2021 IHSA Class 1A Regional Highlights

Here are highlights of the 15 IHSA Class 1A regional meets that took place on Friday and Saturday.

 

Lisle Sectional

Latin School Regional

Girls - #14 DePaul College Prep rolled to the regional win in the Girls race Friday afternoon at Lincoln Park. The Rams scored 18 points 6 runners in the top 7. DePaul’s Lorelei Travers ran 19:50 to win the Girls individual title by 22 seconds ahead of teammate Grace Moeller. Chicago University scored 44 points to finish second. Only six teams advanced to sectionals out of this regional meet.

Boys – #2 Latin School put three runners in the first four finishers and ahead of #7 DePaul College Prep’s pack to win the Boys Regional title with 23 points. The Romans placed all seven runners in the race in the first 13. Kieran Subra of Lycee Francois de Chicago pulled away to win the individual title running 15:17. Latin School’s Ryan Hardiman 15:22 to finish second with teammates Akili Parekh and Ben Gibson within 13 seconds off him. DePaul countered with the next three places led by Mac Kittrell and then Charlie Richardson and Owen Flom. Latin School placed 5 runners in the top 10. DePaul placed 5 runners in the first 14. Chicago University scored 83 points to finish third.

Harvest Christian Academy Regional

Girls Lianna Surtz and her Rosary teammates made it look easy in this regional meet Saturday morning. Surtz ran 18:43 to win the individual title on the HCA 5-kilometer course. Lily Manchester of IC Catholic Prep was 35 seconds back in second timed in 19:18. Lily Lebo of Wheaton Academy was another minute back in third with Olivia Kunio of Rosary right with Lebo. Both were timed in 20:18. #7 Rosary, led by Surtz and Kunio, placed 5 runners in the top 9 to win the regional title with 29 points. #8 IC Catholic Prep (54 points) and #13 Wheaton Academy (84 points) finished second and third.

Boys Daniel Winkelman of Harvest Christian Academy defended his home course in gearing up for next week’s sectional race. Winkelman was timed in 16:21 to take home the regional title by 31 seconds ahead of Sheldon Powell of Wheaton Academy. #17 Northridge Prep won the team title in a close three team race. Northridge Prep, led by the fourth-place finish from Mark Maska, placed 5 runners in the top 19 to win with 50 points. Wheaton Academy received top 10 finishes from Powell, Westen Myers (5th), and Daniel Kersey (7th) to score 58 points to finish second. Harvest Christian Academy (61 points) and Aurora Central Catholic (79 points) finished third and fourth.

Kankakee McNamara Regional

Girls – #17 Joliet Catholic placed 5 in the top 16 to win the team title with 35 points. #25 Chicago Christian (72 points) and Westmont (100 points) were the next two teams in the standings. Claire Blotnik led the Joliet Catholic charge running 19:12 for the individual win. Her teammate Ella Farris ran 19:24 finishing second ahead of Anna Enderle of Chicago Christian (19:26). Jaden Lucas of Pontiac finished fourth (19:40). Herscher (127 points), Beecher (134 points), and Kankakee McNamara (146 points) finished fourth through sixth. Pontiac (149 points) edged Montini (150 points) by one point for the final sectional qualifying spot.

BoysDrew Rogers of Herscher again destroyed another field in running 14:55 to win by more than a minute ahead of Bryson Grant of Iroquois West (15:58). Rogers’ win helped #13 Herscher win the regional championship with 72 points. #24 Pontiac (75 points), Joliet Catholic (79 points), and Kankakee McNamara (84 points) were the next three teams.

 

Oregon Sectional

Peru-St. Bede Regional

Girls – #26 Seneca, helped by the individual win from Evelyn O’Connor and third-place finish from Ashley Alsvig, put 5 runners in the top 19 to win the regional crown with 38 points. O’Connor ran 18:19 to win the individual race by 25 seconds ahead of Kennady Anderson of Wethersfield (18:44). Alsvig ran 19:06 to finish third. Sandwich was the closest team to Seneca scoring 78 points to finish second.

Boys – #15 Amboy placing three runners in the top four helped them win the regional championship with 34 points. They were 10 points ahead of second-place Sandwich (44 points). Amboy’s Brock Loftus ran 15:07 to easily win the individual race by 37 seconds ahead of teammate Kyler McNinch (15:44). Wyatt Miller of Sandwich (15:45) and Ian Eller of Amboy (15:52) finished third and fourth.

Rock Falls Regional

Girls – #18 Rock Falls edged #12 Mercer County 52-53 for the team championship. Sherrard (85 points) and Rock Island Alleman (89 points) finished third and fourth. Tayli Hutlin led Rock Falls running 18:24 to win the individual race by 10 seconds ahead of Eden Mueller of Mercer County (18:34). Rock Falls placed 5 runners in the top 21. Mercer County placed 5 runners in the top 18. Hanna Ford’s fifth-pace finish for Rock Falls was the key in their win.

Boys – #8 Riverdale swept the first three places to help them win the team title with 26 points with 5 runners in the top 11. Tommy Murray ran 15:30 for the regional win to lead Riverdale with teammates Landis Musser (15:40) and Peyton Sand (16:17) finished second and third. #19 Sterling Newman finished second (60 points) led by Lucas Simpson’s fifth-place finish.

Winnebago Regional

Girls – It was an easy win for top ranked Winnebago on their home course placing 6 runners in the top 8 and scoring only 16 points. Rockford Christian and Byron were a distant second and third both scoring 87 points. Grace Erb ran the 2.85-mile course in 17:13 to claim the win ahead of teammates Kaylee Woolery (17:27) and Marissa Roggensack (17:33). The Indians had a 43 second split on their top five runners.

Boys – #5 Rockford Christian showed domination in this race taking home the first three places and placing their scorers in the first 11 to easily win with 23 points. Rockford Lutheran (110 points) and Marengo (115 points) were the closest teams to the Royal Lions finishing second and third. Ethan Walsh and Westin Forward came in together finishing first and second both timed in 14:56. Teammate Aidan Sosnowski ran 15:11 to finish third. Rockford Christian’s top five split was 56 seconds.

 

Elmwood Sectional

Eureka Regional

GirlsAnna Perry of Eureka won for the final time on her home course timed at 17:20 to win the regional title by 55 seconds ahead of freshman Nellie Melick of El Paso-Gridley (18:15) with Kaitlyn Burge of Deer Creek-Mackinaw finishing third (18:20). Perry’s win along with 4 Hornet runners in the top 8 helped #5 Eureka win the regional title with 42 points. #21 Stanford Olympia (79 points) finished second ahead of third place El Paso-Gridley (95 points).

Boys Mason Stoeger of Fieldcrest continued his winning ways running 15:04 to win the regional crown. Sachit Muduli of Normal University ran 15:25 to finish second. Sam Springer of Delavan led the pack in running 15:41 to finish third. #9 Normal University was in control with Muduli’s finish and 5 runners in the top 12. The Pioneers scored 33 points to win the team title. #9 Stanford Olympia, with Owen Dare leading his team finishing fourth, placed 5 runners in the top 20 to finish second with 45 points. Eureka (97 points) finished third.

Farmington Regional

Girls – It was close for the team title in this regional. #29 Williamsville placed their top 3 runners in the first 6 places to help them win the regional championship with 46 points. #16 Elmwood, led by top 10 finishes from Addie Symonds (3rd) and Chloe Kelly (8th), scored 50 points to place a close second. Louisa Wilson of Williamsville had a convincing individual win crossing the line in 18:24. She won by 30 seconds ahead of Meg Simmons of Astoria who had a 18:54 time.

Boys – #11 Elmwood was in control putting 4 runners in the top 6 to win easily scoring only 27 points. Petersburg PORTA (66 points) edged #26 Williamsville (68 points) by two points to place second. Thomas Harmon led the way for Elmwood timed in 15:30 for the individual win. His teammate Isaiah Hill ran 15:57 to finish second just ahead of Daniel Giacomini of Williamsville (15:58).

Liberty Regional

Girls – All six scoring teams qualified in this regional. It was #15 Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin that had the final say as they placed 5 runners in the top 13 to win with 23 points. Vivian Rahmel of Sacred Heart-Griffin took home the individual honors running 19:15 for the win. Her teammate Kaitlyn Lee finished second (19:37) ahead of Jaidyn Albers of Pleasant Plains (19:43). #28 Pleasant Plains finished second (55 points) ahead of Quincy Notre Dame (59 points).

BoysMiles Sheppard of Hamilton-West Hancock broke his own course record with a 14:46 time to win the regional title by 79 seconds ahead of teammate Noah Stout (16:05). #6 Hamilton-West Hancock was in control in this race placing 5 in the first 11 to score only 30 points to capture the regional title. #30 Pleasant Plains finished second (61 points) while Franklin scored 74 points to finish third.

 

Decatur St. Teresa Sectional

Chrisman Regional

Girls – One of the top Girls races in Class 1A came in this regional. Kate Ahmari of Urbana University ran 18:13 to claim the individual win ahead of Erica Woodard of Tolono Unity (18:40) and Aleigha Garrison of Judah Christian. #2 Tolono Unity placed 5 runners in the top 11 to score 29 points and capture the regional title. #9 Urbana University (55 points) and #3 St. Joseph-Ogden (92 points) to finish second and third. Only seven teams scored with all teams advancing to sectionals next week.

BoysRyder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda was in control in winning the individual title in this regional. James took home the win in 15:45 winning by a margin of 35 seconds ahead of Eli Mojonnier of Bismarck-Henning and another six seconds ahead of Henry Laufenberg of Urbana University. Top ranked St. Joseph-Ogden did not have one of their top five Carson Maroon in their lineup but still put 5 runners in the top 10 to win the team title with 33 points. Charlie Mabry and Luke Stegall finished fourth and fifth to lead the Spartans as the two finished within a second of each other. #18 Paxton-Buckley-Loda (79 points) and #2 Bismarck-Henning (85 points) finished second and third.

Robinson Regional

Girls – It was close once again between #20 Marshall and #10 Robinson in contending for the team title in this regional race. Brooklyn Bender (18:23) and Isabel Arthur (18:39) took the first two places while teammate Cailin Morris finished fifth to help Marshall win the team title edging Robinson 37-41. Newton scored 66 points to finish third. Newton’s Rylea Borgic finished third (18:45) while Katelyn Jones of Robinson ran 18:59 to place fourth.

Boys – #14 Newton’s pack was in control in this race placing their top 5 in the first 9 places to easily win the team title with 24 points. Robinson and Fairfield both scored 106 points in finishing second and third. Isaac Stanford of Flora ran 16:06 to claim the individual win by 15 seconds ahead of Newton’s Nick Zwilling (16:19). Austin Wesley of Robinson (16:24) and Griffin Elder of St. Anthony (16:25) finished third and fourth.

Tuscola Regional

Girls – #4 Monticello took the first three finishes to help them win the team title with 31 points. The Lady Sages placed 5 runners in the top 14 in their win. #24 Clinton finished second (55 points) with Shelbyville scoring 92 points to finish third. Mabry Bruhn led the Monticello sweep running 18:18 for the individual win. Teammates Rachel Koon (18:39) and Sylvia Miller (18:56) finished second and third.

Boys – #4 Arthur-Lovington placed 4 in the first 8 and 5 in the top 24 to win the regional team title with 44 points. It was close behind ALAH as #12 Monticello (76 points), #20 St. Teresa (79 points), #29 Shelbyville (81 points), and #28 Tuscola (93 points) were the next four teams. Logan Beckmeier of Arthur-Lovington ran 15:49 for the win. Phoenix Firnhaber of Shelbyville (15:56) and Ed Mitchell of Monticello (16:08) finished second and third.

Trenton-Wesclin Sectional

Benton Regional

GirlsOlivia Phillips and Laura Heape took the top two spots to help #11 DuQuoin win the team title with 40 points. Phillips ran 17:41 to win the individual race with Heape finishing 37 seconds behind her teammate. DuQuoin placed 5 runners in the top 20 with their first 4 placing in the top 9. #19 Pinckneyville scored 61 points behind the 3-4 finish from Vanessa Teal and Taylor Kurtz. Breese Mater Dei scored 104 points to finish third.

Boys Gavin Genisio ripped another fast performance this time on his home course. The Benton junior ran a course record of 14:05 at the 2.92-mile distance to claim the regional title. Isaac Teel of Pinckneyville was 20 seconds back running 14:24 to finish second. It was close for the team regional title with #3 Benton edging #16 Pinckneyville 49-53. Benton’s pack placed 5 runners in the top 17 with their second through fifth runners separated by only 23 seconds. Pinckneyville placed 4 runners in the top 10, 5 runners in the first 30.

Belleville Althoff Catholic Regional

GirlsElena Rybak of Father McGivney made another huge statement in winning the individual title in this regional. The freshman ran 17:51 to win by almost 90 seconds ahead of teammate Kaitlyn Hatley. Althoff Catholic’s Claire Nash ran 19:51 to finish third. #6 Father McGivney placed 3 runners in the top 9 to help them win the regional team title with 53 points. Freeburg was the closest team scoring 74 points to finish second.

Boys – Freeburg, led by the 5th place finish of Josh LaChance, placed all of their scorers in the first 14 to win the regional title with 40 points. Belleville Althoff Catholic (66 points) and Litchfield (80 points) finished second and third. Camden Quarton of Litchfield won the individual title (16:07) by 10 seconds of Althoff Catholic’s Jack Hiller.

Carterville Regional

Girls – Only 5 teams scored in this meet. All will advance. Carterville edged Murphysboro 52-53 for the regional championship paced by the fourth-place finish from freshman Molly Robertson. It was close for the next two spots with Anna-Jonesboro scoring 65 points for third and Sparta placing fourth with 73 points. Ahry Gomer of Pope County ran an amazing 17:08 for 2.9-miles to win the Girls Regional ahead of Brodie Denny of Anna-Jonesboro (18:07) and Miah Gilmore of Murphysboro (18:15).

Boys – Steeleville rolled to the regional title with 25 points placing 5 runners in the top 9. Red Bud (93 points), Anna-Jonesboro (101 points), and Carterville (104) finished second through fourth. Nick Fehr of Red Bud ran 15:29 to win the individual race by 10 seconds ahead of Christian Rees of Steeleville (15:39).
