished second in the 4x100m Relay (42.59) behind race winner St. Charles North (42.33). Batavia had the second fastest sectional qualifying time in winning with a 1:28.54 time. They had the third fastest time in the 4x400m Relay running 3:22.54 for the win.

 

St. Charles East, anchored by Luke Schildmeyer, ran 8:00.44 to win the 4x800m Relay just ahead of Barrington (8:00.66). Schildmeyer came back to run 4:18.96 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of his teammate Micah Wilson who was timed at 4:21.12. Wilson also won the 3200 Meter Run (9:20.93).

 

Jamarion Stubbs of Elgin Larkin ran 15.59 to win the 110 High Hurdles and 38.90 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles. Joshua Duncan of St. Charles also won two events running 10.84 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 22.19 to win the 200 Meter Dash by one hundredth of a second ahead of DeMarrea Davis of DeKalb.

 

Paolo Gennarelli of St. Charles North threw 166-9 to win the Discus. He came back to have a 52-11.75 mark to win the Shot Put. Aiden Gatz of Kaneland cleared a personal best of 15-0.25 to win the Pole Vault. Four other athletes qualified for state in that event. Jonah Fallon of Batavia ran 49.35 to win the 400 Meter Dash with JaMari Newell running 49.58 to finish second.

 

3A Berwyn-Cicero (Morton) Sectional – June 10

 

Marist scored 125 points to win this sectional. Nehemiah Ray of Brother Rice won the three sprint events. Ray ran 11.12 to win the 100 Meter Dash just ahead of Jonathan Mayhand of Oak Forest (11.14). The senior ran 51.02 to win the 400 Meter Dash and 22.34 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Marcus Kennedy of Brother Rice cleared 6-4 to win the High Jump. Joshua Harris of Marist was a double winner in the Shot put (44-11.25) and the Discus (137-3).

 

3A Bloomington Sectional – June 10

 

Some great performances occurred in this meet on Thursday night. Normal Community West scored 94 points to win the team title by just one point ahead of Edwardsville (93 points). Chatham-Glenwood scored 80 points to finish third. Brandon Battle won three individual events. His big race was in the 400 Meter Dash as he ran 46.60 (US #4) to win by almost five seconds. Battle also ran 10.95 to win the 100 Meter Dash and 21.70 to win the 200 Meter Dash. He was also scheduled to run the 4x100m Relay, but the team was disqualified due to a false start. Liam McGill of Bloomington cleared a state leading 16-6.75 to win the Pole Vault. Normal West swept the horizontal jumps with Jamari Myer winning the Long Jump (22-5.25) and Leslie Fisher jumping an IL #2 47-6.5 in winning the Triple Jump. Chatham-Glenwood ran 7:55.41 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of O’Fallon (8:00.21) and Edwardsville (8:00.87). Chatham-Glenwood also ran 3:25.50 to win the 4x400m Relay. Adepoju Arogundade of Chatham-Glenwood won both the 110 High Hurdles (15.50) and the 300 Meter Hurdles (39.76).

 

3A Glenview (Glenbrook South) Sectional – June 10

 

Glenbrook South followed up their league divisional championship with the sectional championship on their home track. The Titans scored 101 points for the win ahead of Loyola Academy (74 points), New Trier (57 points), and Evanston (56 points). Distance events stood in the spotlight in this meet. Hersey (8:03.62) edged Prospect (8:04.54) in the 4x800m Relay. Four runners went under 9:18 in the 3200m Run. All qualified led by the win from Loyola’s Spencer Werner (9:11.24). He finished ahead of New Trier’s Charlie Siebert (9:16.52) and Nick Falk (9:16.78) along with Stephen Barretto of Rolling Meadows (9:17.48). Werner came back to win the 1600 Meter Run (4:16.74) ahead of New Trier’s George Cahill (4:22.97) and Andrew Flynn (4:23.30).

 

Evanston’s Kalil Johnson of Evanston was a double winner in the hurdles. Johnson ran 14.31 to win the 110 High Hurdles ahead of Max Wilhelm of Deerfield (14.81) and Michael Campbell of Rolling Meadows (14.97). Johnson came back to run 38.61 to win the 300 Meter Hurdles with Nathan Shapiro of Glenbrook South finishing second (39.21) and Wilhelm in third (39.51). Evanston, with Johnson anchoring, ran 42.88 to win the 4x100m Relay. Ryan Faut of Glenbrook South had a 55-3.75 best in winning the Shot Put. Faut came back to throw161-9 in winning the Discus. Matt Cless of Evanston jumped 6-6.75 to win the High Jump. Jahari Scott of Lake Forest jumped 22-5.75 to win the Long Jump ahead of teammate Wyatt Horvat (22-4) and Glenbrook South’s Nathan Shapiro (22-4). Scott also ran 11.04 to win the 100 Meter Dash.

 

3A Grayslake (Central) Sectional – June 10

 

Grayslake Central won their own sectional with 77.5 points. Palatine (67 points) and Warren Township (63 points) finished second and third. Hunter Matuch of Vernon Hills had a monster mark of 61-3 to win the Shot Put by almost 10 feet ahead of Jhermari Mabry of Palatine. Matuch threw 180-9 to win the Discus.

 

Javerius McGuinn of Wauconda won both short sprint races. The senior ran a personal best of 10.67 to win the 100 Meter Dash. McGuinn came back to run 21.86 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Luke Wiley of Warren Township was by himself in the 3200 Meter Run. The junior ran 9:27.61 for the win by 28 seconds. There were three qualifiers in the 1600 Meter Run all under 4:20 led by the 4:13.95 win from Jacob Myers of Lake Zurich. Wiley ran 4:17.15 to finish second ahead of teammate Griffin Pasha (4:19.12).  Libertyville ran 7:59.39 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Grayslake Central and Warren Township who both ran 8:02.31.

 

3A Naperville (North Sectional – June 10

 

This was one of the top 3A sectionals of last week. Neuqua Valley scored 92 points to win the sectional championship ahead of Naperville North (81 points), Lockport (68 points), and Naperville Central (60 points). The distance events were dynamite. Sandburg ran a season’s best of 7:51.92 to win the 4x800m Relay with Neuqua Valley (7:56.50), Lyons Township (7:57.21), and Naperville Central (8:01.47) all qualifying to the state finals. Declan Tunney of Sandburg ran 9:23.95 to win the 3200 Meter Run. Four other runners qualified for state including Chase Burrell of Naperville North (9:25.78), Owen Hays of Lyons Township (9:27.64), Tim Neumann of Downers Grove South (9:27.74), and Gabe Ryan of Naperville North (9:28.58).

 

Four runners qualified for the 800 Meter Run led by list leader Daniel Watcke of Hinsdale Central who ran 1:55.67 for the win. Jocqael Thorpe of Lyons Township (1:56.62), Brett Wasick of Bolingbrook (1:56.74), and Julian Head of Naperville North (1:57.65) also qualified.

 

Nicolas Dovalovsky of Neuqua Valley pulled away in the final lap to win the 1600 Meter Run (4:13.25). Wil Kiley of Lockport ran a huge personal best of 4:18.30 to finish second. Tommy Paltzer of Naperville North (4:19.13), Brock Rice of Sandburg (4:22.13), Roy Llewellyn of Downers Grove North (4:23.07), and Arthur Graham of Naperville Central (4:23.33) all advanced to the state meet.

 

Max Mitchell of Neuqua Valley won the 400 Meter Dash (49.17) and the 200 Meter Dash (22.17) ahead of Andrew Li of Naperville North (22.54). Li earlier in the meet ran 10.96 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Mitchell anchored Neuqua Valley’s team that ran 42.69 to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of Naperville North (42.84) and Lockport (42.99). the order changed in the 4x200m Relay with Lockport winning (1:29.44) ahead of Neuqua Valley (1:29.58), and Naperville North (1:29.84). Hinsdale Central, anchored by Watcke, ran 3:21.63, to win the 4x400m Relay ahead of Neuqua Valley (3:24.45). Gabe Czako of Lockport ran a persona best of 14.36 to win the 110 High Hurdles with Jalen Johnson of Metea Valley a close second (14.42). Johnson had the edge in winning the 300 Meter Hurdles (38.93) with Czako finishing second (39.52). Henry Jonas of Hinsdale Central jumped 22-3.75 to win the Long Jump. Justin Gnade jumped a season’s best of 44-4.75 to win the Triple Jump.

 

3A Rock Island Sectional – June 10

 

Oswego claimed the sectional team title with 88 points. Waubonsie Valley (75.5 points) and Yorkville (68 points) finished second and third. Yorkville’s Kyle Clabough was a double winner in the weight events. Clabough had a 63-11.75 best to win the Shot Put by over 10 feet. Clabough came back to throw 160-8 to win the Discus with Sam Mika of Waubonsie Valley throwing a personal best of 159-10 to finish second.

 

Oswego’s Caleb Wright jumped 45-4 to win the Triple Jump and 21-9 to win the Long Jump. Oswego took the top two spots in the Pole Vault as Christian Sobecki cleared 15-0.25 to win the event with teammate Alex Aagesen clearing 13-7.5 to finish second.

 

Plainfield North ran 42.73 to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of Rock Island (42.96). Plainfield South ran under 1:30 with a 1:29.89 time in winning the 4x200m Relay just ahead of Plainfield East (1:30.37). Plainfield South (3:22.53), Plainfield North (3:23.93), and Moline (3:25.55) led the way in the 4x400m Relay.

 

Ryan Maseman of Plainfield North ran the top sectional time in the state (1:54.24) in the 800 Meter Run winning ahead of Ivan Westcott of Yorkville (1:54.98), Logan Veloz of East Moline (1:55.67), and Hunter Reyes of Yorkville (1:57.03). Westcott came back to run 4:20.10 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Balin Doud of Oswego (4:22.02) and Alexander Das of Oswego East (4:23.68). Yorkville’s Austin Popplewell ran 9:22.29 to win the 3200 Meter Run.

 

Niko Shultz of Plainfield South ran a personal best of 49.85 to win the 400 Meter Dash. Jettason Rose of Quincy was a double sprint winner running 10.91 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Waubonsie Valley’s Jamir Harris (11.00). Rose came back to run 22.03 to win the 200 Meter Dash. Sean Kirkwood of Waubonsie Valley ran 15.06 to win the 100 High Hurdles ahead of teammate Alex Wiley (15.13) and Saiheed Jah of Moline (15.15). Jah came back to run the 300 Meter Hurdles (39.530 ahead of Jalyn Givan of Plainfield North (40.00) and Kirkwood (40.01).

 

3A Flossmoor (Homewood-F.) Sectional – June 9

 

Two of the top team powers in the state faced off in the big faceoff of the 3A sectionals. Minooka dominated the team competition scoring 147 points for the win. Homewood-Flossmoor (86 points) and Lincoln-Way East (71 points) finished second and third. Marshall Ellis of Homewood-Flossmoor ran a personal best of 10.71 to win the 100 Meter Dash ahead of Tyler Colwell of Minooka (10.74) and Tylar Mack of TF South (10.94). Colwell came back to run a sectional leading time of 21.61 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Mack (21.73) and Ellis (21.78).

 

Homewood-Flossmoor ran 41.40 to in the 4x100m Relay for the win with Minooka placing second (41.79). Homewood-Flossmoor again won the 4x200m Relay (1:28.17) with Minooka again finishing second. Minooka came back to run 3:27.29 to win the 4x400m Relay.

 

Minooka started the meet off running the fastest time in the state in winning the 4x800m Relay (7:49.79). Minooka’s Vincent Van Eck ran 1:56.61 to win the 800 Meter Run with Aaron Terrell of Thornwood (1:57.32) and Adam Shaw of Minooka (1:57.69) also qualifying. Marcellus Mines of Joliet West lowered his personal best down to 4:18.76 to win the 1600 Meter Run ahead of Minooka’s Zachary Balzer (4:20.38).

 

3A Huntley Sectional – June 9

 

Huntley easily won their sectional with 107 points. Rockford East led the pack scoring 67 points. The 100 Meter Dash was the closest race of the night as the top three finishers were within one hundredth of a second of each other. Marquez Gray of Rockford East and Evan Gronewold of Huntley could not be separated after a review of the photo. Both tied for the win in 10.99. Paul Kerber of Huntley finished third (11.00). Kerber came back to run 22.60 to win the 200 Meter Dash ahead of Gray (22.77). Gronewold ran a personal best of 49.02 to win the 400 Meter Dash with Rockford East’s Makarious Luster finishing second (49.92). Josh Delgado of Grant ran 1:55.97 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Isai Morales of Hampshire (1:57.61). A’Tiq Muhammad of Rockford Guilford jumped 23-2.25 to win the Long Jump.

 

3A Chicago (Lane Tech) Sectional – June 9

 

Oak Park-River Forest easily won this sectional with 157 points. Niles West (73 points) and Maine South (71 points) finished second and third. The Huskies won three of the four relays contested in this meet. Oak Park-River Forest ran 42.01 to win the 4x100m Relay winning by more than a second. It was more of the same in the 4x200m Relay with OPRF running 1:29.75 for the win with Niles West second (1:31.32). Oak Park also ran 7:57.97 to win the 4x800m Relay ahead of Lane Tech (8:01.43). Lane Tech won the final event of the meet running 3:25.37 ahead of Oak Park (3:28.49).

 

Ebaad Siddiqui of Niles West ran 50.22 to win the 400 Meter Dash just five hundredth of a second ahead of Lane Tech’s Juan Manaog (50.27). Andy Niser of Jones Prep ran 9:31.21 to win the 3200 Meter Run and 4:24.30 to win the 1600 Meter Run with Matt Cull of Maine South finishing second (4:24.63).

 

Malcom Bevans of St. Ignatius Prep was a double winner with a 23-2.75 best to win the Long Jump. He came back to jump 45-8 in winning the Triple Jump.
