2021 IHSA Class 2A Boys State Meet Preview

By Michael Newman

Eureka has the talent and number of athletes to win the Class 2A team championship on Friday. East. St. Louis-Senior, Mascoutah, and Burlington Central are teams that could also leave O’Brien Field with the top prize.

Devonte Ford of East St. Louis-Senior could win three events on Friday. The race to watch is the 300 Meter Hurdles where Ford could surpass the 300 Meter Hurdles State Meet Record. CJ Shoaf of Mahomet-Seymour will challenge Ford in the 110 High, 300 Intermediates, and the 200 Meter Dash. Shoaf will also be the huge favorite in the High Jump where he should go past 7-0 again.

The distance events in the middle of this three-day meet should be lights out. Drew Rogers of Herscher will be the huge favorite in the 3200 Meter Run with Chris Cherry of Taylorville his chief competition. The 1600 Meter Run should be wild with Rogers, Cherry, Gavin Genisio of Benton, and Brooks Harlan of Centralia some of the runners to watch in this talented but loaded race.

Here is a look at each of the Class 2A events and some of the teams to watch on Friday.

Running Events

4x800m Relay

IHSA State Meet Record – 7:37.36 – Orland Park (Sandburg) - 2016

IHSA State Meet Record (4x880y) – 7:38.0 – Harvey Thornton - 1976

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 7:46.38 – Lansing (Illiana Christian) - 2014

2021 2A Best – 8:08.21 - Morton

2021 2A Sectional Best – 8:08.21 – Morton

Preview – The 2A Meet will have its share of great distance events that starts with this one. The top 10 teams in Class 2A are separated by 12 seconds. One of those teams, Mascoutah, has a seasonal best of 8:14.13. They will most likely will be in the first section of this event where they could set the standard for the section. We saw that in the 3A Girls meet from Naperville North last Saturday.

Morton, Olympia, and Mahomet-Seymour are at the top of their class after the 1-2-3 finish at the Metamora Sectional. Burlington Central has been successful in this event at state in recent years. They will not sneak up on anyone this Friday. Teams like Lincoln, St. Viator, Sycamore, and Rochester are in that bubble of within 12 seconds. They should be a factor in this race. Rockford Christian could be a surprise in the first section of this event.

4x100m Relay

IHSA State Meet Record – 40.86 – Crete-Monee - 2019

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 41.12 – Cahokia - 2015

2021 2A Best – 42.70 - Urbana

2021 2A Sectional Best – 42.70 – Urbana

Preview – Blink your eyes at the end of the 4x100m Relay on Friday and you might miss the first five teams crossing the line. Urbana is no surprise being the top ranked team in this event with Daniel Mboyo and Jeremiah Hamilton leading that quartet. Mascoutah and East St. Louis-Senior were within 27 hundredth of a second of each other in their sectional race. Each team will be ready for the challenge. Eastside peaks at the right time. Don’t be surprised if they win this race.

Kankakee has been running strong with Quaevon Autman leading them. Rockford Christian knows how to get the baton around the track. The Royal Lions are technically strong and will be also in the mix for the win. All these teams are running at their best at the right time. A time of under 42.5 might be necessary to win this event.

3200 Meter Run

IHSA State Meet Record – 8:42.89 – Donald Sage, Elmhurst (York) - 2000

IHSA State Meet Record (2-Mile) – 8:42.6 – Craig Virgin, Lebanon - 1973

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 9:08.44 – Riley McInerney, Charleston - 2013

2021 2A Best – 8:57.78 – Drew Rogers (JR), Herscher

2021 2A Sectional Best – 9:13.30 – Drew Rogers (JR), Herscher

Preview – The dynamics changed in this race when Wilson Georges opted for the 800/1600 double and Gavin Genisio scratched out of this event to focus on the 1600. All eyes in this race will be on Drew Rogers. The junior has been lights out in this race having run under 9:15 both indoors and outdoors six times this season. He could grab the Class 2A record set 8 years ago. He has been in some tactical races this spring. He has the finish that puts him over the top. That might be necessary on a hot afternoon in Charleston on Friday. He is also coming back in the 1600 Meter Run.

One of those tactical races came when Rogers had to outkick Chris Cherry of Taylorville at the Shelby Open at the end of May. I would not count out Cherry in this race. He has run under 9:20 and does have a finish kick to match that of Rogers.

Four other runners in this race have run under 9:24 including Alex Partlow of Carbondale, Peter Walsdorf of Marian Central Catholic, Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda, and Ian O’Laughlin of Metamora. All  these runners could run under 9:20 and snatch one of the top three spots. Charlie Kistner of Olympia, Yusuf Baig of Bloomington Central, and Tucker Poshard of Carbondale are some of the other runners to watch in this race.

110 Meter Hurdles

IHSA State Meet Record – 13.79 – Travis Anderson, Edwardsville – 2016

IHSA State Meet Record – 13.79 – AJ Harris, Wheaton (North) - 2012

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 13.93 – Bret Dannis, Peru (St. Bede) - 2017

2021 2A Best – 14.15 – CJ Shoaf (SR), Mahomet (M.-Seymour)

2021 2A Sectional Best – 14.24 – Devonte Ford (SR), East St. Louis (Senior)

Preview – This will be one of the most anticipated races of Friday. CJ Shoaf has a 14.15 seasonal best. Devonte Ford of East St. Louis-Senior has been just one hundredth of a second behind Shoaf. This is a toss-up on who will win. Both runners are on fire. Both should go under 14-seconds threatening the Class 2A State Meet Record of 13.93.

Kevyere Mack of Peoria Richwoods ran 14.52 at Geneseo and could be the surprise in this field. Alec Sledge of Mt. Vernon is coming on strong having run 14.54 last week at Tolono Unity. Tyler Carter of Sycamore and Townsend Barton of Carterville both have the wheels to step into the top four in this event.

100 Meter Dash

IHSA State Meet Record – 10.31 – Marcellus Moore, Plainfield (North) - 2018

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 10.53 – Josh Eiker, Galesburg - 2015

2021 2A Best – 10.71 – Kyle Burgoni (SR), Tolono (Unity)

2021 2A Sectional Best – 10.71 – Kyle Burgoni (SR), Tolono (Unity)

PreviewKyle Burgoni comes into Friday’s race with the fastest time in Class 2A. The senior is undefeated this season at this distance. I just don’t see that changing in the Class 2A finals. One runner that I could see challenge is Michael Marrs of Sandwich. The senior has been near the top of the list all season. Marrs is one of four runners under 11 seconds in sectionals. Christian Keyhea of Mt. Zion ran 10.92 during the season and will be a threat in the front. Jackson Gerard of St. Francis had his time drop in the past couple of weeks. I would not dismiss him in the final section.

CJ Edison of Triad, Jacob Tackett of Monticello, Stephen Brown of Fenwick, Tierre Butler of Lanphier, and Don Tay Thompson of Freeport are expected to be in the final section. Quaevon Autman of Kankakee did not make the final section but has a 10.97 best. I would not count him out in an all-state position.

800 Meter Run

IHSA State Meet Record – 1:49.71 – Jason Van Swol, New Lenox (Lincoln-Way) - 1998

IHSA State Meet Record (880y) – 1:48.9 – Dave Ayoub, Peoria - 1977

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 1:51.48 – JD Lafayette, Normal University - 2014

2021 2A Best – 1:55.91 – Brock Drengenberg (SR), Dixon

2021 2A Sectional Best – 1:55.91 – Brock Drengenberg (SR), Dixon

Preview – I am really anticipating this race. Brock Drengenberg has run in this event only three times this spring. Two of those races are under 1:57 including the 1:55.91 that he ran last week. Wilson Georges of Limestone is in the same boat as Drengenberg running this race only three times. All those races are under 1:57 with his best of 1:56.12 at Bloomington on May 12. Nicky Edwards-Levin of Chicago University has a 1:56.76 best. His sectional time of 1:57.20 was run solo as he won by 10 seconds. Any of these three runners could win this race. The winner may need to clock a time in the 1:54 range to cross the line. Anticipation and fascination of this race at its best.

Jordan Eddy of Mascoutah and Fenwick’s Lee O’Bryan and Grayden Rill are more than a second behind the front group but could be challenging for one of those top three finishes. Kamil Kotarski of Elmwood Park continues to improve and could be the surprise in this race. Keep an eye also on Stephen Thomas of Rockford Christian and Kody Danko of Streator in this event.

4x200m Relay

IHSA State Meet Record – 1:25.83 – Cahokia - 2015

IHSA State Meet Record (4x220y) – 1:25.7 – East St. Louis-Senior - 1975

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 1:25.83 – Cahokia - 2015

2021 2A Best – 1:30.18 - Mascoutah

2021 2A Sectional Best – 1:30.18 – Mascoutah

Preview – Three of the team big guns are in this event with Mascoutah at 1:30.18 and Urbana and East St. Louis-Senior within a half a second. I think one of these three teams win this event with no bobbles.

Rockford Christian has been one of the top teams in this relay and should also be in the mix for the win. Chicago King is a surprise team in the final section and could challenge Peoria Notre Dame for a top five finish. Kankakee, Mt. Zion, and Sandwich all have their star runners anchoring, Do not count them out finishing in the top five.

400 Meter Dash

IHSA State Meet Record – 46.24 – Kahmari Montgomery, Plainfield (Central) – 2015

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 47.31 – Garret Payne, Glen Ellyn (Glenbard South) - 2011

2021 2A Best – 49.07 – Micah Senior (SR), Eureka

2021 2A Sectional Best – 49.07 – Micah Senior (SR), Eureka

Preview – Eureka could get a 1-2 team sweep in this event. Micah Senior and Aden Sears are within a tenth of a second of each other with Senior at 49.07. Bryson Wilson of Marion and Zac Schmidt of Burlington Central are close to three quarters of a second behind the two Eureka runners. Both have the talent to challenge for the win.

There is another drop of half a second before the next group of runners. Jackson Gilbert of Urbana, Timothy Cross of East St. Louis-Senior, Garrett Slack of Lincoln, and Cade Ward of Metamora all are capable of finishing in the first five places.

300 Meter Hurdles

IHSA State Meet Record – 36.53 – Deion McShane, Freeport - 2017

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 36.53 – Deion McShane, Freeport - 2017

2021 2A Best – 37.31 – Devonte Ford (SR), East St. Louis (Senior)

2021 2A Sectional Best – 37.31 – Devonte Ford (SR), East St. Louis (Senior)

Preview – There is the chance that Devonte Ford could go under 37 seconds in Friday’s final. The chance is there that Ford gets close or breaks the state meet record that Deion McShane set in 2017. Ford has run under 38 seconds in his last two meets in this event. Make it three on Friday and hold your breath if he threatens that record.

CJ Shoaf of Mahomet-Seymour is Ford’s closest competition more than a second behind. Kevyere Mack of Peoria Richwoods, Tyler Carter of Sycamore, and Townsend Barton of Carterville all ran personal bests in last week’s sectionals. They could be a surprise in the front in this race. Mitchell Danner of Eureka and Matthew Marcum of Rock Falls are some of the other runners to watch in this race.

1600 Meter Run

IHSA State Meet Record – 4:05.17 – Jeff Thode, Hoffman Estates (Conant) - 2009

IHSA State Meet Record (1-Mile) – 4:07.1 – Andy Isla-Rubert, Hillside (Proviso West) - 1970

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 4:14.28 – Jake Gillum, Metamora - 2017

2021 2A Best – 4:13.93 – Gavin Genisio (FR), Benton

2021 2A Sectional Best – 4:19.73 – Chris Cherry (SR), Taylorville

Preview – The final of the 2A distance races could be the best of the four. Drew Rogers of Herscher has only run 4:15.80 for 1600-meters outdoors this season. The 4:08.20 for the 1 Mile Run at Festival of Miles two weeks ago shows that he is ready for a fast time in this race even though he will be doubling back from the 3200. The phenom freshman from Benton Gavin Genisio has a 4:13.93 2A leading time in the event. This is his only race in Charleston. It is going to be fun to see him challenge for the win.

Eight runners this spring in Class 2A have run under 4:20. Brooks Harlan of Centralia finished second behind Genisio’s PR race and could be a factor in the front. Chris Cherry of Taylorville is doubling back in the 3200 Meter Run and has a killer kick to win if this race becomes tactical. Brock Dregenberg and Cadyn Grafton are doubling back and will also play factors in this race. Alex Partlow of Carbondale is another runner to keep an eye on. Nicky Edwards-Levin of Chicago University most likely will be in the first section of this event. Edwards-Levin has a 4:22 best that could run under 4:20 if he is in the first section.

200 Meter Dash

IHSA State Meet Record – 20.89 – Anthony Moorman, Roselle (Lake Park) - 1997

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 21.20 – Josh Eiker, Galesburg – 2015

2021 2A Best – 21.58 – Jeremiah Hamilton (SR), Urbana

2021 2A Sectional Best – 21.58 – Jeremiah Hamilton (SR), Urbana

Preview – This is the third event that Devonte Ford of East St. Louis-Senior and CJ Shoaf of Mahomet-Seymour will be in the same event in this meet. Most likely the two athletes will be in different sections. The spotlight should be on Jeremiah Hamilton and Kyle Burgoni of Tolono Unity in the final section. The two runners faced off in their sectional race with Hamilton winning by 15 hundredth of a second. The two will challenge for the win again on Friday. Which runner will get the lean across the line first?

Jalen Burton of Carmel Catholic had a big sectional race at Richmond-Burton and could be the surprise in this event. We mentioned Ford who is seeded #5 in this event. Michael Marrs of Sandwich will factor in on who wins. Dalton Woods of Herscher and EJ Nwagwu of St. Rita could surprise in the final section. Quaevon Autman of Kankakee and Shoaf will be in the middle section. That should be a great race to watch.

4x400m Relay

IHSA State Meet Record – 3:13.66 – East St. Louis-Senior - 2007

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 3:17.57 – Cahokia - 2015

2021 2A Best – 3:24.77 - Eureka

2021 2A Sectional Best – 3:24.77 – Eureka

Preview – East St. Louis-Senior likes to claim this race as their own since they have won it so many times at this venue. The Flyers enter this event with the second fastest sectional time with Eureka two seconds ahead of them. Eureka has the top two runners at this distance in Class 2A in Aden Sears and Micah Senior that puts the Hornets ahead of the rest of the field. Olympia, Galesburg, Mascoutah, and Metamora are within a second of East St. Louis that could challenge for the win.

Field Events

High Jump

IHSA State Meet Record – 2.2225m (7-3.5) – Tom Smith, Heyworth - 1985

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 2.1717m (7-1.5) – Darryl Sullivan, Marion - 2016

2021 2A Best – 2.13m (7-0) – CJ Shoaf (SR), Mahomet (M. Seymour)

2021 2A Sectional Best – 2.07m (6-9.5) – CJ Shoaf (SR), Mahomet (M. Seymour)

Preview – Who else but CJ Shoaf in this event? The senior has the best sectional mark (6-9.5) by half a foot. Shoaf has been in the seven-foot stratosphere most of the outdoor season clearing 6-9 or better five times. The next closest is Teegan Hayes of Princeton who cleared 6-8.25 at Metamora on May 29. His next best mark was 6-4 twice.

It is up for grabs on who finishes second. Eureka’s Elijah Skutt and Aden Sears should be watched for. Jo’vioni Howard and Nicholas Deloach of Cahokia, Brett Giese of Paxton-Buckley-Loda, and Mason Clough of Herrin are some of the other athletes to watch in this event.

IHSA State Meet Record – 5.334m (17-6) – Zachery Bradford, Bloomington - 2018

2021 2A Sectional Best – 4.86m (15-11.25) – Colton Naffziger (SR), Normal (University)

Preview – This event could be closer than most think. Colton Naffziger should be the athlete to watch for the win. Every one of his 11 meets he cleared higher than 15 feet. He has cleared 16 feet or higher four times with 16-6 his best mark. His closest competition could be Dyson Roye of Marion who has a 15-6 best. Malakai Schaad of Geneseo has also cleared 15-6 and will challenge for one of the top three spots. Kyle Hensley of Mt. Zion had a 14-11.5 best last week and will challenge for a top spot along with Colin Beers of Marion.

2021 2A Sectional Best – 16.77m (55-0.25) – Barry Evans (SR), Mascoutah

Preview – This event in the ring could have many athletes putting for the win. Jackson Grant, seeded #4 in this meet, has the best 2A mark in the state at 56-9.5. Barry Evans had the best of the sectional performances with a 55-0.25 and will challenge for the win along with Grant. Jake Borman of Burlington Central has a 56-1.5 best  this season and could surprise some on Friday. JehChys Brown of Centralia had a personal best last week and will also be among the best in this event. David Russell of Illinois Valley Central and Anjay Rush of Hillcrest are some of the other athletes to watch for.

2021 2A Sectional Best – 48.86m (160-3.5) – Barry Evans (SR), Mascoutah

PreviewBarry Evans has been the most consistent of all qualifiers in this meet having thrown 170 feet or longer four times. Jake Borman of Burlington Central threw only 149-11 at sectionals but enters this meet with a 166-10 seasonal best. JehChys Brown of Centralia, Grant Foes of Princeton, Shane Anderson of St. Francis, and Jackson Grant of Carbondale all went past 150-feet at sectionals and will factor into who finishes in the top three.

Long Jump

IHSA State Meet Record – 7.62635m (25-0.25) – Ja’Mari Ward, Cahokia - 2015

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 7.62635m (25-0.25) – Ja’Mari Ward, Cahokia - 2015

2021 2A Best – 7.27m (23-10.25) – Daniel Mboyo (SR), Urbana

2021 2A Sectional Best – 7.10m (23-3.5) – Jackson Gerard (SR), Wheaton (St. Francis)

Preview – This is a wide-open event. Jackson Gerard enters this meet with the top sectional distance. Darcis Bitangalo of Rockford Boylan is the only other athlete in this field that went past 22 feet in sectionals. Jayden McCulskie-Green of Sandwich and Daniel Mboyo of Urbana are seasoned veteran with state meet experience that will be in the ix for the title. Bryson Wilson of Marion, Olek Clark of Sycamore, and Quaevon Autman of Kankakee along with Micah Senior and Aden Sears of Eureka also in the hunt for a state title.

Triple Jump

IHSA State Meet Record – 15.5702m (51-1) – Cameron Ruiz, Lake Villa (Lakes) - 2017

IHSA Class 2A State Meet Record – 15.3924m (50-6) – Ja’Mari Ward, Cahokia - 2016

2021 2A Best – 14.45m (47-5) – Jayden McCulskie-Green (SR), Sandwich

2021 2A Sectional Best – 14.00m (45-11.25) – Jayden McCulskie-Green (SR), Sandwich

Preview – It is hard to bet against Jayden McCulskie-Green in this event. The senior has never medaled in a state meet but has qualified two years for the trip to Charleston. He has jumped over 45-feet six times making him the favorite.

There are several athletes that might challenge for the win. Olek Clark of Sycamore and Billy Braid of Herrin were the only athletes past week to go past 44 feet.  Braid has a seasonal best of 46-7 at Murphysboro on May 13 but has not gotten close to that since. Nicholas Deloach is another athlete in the Cahokia Triple Jump factory to watch for. The sophomore has a best of 45-7.25 and could be the surprise in this event.

TEAMS TO FOLLOW

Eureka

Qualifiers: Total = 10; 8 Individuals, 2 Relays

Outlook – The team that has the inside track to win the 2A State Championships, Micah Senior and Aden Sears are the top two athletes in the 400 Meter Dash and should score major points in that race. The two runners will be on the 4x400m Relay that are the top seed entering this meet. Their 4x200m Relay should be among the scorers in that event. Senior and Sears are among the top 10 2A athletes in the Long Jump this season. The two could both score points in that event. Sears and Elijah Skutt could be among the top finishers in the High Jump. Mitchell Danner should be able to score in both the 110 High Hurdles and the 300 Meter Hurdles.

East St. Louis-Senior

Qualifiers: Total = 10; 7 Individuals. 3 Relays

Outlook – The Flyers will rely on Devonte Ford to score big points in his three individual points in their chase for a state trophy. The senior will be the big favorite in both the 110 High Hurdles and the 300 Meter Hurdles. Ford is one of the top five runners in the 200 Meter Dash and could score major points there. He is also a part of their 4x400m Relay that will be one of the race favorites. Demarlynn Taylor could be among the scorers in the 110 High Hurdles. Samuelton Dancer could be among the top nine finishers in the 300 Meter Hurdles. Timothy Cross could be among the top five finishers in the 400 Meter Dash. Kenneth Buchanon could be a surprise in the 100 Meter Dash. The Flyers have among the top times in the 4x100m Relay and 4x200m Relay and will be one of the favorites in both races.

Mascoutah

Qualifiers: Total = 9; 5 Individuals, 4 Relays

Outlook – Mascoutah will rely on their strong presence in the relays in this meet. The Indians had one of the top five seasonal times in the 4x800m Relay but did not have their best time in sectionals relegated to the first section. They could still score points in that race. Mascoutah will be favorite in the 4x100m Relay and 4x200m Relay. They should also score big points in the 4x400m Relay. Barry Evans will be the favorite in both the Shot Put and the Discus and score some big points for his team in those events. Nathan Hippard could score bonus points in the 200 Meter Dash. Avery Cozzi could score in the 400 Meter Dash. Jordan Eddy should be among the top finishers in the 800 Meter Run.

Burlington Central

Qualifiers: Total = 11; 8 Individuals 3 Relays

Outlook – The Rockets are a team to watch for on Friday. They may not win any events but could score enough points to finish among the first three teams. Yusuf Baig could be among the top finishers in the 3200 Meter Run and could score points in the 1600 Meter Run. Zac Schmidt will be doing relay work in this meet. He could also be among the top four finishers in the 400 Meter Dash. Jacoby Haynes could as well score points with Schmidt. Burlington Central will get high finishes in both the 4x800m Relay and 4x400m Relay. Jake Borman qualified in both weight events. He should score big points in both the Shot Put and the Discus.

Rockford Christian

Qualifiers: Total = 10; 6 Individuals, 4 Relays

Outlook – A good day on Friday could get the Royal Lions into trophy competition. It all starts with the four relays that qualified for the trip to Charleston. Their quartets in the 4x100m Relay and 4x200m Relay have some of the fastest times in Class 2A and could pick up big points. Their team in the 4x400m Relay should also pick up points. It would not count out their 4x800m Relay team either. Stephen Thomas could be among the top nine finishers in the 800 Meter Run. D’Artagnon Beaver could also pick up points in the 3200 Meter Run. Collin Hook could be a surprise in both the 100 High Hurdles and 300 Meter Hurdles.

Urbana

Qualifiers: Total = 6; 4 Individuals, 2 Relays

Outlook – The number of qualifiers is low for the Tigers. The quality is there to get themselves in contention for a trophy. Jeremiah Hamilton has the top time in the 200 Meter Dash and could pick up big points. Urbana is among the top teams in both the 4x100m Relay and 4x200m Relay and could pick up major points in those races. Daniel Mboyo has the top performance in Class 2A in the Long Jump. Mboyo should pick up big points in that event. Sam Lambert could score points in the 3200 Meter Run.

Sandwich

Qualifiers: Total = 8; 7 Individuals, 1 Relay

Outlook – Don’t count out this team when the team points are totaled up at the end of the meet. The Indians could get the points that place them in the first three teams.
