The second race at Detweiller Park is wide-open in both the team and individual race scenarios. The team race has up to five teams that could leave Detweiller Park with the Class 1A State Championship trophy.

The individual race is wide-open with Ryder James of Paxton-Buckley-Loda, Dawson Smith of Rock Falls, Aryan Lalwani and Henry Kraatz of Urbana University, Elias Bergman of Illinois Valley Central, Layton Hall of Arthur-Lovington, Negus Bogard of Robinson, Noah McIntyre of Athens, Drew Rogers of Herscher, Isaiah Ditta of Clifton Central, Charlie Kistner of Stanford Olympia, Miles Sheppard of Hamilton/Warsaw, and Colby Johnson of Deer Creek-Mackinaw.

Preview – The Spartans have been almost perfect this season with the exception of a one point loss to defending Class 1A champion Clifton Central at El Paso-Gridley in early October. This team goes nine runners deep so a last minute substitution will not phase this group. Charlie Kistner has been the team’s #1 runner almost all season and will finish in the top 10 individually.

The key for Olympia was solid pack running last season. It has been not that tight this fall but more than good enough to get the job done. Jon Neville was just two seconds behind Kistner last week and could repeat that on Saturday. Logan Wheeler has been on an average 20 seconds behind Kistner most of the season. That type of finish could get him all-state honors.

The team had only a 44 second split on their top five in last week’s sectional win. If they have three runners in the top 25 with that type of split, Olympia will leave Detweiller Park with a trophy in their hands.

Preview – The one team that could challenge for the state championship are the Sages. Just like Stanford Olympia, Monticello had a 44 second top five split in their sectional win at Effingham. The key will be where that pack will start.

Luke Sokolowski has been the team’s #1 runner and could be among the top 15 individuals on Saturday. Josh Baysore is a solid #2 runner but needs to stay close to Sokolowski for this team to win. The gap was 23 seconds last week. You can expect a close knit group in this race. Monticello had a 34 second split in their conference race, 29 second the last time they ran at Detweiller Park three weeks ago.

It could come down to a team “dual meet” type of race between them and Olympia. The split needs to stay at or under 40 seconds. The Sages will need two runners in the top 25 with one or two runners close to all-state. The state title could be theirs accomplishing those things.

Preview – This is a team that has flown under the radar most of the season. The Comets enter this meet as the defending Class 1A State Champions and could repeat that feat on Saturday.

Isaiah Ditta is a returning all-state runner with hopes of being among the leaders on Saturday. The big plus for Central has been the emergence of Mari Anthony. The senior out for cross country for the first time was jumped into the top three in his first race at El Paso-Gridley. The Comets won that mead ahead of Olympia. He ran with Ditta in their regional meet and was right behind Ditta with Trevor Swanson close by. It is tough to see those three runners within two seconds of each other on Saturday. Three runners in the top 25 is a possibility from that group.

The team had an 87 second split on their top five runners in the sectional race. That is not a huge problem if their top three runners are up in the front. Jared Snejberg has been within 20 seconds of Swanson at some points this season. Watch for their scorers to have a top five split under 75 seconds. Accomplishing that with the low numbers in the front means another state championship for this team.

2 - 92   15:52 16:11   -19 16:13   -21 16:23   -31 16:50   -58

Preview – You never count out Elmwood early in the season. That is their plan to lull you a sleep before they make their strike at the state meet. This is another one of those times for this team.

The Trojans finished second behind Olympia last weekend using a 58 second split on their top five runners led by Luke Hoffmann who could finish in the top 25 at Detweiller Park. Thomas Harmon, who is normally the team’s #2 runner, ran fifth for the squad last week. It would be a good thing if he is within 15 to 20 seconds of Hoffmann in this race. Their top four split was 31 seconds. Their best top five split coming down the stretch was 39 seconds in their regional race. If Harmon can stay close to Blake Rosenbaum, who as the team’s #2 runner in their sectional, then good things could happen for this team with another trophy heading back to Elmwood.

Preview – This could be the dangerous of the five teams that could come away with the state championship. The Lions have flown under the radar all season staying away from the high profiles meets preparing for this Saturday.

Mathew Olech has come on strong all season and could finish in the top 10. The key for this team is the top three pack in the front. Hayden Colclasure and Daniel Winkelman cold be in the top 35 or better. They need to stay within 20 seconds of Olech in this race. The split in their top five runners was 72 seconds last week. It needs to be at or under 61 seconds in this race.

The Lions like to fly under the radar and catch you when you least expect it. They ran in similar fashion in 2016 when they won the Class 1A team title. Saturday could be one of those days for Harvest Christian Academy.

2 - 96   16:06 16:23   -17 17:22   -76 17:29   -83 17:36   -90

Preview – The Illineks are a team that could get close to a trophy in this meet. It starts with their two runners in the front Henry Kraatz and Aryan Lalwani that could finish in the top 10 in this race. The split in their three to five runners last week led by Nicholas Ramkumar was only 14 seconds. Keeping their pack to within 40 seconds of Lalwani/Kraatz could mean big things for this team.

Preview – Don’t be surprised if the Rangers finish in the top five at the end of the day. Sectional champion Reece Johnson is running great at the right time and could finish in the top 15. Their #2 runner Brady Gischer will need to be within 25 seconds of Johnson for good things to happen for this team. The top five split the last two weeks has been hovering just over two minutes. Dropping that split to under 100 seconds puts Benton close to the top five.

Preview – One of those teams that might be among the top five when all is said and done. Colby Johnson will be one of the many individual favorites in this race. Like most other top teams, the pack behind their #1 runner is always the key. The two through five pack only had a 23 second split in their sectional race. The group, led by John Blumeyer, needs to be within 52 seconds of Johnson for great things to happen for this team.

Preview – This team could finish in the top five. At the same time, the Romans could be outside of the top 10. That is how deep this field is. Ryan Hardiman and Akili Parekh are the top two runners and need to stay within 10 seconds of each other. One or both could finish in the top 25. One of the reasons why this team finished in fourth at Lisle last week was that their top five split was 81 seconds. It had been near 60 seconds the past two weeks. A split at or under 58 seconds for this group catapults them close to one of the top five teams.

Preview – A team that could finish near or at 10th. A great race moves them closer to the front. Drew Rogers is their top runner and will be one of the individual favorites in this race. Last week, Wyatt Dohe was the team’s #2 runner 85 seconds behind Rogers. Closing that gap under 75 seconds could be a game-changer for this team as well as a top five split between 108 and 117 seconds could move them up.

Preview – Northridge Prep has gone back and forth with Latin School at the end of this season. They finished just ahead of Herscher and Latin in last week’s sectional race. I would not consider them a surprise team but a team that has the potential to get into the first five. The team ran a 55 second split last week led by Andrew Brockmeier who could finish among the first 20 in this race. Max Elder and Dan Gomez have been within 10 seconds of Brockmeier during the season. Another race like that from those two runners makes this team dangerous.

Zachary Brasel and Brandon Ahring are a solid 2-3 behind Guthrie and will need to stay within 30 seconds of their top runner in this race.

Preview – The Stallions were on NOONE’s radar as the season starts. Here they are now in Peoria with their first trip to state after improbable regional and sectional wins. Ty Reynolds just needs to run the way he has been running all season to finish in the top 25. The emergence of #5 runner Nikolay Bierbaum almost three weeks ago has dropped the team’s top five split from nearly 200 seconds to 99 seconds last week. Who knows what is in store from this team on Saturday? Expect the unexpected from this group.

Nathan DeMarb and Matt Ingalsbe lead the pack that will need to stay within 35 seconds of each under or lower.

Preview – Hard to vision where the Maroons could finish in this race. Their top runner Negus Bogard missed a couple of meets at the end of September and is rounding back into shape. He will be a runner to watch in the front. Bogard was close to 100 seconds ahead of the rest of his team early in the season. The gap was 42 seconds last week. Robinson should be in the top 15 teams but will need a team split under 140 seconds of a healthy Bogard to make that happen.

Preview – The Spartans finished a strong third in last week’s sectional at Effingham. Keeping their top five split at or under 55 seconds will be something to watch for if this team wants to finish in the top 10. Brandon Mattsey has been their top runner all season. It is not unreasonable to think that he could finish in the top 25 in this race. Eric Poe has been a consistant second runner that is within 15 seconds of Mattsey. A two through five split under 28 seconds moves this team up.

Cade Smith along with McKallen Smith were within 10 seconds of Wilkerson. They will need to be that close with Wilkerson in the top 40 for this team to finish among the first 15 squads.

Preview – U-High just mad it to state by six points in finishing fifth at the Lisle Sectional. They have possibilities of two all-state runners with Luke Sikora and Nicky Edwards-Levin capable of finishing in the top 20. The top five split for the team was 89 seconds last week. It has been closer to two minutes in their previous two meets. A split similar to that with Sikora and Edwards-Levin up front could push this team up.

Tony LoPresti and Sam Woody give the team a solid one-two punch in the front. The team’s top five split was at 88 seconds last week. It is normally between 50 to 54 seconds. PreviewJack Cook leads this team that finished fifth last week at Elmwood. We could see Cook finish in the top 25 in this race.  The Hornets have a great pack behind Cook led by Matt Nowatney and Mitchell Danner. Their second through fifth runner pack had a split of 18 seconds in the sectional race. The key is moving that group within 60 seconds of Cook.
