Here is a look at each of the 3A Girls Sectional Meets that took place on June 2 & 3.

3A Minooka Sectional – June 2

Two of the top three teams in Class 3A faced off again Wednesday afternoon at Minooka. Lincoln-Way East won for the second week in a row scoring 142 points for the sectional title. Homewood-Flossmoor scored 118 points to finish second ahead of Minooka (71.5 points) and Rich Township (59 points).

The two conference rivals should be close to each other next week in Charleston. Homewood-Flossmoor qualified 13 (10 individuals, 3 relays) to next week’s state meet. Lincoln-Way East advanced 12 (9 individuals, 3 relays. All the Homewood-Flossmoor’s qualifiers came in track events.

Mariam Azeez led the Griffins winning three individual events. The junior started by jumping 19’ 0” to win the Long Jump. It was then off to the track where she ran 12.03 to win the 100 Meter Dash. Ana-Liese Torian of Homewood-Flossmoor finished second (12.20) just ahead of Rich Township’s Arianna Walker (12.22) and HF’s Alexandria Edison (12.45). All four runners qualified for the sate meet. Azeez came back to run a state leading 24.67 to win the 200 Meter Dash. It was the same order and qualifiers in the event with Torian (24.81), Walker (24.96), and Edison (25.01) finishing behind Azeez.

It was also a busy day for Edison and Torian as they also qualified in three individual events. Torian, just a sophomore and in her first year of high school track, destroyed a great field in winning the 100 Meter Hurdles with a state best time of 13.90. Edison ran a personal best of 57.29 to win the 400 Meter Dash ahead of teammate Angela Alozie (58.02). Edison, Torian, and Alozie along with Imani Warner ran 47.69 to win the 4x100m Relay ahead of state qualifiers Lincoln-Way East (48.28) and Rich Township (48.73).

Rich Township ran 1:43.37 to win the 4x200m Relay with Homewood-Flossmoor (1:45.99) the only other team qualifying. Homewood-Flossmoor won the 4x400m Relay (4:03.58) ahead of Lincoln-Way East (4:06.14). It was a great 4x800m Relay with host Minooka taking the win (9:28.00) ahead of Lincoln-Way East (9:33.76).

Caroline Schoen of Homewood-Flossmoor has been having a breakout sophomore season this spring. She will continue to EIU in winning two distance events. Schoen ran 11:05.11 to win the 3200 Meter Run ahead of Minooka’s Jocelyn Host (11:27.78). Schoen came back to run a personal best of 5:06.01 to win the 1600 Meter Run as Kate Guderjan of Lincoln-Way East finished second (5:11.51). Daija Brown of Homewood-Flossmoor surprised some by running a four second improvement on her personal best in 2:19.77 to win the 800 Meter Run ahead of Minooka’s Cassie Fuhrman (2:23.41).

One of the most unusual stories of all the sectionals this week took place in the final section of the 300 Meter Hurdles. On the third to last hurdle, Kate Sciarini of Lincoln-Way East was interfered with when a hurdle in the next lane was knocked over a runner and knocked over Sciarini. The senior got back up and charged towards the finish line just catching the then second-place runner Emerson Collins. A review of the photo showed that Collins ended up second and Sciarini third. Sophia Barnard of Lincoln-Way East ended up winning that section (45.72). Sciarini would not qualify as an at-large on time.

Lincoln-Way East filed a protest that was accepted. She would be allowed to run the race but when? Sciarini was also scheduled to compete on her team’s 4x400m Relay. The senior was cut up from the fall, exhausted both emotionally and physically from the incident. She was one of the top hurdlers in the state. Now she would not be running.

The Meet officials decided to let here-run the race again after the final section of the 1600 Meter Run. She would get a little recovery before the relay. The PA announcer asked for the fans at Minooka’s support as this sole athlete took to her blocks.

Sciarini gave it everything she had. She crossed the line and ran the exact same time as her teammate Barnard of 45.72. We will see both athletes at state next Saturday. It was perseverance from Sciarini at its finest.

Christine Nosike of Thornwood continued her school’s tradition in the weight events winning both the Shot Put and Discus. Nosike had a mark of 40’ 3.5” to win the Shot Put ahead of Jamie Sierocki of Lincoln-Way East (38’ 1.75”). Nosike threw 138’ 11” to win the Discus with Marla Hayes of Lincoln-Way Central finishing second (135’ 0”). Alyssa Coleman of Rich Township cleared a personal best of 5’ 1” to win the High Jump. Ali Van Dyke of Lincoln-Way East and Ava Bezaire of Minooka both cleared 10’ 11.5” in the Pole Vault with Van Dyke winning on fewer misses. Lincoln-Way East’s Kailey Bell also qualified (10’ 2.75”).

Bria Armstrong of Bloom Township jumped 38’ 9.75” to win the Triple Jump. Armstrong also qualified for the state meet finishing second in the 100 Meter Hurdles.
