2022 IHSA XC Season Previews - 1A Boys Teams

By Michael Newman [email protected]

Latin School won their first state championship in the program’s history last November based on all three all-state runners and gutty performances from the pack behind them. One of the all-state runners from that team have graduated, but this team still has the talent to repeat.

The one team that stepped into the spotlight first last fall and then in track was DePaul College Prep. The Chicago school was only five points behind Latin School in the Lisle Sectional. Latin School had their say the following week. The fact that DePaul returns their top six runners (including two all-state runners) from that race. The improvement that came from the Rams during the track season is convincing to put them in the top spot in Class 1A.

There is a separation between those schools and then the next 12. Monticello stepped up last year and could challenge for a trophy along with St. Teresa, Newton, Rockford Christian, and Newton. Unless either of the top two teams come down with a rash of injuries, I do not see those squads leave the top two positions all year.

There are so many storylines that we will follow this fall in Class 1A. Let’s look at some of those teams that will toe the line this season.

1 Chicago (DePaul College Prep)

Coach – Mitchell Baum; 2021 Finish – 3rd, 1A State

Top Runners – Mac Kittrell SR (16, 15:22), Charlie Richardson SR (25, 15:34), Owen Flom SR (67, 16:15), Bryan Malkowski JR (78, 16:22), William Beebe SR (95, 16:28), Elias Roldan SO (132, 16:48), Maddux Bailey JR, Jack Fry SR, Richard Rosen SO, Davis Ruder JR

Notes – DePaul College Prep realized some of their dreams last fall having two all-state runners on their way to finish third in last year’s state meet. All six runners from that team are coming back to run. Not all of those guys will be on the line when they run their first race of the season. An injury to their #2 runner Charlie Richardson during the end of their track season could hold him out for a while. “Charlie’s unfortunate injury at the end of the track season has kept his summer focused mostly on recovery,” said his coach,” Mitchell Baum. He has been building fitness via other cross-training methods. Through it all though, Charlie has not lost his deeply competitive spirit. He’ll surely be back, stronger than ever by the season’s end.”

This team is focused looking forward to continuing what they paused at the end of last season. “Our training went well,” exclaimed Baum. “As our team and culture has grown, we have more and more buy in from athletes to take the time to train, even when they can’t make our summer camp specifically.”

This team has the talent that continues to develop and get better as they saw during the summer. This team will still be tough even without Richardson in the lineup. Mac Kittrell was the team’s top runner all last season. He finished 16th in last year’s state race. His all-state performance during the track season indicates that he could be one of the top 1A runners in the state. “Mac is super focused on maximizing his potential as a competitive distance runner this season,” said Baum. “He’s dialed in and looking to make a serious impact on the 1A scene.” With Richardson out, expect Owen Flom, last year’s third runner to take a huge step forward. “Owen had an incredible first year with us last year,” added Baum. “He’s been focused in since the end of the track season to build his distance capacity and fight alongside the rest of our varsity squad.”

I think we know the Rams will be ready to go by conference meet time and then the state series. The meets in September and October will get the other runners vying for those top seven spots. Baum knows that it is not essential to be in state mode in September. “As is the case with every season, we have talked and continued to build a culture of healthy training, and support for one another,” said Baum. “Our upperclassmen are veteran competitors at this point, and their greatest legacy is to build up our program from the bottom up. Without their example of leadership, we would be nowhere.” Bryan Malkowski, Maddux Bailey, and Elias Roldan are three runners that made huge strides during the summer which should continue to the fall. William Beebe and Jack Fry are runners you could see in their top seven.

“My goal each season is to foster a love for this sport, and a sense of excellence in all that we do as a team. We were so proud to bring home a trophy last year and will always aim to bring our best each year. Should that warrant a higher finish, we of course would not be mad about it.” The love showed when this team accepted their trophy last November. This will still be a team that will challenge for a state title even if Richardson who is expected to be back. We should see some growth from this group while their all-state runner is out. “Having been a Coach for this program since some of its earliest days, I’ve been most impressed with the high quality level of training that some of our student-athletes have put in,” said Baum. “Mac Kittrell is living and breathing distance running — it’s incredible. Him and his peers have grown to understand, engage with, and help build their training to best fit the athlete they have grown into. That self-awareness in training takes a lot of time and miles to build.”

2 Chicago (Latin)

Coach – Dan Daly; 2021 Finish – 1st, 1A State

Top Runners – Akili Parekh SR (10, 15:18), Ben Gibson SO (20, 15:29), Daniel Goodman SO (97, 16:29), Jackson Ballard SR (106, 16:33), Matthew Kotcher SR (159, 16:59), Charlie Steffen JR (190, 17:15), Jack Ramsey FR, Andrew Tucker-Thayer FR, Jack Lyoms SO, Will Del Hierro SR, Miles Daly SO

Notes – Latin School accomplished so many things on their way to the state title. The biggest was that the Romans had three all-state runners. It was the first time they had multiple all-state runners in the history of the Boys team. Things will be a little different this fall with the graduation of Ryan Hardiman. The focus, however, stays the same in trying to run their best at the end of the season. “The one thing that I liked about the training of these guys was their dedication, desire, and discipline,” said their coach, Dan Daly. “All of those played a part in our training this summer they looked great.”

Akili Parekh took another step up the ladder at the end of last fall and then again during the track season. He finished 10th last fall right behind Hardiman. Parekh followed that up in the spring earning all-state honors in the 3200 Meter Run and just missing all state in the 1600 Meter Run. His personal bests dropped to 4:22.16 for the 1-Mile Run and 9:18.99 for 3200-meters. He will be one of the top five runners in Class 1A this fall. Ben Gibson is the other all-state athlete back finishing 20th as a freshman. He qualified for state in the 800 Meter Run and ran on the team’s state qualifying 4x800m Relay. He also ran a personal best of 4:28.70 in the 1-Mile Run. “Akili had a fantastic summer of running, he looks smooth and stronger than he did at this time last year,” added Daly. “Ben also had a very good summer with solid mileage. The best part is he stayed and is healthy.”

Daniel Goodman’s crawling and surging for the finish line nailed the state championship down for this team. “Danny was the breakout star last year,” Daly added. “Before last fall he had never run cross country before. He now has a year under his belt. He loves running and his teammates. If he stays upright at the state meet we'll be a team to contend with again.” Jackson Ballard and Charlie Steffen improved this summer and could contend for the top five. There is a new freshman group heading in with Jack Ramsey and Andrew Tucker-Thayer that could be difference makers in their top seven.

Latin School will get the low numbers from Parekh and Gibson. A key will be who could step up to keep the point total down compared to what Hardiman gave them. This again is a great team that would like to repeat at state champions. Moving the second pack closer to the front could be a big thing for Daly and Latin School.

3 Normal (University)

Coach – Lester Hampton; 2021 Finish – 4th, 1A State

Top Runners – Brandt Henderson SR (29, 15:46), Sachit Munduli JR (38, 15:50), Mason Hart JR (68, 16:15), Jonah Kaeb JR (113, 16:36), Ethan Reisinger SR (127, 16:45), Mitchell Hayes JR, Gabe Zacharias SO, Landen Alcorn JR, Jonah Harris SR, Sean Kaeb FR, JT Piper FR

Notes – The summer was not the best for the Pioneers after just missing a trophy to place fourth at last year’s state meet. “The summer didn’t go quite as well as we would have liked, we’ve had some nagging illnesses and injuries linger over from the spring.  We only used about 20 of the days we had available so we’re a little behind where we would normally be,” said U-High Coach Lester Hampton. “It was a typical summer for us so it’s hard to say if any one individual has improved more than another.  We’re not as intense as some other schools might be.”

Expectations could be better as they start the season. Injuries and illnesses may play a part in that. Brandt Henderson just missed all-state by four places and should be the team’s top runner. “Brandt is working hard,” said Hampton. “He is showing a lot of promise not only as a runner but as a leader too. I can’t wait to see where this journey will take him this season.” Sachit Muduli was the team’s top runner for most of last season until state where he finished 9 places and only four seconds behind Henderson. Injuries and illnesses have slowed him down over the past four months. “Unfortunately, it has not been the summer Sachit was hoping for, between an extended illness in the spring and a bad hamstring he has not been able to train.  We’re hoping to get him healthy and back on track soon.”

Mason Hart was the team’s third runner at state and could move closer to Henderson. Jonah Kaeb and Ethan Reisinger also ran state and will be two of the runners that will challenge for a top five spot. Landon Alcorn and Gabe Zacharias will also be welcome addition to their top seven.

This is a good packing team as we saw last fall. Their split off Muduli was 70 seconds in their conference Meet. It dipped down to only 36 seconds at state. Part of that had to do with Henderson and Muduli came back closer to the pack. This team could be dangerous when they get healthy. Fortunately, the state meet is in September. Their split to start the season without Muduli is close to 60 seconds. That will come down when this team is healthy. “Last year was a special season for this group, they were able to accomplish great things with Regional and Sectional championships and a 4th place finish at State,” said Hampton. “Obviously, we would like to improve on that this year but most of what we’re able to accomplish will depend on us staying healthy.  Last year, going into State we were probably the healthiest we’ve ever been in my 34 years of coaching. I was most impressed with their togetherness, it’s something that must continue for us to be a good team.”

4 Rockford (Christian)

Coach – Randy Moore; 2021 Finish – 5th, 1A State

Top Runners – Weston Forward JR (19, 15:28), Aidan Sosnowski SR (54, 16:07), Noah Shook SR (144, 16:52), Tyler Nalley SR (157, 16:58), Reece Wesselin SR (219, 17:46), Andrew Kurien SO, Sam Walsh FR, Evan White FR, Joel White FR

Notes – The Royal Lions have taken some good journeys in the years that Coach Randy Moore started coaching this program. Last year showed that all the work that they put in during the season paid off when they got to Detweiller Park. Rockford Christian finished at state and has a good group of five runners back ready to take another trip. “Summer training was outstanding,” said Moore.  “I am very pleased with the squad’s overall mileage and growth in leadership. This 2022 team might be the most diligent group we’ve ever had at logging mileage. I believe it has helped them to motivate and inspire each other during these summer months. Additionally, the overwhelming majority of their miles over the last two months have been run together.”

The team had their top two runners in all-state spots last year. We should see the same thing happen in this team again this fall. Weston Forward continues to improve with every season. Aidan Sosnowski had a powerful track season where he anchored his team to a state title in the 4x800m Relay running a huge personal best in the process. “Weston Forward and Aidan Sosnowski have both taken a step up in the volume and intensity,” said Moore. “They have quickly become complimentary training partners. Weston has helped stretch Aidan’s endurance and bump in mileage. Aidan has challenged Weston’s speed and intensity with intervals. They might become our best 1-2 punch in program history.”

The pack on their three through five pack will be a work in progress especially for the first month of the season. Noah Shook and Tyler Nalley  were six seconds apart at state and will challenge along with Reece Wesseln for a top five spot. Andrew Kuren is running cross country for the first time after being on his school’s track team last spring. He had a good summer of training and may also challenge for a spot. Freshmen Sam Walsh along with Evan and Joel White will learn about high school running early and also be surprises in the top seven varsity group.

”One of our program’s core beliefs is that when you run the miles, build the culture, and do it together that special things will happen,” said Moore. “We’ve learned not to try and predict those outcomes, but instead focus on the journey. This group has bought into that philosophy quickly. So, this is going to be a fun and memorable season.” Their journey this fall could result in a state trophy.”

5 Decatur (St. Teresa)

Coach – Todd Vohland; 2021 Finish – 18th, 1A State

Top Runners – Caleb Kernaghan SR (63, 16:11), Martin Velchek SR (91, 16:25), Evan Cook SO (111, 16:35), Cameron Kernaghan SR (16:58), Gus Striglos JR (179, 17:11), Diego Hernandez SR (186, 17:16), Matt Auburn SO (237, 18:08), Carson Kernaghan SR (played football in 2021), Colton Deetz SO, Christian Brilley SR.

Notes – The finish that St. Teresa had at state last year was not indicative of how good this team was for most of the season. The Bulldogs finished 18th in last year’s state meet. The good thing is that their entire top seven is back. “I thought the training went very well, there is a sense of accountability and the team overall put in a lot of good work,” said their coach, Todd Vohland.

Caleb Kernaghan is one of three brothers on this team. They are triplets. Caleb’s improvement last spring shows he is ready for a big senior year. “Caleb had such a strong finish to his track season, and that confidence has carried over,” Vohland said. “ One of the great things about Caleb is that he cares about the team first.  He wants to get better because he knows that will make the team stronger.  He also knows there are at least two other runners who are threats to be our #1.” One of his brothers, Cameron, was the team’s fourth runner in the state meet. His other brother, Carson, played football last fall, but ran in the fall of 2020 since there was no football because of COVID. He did run a personal best of 17:35 his sophomore season.

One runner that could run in the top spot is Evan Cook who had a great summer of training. Martin Velchek was within 15 seconds of Caleb Kernaghan in some meets last fall. Velchek, along with Cook will give the Bulldogs a significant presence in the front.

Vohland stated that there was an overall improvement with the team this summer. “It is the fact that they want to not just qualify for state, but want to push into that top 10,” added Vohland. They might pace higher than the top 10. They will need their top five split to be under 60 seconds. That split was 67 seconds in their sectional race and 60 seconds at state. Their best run was in their conference meet where they had a split of 38 seconds. This team will challenge for a trophy if they run closer together.

6 St. Joseph-Ogden

Coach – Jason Retz; 2021 Finish – 6th, 1A State

Top Runners – Payton Wendell SR (58, 16:10), Carson Maroon JR (104, 16:32), Ethan Blackburn SR (128, 16:47), Aiden Armstrong JR (151, 16:56), Lance Retz FR, Holden Jones JR, Mason Guido SO, Joe Griebat SO , Jack Fisher SO

Notes – The Spartans just missed the top five at last year’s state meet finishing sixth. They lost three of their top four runners but have a group back that could again challenge for a top five finish. “It's a better summer than a year ago,” said their coach Jason Retz.  “It'll be interesting to see where it takes us.”

Payton Wendell was the team’s third or fourth runner most of last season will be one of the runners to watch in the front. Carson Maroon was the team’s top runner at their conference meet but missed two meets due to injury or illness, came back in his final two races to be the team’s fifth runner. Ethan Blackburn and Aiden Armstrong also return with state meet experience. Holden Jones could fight for a top five spot along with freshman Lance Retz could make an impact as a scoring runner at their first meet and then beyond.

This team will be difference makers if they can keep their pack tight. It is projected to be between 40-45 seconds with the freshman Retz a part of it. Even with the loss of runners, this team will still be back in the front in 2022.

7 Monticello

Coach – David Remmert; 2021 Finish – 10th, 1A State

Top Runners – Jacob Elston SR (42, 15:54), Caleb Wood SO (124, 16:44), Logan Sikorski SR (130, 16:47), River Derby SO (164, 17:03), Ayden LeGrande SO (184, 17:14) Isaac Gardner JR, Caleb Ratts SO, Liam Sokolowski SR

Notes – The Sages lost two of their top three runners from last fall. This team was still to be strong after finishing 10th at Detweiller Park.

Jacob Elston will step up as the team’s top runner after finishing 43rd last year. A top 25 finish could be within his reach. Three freshman ran in last year’s state meet for Monticello. Caleb Wood, River Derby, and Ayden LeGrande were within 30 seconds of each other at state. It was 72 seconds in their sectional race. Logan Sikorski was the team’s fifth runner and will also be within that top five. Elston and Wood interchanged the second runner spot in the last month of the season. It was Elston’s turn at Detweiller. The two were separated by 50 seconds in that race. The top five split is projected to be between 70 to 75 seconds on their top five. That split will need to come down for this team to better last year’s state performance.

8 Newton

Coach – Tim Bower; 2021 Finish – 13th, 1A State

Top Runners – Luke Weber JR (103, 16:31), Clay Bergbower SR (109, 16:34), Owen Mahaffey SR (110, 16:35), Luis Zavala SR (138, 16:50), Nick Shamhart SR (183, 17:13), Ben Street SR (217, 17:45), Brock Probst SO, Jackson Somberger SO, Hatden Borgic FR

Notes – This team will surprise some finishing in the top 10 this year. They could end up finishing in the top 5. The Eagles lost their top runner Nick Zwilling due to graduation. Everyone, however, is back from this team that finished 13th at state. “Our training for this summer went well,” said Tim Bower. “Kids worked hard after the track season and came in very strong.  I saw Owen Mahaffey and Nick Shamhart as making improvements even since the track season.  Owen is a great kid who works hard, loves to finish strong, and is a great leader for the team.”

This is a pack team where Mahaffey could be the top runner or Luke Weber or Clay Bergbower. The split from their second through fifth runner at state was only 19 seconds. Overall, it was 42 seconds. In their race at sectionals where they finished fifth. That top four split was only nine seconds. They will miss Zwilling at first because he was the team’s #1 runner. A pack like this can place you high in a big race. The key is moving this group closer to the front. “While they seem concerned about losing Nick Zwilling, I keep telling them that it will be fine,” said Bower. “I think they will surprise themselves and still be a very solid team if we can stay healthy.  They are a very solid team that push each other, so even if 1 has an off day, the team score isn't going to suffer much.”

9 Eureka

Coach – Olivia Morris; 2021 Finish – 20th, 1A State

Top Runners -  Charlie Bardwell SR (94, 16:28), Tucker Hinkle SO (100, 16:31), Carson Lehman JR (143, 16:52), Andrew Perry JR (162, 17:02), Gabriel Gerber SR (189, 17:15), Brady Monk JR (192, 17:16), Nathan Otto JR, Brock Monk FR, Connell Roth FR, Orion Mahannah FR

Notes – The Hornets should take a huge step up this fall especially with the runners that are coming back. Eureka will return six runners from their 20th place state team. “The boys did a great job of being consistent, making summer practices a priority, as well as challenging each other on their runs,” said their coach, Olivia Morris.

The team had good pack running at the end of last season ending with a 34 second split. Charlie Bardwell is one of the runners on this team that will make this pack go. “I was impressed with Charlie and his decision to buy into summer training and set goals for himself every week,” said Morris. “His goals and planning were noticed by his teammates. They would do their best to follow suit.” Tucker Hinkle surprised some as a freshman running as the team’s second runner down the stretch. An injury slowed him down in track, but he is ready to big step up. “Tucker suffered an injury during track season,” added Morris. “He started a bit off our main pack.  He is hungry and motivated and had a great summer of training.  I’m excited to see what he does this season.” Carson Lehman is the third runner that could jump into the top spot after a summer of great training.

Andrew Perry, Gabriel Gerber, and Brady Monk solidified the back half of the pack and should do so again in 2022. Morris has a talented group of nine freshmen where some of them could make an impact this fall. Keep an eye on some of them including  Brock Monk and Connell Roth. “I saw a handful of freshmen make big jumps from the beginning to the end of the summer, challenging themselves more and seeing their competitive side come out,” said Morris  “I also thought our top group, led by senior Charlie Bardwell, has made a big jump from last summer to this summer in that they are more focused and driven during each practice.  They did a great job of setting the bar high for summer running.  Overall, the entire team showed improvement.” This team showed great pack development last fall in races and will have to step up that discipline once again. The team will need to move up in races with two or three of their top runners going under 16-minutes. Keeping that split between 30 to 35 seconds could mean big things this fall for the Hornets.

10 Elgin (Harvest Christian Academy)

Coach – Steven Bland; 2021 Finish – 19th, 1A State

Top Runners – Daniel Winkelman SR (4, 14:42), David Peterson SR (117, 16:40), JJ Gonnam JR (131, 16:48), Sam Rozier JR (191, 17:16), Soren Gray SO (245, 18:29),  Zeke Schroeder JR, Ekijah Terrien SO

Notes – The Lions welcome back 5 runners from their team that finished 19 at state last fall. The development of a pack will be something that will be necessary to get this team into the top 10. Their top runner Daniel Winkelman will be the main focus in this team.

Winkleman is the consummate team runner and it showed for his team at last spring’s state track meet. He could have been one of the favorites in the 3200 Meter Run. Instead, he was on the track with his teammates in the 4x800m Relay. He brought his team from fifth to third with a 1:54.97 anchor leg. He came back and ran 1:56 to finish sixth in the 800 Meter Run. He was close to his PR running 4:19 to place second in the 1600 Meter Run. “Daniel has always led by example,” said their coach, Stephen Bland/ “We’ve been working with to become a complete leader for the past year, we hope he excels at that this year. Daniel came out of the basketball season physically and emotionally worn and with injury.  It took us to the middle of July to get him in a good spot, hopefully we are now ready to begin to get some solid training into him.”

Winkelman will be chasing after an individual state title. David Peterson was within 58 seconds of Winkelman. He was closer to him in races earlier in the state series. That experience should drive Peterson to take that up in his improvement curve. A top 30 to 40 finish is not out of the question for him. We could see JJ Gonnam move up with Peterson. The two runners averaged a 10 second gap between each other. Sam Rozier and Soren Gray might need to move up to be closer in the top five. Bland has a group of freshmen that could contribute immediately to the top seven this fall.

Winkleman will be getting his team low points all season. The movement of the pack behind him will be a key to success this fall. If the pack does not get closer to each other, the Lions could be in between 15 to 20. A good pack behind Winkelman will mean great things for this group.

11 Sandwich

Coach – Bolaji Adeoti; 2021 Finish – 21st, 1A State

Top Runners – Wyatt Miller SR (37, 15:50), Max Cryer JR (61, 16:11), Dayton Beatty SR (134, 16:48), Hudson Willis SR (226, 17:54), Travis Kellogg JR (252, 18:43), Miles Corder JR (257, 19:28), Alex Walsh FR, Joshua Schaefers SO, Jaedon Thompson SR

Notes – Sandwich made a huge step up in Class 1A last fall making it to the state meet for the first time since 2003. They finished 21st last November at state. The Indians are ready to take the next step up to among the top Class 1A teams in this state. Their schedule reflects that tow as they will run twice at Detweiller Park during the regular season where they had not raced in those two meets before. “Summer running has been amazing for most of our top athletes,” said their coach, Bolaji Adeoti. “This is the first time we have started a little earlier and it has gotten most of our top athletes running early and running smart. There has been a lot of focus from our athletes, who are believing in what we are trying to accomplish. We know there are tough challenges ahead but working together early and throughout the summer is one aspect that we know can help come October and November.”

Wyatt Miller is one of the many runners to keep an eye on this season. Miller entering his senior year could have a goal to do some bug things. One of them could be finishing in the top 25 to help his team. Max Cryer should close the gap on Miller. The two were separated by 21 seconds. Cryer running closer to Miller would be a plus. “Wyatt is a tremendous athlete and a great leader. He has led by example by being at every practice and doing extra to better his teammates. He is hungry to do something special this year and has worked hard this summer to work towards achieving his goals. I am extremely proud of how much he has grown as a person, as well as all of the accomplishments he’s had so far,” Adeoti said. “Max is another athlete that has been right along in training with Wyatt. Max was one of our top distance runners during the track season and has maintained high focus throughout the summer so far. I am excited for his development for the remainder of the summer going into the beginning of the season.”

Dayton Beatty is back and is a solid third runner for this team. Joseth Hernandez was the team’s fourth runner last fall. He transferred to IMSA this fall. It could be a big loss for their team. Alex Walsh could step into the top five as a freshman. Cross Country newcomer Joshua Schaefers had a good track season and could also step up along with Hudson Wills, and Travis Kellogg, and Miles Corder having state meet experience. “One thing that impressed me the most about the team’s training this summer was the consistency,” said Adeoti. “Most of the core athletes really met together 3-4 times a week to run and also did their run on the days they are not meeting together. The consistency brought the team closer as a group, which results in athletes having a fantastic summer training experience. There was focus on each session of the practice.”

I would not write off this team to finish in the top five placer in the state. The mystery of the two newcomers will be answered early this season, especially when they go to Peoria on September 11. Miller and maybe Cryer could be close to the top 25. The split from their third through fifth runners needs to improve for this team to jump closer to the front. It was 66 seconds in last year’s state meet. “There hasn’t been a major secret to our success, we just have a lot of athletes that are starting to believe in their abilities to be great and also buy into the program,” added Adeoti. “Athletes are seeing the result of their hard work and dedication and continue to want to be part of history in the making. We talk a lot about the team aspect and how we need to look out for each other and build each other up and when that happens, we will continue to see success.”

12 Freeburg

Coach – Carl Florczyk; 2021 Finish – 26th, 1A State

Top Runners – Josh LaChance SR (62, 16:11), Evan Schlichting JR (168, 17:04), Colin Van Pelt SR (188, 17:15), Lawrence Somosa SO (200, 27:27), Daniel Obernuefemann SR (221, 17:49), Aquiles Somosa SR, Michael Cooper JR, Aidan Parrish JR, Caden McCullough SO, Zach Duffie FR,  Mark Rozhon FR

Notes – Here is another team that is ready to take the next step up. The Midgets finished 26 in last year’s state meet. They may fly under the radar by some especially return five of last year’s top six. “I felt like our team had a great summer of training.  We really focused on consistency with our running and pre-run/post-run work,” said Freeburg coach, Carl Florczyk. “I think our core group of returning guys as a whole are all going to show improvement. Many of our guys ran track in the spring and consistently trained throughout the season.”

The one runner to keep an eye on is Josh LaChance who was the team’s top runner most of last year including state. “He had a strong track season and consistently trained throughout the summer,” Florczyk said.  “I am excited for him to see what he can do this fall.” The determination of success for this team will be how they execute the discipline of their pack running. The split on last year’s team at state from their second through fifth runners was 38 seconds. Evan Schlichting, Colin Van Pelt, Lawrence Somosa, and  Daniel Obernuefemann will need to stay within 35 seconds of LaChance for good things for the Midgets. Florczyk believes that freshmen Zach Duffie and Mark Rozhon could give this team a boost in their top five.

“I like the work ethic and the dedication of our team,” added Florczyk. “They are totally bought in. I think last year's state meet experience has motivated them for this season and made them hungry for more.”

13 Arthur-Lovington

Coach – Lyle Dorjahn; 2021 Finish – 2nd, 1A State

Top Runners -  Logan Beckmier SR (13, 15:20), Jacob Adcock SR (45, 15:54), Lyle Adcock SR (47, 15:58), Jesus Corona JR (204, 17:30), Steven Edwards SR (258, 19:36), Connor Edmonds SR, Caden Binder SO, Nathan Cogdil JR

Notes – This team was one of the dominant squads in Class 1A most of last year. That showed in the state series when they finished second. They are starting in this position to start the year because they need to discover who will step into the fourth and fifth spots. The Knights had a solid first four runners last fall that took them to second at state. There was a drop of close to 45 seconds before their fifth runner crossed the line at Detweiller Park. Second runner from last year Jace Green and fifth runner Jacob Duzan have graduated. The split could be wider from the third to fourth runners. There is opportunity for some runners to step in.

“The guys have gained a certain level of confidence from last years’ experience. They expect themselves to be highly competitive wherever we go,” said their coach, Lyle Dorjahn. “I've noticed that they are more self-motivated. They know what's expected to get where they want to go. With the 4 seniors, there's no secrets. They know the routine.”

Logan Beckmier stepped to the #1 spot for this team last fall finishing in the top 15 at Peoria. He is a top 10 runner for sure. How high up he goes is something we will find out this fall. Jacob and Lyle Adcock are interchangeable in the second and third spots for this team. They have showed improvement this summer. A top 25 finish is not out of the question.

Three in the top 25 would be great for this team. The key is what hind of gap there will be between these three and then the pack. Connor Edmonds and Caden Binder had great improvement this summer and look to be the runners to watch for in those spots. Jesus Corona and Steven Edwards have state meet experience will also challenge. The split after the first three could be close to 90 seconds this fall with their fourth and fifth runners closer together. The gap between four and five last year was 45 seconds. That is the number that this team will need to have cutting the distance down from 90 seconds. That kind of split puts the Knights once again back in the trophy conversation.

14 Port Byron (Riverdale)

Coach – Kevin Claus; 2021 Finish – 11th, 1A State

Top Runners – Tommy Murray SR (9, 15:17), Landis Musser SR (24, 15:33), Peyton Sand SR (108, 16:34), Cael Hinde JR (208, 17:35), Mitchell Hasenour SR (229, 17:59),  Gage Gaulrapp JR, Caleb Bollinger SR, Silas Peschang SO, Andy Murray SO

Notes – The Rams had their best finish at state since this program was revived in 2019. Riverdale finished ninth in last year’s final returning five runners. Two of the runners that are back were all-state. “This has been the best summer we’ve had since reviving the program in 2019,” said their coach, Kevin Claus. “Everybody slightly increased their mileage from last summer and seem to be feeling good heading into the first week of practice.”

Tommy Murray will be one of the elite runners in Class 1A after finishing ninth in 2021. His all-state performances on the track in the 3200 Meter Run and especially in the 1600 Meter Run are evidence of that. “Tommy is tremendously balanced, incredibly disciplined, and genuinely uplifts and supports everybody on the team,” said Claus. “He’s been a true inspiration to me, our team, and our community the last three years and it’s been awesome to see how his hard work has translated to individual and team success. Tommy had an awesome summer of running and we’re excited to see where his preparation leads him.” Landis Musser will also take a step up in his running this season after finishing 24th last year at state. “Landis’s work ethic is unmatched, and he’s got a fire for success,” added Klaus. “He’s a vocal, instructional leader and dependable teammate. I’m a bit of a pushover when it comes to some of the little things we could be doing as a team, so having Landis there to help me enforce things is something I’ve always appreciated. This summer he embraced more of a distance lifestyle for the first time and put in some really consistent weeks of training.”

Peyton Sand will lead the pack behind the two all-state runners. He was 60 seconds behind Musser in Peoria. That split needs to come down. The loss of their fourth and fifth runners to graduation will factor in to whether this team finishes in the top 10 or not. Cael Hinde and Mitchell Hasenour will step in. Another 60 second gap between Sand and these two runners will need to be addressed. “I have been impressed with the consistency and togetherness,” said Klaus. “Everybody held each other accountable, which made doing what we needed to do a little easier. Everybody seems really connected and supportive of one another; that’s what I’m most proud of.”

15 Benton

Coach – Brent McLain; 2021 Finish – 7th, 1A State

Top Runners – Gavin Genisio JR (6, 14:46), Gabe McLain SO (75, 16:20), Mason Tieffel JR (93, 16:27), Cole Buchanan SO (142, 16:50), Parker Johnson SO (248, 18:32), Seager Sanchez FR, Ty Buntin SO

Notes – The Rangers have big thoughts in their mind for the upcoming 2022 season. They did finish seventh in last year’s state meet. This team could be in the mid-teens this year or in the top 10. Benton lost last year’s second runner and sixth runners to graduation.

It is nice to start your top seven with someone like Gavin Genisio. The junior bounced back in track earning all-state honors in the 2A 800 Meter Run and 1600 Meter Run. He emerged last year as the top miler in the state. The future is bright for this young man. We will see a continuation of his success this fall.

Gabe McLain, Mason Tieffel, and Cole Buchanan will all challenge for the second position in their top five. Seager Sanchez enters high school with also a chance to push this top five according to coach Brent McLain. Parker Johnson and Ty Buntin could also contribute in the top seven.

Forget about trying to follow this team’s top five split. It will be huge especially with Genisio up front collecting low numbers. The next four runners are capable of running a 30 second split on the group. A key is moving that pack closer to the front in races culminating in the pack starting around 40th at the state meet.

16 Tuscola

Coach – Neal Garrison; 2021 Finish – 7th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Jackson Barrett JR (55, 16:07), Josiah Hortin JR (59, 16:10), Will Foltz JR, Bryce Graves JR, Mason Veach SR, Andrew Spillman SO, Brady Urban SR, Blake McLeese FR

Notes – Neal Garrison enters as the new coach at Tuscola. He comes from Mahomet-Seymour where he coached two teams to state titles along with coaching a runner who won the individual state title. Garrison inherits a good group back from the team that just missed qualifying of state finishing seventh in their sectional. The team numbers are down this season. But this group could make it to state if they can stay healthy. “Our team qualified for the Sectional last year, but just missed qualifying for State,” said Garrison. “They lost a significant amount of their team due to graduation. Losing the depth of the team will be hard to replace in both practices and meets. Tuscola is in a Regional and Sectional filled with many of the stronger single A teams in the State each year. Realistically it will be tough to beat any of these strong programs to be able to qualify for Sectional or State. Our runners have made it their goal to qualify for the Sectional meet this year.”

They could go higher than state last year especially with Josiah Hortin and Jackson Barrett leading their team up front. Both ran at Peoria last November with Barrett ahead of Hortin by just three seconds. A new season brings big opportunities for these two runners. “Not to treat Josiah and Jackson as the same person, but I believe their past and future success in XC and track are very intertwined,” added Garrison. “ Both have relied on each other as training partners and racing partners in the past. They appear to be the most likely runners to lead our team in meets physically. Josiah and Jackson are also great leaders for our team in shaping the team's standards and character. They enjoy running and are disciplined in their running.” Both runners have showed enough improvement where they could both finish in the top 25.

Will Foltz stepped up his training this summer running with Barrett and Hortin in workouts. Foltz finished 23 seconds behind Garrett in the sectional. A repeat this fall in those performances could get him closer to that top two pack. Bryce Groves and Mason Veach will round out the team’s top five. Just like Foltz is getting closer to the front two, they will need to see these two runners close the gap on the top three.

“This year, I have a goal to get all of my runners to leave the season learning to really love running for running sake,” said Garrison. “I would also love to see each of our runners improve from last year. I would like to use this season to really get to know my runners and I am more focused on next season (the 2023-24 season).”

17 El Paso-Gridley

Coach – Michael Melick; 2021 Finish – 25th, 1A State

Top Runners – Dean Witzig JR (150, 16:55), Sam Bushert SR (160, 17:01), Payton Romersberger SR (172, 17:06), Lukas Holderby JR (176, 17:09), Reed Newcomb JR (210, 17:38), Pierson Romersberger SO (211, 17:39), Nicholas Harston JR, Kole Rigsby JR, Isaac Porzelius SO

Notes – The Titans should improve on last year's 25th place finish at state. Six of the top seven from state, and 12 of the top 13 last year were underclassmen. The team has depth which could show in races this fall. “This was our program's best summer yet as far as depth,” said Coach Michael Melick. “We've had individuals put in better summers, but never have we had the team mileage that we saw this summer.  That being said, we're talking seven guys logging 250-300 miles, nothing compared to some of the bigger mileage programs.

The one thing that I liked about this team last year was their pack running. Their split in the top five at state was only 14 seconds. The one thing that will be improved is that their pack started too far back. Dean Witzig led the team but finished 150th in Peoria. “Dean is a man of many talents,” added Melick. “He can craft skateboards, restore vintage bicycles, and pursue any artistic talent that strikes his fancy.  He has a good sense of humor and is a creative student.  He throws too many acorns at the beginning of practice, but we are working on that.  As far as running, he's got a long stride and we are working on getting his stride rate up and more muscle to move those limbs faster.  He has a lot of potential and has proven pretty durable.” Sam Bushert had a great season and looks to run better than he did a year ago. Payton and Pierson Romersberger, Lukas Holderby, and Reed Newcomb continue to improve. Melick believes that Issac Porzelius and Kole Rigsby’s improvement this summer could put t them challenging for top five spots.

“Our guys team is bonding unlike any team I've coached in my 18 years,” added Melick. “They arranged a captain-led training camp during no-contact week without any input from me.  They've gone on kayaking trips, lake swims, fishing trips, and other activities that I don't even know about simply because they like being around each other.  They are committed to one another, and I'm stoked to see how far their commitment to one another will carry them this season.  This boys team is bigger than any individual and that is a beautiful place to start a season.  We are going to have a lot of fun and PRs this fall.”

18 Niles (Northridge Prep)

Coach – Mike Egle; 2021 Finish – 14th, 1A State

Top Runners – Max Elder SR (71, 16:18), CJ Pronek JR (118, 16:42), John Kipp JR (137, 16:50), Joey Carney SR (155, 16:57), James Barder SO (209, 17:36), Tommy Hansen SO (236, 18:06), Brady Hatoka JR, Brian Kane SR, Brennan McNamara JR

Notes – The Knights will start here. Don’t be surprised if they finish this fall in the top 10. Coach Mike Egle feels that this might be his most talented team that he has ever had.

Northridge Prep lost their #1 runner to graduation but return the rest of their top seven. Max Elder continues to improve and could among the state’s top 25 by season’s end. There is a strong pack behind Elder led by CJ Pronek, John Kipp, and Joey Carney that will be able to stay within 20 to 25 seconds of Elder. Brady Hatoka was the top runner on Egle’s JV squad last fall. He has elevated his training this summer and could be among the top five. James Barder and Tommy Hansen will also challenge for top five spots.

This team could be in the top 10 depending on the improvement of this group in races. Elder will be going after low numbers in front. The pack needs to stay to their leader while staying 35 to 40 within each other.

19 Aurora (Central Catholic)

Coach – Troy Kerber; 2021 Finish – 10th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – James Stolfe SR (57, 16:09), Armando Acosta SR (173, 17:07), Patrick Hilby JR, Mark Dutkanyach SR, Kevin Lilliwitz JR, David Valencia SO, Zach Gates SR, Jacob Gay JR, Matthew Dean SR

Notes – The Chargers could be one of those teams that missed qualifying for state last year but will catapult into the top six at sectionals this fall. Aurora Central Catholic qualified two individual runners to state and return their entire top seven.

James Stolfe had a solid junior season resulting in a 57 place finish in Peoria. He will be closer to the top 25 this fall. Armando Acosta was between 30 to 35 seconds behind Stolfe during the season but fell a little farther back at state. Both give this team a solid 1-2 in the front.

Patrick Hilby had a great track season that included all-state performances in both the 400 Meter Run and 800 Meter Run. He has played football in his first two years of high school. He did run in the regional and sectional races where he was the third runner. No football this fall for Hilby as he will concentrate on this sport. He could step into the #1 spot especially running during the summer and then fall.

David Valencia, Kevin Lilliwitz, and Zach Gates all will challenge for top five spots. It will be interesting to see how this team develops during the season especially with Hilby running.

20 Elmwood

Coach – Gregg Meyers; 2021 Finish – 17th, 1A State

Top Runners – Isaiah Hill JR (65, 16:12), Brendan Williams SR (174, 17:07), Mika Nelson SO (206, 17:31), J Hampton SO (223, 17:50), LJ Higgs JR, Reed Florey SO, Mason Siegel JR, Aiden Faulkner FR, Garrett Webster FR, Kam Stevenson FR

Notes – This team will be young with four runners back from the state team that finished 17th. “We are young, but we were able to build a good base for the upcoming season,” said their coach, Gregg Meyers. “Reed Florey and Mika Nelson showed good growth going into their sophomore seasons.”

Isaiah Hill steps into the #1 spot for this team replacing all-state Thomas Harmon who has graduated. The knowledge that he learned from Harmon the past two years running with him will pay off this fall. Brendan Williams will be the team’s #2 runner and should be within 30 seconds of Hill. “Both Isaiah and Brendan  had very good track seasons and have had consistent summers,” Meyers said. “Isaiah has done a great job this season and I am anxious to see what he can do this fall. He should have a shot at all-state.” It will take a little while how good this team can be especially with the youth that this roster. Florey and Nelson should lead the pack behind Hill and Williams. Don’t be surprised if freshmen Aiden Faulkner, Garrett Webster, and Kam Stevenson ;and in the top five by mid-October. “I am continued to be impressed by this team’s consistency,” said Meyers. “I know it sounds boring but Nothing good can happen unless you show up every day and get the work done and this group has done that. I know there are teams with more talent, but I know I will have fun coaching this team. I am excited to see where we finish this season.”

21 Pontiac

Coach – Mike Lucas; 2021 Finish – 9th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – Aidan Lee JR (41, 15:52), Cam Fenton SO, Jaxen Paine JR, Jake Dewald SO, Fernando Daily JR, Tyler Hanson SO, Aiden Christenson JR, Logan McCabe FR

Notes – This team I could see as a top 10 team in 2023. They are making steps up the progression ladder that could put them in this position. It is doubtful that any seniors will be in the top seven. This is a talented group that finished 9 last fall at the Lisle Sectional. A trip to state is a possibility in 2022. “I was pleased with our summer training,” said their coach, Mike Lucas. “Guys commented that it was more rigorous than previously. I think I just did a better job holding them to proper pacing. We did not run more miles than summer of 2021.”

Aidan Lee showed big improvements in his running last fall finishing 41st at state as a sophomore. I think he is on the brink of discovering on how good he can be. “Aidan Lee is a naturally talented runner who is willing to run uncomfortable,” said Lucas. “I feel he does not experience the gains other runners do during track season because he suffers from terrible blisters which impact his training consistency. Aidan had a really solid summer. He finished at 15:52 last year and I feel if healthy all season he can drop below 15:30 this year in November at Detweiller.”

Cam Fenton and Jaxsen Paine will lead the pack behind Lee. Fernando Daily had a great summer of training and will give the team a boost in the top five. The split on Lee might be over 60 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack. The returning next three split was near 30 seconds. Knowing the split will be big between one and two, keeping the next four runners close to each other will be a plus. “Missing state last year was difficult. Typing in an email that had we been placed in the Oregon Sectional instead of Lisle ( we were clearly outgunned at Lisle) we advance sounds like sour grapes but based upon times it seems accurate. With that being said having a team that is still overall young- three juniors two sophomores and a freshman make up my top 6 - we have chosen to spend most of the summer minutes talking about Regionals,” said Lucas. “The boys know they are talented enough to run in November and want to earn a top 25 ranking during the season but starting with contending for a Regional title has been our summer driving force.”

22 Pinckneyville

Coach – Ryan Bruns; 2021 Finish – 9th, 1A State

Top Runners – Isaac Teel JR (5, 14:45), Dawson Chaney SR (84, 16:24), Noah Bledsoe JR (201, 17:28), Landen Carter SO (259, 19:41), Andrew Wagner SR, Chad Lynch SO, Will Forbes JR, Landen Boman FR, Brendan Conway FR, Brody Wilt, Christian Queen FR

Notes – This could be different this fall for the Panthers after finishing ninth at state. Graduation hit this team hard but the talent iis there to make a repeat appearance. “We had a nice summer.  Numbers are down, and my boys are really young,” said their coach, Ryan Bruns. “I think the biggest thing from state last year was finishing the season. We had never really ran well as a team, and I think we did as well as we possible could last year.”

It helps is that your top runner coming back is the returning state champion at 1600-meters. Isaac Teel had a sensational sophomore season first finishing fifth last fall at Detweiller and then winning the 1A 1600 Meter Run this spring. He showed again he is serious running 14:45 to win Detweiller at Dark. It was the same time that he ran last November. “Isaac is Isaac and does what he does,” Bruns said. “He has been all over his training paces and hammering out what is thrown his way.  Seeing him at Detweiler at Dark was pretty nice.  He is our leader, and the younger runners are trying to step up.”

Dawson Chaney has the state meet experience and should be the team’s second runner with Landen Carter, Landen Boman, Noah Bledsoe, and Brendan Conway vying for top five positions. Peel will be getting low numbers for his team. We could see growth pains during the first month of the season. That could lead to big things by the time we get to the state series.

23 Sterling (Newman Central Catholic)

Coach – Patrick Warkins; 2021 Finish – 24th, 1A State

Top Runners – Lucas Simpson JR (120, 16:43), Lucas Schaab JR (140, 16:50), Ken Boesen SR (178, 17:09), Carver Grummert JR (195, 17:21), Espen Hammes JR (250, 18:38), Zachery DeForest SO, Wyatt Widolf SO, Maxwell DeForest SR, Zion Fiorini SO

Notes – Newman Catholic lives and dies off their pack running. Last year they lived off it qualifying for state finishing 24th. This team should again be in the top six in their sectional as they return five runners.

Lucas Simpson should again be the top runner for the Comets. He had a big end to the track season anchoring his team to fourth in the 4x800m Relay. That confidence should carry over to this fall. “Lucas has had a good summer and I expect good things from him this fall,” said his coach, Patrick Warkins. “I believe his performance at the state track meet greatly boosted his confidence. He realizes he can run with these guys near the top”

With two runners graduated from the top seven, work will need to be done on strengthen their top five. Their top five split last year at state was 38 seconds. Lucas Schaab and Ken Boesen will be the nucleus of the pack.

24 Erie-Prophetstown

Coach – Elizabeth Green; 2021 Finish – 30th, 1A State

Top Runners -  Jacob Gibson JR (181, 17:12), Lucas Dreisbach JR (182, 17:13), Victor Bonnell SO (194, 17:19), Aiden Jepson SO (238, 18:12), Zeke Weidel JR (242, 18:22), Wyatt Goosens SO (246, 18:31), Charlie Link JR, Tyson Skinner JR, Alex Bomleny JR

Notes – The Panthers surprised some people down the stretch last year finishing sixth at the Oregon to qualify for state. They finished 30th the following week. Expectations are there that this team could repeat their journey in 2022. Erie-Prophetstown exhibited an only six second split on Jacob Gibson, Lucas Dreisbach, and Victor Bonnell. All three runners are back hoping to drop their individual times under 17-minutes. The team’s top five split at state was 60 seconds. Moving the pack farther up while minimizing their top five split could increase chances of improving last year’s state performance.

25 Steeleville

Coach – Neal Haertling; 2021 Finish – 27th, 1A State

Top Runners – Cayton Cratch JR 148, 16:53), Clayton Donagher SR (185, 17:14), Camden Pierce JR (198, 17:26), Niklaus Rubach JR (235, 18:05), Evan Reitz SR (243, 18:24), Trenton Ingles SO (254, 19:06), Eli Rushing SR

Notes – Their top runner Christian Rees has graduated but the rest of the Steeleville top seven return from last year’s 27th place state team. Cayton Cratch has a solid sophomore season which should carry over to this year as the #1 runner. Clayton Donagher and Camden Pierce that will lead the pack behind Cratch. The top five split of Rees lead last year was 100 seconds. The projected top five split this fall could be closer to 90 to 95 seconds.

26 Georgetown (Notre Dame de la Salle)

Coach – Jason Lanthier; 2021 Finish – 13th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Andrew Lewis SR, John Brauner SO, George Mackin SR, Marcus Broussard JR, Luke Pedry SR, Raphael Dvorak SR

Notes – This school is new on our radar. The Lions program is now in the seventh year of existence starting in 2017. Last year was the first season that Notre Dame de la Salle competed in the state series. They had a good first season first finishing fourth in the Chrisman Regional and then 13 the following week at the Decatur St. Teresa Sectional. This is the first time ever that this team has appeared in any rankings and first in ILXCTF.com.

They return six of their top seven runners led by Marcus Broussard and George Mackin. John Brauner, Andrew Lewis, Luke Pedry, and Raphael Dvorak will challenge for top five spots. The Lions top five split in their sectional race was 87 seconds. Their split to start the season is projected to be 65 seconds.

27 Herscher

Coach – Rob Grosso; 2021 Finish – 23rd, 1A State

Top Runners – Brayden Shepard SO (146, 16:52), Blaine Dodds SR (177, 17:09), Thomas Morgan JR (214, 17:42), Matthew Benoit SO (232, 18:01), Connor Overacker SR (233, 18:02), Finley Cracco SR, Augie Azzarelli SR, Josh Thorson SO

Notes – Herscher made it to state last year finishing 23 on that first weekend in November. The Tigers lost their top two runners to graduation including four-time state champion Drew Rogers who became the heart and soul of this program. “I think this team learned several very important things from Drew while we were lucky enough to have him representing our school and program,” said their coach, Rob Grosso. “First, that Drew earned everything he accomplished. He never settled, he never sat back and banked on talent carrying him through. He worked his tail off! The kids saw there are no shortcuts, there are no accepting “good enough” to reach the heights that Drew did. Secondly, the team saw how important team performance was to him. He thought about how we could reach our goals constantly and wanted his team setting program records down at Detweiller.”

Brayden Shepard stepped up as a freshman to become the team’s third runner at state. He will start out slow but should be up front some time this season. “Brayden has had a rough summer. He got off to a great start, mileage was ramping up like we wanted but then caught COVID while on a trip south,” said Grosso. “It affected him most of July, but he’s feeling better now and he’s back to putting the work in. He’s so excited to get out there and race. I think he surprised himself a little last fall but gained a lot of confidence as track season went on. He’s a sponge and wants to do what it takes to be his best.” Thomas Morgan has stepped up as the leader on this team. “He went above and beyond from the start this summer,” added Grosso. “He did the leg work to plan runs, reach out to kids to get them to these captain’s practice. He has hosted the team for a camp out and has done a tremendous job reaching out to junior high kids to get them excited about running! Lastly, he has absolutely hit his training plan to perfection this summer.”

This is a team that will surprise some especially without their top two runners graduated. Blaine Dodds and Morgan appear to be the runners that could be the front runners until Shepard is 100%. This will be a packing team that should have their top five split under 60 seconds. “I think what has impressed me the most is how training and doing the “extra stuff” has really brought this team together,” added Grosso. “They are very close, and it is a blast to just sit back and watch these guys having a great time together. When work is fun, their success can be great.”

28 – West Chicago (Wheaton Academy)

Coach – Chris Felinski; 2021 Finish – 15th, 1A State

Top Runners – Shaymis Powell JR (165, 17:03), Joshua Strzalka SR (193, 17:18), Joseph Urban JR (212, 17:41), Zeke Thelen SR, Will Anliker SR, Simeon Gabriel SO, Mateo Noguera-Montoya JR, Will Hopke JR, Toby Morden FR, Luke Osterholm FR, TJ Sias FR, Alex Bounds FR

Notes – Graduation hit this team hard this past off season with four of last year’s top five gone. It could be tough for Wheaton Academy to approach last year’s state finish. There is enough talent where they could get close to a sectional top six finish. “We had a strong summer of training, great commitment from the boys who were in town, put on the miles running together and growing team community,” said Coach Chris Felinski.

Shaymis Powell is the lone runner from that top five. He will step up into their #1 runner spot. “Shaymis has grown through a growth spurt and grown a couple of inches over the past month,” said Felinski.  “He is someone who has potential to be the #1 runner and fill in where his brother was last year (Sheldon graduated and will be attending COD this semester).  He has big goals in terms of wanting to be in the low 16’s this year."

Joshua Strzalka and Joseph Urban will bolster a top five that figures to have a split of near 55 seconds to start the season. Felinski has a good freshman class entering the team. Four runners led by Toby Morden will have some kind of an impact this season. “I don’t have any data, but one of the things that I absolutely enjoyed seeing was how the freshman have been integrated into the community here,” added Felinski. “The top two freshman who have been out, Toby Morden and Luke Osterholm, have been running consistently with the varsity group.”

29 Kankakee (McNamara)

Coach – Haven Provost; 2021 Finish – 8th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – Christian Provost JR, Carter Heinrich SR, Sam Munsterman JR, Bladimir Lopez JR, David Quigley SO, Kolton Hunt SR

Notes – The Irish just missed the state meet last year finishing eighth at the Lisle Regional. They did not advance any runners to Peoria in that sectional. They will also be without their top runner Chase Provost who graduated. Christian Provost and Carter Heinrich give the Irish a solid 1-2 in the front. The team will need to look at their top five split at the beginning of the year for the Irish to improve on their 2021 finish. Right now, it is projected to be close to two minutes.

30 Fairbury (Prairie Central)

Coach – Clay Pinkham; 2021 Finish – 15th, 1A Elmwood Sectional

Top Runners -  Alexander Kaufman JR, Caleb Decker SR, Grant Fogarty SR, Gabe Jones SR, Cole Zimmerman JR, Tyler Farrell SR, Josh Razo JR

Notes – Clay Pinkham steps into the role as new coach for this program. He will have seven of the eight top runners back from last year’s sectional. The Hawks will look to improve on last year’s 15 place finish in the tough Elmwood Sectional. Alexander Kaufman stepped up to be the team’s #1 runner in the regional and sectional meets. Grant Fogarty and Caleb Decker lead the pack behind Kaufman that are projected to have a top five split between 90 to 95 seconds.

Teams to Watch (In Alphabetical Order)

Aledo (Mercer County)

Coach – Peter Nelson; 2021 Finish – 8th, 1A Oregon Sectional

Top Runners – Derek Coulter SR, Lucas Arnold SR, Corbin Sturgill JR, Blair Wilkerson SR, Mason Coulter SO, Jackj McKnight SO, Zach LaRue SR, Carlos Pollock JR

Notes – A team that we could see in Peoria in November. The Golden Eagles return their top seven that finished eighth last year in the Oregon Sectional. The team should have a solid top three with Derek Coulter, Lucas Arnold, and Corbin Sturgill separated by less than 20 seconds. What could hold them back is their gap between three and four which could be close to 80 seconds. Lowering that split could mean good things for Mercer County.

Amboy

Coach – Michael Robinson; 2021 Finish – 22nd, 1A State

Top Runners – Kyler McNinch SR (82, 16:24), Charlie Dickinson SR (215, 17:44), Garrett Pertell SR (222, 17:49), Atticus Horner SO, Kelton Schwamberger SR, Hayden Zacharias SO, Ryan Dickinson SR, Jade Haley SO, Jack Seaing FR, Kaiden Gomez FR

Notes – The Clippers did not finish the season the way the wished for. After finishing third at the Oregon Sectional, Amboy finished 22nd the following week at Detweiller Park. “I think that the team learned that it isn't just enough to get there, but they have to show up when they are there,” said their coach, Michael Robinson. “They wanted to finish better than what they did as a team. I think that put a chip on their shoulder for this season.”

It could be tough getting back to State with four of the top seven runners graduated including their #1 runner Brock Loftus. Kyler McNinch could be the runner that steps in. He improved over the last year and could get close to the top 25. “Kyler has been working really hard this summer,” said Robinson.  He has big shoes to fill with Brock Loftus graduating but I think he is more than up to the task. He has big goals and I think he can achieve them. Charlie Dickinson was more than a minute behind McNinch and will need to close that gap. Their top five split is projected to be just over two minutes. Oregon was not the strongest sectional last fall. Improvement could get this team back to Peoria.

Carlinville

Coach – Charles Helton; 2021 Finish – 13th, 1A Trenton-Wesclin Sectional

Top Runners – Will Meyer JR, Matt Dunn JR, Sam Wilson SO, Tyler Summers JR, Jack Rives JR, Charlie Wilson SR, Hayden Truax SR, Alex Behme SO

Notes – Carlinville will look to improve on last year’s 13th place sectional finish. Six of the top seven runners are back from that team. Will Meyer and Matt Dunn were the top two runners for the team last year as sophomores. The two were separated between 40 to 45 seconds last fall. One thing for this team improving is lowering that split. Sam Wilson is a solid #3 runner for the Cavaliers. This team can be a top 10 sectional team but will have to lower their split for both their top two runners and top five runners.

Elmhurst (Timothy Christian)

Coach - Erica Plaisier; 2021 Finish – 12th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – Tyce Plaisier JR, Ryan McKenzie SO, Luke Hubbard SR, Gio Molina JR, Alex Becker SR, Josh Bemister JR, Rich Meszaros SO, Joseph Miller SR

Notes – The end of  the season was a tale of two teams for Timothy Christian. Their top five in their conference meet was only 34 seconds in which they won. Their sectional meet was different as their top five split was 67 seconds where they finished 12th at Lisle. The good thing is all of their runners from the sectional team is back. The experience from those two races will pay dividends at the end of this season. Five of the projected top seven that are back are underclassmen and led by Tyce Plaisier, Gio Molina, and Ryan McKenzie. If the team does not advance to state, any of these three runners could make the trip individually.

Effingham (St. Anthony)

Coach - JR Elder; 2021 Finish – 19th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Griffen Elder SR (69, 16:16), Julius Ramos FR, Vincent Vogel SO, Conlan Walsh SR, Gio Buccio SR, Noah Flaig SO, James Emmerich JR, Calvin Sudkamp SO

Notes – The Bulldogs should be on the road to improvement after finishing 19 at last fall’s St. Teresa Sectional. Griffen Elder was the team’s runner last fall and was their top runner in a recent time trial. He also qualified for the state meet in both the 3200 Meet Run and 1600 Meter Run. Julius Ramos is only a freshman but was his team’s second runner in that time trial. Vincent Vogel leads the pack behind these two runners.

“All of our runners improved over the summer,” said their coach, JT Elder. ”We are certainly excited about our new additions in Julius Ramos, Noah Flaig, Vincent Vogel, and James Emmerich. These underclassmen have great potential and have been working hard this summer. Our seniors are key to this year’s success. Sam Deters, Nick Wiedman and Max Sager will all be competing for a top 7 spot. Conlin Walsh, Giovanni Bucco and Griffen Elder will be key runners to score for the team. All three had great Track Seasons. They all participated at the state meet in a relay or individually.”

Fairfield

Coach – Justin Sanders; 2021 Finish – 16th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Jonathan Paul SR, Chase Smith SR, Griffen Hinkle SR, Nathan Legg SO, Grant Jennette FR, James Walker FR.

Notes – This team lost four runners from their top seven and none were via graduation. Foreign exchange students Diego Diaz and Sander Holm returned to their home country. Brenan Yingst transferred, and Trenton Rutherford opted not to run this fall. It will take some rebuilding for the Mules to get back to the sectional meet. Jonathan Paul and Chase Smith move up to be the top runners on this team. Freshmen Grant Jennette and James Walker who should be in top seven spots. “Nathan Legg (So) is looking very strong to begin the season,” said their coach Justin Sanders.  “He immediately wanted to be moved up with the varsity runners from last year’s team. He will make a strong top 5 runner for me this season and will likely push for 3rd spot.  Chase Smith is coming off a great track season. Last XC season he was just returning from major knee surgery and therefore never reached his full potential. Jonathon Paul has been my most dedicated of my returning runners. He has logged miles all summer and is ready for a great year.”

Heyworth

Coach - Eric Updegraff; 2021 Finish – 12th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Alex Maas JR (107, 16:33), Braden Denning SR, Alex Dalhauser JR, Aven Johnson JR, Austin Russow SR, Etan Trask SR, Nathaniel Roehring

Notes – Heyworth will look to improve on their 12 place finish in last year’s St. Teresa Sectional returning six runners. A big addition is Braden Denning who ran cross-country is freshman year. “Braden rejoined the team this season after an excellent track & field season (He was a part of our state qualifying 4x800m team),” said his coach, Eric Updegraff. “He last ran for our team as a freshman. Braden will have a huge impact on our varsity team this season after an excellent summer.”

The team’s top runner is Alex Maas who qualified for the state meet as an individual. “After a breakthrough sophomore cross season (all-conference, state qualifier, 16:34 at state), an excellent sophomore track & field season (state qualifier 4x800, PRs of 2:08 in the 800, 4:48 in the 1600), and a fantastic summer of training, Alex is fired up and primed to take the next step this season,” said Updegraff. “While his main goal this season is to help his team qualify for the state meet for the first time since 2011, don't be surprised to see make another huge jump in the individual standings as well.

The addition of Denning could take this team to the top eight in their sectional. Anything can happen in that race. The top five split off Maas could be close to 95 seconds. Their second through fifth splits will be near 30 to 35 seconds.

Joliet (Catholic Academy)

Coach – Jason Midlock; 2021 Finish – 7th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – Nathan Ciarlette JR, Phillip Broderick SO, Lucas Furlane SO, Tristan Paul JR, Jake Conn SR, Jack Oswalt JR, Colin Murphy SO

Notes – It could be a rebuilding season for Joliet Catholic after just missing state finishing seventh at the Lisle Sectional. The lose their top three runners. Their top two who qualified for state graduated. Their third runner Matthew Naughton transferred to Plainfield Central. “We had a good summer of training,” said Coach Jason Midlock. We have some younger runners that are getting some consistent training in. It will be fun to see how they gain experience and progress through the year.”

Nathan Ciarlette has showed improvement from last year even competing in wrestling and track and field in the meanwhile. He applied that mental toughness to his training according to Midlock. Phillip Broderick should step in as the #2 runner.

Nashville

Coach - Jennifer Olson; 2021 Finish – 8th, 1A Trenton-Wesclin Sectional

Top Runners – Brayden Hunter JR (133, 16:48), Petey Geppert SR, Evan Eberhart SO, Brody Meyer SR, Silas Hill JR, Noah Szopinski JR, Marcus Bartolotta SO

Notes – Nashville just missed qualifying for state finishing eight in the sectional at Trenton-Wesclin. Brayden Hunter did make it to state an individual and will look forward to repeating that trip. Hopefully, it will be with his teammates. Petey Geppert and Evan Eberhart will lead a pack that will need to stay 50 seconds of each other. The split from the pack to Hunter could be close to 75 seconds.

Petersburg (PORTA)

Coach - Jacob Wooldridge; 2021 Finish – 8th, 1A Elmwood Sectional

Top Runners – Haven Gronewold JR, Quincy Stuhmer JR, Daxton Trueblood JR, Bryce Sonnemaker SO, Camren McCoy JR, Justin Zimmerman FR, Kade Parker FR

Notes – This team was close to qualifying for state last finishing eighth last year at Elmwood. Even though graduation tool three of their top seven, it would not surprise me if the Bluejays qualify as a team for Peoria. It is a young team with some good freshman coming in that should contribute immediately. “We were doing pretty good as far as a team training perspective as we typically had 10 or 11 of the 14 boys showing up until mid-July,” said Wooldridge. “We had a lot of our runners gone for family vacations or summer work hours changed so the last three weeks weren’t quite as consistent but still overall I feel pretty good about how we trained this summer. Our top group got long runs in of 8+ and handled them very well, as well as a good chunk of the team was able to participate at the Scholastic 5K challenge at lake Springfield at the end of June, in which PORTA took 3rd as a team only behind Glenwood (Chatham) and Springfield High.

Haven Gronewold just missed qualifying as an induvial last year for state finishing 24th. Big things should be ahead for this junior. “Haven is going to be a man on a mission this fall. Haven has been pushing himself with the goal to log 500 summer miles ran, which he started the day after taking 13th in the 1A 3200m finals at the State Track Meet,” said Wooldridge.  “Haven was the first individual not to qualify as an individual out of Elmwood last October, as he unfortunately really struggled on a muddy course and only ran a 17:13, when he had run as fast as the 16:30s range previously. That really lit a fire in him to not be left out of the state meet again this fall, regardless of where the team finishes. I will be shocked if he missed out and did not qualify for the state meet again this year.” Daxton Trueblood and Quincy Stuhmer ramped up their mileage this summer with the fruits of their labor showing up this fall in races. Bryce Sonnemaker has also stepped up and should be in the top five. Justin Zimmerman and Kade Parker are part of a good freshman group. The two frosh runners should make an immediate impact in the top five.

Pleasant Plains

Coach – Derek DeBarr; 2021 Finish – 9th, 1A Elmwood Sectional

Top Runners – Jack Willenbourg JR (83, 16:24), Zach Powell SR, Cole Payne SO, Hunter Tabb SR, Jacob Crater SO, Kamden Kowalenko SO, Nathan Dahl SR, Etan Griminger SO, Elijah Teefey FR

Notes – This team will sneak up some this fall. They are better than last year when they finished eighth at the Elmwood Sectional. Five runners are back from that sectional team including Jack Willenbour who ran in the state meet as individual finishing 83rd. “Jack had a rough offseason,” said his coach, Derek DeBarr. “He found out he was running with an avulsion fracture and did not run much all summer.  He had to resort to cross training, and he put in a tremendous amount of time aqua jogging and biking but has only been running for about three weeks. He did manage to be about 90 seconds faster than he was at this point last year at the Detweiller at Dark, and only 20 seconds slower than his FTTF race last year, and his opening 1600 time trial puts his fitness at where he was during the indoor track season.  He is aerobically very fit, but he has not had any anaerobic work yet.”

This team will still have strength up front which includes Zach Powell and Cole Payne. Nathan Dahl is returning to the team after a year away from the team. He ran strong last spring during track. He could be a good addition in the top five. Freshman Elijah Teefey also figures to challenge for a spot in the top five. “Our summer training went well,” added DeBarr. “ 6/7 returning runners were 11 seconds or faster on our first day 1600 time trial than at this stage last year.  We had 5 runners 11 seconds faster than our second fastest time trial finisher last year, and a 6th was within one second of being our second fastest last year, so we have improved from this point last year considerably and have much more depth.”

Shelbyville

Coach – Levi Preumer; 2021 Finish – 12th, 1A State

Top Runners – Calvin Miller SR (48, 15:58), Bo Hilbert SR (187, 17:15), Luke Brewer JR (205, 17:31), Izik Hood JR, Griffin Schuricht SR

Notes – This was a rocky summer for Shelbyville starting after the state track meet. Coach Chris Mosley was replaced by Levi Preumer as the new coach. This will be a transition season for the Rams as they adapt to a new coach and his training schedules. Only three of last year’s top seven are back from that team. Calvin Miller led the team at state finishing 48th while the team finished 12th. Miller has a good chance to qualify for the state meet. It could be tough for this team to get back to the sectional meet. Four of their top five runners have graduated.

Stanford (Olympia)

Coach - Brendan Hoskins; 2021 Finish – 8th, 1A State

Top Runners – Logan Demling JR (51, 16:05), Caden Clark JR (141, 16:50), Cooper Phillips SO (230, 17:59), CJ Moore FR, Jacob Lawless JR, Landon Smith SO

Notes – If could be tough for the Spartans to make a return trip to the State Meet. Three of their top four runners from the eighth-place finish. Logan Demling finished 51 and as the team’s second runner. He will lead this team this fall. “Logan will see even more gains from his sophomore year and will have big races come toward the middle to end of the season,” said his coach, Logan Demling. “He will have his work cut out for him to be our top guy and they all love working hard to push one another, so we may see a back and forth in results as the season progresses.”

Caden Clark and Carter Phillips had a good summer of training and will be challenged for the second spot by freshman CJ Moore. The key will be finding a fifth runner that can close to these three. “Freshman C.J. Moore has put in a ton of work coming off his first year running Cross Country as an 8th grader,” said Hoskins. “He is consistently improving at a high rate. Additionally, Caden Clark and Cooper Phillips both showed evidence of large strides being made with strong time trials to start this season.”

Urbana (University)

Coach - Rachael Brewer; 2021 Finish – 10th, 1A St. Teresa Sectional

Top Runners – Kai Schwartz SO, Pieter Duursma SO, Walter Kraatz JR, Rosse Kimme SO, Bruce Tang SO, Kelby Svendsen JR, Matthew Ulozas JR

Notes – It is hard to say which direction this team is going after 10th in last year’s sectional in Decatur. Six runners return from that sectional team. “We had a pretty good turnout for the high school boys this summer but are missing the leadership from our front runner Henry Laufenberg from last season,” said Rachael Brewer. “We will be a young team again this season.”

The leadership could come from Walter Kraatz who has improved over the last school year. It could be Kai Schwartz who ended last year as the team’s second runner. “Kai has been dealing with shin splints since last XC season,” said Brewer. “Unfortunately, he is plagued by them again, so his training has been sporadic. If we can get him healthy he will be a huge benefit to the team, but right now he is struggling to run pain free.” A team without Schwartz could mean it could be tough to repeat last year’s finish. If he does get healthy, do not be surprised if this team qualifies for the State Meet.

Westmont

Coach - Rainy Kaplan; 2021 Finish – 13th, 1A Lisle Sectional

Top Runners – Tim Rosland SR (85, 16:24), Henry O’Connor SR, Kaleb Sica JR, Paul Tikhiy SR, Quentin Jarlson SO, Hamzah Bedeeir SO

Notes – This will be a small team for the Sentinels so staying healthy could be a goal for this team that will look to improve on last fall’s 13th place Lisle Sectional finish. “Summer running was not as productive as we would have hoped,” said their coach, Rainy Kaplan. “We had small numbers that came out for camp. Tim Rosland returns as the team’s top runner again this season. Rosland qualified for state individually finishing 85th. “Tim has very high hopes for his season,” added Kaplan. “He is very determined and has put the time/effort into his running this summer. He is the best I have seen in him and truly anticipate him leading our small team to Peoria in November.”

Williamsville

Coach – Tyler Casson; 2021 Finish – 7th, 1A Elmwood Sectional

Top Runners – Daniel Giacomini SR (53, 16:07), Jonathan Janssen JR, Avery Glasgow SR, James Kennedy SR, Nicholas Donelan SR

Notes – The Bullets just missed making it to state last year finishing seventh at the Elmwood Sectional. It could be tough to better that for Williamsville. They return three of their top four runners. There could be a drop off split-wise after those three. Daniel Giacomini made it to Peoria individually placing 53rd. He qualified for state in the 3200 Meter Run finishing 13. Jonathan Janssen gives the team a solid second runner ahead of teammate Avery Gascow.

Winnebago

Coach – Janet & Joe Erb; 2021 Finish – 12th, 1A Oregon Sectional

Top Runners -  Nicholas Martino SO (70, 16:17), Joseph Erb FR, Cole Thomas JR, Brady Schaller SR, Jonathan Claerbout SR, Nathan Lyons SR

Notes – Watch for this team to improve from last year’s 12 place finish at the Oregon Sectional. Five runners are back from that sectional team led by individual state qualifier Nicholas Martino. The sophomore finished 70th in the state race. He had a better training this summer than last summer,” said Janet Erb. “He is starting this year off at an even better spot than last summer. I’m really proud of the work he has put in” Winnebago’s middle school team finished fifth in the IESA 2A state meet led by Jack Erb’s fifth-place finish. We will get an idea which of their freshman are out for the team in the first few meets of the season.
