2019 IHSA State Cross Country Championships - Class 1A Girls Preview

Lianna Surtz of Rosary finished second last year as a freshman in the Class 2A race. Now that Rosary was moved down to this classification, we could see her win her first state cross country championship and second state title overall. There could be three runners in this first race of the day that could also be under with Surtz. Lydia Roller has a 16:37 season’s best and could challenge for the title after finishing second a year ago. Amelia McLain of Benton finished third in this race last year and is also up for the challenge.

Some of the other runners to watch for include Bailee Fortney of Rock Falls, Mabry Bruhn of Monticello, Ailey Mitchell of Shelbyville, Kate Ahmari of Urbana University, and Anna Perry of Eureka.

The team race should be one to remember. Monticello defeated Winnebago by five points at Amboy almost a month ago. The two teams will face off again with the final margin as close or closer than their first encounter.

Preview – The Sages came on strong the second half of the season and are in position to win a state championship. They have the runners in the front to get them low points with Mabry Bruhn and Rachel Koon. Bruhn has been the team’s #1 runner this season up to last week’s sectional race when Koon finished 21 seconds ahead of Bruhn. That margin has usually been reversed for the two runners in races this fall. Both should be within the top 25 of each other. The key is staying within 15 seconds.

The top 5 split for Monticello last week was 75 seconds. That just might be good enough to get the team win. Grace Talbert, Emma Brown, and Kyra Welter have been interchangeable in the three to five positions. They were within 26 seconds of each other last week. Closing that gap down to 20 seconds and staying within 30 to 35 seconds of Bruhn/Koon could be the difference of winning a state title or just missing the podium.

Preview – Monticello and Winnebago faced each other once this season at Amboy with Monticello having the five point advantage. In that meet, Winnebago was without their top runner Natalia Martino due to testing she was involved in. She will be in the Indians’ lineup looking for a top 10 individual finish.

In their sectional title at Oregon, Martino was 46 seconds ahead of a pack with Marissa Roggensack, Katie Erb, and Kaylee Woolery that came across the line together in almost identical times. That pack needs to repeat that type of effort but stay within 20 seconds of Martino. There was another 46 second gap before Grace Erb finished as the team’s fifth runner. Erb did not run in her regional race. She was the team’s top runner through the Amboy meet. The key is simple for Winnebago. Grace Erb should be within that pack. The team could have two or three all-state runners. Having five runners in the top 45 within 62 seconds of each other could give them the state championship

Preview – This is a team that I would keep a close eye on in this race. The Rockets have finished second the past three meets to Monticello and do have the runners to put themselves in position for a state title. Kylie Decker finished fourth overall at Effingham and does have the potential to finish in the top 15. Keeping their pack under 20 seconds behind Decker will be something to watch for. Caroline Bachert, Evelyn Atkins, and Taylor Joop have been Unity’s second runners in the past three meets. They are interchangeable in that position.

Unity has averaged a 60 second top five split in those final three meets. They will need a similar type of split staying within 52 to 57 seconds. If that happens with Decker and perhaps one more runner in the top 25, Unity will come away from Detweiller Park with a trophy but in what place?

Preview – The Royals, who finished third at Oregon last week, has been quietly waiting for this moment. The team does have the potential to finish among the first three teams. Don’t let the gap between Lianna Surtz and #2 runner Maria Italia fool you. Last week in their sectional run, that margin was just over two minutes. Surtz is the individual favorite in this meet and will be in the 16:20 to 16:30 range. Italia just needs to stay within 90 seconds of Surtz in this race.

What could be concerning is the gap between Surtz and fifth runner Katie Lifka which was four minutes last week. Rosary’s best top 5 split this season was 211 at their conference meet. Getting that margin under 190 seconds will be something to watch. Getting their second through fourth pack within 30 seconds of each other (it was 42 seconds last week) puts this team in good trophy position.

Preview – This team has quietly asserted themselves behind Winnebago coming down the home stretch. The two teams were separated by 34 points in the Oregon Sectional Meet. It could be closer on Saturday with a trophy again a possibility for the Rockets.

Bailee Fortney has been the team’s #1 runner all season and should be among the top five individual runners in this race. Erin Porter should be the team’s second runner with hopes of staying within 65 to 70 seconds of Fortney. Rock Falls ran a five second split between their next four runners at Amboy. It was 59 seconds in that group last week. The Rockets could get another trophy but will need to have a split between 30 to 40 seconds within that group to accomplish that.

Preview – Pack running was the key for the Lady Spartans in their third-place finish last week at Effingham. The top five split was 31 seconds in that race. Jillian Plotner has been their #1 runner in the past three meets. Plotner finished 11th in that race and could be in the top 25 on Saturday. The pack behind was within seven seconds of each other in that race. That could happen again for the Spartans in this race. The key will be position, position, position for success for this team. A similar type of split with Plotner close to the front could mean big things for this team.

2 - 102   17:41 18:00   -19 19:31   -110 20:04   -143 21:00   -199

Preview – What will benefit Eureka in this race is that they will have low numbers in the first two team positions with Anna Perry and Alexi Fogo possibly finishing in the top 10. The two finished 1-2 in the past three meets. Elle Knapp has been a consistant #3 runner for the Hornets. She will just need to be within 90 seconds of Fogo in this race. The three to five runner pack will be the thing to keep an eye on. It has been close to 100 seconds on that group. Keeping that pack within 65 to 70 seconds of each other could mean a top five finish for Eureka.

Preview – Strong pack running has been the difference maker for the Pioneers in their first season in the Class 1A state series. The top five split in winning at Elmwood last week was 37 seconds. The key in this race is moving that pack closer to the front. Ella Bittner or Lyndsey Wolters could be close to a top 25 finish. The key is staying within 40 seconds of each other to get into the top five teams.

Preview – Freshman Kate Ahmari has been the team’s top runner all season. You should see her in the top 10 in this race. The Illineks finished fifth in their sectional at Effingham. They could finish in the top 10 in this meet. Their key last week was having a 25 second split from their second through fifth runners. Erin Smith staying within 90 seconds of the freshman with a similar pack split will be something to keep an eye on.

Preview – The Sabers were one of the surprise teams in the tough East-Central region of the state this fall. After finishing fourth at Elmwood, do not be surprised if this team is among the top 10 teams in Peoria. Fran Hendrickson ends a fabulous career in this meet with a top 15 individual finish a possibility. The team should have an 85 to 90 second top five split in this race.

Preview – Winners of the Lisle Sectional, the Knights enter this meet with the potential of finishing among the top five squads. Carly Manchester has been near the front in all her races this season. A top 10 individual finish is within her reach. The chance of having three all-state runners for this team is possible. Kennedy Calcagno just needs to stay within 30 seconds of Manchester with Frankie Chaidez close to Calcagno. The team’s top five split was at 162 seconds last week but could be close to 140 seconds in this race.

Preview – The key to winning the sectional title on their home course last week was solid front running and a strong pack to accomplish the win. Amelia McLain is one of the elite Class 1A runners that will be in the front chasing after a state championship. Mia Wills and Haley Wallace lead the pack behind McLain. The split on five runners was just under three minutes in last week’s race. Keeping their pack split under 60 seconds will be a key of good things to come for the Rangers on Saturday.

Preview – The Indians finished second behind Benton last week with their normal #1 runner Gabby Alongi as the team’s third runner. Alongi could finish in the top 30 in this meet with Olivia Phillips and Lauren Heape within 10 seconds. The team’s top five split has been hovering around two minutes most of the season. Keeping that split near 100 to 110 seconds could place this team within the top 10 spots at the end of this race.

Preview – A team that could finish among the top 10 teams on Saturday. Caroline Gwaltney should be among the top 20 individuals. Teammate Lexy Henrikson needs to stay with 10 seconds to have all-state honors within her reach. The team had over a three minute split in their fourth-place sectional finish in Elmwood last week. That margin needs to decrease by at least 40 seconds for this team to finish in the top half of the standings.

Preview – I would keep an eye on the Lions in this race. The potential for a top 10 finish is there. Lydia Camp displayed in her appearance at Peoria earlier this year that she could run with the top runners. A top 15 finish (maybe top 10) could be something to watch for from this senior. The team had a 72 second split on their two through five pack led by Eva Camp. That split could be as low as 58 seconds in this race.

Preview – The Royal Lions packed it up last week in their fourth-place Oregon Sectional race with their top three runners within six seconds of each other. Conditions played a part in that pack in that race. That split has normally been within 30 seconds. Renate Toldo and Gracie Kreissler should be the top runners for this team. Their scorers usually are separated by 70 to 75 seconds but has a 34 second split last week. A split under 55 seconds puts this team into the top 15.

PreviewSavanah Beavers is the #1 runner on this team with hopes of finishing in the top 15 individuals in this race. The Spartans lowered their split off Beavers to under three minutes in the past two meets. Closing the gap between Beavers and #2 runner Maddie Litwiller or Anna Bieber to just under 90 seconds would be something to watch for if this team wants to finish among the first 15.

PreviewJanelynn Wirth is having a strong junior season. It would not surprise me if she finishes 15th place or higher in this race. the team had a 73 second split off #2 runner Jennifer Palen in last week’s race. A similar type of race from the Shells keeps this team among the first 20 in Saturday’s race.

A top 20 finish is within the capability of this team especially if senior Lizzy Friedinger finishes among the top 25 individuals. Tremont kept their top five split under 150 seconds in their sectional race. Keeping it lower than 139 seconds could have this team finishing in the top 15.

Preview – This team has been running great since their trip to run at Woodbridge CA this September. Lily Lebo is a runner you should see in the top 40 in this race. Wheaton Academy only had a 15 second split from their second through fifth runners in their sectional race. A repeat of that effort could put this team among the first 20 placing squads.

Preview – The Trojans just made it to Peoria tying for fifth in the Lisle Sectional. Hope Clark is a runner that you could see finish in the top 25. The team’s split needs to go from 116 seconds to under 90 seconds to challenge for a top 20 team spot.

Preview – The Tigers tied for fifth with Timothy Christian last week at Lisle and could surprise some people in this meet. Molly Raymond has the talent and potential to be among the 20 individuals in this state race. Herscher’s top five split at sectionals was 131 seconds but only 31 seconds between two through five. Getting that pack closer to Raymond means a higher team finish.

Preview – Beecher surprised some finishing second at Lisle and could turn some heads in this race. Victoria Fasano should be one of the runners that you should see in the top 30 on Saturday. The team’s pack behind Fasano had a split of only 25 seconds. A repeat of that with Fasano giving her team low numbers in the front could see this team finish in the top 15.

Preview – The Knights finished fifth in the Benton Sectional and will look to finish among the top 20 teams in this meet. Freshman Avery Rahden has been the team’s #1 runner for most of the season. A top 50 individual finish could be in the cards for her. The team kept their top five split under 60 seconds last week. Moving the pack closer to the front will be something to watch for.
